This paper presents a method for the design of reduced-order observers for a class of linear time-delay systems of the neutral-type. Conditions for the existence of reduced-order observers that are capable of asymptotically estimating any given function of the state vector are derived. A step-by-step design procedure is given for the determination of the observer parameters. A numerical example is given to illustrate the design procedure.

This paper addresses the problem of asymptotic stability of a linear system with many delay units. A novel algebraic test is proposed for the delay-independent stability of the system, based on the root distribution of the system's characteristic equation. If the system is only stable dependent of delay, the whole stable regions of the system can be perfectly obtained. Two algorithms are derived to examine the delay-independent stability, and to compute the whole stable regions if the system is of delay-dependent stability. These algorithms are computationally efficient and applicable to both certain and uncertain systems. Some illustrative examples demonstrate the validity of the approach.

This note provides a comprehensive treatment on the design of functional observers for linear systems having a time-varying delay in the state variables. The designed observers possess attractive features of being low-order and delay-free and hence they are cost effective and easy to implement. Existence conditions are derived and a design procedure for finding low-order observers is given.

This article considers the problem of estimating a partial set of the state vector and/or unknown input vector of linear systems driven by unknown inputs and time-varying delay in the state variables. Three types of reduced-order observers, namely, observers with delays, observers without internal delays and delay-free observers are proposed in this article. Existence conditions and design procedures are presented for the determination of parameters for each case of observers. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the design procedures.

This paper investigates the theoretical requirements for unique localization of multiple emitters using time delay of arrival(TDoA) subjected to the data-association problem. Specifically, an examination is carried out to find the necessary fundamental requirements to solve the so-called ghost node problem pertaining to sensor arrays.

This paper considers the problem of designing an observer-based output feedback controller to exponentially stabilize a class of linear systems with an interval time-varying delay in the state vector. The delay is assumed to vary within an interval with known lower and upper bounds. The time-varying delay is not required to be differentiable, nor should its lower bound be zero. By constructing a set of Lyapunov–Krasovskii functionals and utilizing the Newton–Leibniz formula, a delay-dependent stabilizability condition which is expressed in terms of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) is derived to ensure the closed-loop system is exponentially stable with a prescribed α-convergence rate. The design of an observerbased output feedback controller can be carried out in a systematic and computationally efficient manner via the use of an LMI-based algorithm. A numerical example is given to illustrate the design procedure.

This paper considers the design of reduced-order distributed functional observers for interconnected linear systems with the presence of time delays in the interconnections. Unlike observers which consider only the ideal non-delayed output information transfer, the proposed observer is capable of dealing with delayed output information from geographically separated subsystems. It is shown that by accepting measurement data from other subsystems, the conditions under which an observer exists can be made less conservative. Existence conditions, systematic and a straightforward procedure for the synthesis of the observers are given along with numerical examples illustrating the effectiveness and simplicity of the design algorithm.

A new problem on ε-bounded functional state estimation for time-delay systems with unknown bounded disturbances is studied in this paper. In the presence of unknown bounded disturbances, the common assumption regarding the observers matching condition is no longer required. In this regard, instead of achieving asymptotic convergence for the observer error, the error is now required to converge exponentially within a ball with a small radius ε > 0. This means that the estimate converges exponentially within an ε-bound of the true value. A general observer that utilises multiple-delayed output and input information is proposed. Sufficient conditions for the existence of the proposed observer are first given. We then employ an extended Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional which combines the delay-decomposition technique with a triple-integral term to study the ε-convergence problem of the observer error system. Moreover, the obtained results are shown to be more effective than the existing results for the cases with no disturbances and/or no time delay. Three numerical examples are given to illustrate the obtained results.

A new methodology is reported for designing functional observers to detect actuator faults of a class of time-delay systems where the matrix pair (A, C) is not observable. First, a generalised state transformation is used to transform the system into new coordinates where the delay term associated with the state vector is injected into the system's output and input. Then, a minimum-order functional observer is designed to construct a residual function that can trigger system faults. The finding is significant as it is now possible to detect faults of time-delay systems where the pair (A, C) is not required to be observable. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design approach. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2014.

In this paper, a general class of Halanay-type non-autonomous functional differential inequalities is considered. A new concept of stability, namely global generalized exponential stability, is proposed. We first prove some new generalizations of the Halanay inequality. We then derive explicit criteria for global generalized exponential stability of nonlinear non-autonomous time-delay systems based on our new generalized Halanay inequalities. Numerical examples and simulations are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the obtained results.

This paper considers time-delay systems with bounded disturbances. We study a new problem of finding an upper bound of an absolute value function of any given linear functional of the state vector starting from the origin of the system. Based on the Lyapunov-Krasovskii method combining with the recent Wirtinger-based integral inequality that has just been proposed by Seuret & Gouaisbaut (2013. Wirtinger-based integral inequality: application to time-delay systems. Automatica, 49, 2860-2866), sufficient conditions for the existence of an upper bound of the function are derived. The obtained results are shown to be more effective than those adapted from the existing works on reachable set bounding. Furthermore, the obtained results are applied to refine existing ellipsoidal bounds of the reachable sets. The effectiveness of the obtained results is illustrated by two numerical examples.

Linear systems with interval time-varying delay and unknown-but-bounded disturbances are considered in this paper. We study the problem of finding outer bound of forwards reachable sets and inter bound of backwards reachable sets of the system. Firstly, two definitions on forwards and backwards reachable sets, where initial state vectors are not necessary to be equal to zero, are introduced. Then, by using the Lyapunov-Krasovskii method, two sufficient conditions for the existence of: (i) the smallest possible outer bound of forwards reachable sets; and (ii) the largest possible inter bound of backwards reachable sets, are derived. These conditions are presented in terms of linear matrix inequalities with two parameters need to tuned, which therefore can be efficiently solved by combining existing convex optimization algorithms with a two-dimensional search method to obtain optimal bounds. Lastly, the obtained results are illustrated by four numerical examples.
