L'evolució dels models de turisme litoral: el Regne Unit, la Costa brava i Cuba

La tesi es centra en una anàlisi prèvia de les implicacions de la teoria del cicle de vida aplicada a les destinacions turístiques pel geògraf canadenc Richard W. Butler (1982) i en un estudi del significat de l'aparició del postmodernisme i les seves repercussions en el turisme, a la vegada que es resegueix la història que ha fet possible l'aparició del turisme massificat de sol i platja. Tot això és la base teòrica imprescindible per poder estudiar empíricament les destinacions de Saltburn (Regne Unit), l'Estartit (Costa Brava) i Cayo Coco (Cuba), utilitzant el cicle de vida per escriure la seva història i veure les polítiques de desenvolupament i regeneració turística que s'han seguit i si aquestes es poden qualificar de postfordistes. La principal conclusió és que el concepte del cicle de vida es limita a ser una eina de diagnòstic a posteriori. El cicle de vida, com a instrument prescriptiu, no serveix. Es específic per a cada destinació, amb unes etapes i punts d'inflexió que només es poden establir en restrospectiva. El cicle de vida és una eina descriptiva molt útil per entendre l'evolució de les destinacions turístiques i els seus mercats, però vigilant de no caure en falses exploracions o perillosos determinismes.

W-dalaprojektet - Vinnande partnerskap mellan näringsliv och högskola

Samverkan mellan företag, stat, kommuner, landsting o.s.v. och högskolor representerar tillsammans den plattform vilken ofta benämns som Triple Helix. Denna typ av samverkan utgår från antagandet att de inblandade aktörerna kan få belöningar som överstiger de bidrag som de själva sätter in. En sådan samverkan antas också ge företag och den region de befinner sig i konkurrensfördelar och möjligheter att växa och utvecklas. Syftet med Wdalaprojektet, som startade våren 2005 och som skulle avslutas i och med utgången av 2006, var att bygga upp en sådan varaktig samverkan. Den frågan som är i fokus är hur framgångsrikt W-dalaprojektet varit i dessa avseenden? Den här studien försöker:a) beskriva hur projektet initierats och implementeratsb) värdera i vilken utsträckning projektets mål har uppnåtts samtc) identifiera och värdera funktionaliteten hos den samverkansmodellsom använtsErfarenheterna från projektet kan sammanfattas i sex punkter för vad som kan antas vara väsentligt för en långsiktig samverkan att fungera.1. Det behövs fora för kontinuerliga möten och en formaliserad organisation2. ”Kontaktpunkter” för att koordinera samarbetet spelar en viktig roll3. Type I IFN induction in response to Listeria monocytogenes in human macrophages: evidence for a differential activation of IFN regulatory factor 3 (IRF3)

Listeria monocytogenes is a prototypic bacterium for studying innate and adaptive cellular immunity as well as host defense. Using human monocyte-derived macrophages, we report that an infection with a wild-type strain, but not a listeriolysin O-deficient strain, of the Gram-positive bacterium L. monocytogenes induces expression of IFN-beta and a bioactive type I IFN response. Investigating the activation of signaling pathways in human macrophages after infection revealed that a wild-type strain and a hemolysin-deficient strain of L. monocytogenes activated the NF-kappaB pathway and induced a comparable TNF response. p38 MAPK and activating transcription factor 2 were phosphorylated following infection with either strain, and IFN-beta gene expression induced by wild-type L. monocytogenes was reduced when p38 was inhibited. However, neither IFN regulatory factor (IRF) 3 translocation to the nucleus nor posttranslational modifications and dimerizations were observed after L. monocytogenes infection. In contrast, vesicular stomatitis virus and LPS triggered IRF3 activation and signaling. When IRF3 was knocked down using small interfering RNA, a L. monocytogenes-induced IFN-beta response remained unaffected whereas a vesicular stomatitis virus-triggered response was reduced. Evidence against the possibility that IRF7 acts in place of IRF3 is provided. Thus, we show that wild-type L. monocytogenes induced an IFN-beta response in human macrophages and propose that this response involves p38 MAPK and activating transcription factor 2. Using various stimuli, we show that IRF3 is differentially activated during type I IFN responses in human macrophages.

Angiotensin I-converting enzyme-gene-polymorphism: relationship to albumin excretion and blood pressure in pediatric patients with type-I-diabetes mellitus

The purpose of this study was the evaluation of a predictive genetic marker for nephropathy and hypertension in patients with type-I-diabetes mellitus (IDDM). The study was performed on 247 pediatric patients with IDDM. The mean age was 15.5 years (range 3.1-29.3), the mean duration of diabetes was 7.6 years (range 0.1-25.7). Age-related blood pressure and nocturnal albumin excretion rate were compared with the insertion/deletion-(I/D) polymorphism of the angiotensin-I converting enzyme gene. The genotype distribution did not differ significantly between IDDM patients (ID 48%, D 28%, I 24%) and the control group (ID 44%, D 37%, I 19%). Neither in the entire group, nor in patients with IDDM for more than 5 years, was a correlation found bet-ween allele distribution and albumin excretion rate. No correlation was found between genotype and blood pressure. When patients with a chronological age above 12 years were analysed separately, the genotype distribution between the groups with normal and elevated blood pressure showed no significant difference. The previously reported association of the I/D-polymorphism with nephropathy could not be confirmed in this study. The development of microalbuminuria, nephropathy and hypertension will be followed in our pediatric patients.
