Archaeological excavations alongside the river Wandle in Wallington produced evidence of the environmental history and human exploitation of the area. The recovery of a large assemblage of struck flint provided information on the nature of the prehistoric activities represented, while a detailed environmental archaeological programme permitted an examination of both the local sediment successions and thus an opportunity to reconstruct the environmental history of the site. The site revealed a complex sedimentary sequence deposited in riverine conditions, commencing during the early Holocene (from c 10,000 years before present) and continuing through the late Holocene (c last 3000 years). Large flint nodules were washed by the river onto the site where they were procured and worked by Mesolithic and Bronze Age communities. Potentially usable nodules had been tested, and suitable pieces completely reduced, while the majority of useful flakes and blades had been removed for use elsewhere. Small numbers of retouched pieces, such as scrapers and piercers, indicate that domestic activities took place nearby. By the Saxon period the site had begun to stabilise, although it remained marshy and probably peripheral to habitation. Two pits from this period were excavated, one of which contained an antler pick. A small quantity of cereal grain also suggests that cultivated land lay in the vicinity of the site. During the 19th century a mill race was dug across the site, redirecting water from the river Wandle, which resulted in episodic flooding.

We investigated the seasonal patterns of Amazonian forest photosynthetic activity, and the effects thereon of variations in climate and land-use, by integrating data from a network of ground-based eddy flux towers in Brazil established as part of the ‘Large-Scale Biosphere Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia’ project. We found that degree of water limitation, as indicated by the seasonality of the ratio of sensible to latent heat flux (Bowen ratio) predicts seasonal patterns of photosynthesis. In equatorial Amazonian forests (5◦ N–5◦ S), water limitation is absent, and photosynthetic fluxes (or gross ecosystem productivity, GEP) exhibit high or increasing levels of photosynthetic activity as the dry season progresses, likely a consequence of allocation to growth of new leaves. In contrast, forests along the southern flank of the Amazon, pastures converted from forest, and mixed forest-grass savanna, exhibit dry-season declines in GEP, consistent with increasing degrees of water limitation. Although previous work showed tropical ecosystem evapotranspiration (ET) is driven by incoming radiation, GEP observations reported here surprisingly show no or negative relationships with photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Instead, GEP fluxes largely followed the phenology of canopy photosynthetic capacity (Pc), with only deviations from this primary pattern driven by variations in PAR. Central Hill is in the northern part of the Escanaba Trough, which is a sediment-filled rift of southern Gorda Ridge. Central Hill is oriented north-south and is associated with extensive sulfide deposits. Hydrothermal alteration of sediment from Site 1038 was studied through analyses of mineralogy and the chemistry and oxygen isotopic compositions of one nearly pure clay sample. In addition, Site 1037 was drilled to establish the character of the unaltered sedimentary sequence away from the hydrothermal centers of the Northern Escanaba Trough Study Area (NESCA). Mineralogy of the clay-size fraction of turbiditic and hemipelagic sediments of Hole 1037B are predominantly quartz, feldspar, pyroxene, illite, chlorite, and smectite, representing continental-derived material. Cores from Hole 1038I, located within the area of Central Hill but away from known active vent areas, recovered minor amounts of chlorite/smectite mixed-layer clay in the fine fraction, indicating a low-temperature hydrothermal alteration. The 137.4-m-thick sediment section of Hole 1038G is located in an area of low-temperature venting. The uppermost sample is classified as chlorite/smectite mixed layer, which is underlain by chlorite as the dominant mineral. The lowermost deposits of Hole 1038G are also characterized by chlorite/smectite mixed-layer clay. In comparison to Hole 1038I, the mineralogic sequence of Hole 1038G reflects increased chloritization. Intensely altered sediment is almost completely replaced by hydrothermal chlorite in subsurface sediments of Hole 1038H. Alteration to chlorite is characterized by depletion in Na, K, Ti, Ca, Sr, Cs, and Tl and enrichment in Ba. Further, Eu depletion reflects a high-temperature plagioclase alteration. A chlorite 18O value of 2.6 indicates formation at a temperature of ~190°C. It is concluded that the authigenic chlorite in Hole 1038H formed by an active high-temperature fluid flow in the shallow subsurface.

The microfabric of 11 mudrock specimens from ODP Site 808 (Nankai accretionary prism) was quantitatively analyzed using X-ray texture goniometry and optical petrography. The objectives of the study were to learn about rock strain and to detect a component of bulk lateral shortening in the deformation of the mudstones. Strain evaluation is based on the predictions of March theory, and on distortions of initially homogeneous marker particle distributions (the Fry technique). The main results are as follows. The specimens underwent a strain path of progressive flattening, which is closely related to loss of pore space by vertical loading. A component of bulk lateral shortening is detectable in the top 550 mbsf at Site 808, but compared with the amount of uniaxial vertical shortening, its relative magnitude is probably small. Moreover, it cannot be said with confidence whether this is caused by toe contraction of the accretionary wedge or by gravitationally induced downslope movement of the sediment pile. The mudstones examined were deposited in a marine environment with an oxic bottom water column. Micropore collapse is an important fabric building mechanism, but below 400 mbsf its effects are at least partly overridden by recrystallization of smectite. We conclude that mud microfabrics are not very precise deformation gauges, but can be used for rough estimations of strain.

Mineralogical and major-element compositions of 72 samples of volcanic ash, recovered from Site 808 at Nankai Trough during Leg 131, were analyzed in relation to the early diagenetic alteration. Alteration products are first observed at the following depths: smectite, 200 mbsf; clinoptilolite, 646 mbsf; and analcite, 810 mbsf. Glass decomposition dominates over authigenic mineral formation between 200 and 550 mbsf in the sediment column, whereas mineral formation becomes dominant below 550 mbsf. Based on the X-ray diffraction patterns, a broad and asymmetric peak of 15A suggests a presence of illite/smectite (I/S) mixed-layered minerals in a sample from 646 mbsf. I/S mixed-layered mineral formation, however, rarely occurs even at the bottom of the sediment column (1290 mbsf) at 120° C. This is possibly because zeolite (especially clinoptilolite) formed in the ash interferes with illite formation in the smectite. The formation of alteration minerals affects the major-element chemistry of the ash and the interstitial waters. H4SiO4 concentrations in interstitial waters increase during glass decomposition and decrease with smectite and clinoptilolite formation. K is removed from interstitial water into smectite and/or clinoptilolite. Mg is fixed into smectite (and/or chlorite).

Drill core recovered at Ocean Drilling Program Site 808 (Leg 131) proves that the wedge of trench sediment within the central region of the Nankai Trough comprises approximately 600 m of hemipelagic mud, sandy turbidites, and silty turbidites. The stratigraphic succession thickens and coarsens upward, with hemipelagic muds and volcanic-ash layers of the Shikoku Basin overlain by silty and sandy trench-wedge deposits. Past investigations of clay mineralogy and sand petrography within this region have led to the hypothesis that most of the detritus in the Nankai Trough was derived from the Izu-Honshu collision zone and transported southwestward via axial turbidity currents. Shipboard analyses of paleocurrent indicators, on the other hand, show that most of the ripple cross-laminae within silty turbidites of the outer marginal trench-wedge facies are inclined to the north and northwest; thus, many of the turbidity currents reflected off the seaward slope of the trench rather than moving straight down the trench axis. Shore-based analyses of detrital clay minerals demonstrate that the hemipelagic muds and matrix materials within sandy and silty turbidites are all enriched in illite; chlorite is the second-most abundant clay mineral, followed by smectite. In general, the relative mineral percentages change relatively little as a function of depth, and the hemipelagic clay-mineral population is virtually identical to the turbidite-matrix population. Comparisons between different size fractions (<2 µm and 2-6 µm) show modest amounts of mineral partitioning, with chlorite content increasing in the coarser fraction and smectite increasing in the finer fraction. Values of illite crystallinity index are consistent with conditions of advanced anchimetamorphism and epimetamorphism within the source region. Of the three mica polytypes detected, the 2M1 variety dominates over the 1M and 1Md polytypes; these data are consistent with values of illite crystallinity. Measurements of mica bo lattice spacing show that the detrital illite particles were eroded from a zone of intermediate-pressure metamorphism. Collectively, these data provide an excellent match with the lithologic and metamorphic character of the Izu-Honshu collision zone. Data from Leg 131, therefore, confirm the earlier interpretations of detrital provenance. The regional pattern of sediment dispersal is dominated by a combination of southwest-directed axial turbidity currents, radial expansion of the axial flows, oblique movement of suspended clouds onto and beyond the seaward slope of the Nankai Trough, and flow reflection back toward the trench axis.
