This work presents the structure and impact properties of phenolphthalein poly(ether sulfone) blended with ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (PES-C/UHMWPE) at different compositions. The addition of UHMWPE can considerably improve the Charpy and Izod impact strength of the blends. The fracture surface is examined to demonstrate the toughening mechanics related to the modified PES-C resin. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Mechanical and structural properties of blends of phenolphthalein poly(ether sulfone) (PBS-C) with ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) were investigated using tensile and bending testing, scanning electron microscopy and transition electron microscopy. The incorporation of minor amounts of UHMWPE (2 wt.-%) into PES-C has a reinforcement effect. With higher concentrations of UHMWPE, the mechanical properties decrease gradually. Structural studies demonstrated that the blends are multiphasic in the whole composition range. The minor UHMWPE, dispersed uniformly and oriented along the flow direction, as well as the strong interfacial adhesion contribute to the increase of the mechanical performance of the blends. The domain size of the UHMWPE phase was found to increase with the increase of its concentration.

Ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) has been irradiated (0-40 Mrad) with a Co-60 source at room temperature under vacuum. The crystallinity has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The mechanical properties have been determined at room temperature. A significant increase of heat of fusion can be seen at low irradiation doses, which is attributed to crystallization, caused by chain scission during the process of irradiation. It is also observed that the thickness of the lamellae changes with irradiation dose. The Young's modulus has been improved significantly after irradiation at low doses. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is used for wear applications in total hip prostheses and total knee prostheses. Sterilisation of these prostheses is commonly by gamma-irradiation. This process creates reactive free radicals in the UHMWPE, greatly increasing its susceptibility to oxidative degradation. This study has investigated the influence of air and vacuum packaging on the properties of gamma-irradiated UHMWPE (GUR1050) following 3 years of shelf ageing. The findings indicate that vacuum packaging minimises oxidative degradation reactions that occur for UHMWPE during shelf ageing. However, gamma-irradiation of vacuum-packaged UHMWPE promotes a degree of cross-linking. It is proposed that this may enhance the wear performance of UHMWPE. Accelerated ageing studies indicate that 3 years of shelf ageing would also seem to reduce the susceptibility of gamma-irradiated UHMWPE to oxidative degradation upon removal from its vacuum packaging.

The operational lifetime of hip replacement prostheses can be severely limited due to the occurrence of excessive wear at the load-bearing interfaces. The aim of this study was to investigate how the surface topography of articulating counterfaces evolves over the duration of a laboratory wear run. It was observed that modular stainless steel femoral heads wearing against ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) can themselves be subject to wearing. A comparison with retrieved in vivo-aged femoral heads shows many topographical similarities: in a qualitative sense, scratching and pitting are evident on laboratory and in vivo-worn femoral heads; quantitatively, roughness comparisons between the new and worn devices are seen to increase typically by a factor of 4 after laboratory wearing. The observations suggest that a particular wear mode, namely third-body wear, is responsible for the increased roughness. It is conjectured that third bodies might arise through surface fatigue wear on the metal counterface, Wear debris is also observed to have been generated from the polymer surface, creating rounded debris with sizes predominantly in the range 0.4-0.8 microns: dimensions that are comparable to values previously reported for in vivo generated debris.

This thesis was aimed at investigating the physical-chemical properties and the behaviour in physiological environment of two classes of bioceramics: calcium silicate-based dental cements and alumina-based femoral heads for hip joint prostheses. The material characterization was performed using spectroscopic techniques such as that allow to obtain information on the molecular structure of the species and phases present in the analyzed samples. Raman, infrared and fluorescence spectroscopy was principally used. Calcium silicate cements, such as MTA (Mineral Trioxide Aggregate), are hydraulic materials that can set in presence of water: this characteristic makes them suitable for oral surgery and in particular as root-end filling materials. With the aim to improve the properties of commercial MTA cements, several MTA-based experimental formulations have been tested with regard to bioactivity (i.e. apatite forming ability) upon ageing in simulated body fluids. The formation of a bone-like apatite layer may support the integration in bone tissue and represents an essential requirement for osteoconduction and osteoinduction. The spectroscopic studies demonstrated that the experimental materials under study had a good bioactivity and were able to remineralize demineralized dentin. . Bioceramics thanks to their excellent mechanical properties and chemical resistance, are widely used as alternative to polymer (UHMWPE) and metal alloys (Cr-Co) for hip-joint prostesis. In order to investigate the in vivo wear mechanisms of three different generations of commercial bioceramics femoral heads (Biolox®, Biolox® forte, and Biolox® delta), fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy were used to investigate the surface properties and residual stresses of retrieved implants. Spectroscopic results suggested different wear mechanisms in the three sets of retrievals. Since Biolox® delta is a relatively recent material, the Raman results on its retrievals has been reported for the first time allowing to validate the in vitro ageing protocols proposed in the literature to simulate the effects of the in vivo wear.
