Metals that present bcc crystalline structure, when receiving addition of interstitial atoms as oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and carbon, undergo significant changes in their physical properties, being able to dissolve great amounts of those interstitial elements, thus forming solid solutions. Niobium and most of its alloys possess bcc crystalline structure and, as Brazil is the largest world exporter of this metal, it is fundamental to understand the interaction mechanisms between interstitial elements and niobium or its alloys. In this paper, mechanical spectroscopy (internal friction) measurements were performed in Nb-2.0wt%Ti alloys containing nitrogen in solid solution. The experimental results presented complex internal friction spectra and with the addition of substitutional solute, it was observed interactions between the two types of solutes (substitutional and interstitial), considering that the random distribution of the interstitial atoms was affected by the presence of substitutional atoms. Interstitial diffusion coefficients, pre-exponential factors and activation energies were calculated for nitrogen in the Nb-2.0wt%Ti alloys.

Ti-6Al-4V alloy is one of the most frequently used Ti alloys with diverse applications in aerospace and biomedical areas due to its favorable mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Meanwhile, its surface can stiffer intense corrosion caused by wear processes due to its poor tribological properties. Thus in the present study, PIII processing of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was carried out to evaluate its corrosion resistance in 3.5% NaCl solution. Two different sets of Ti-6Al-4V samples were PIII treated, varying the plasma gases and the treatment time. The corrosion behavior is correlated with the surface morphology, and the nitrogen content. SEM micrographs of the untreated sample reveal a typical two-phase structure. PIII processing promotes surface sputtering and the surface morphology is completely different for samples treated with N-2/H-2 mixture and N-2 only. The highest penetration of nitrogen (similar to 88 nm), corresponding to 33% of N-2 was obtained for the sample treated with N-2/H-2 mixture for 1:30 h. The corrosion behavior of the samples was investigated by a potentiodynamic polarization method. A large passive region of the polarization curves (similar to 1.5 V), associated with the formation of a protective film, was observed for all samples. The passive current density (similar to 3 x 10(-6) A cm(-2)) of the PIII-treated Ti-6Al-4V samples is about 10 times higher than for the untreated sample. This current value is still rather low and maintains good corrosion resistance. The anodic branches of the polarization curves for all treated Ti-6Al-4V samples demonstrate also that the oxide films break down at approximately 1.6 V, forming an active region. Although the sample treated by N-2/H-2 mixture for 1.30 It has thicker nitrogen enriched layer, better corrosion resistance is obtained for the PIII process performed with N, gas only. The development of new shape memory alloys with high martensitic transformation temperature increases the potential for applications. The development and use of these new alloys depends on the stability of the structure during cycling at high temperatures. If it is possible to guarantee that on alloys keeps the structure during cycling, then the alloy can be used because of the shape memory properties. The aim of this work is to obtain a kinetic model of the forward and backward martensitic transformation of two Cu-Al-Ni-Mn-Ti alloys. Differential scanning calorimetry has been performed in order to establish the kinetic stability of the martensite and the beta transformation. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nitrogen implantation into Ti alloys at higher temperatures improves their mechanical and corrosion resistance properties by forming a thicker nitride layer. In this paper, two different sets of Ti-6Al-4V samples were plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII)-treated using nitrogen plasma, varying the treatment time from 30 to 150 min (800 degrees C) and the process temperature from 400 degrees C to 800 degrees C (t = 60 min). Nanoindentation measurements of the PIII-treated samples at 800 C during 150 min showed the highest hardness value, 24 GPa, which is about four times bigger than untreated sample hardness. The N penetration at these conditions reached approximately 150 nm as analyzed by Auger spectroscopy. on the other hand, the lowest passive current density (3 x 10(-7) A. cm(-2)) was obtained for a PIII-treated sample during 30 min at higher temperature (800 degrees C). The corrosion resistance of this sample is almost the same as for the untreated specimen. Corrosion behavior evidenced that in strong oxidizing media, all PIII-treated samples are more corrosion resistant than the untreated one. PIII processing at higher temperatures promotes smoothing of the sample surface as observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction analyses of the untreated samples identified the two typical Ti phases, Ti alpha and Ti beta. After the implantation, Ti2N and TiO2 phases were also detected.

Recent studies have been done to achieve biomedical alloys containing non-toxic elements and presenting low elastic moduli. It has been reported that Ti-Nb-Zr alloys rich in beta phase, especially Ti-13Nb-13Zr, have potential characteristics for substituting conventional materials such as Ti-6Al-4V, stainless steel and Co alloys. The aim of this work is to study the internal friction (IF) of Ti-13Nb-13Zr (TNZ) alloy due to the importance of the absorption impacts in orthopedic applications. The internal friction of this alloy produced by arc melting was measured using an inverted torsion pendulum with the free decay method. The measurements were performed from 77 to 700 K with heating rate of 1 K/min, in a vacuum better than 10-5 mBar. The results show a relaxation structure at high temperature strongly dependent on microstructure of the material. Qualitative discussions are presented for the experimental results, and the possibility of using the TNZ as a high damping material is briefly mentioned.

Titanium and its alloys are widely used as biomaterials due to their mechanical, chemical and biological properties. To enhance the biocompatibility of titanium alloys, various surface treatments have been proposed. In particular, the formation of titanium oxide nanotubes layers has been extensively examined. According to the literature, it is possible to induce the growth of TiO2 on the surface of titanium, employing the aqueous anodizing electrolyte. This Ti-7.5Mo alloy was anodized in glycerol electrolytes containg 0.25 wt% of NH4F, with variations in time, voltage and calcinations temperature. After anodization, the sample surfaces were analyzed with a field emission scanning electron microscopy, DRX and contact angle measurements. It was possible to observe the formation of TiO2 on the surface and these findings represent a simple surface treatment for Ti alloys that has high potential for biomedical applications. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the oral environment on the corrosion of dental alloys with different compositions, using electrochemical methods. The corrosion rates were obtained from the current-potential curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The effect of artificial saliva on the corrosion of dental alloys was dependent on alloy composition. Dissolution of the ions occurred in all tested dental alloys and the results were strongly dependent on the general alloy composition. Regarding the alloys containing nickel, the Ni-Cr and Ni-Cr-Ti alloys released 0.62 mg/L of Ni on average, while the Co-Cr dental alloy released ions between 0.01 and 0.03 mg/L of Co and Cr, respectively. The open-circuit potential stabilized at a higher level with lower deviation (standard deviation: Ni-Cr-6Ti = 32 mV/SCE and Co-Cr = 54 mV/SCE). The potenciodynamic curves of the dental alloys showed that the Ni-based dental alloy with >70 wt% of Ni had a similar curve and the Co-Cr dental alloy showed a low current density and hence a high resistance to corrosion compared with the Ni-based dental alloys. Some changes in microstructure were observed and this fact influenced the corrosion behavior for the alloys. The lower corrosion resistance also led to greater release of nickel ions to the medium. The quantity of Co ions released from the Co-Cr-Mo alloy was relatively small in the solutions. In addition, the quantity of Cr ions released into the artificial saliva from the Co-Cr alloy was lower than Cr release from the Ni-based dental alloys.

Profiting by the increasing availability of laser sources delivering intensities above 10 9 W/cm 2 with pulse energies in the range of several Joules and pulse widths in the range of nanoseconds, laser shock processing (LSP) is being consolidating as an effective technology for the improvement of surface mechanical and corrosion resistance properties of metals and is being developed as a practical process amenable to production engineering. The main acknowledged advantage of the laser shock processing technique consists on its capability of inducing a relatively deep compression residual stresses field into metallic alloy pieces allowing an improved mechanical behaviour, explicitly, the life improvement of the treated specimens against wear, crack growth and stress corrosion cracking. Following a short description of the theoretical/computational and experimental methods developed by the authors for the predictive assessment and experimental implementation of LSP treatments, experimental results on the residual stress profiles and associated surface properties modification successfully reached in typical materials (specifically steels and Al and Ti alloys) under different LSP irradiation conditions are presented

Since the 1980s, different devices based on superelastic alloys have been developed to fulfill orthodontic applications. Particularly in the last decades several researches have been carried out to evaluate the mechanical behavior of Ni-Ti alloys, including their tensile, torsion and fatigue properties. However, studies regarding the dependence of elastic properties on residence time of Ni-Ti wires in the oral cavity are scarce. Such approach is essential since metallic alloys are submitted to mechanical stresses during orthodontic treatment as well as pH and temperature fluctuations. The goal of the present contribution is to provide elastic stress-strain results to guide the orthodontic choice between martensitic thermal activated and austenitic superelastic Ni-Ti alloys. From the point of view of an orthodontist, the selection of appropriate materials and the correct maintenance of the orthodontic apparatus are essential needs during clinical treatment. The present work evaluated the elastic behavior of Ni-Ti alloy wires with diameters varying from 0.014 to 0.020 inches, submitted to hysteresis tensile tests with 8% strain. Tensile tests were performed after periods of use of 1, 2 and 3 months in the oral cavity of patients submitted to orthodontic treatment. The results from the hysteresis tests allowed to exam the strain range covered by isostress lines upon loading and unloading, as well as the residual strain after unloading for both superelastic and thermal activated Ni-Ti wires. Superelastic Ni-Ti wires exhibited higher load isostress values compared to thermal activated wires. It was found that such differences in the load isostress values can increase with increasing residence time.

The basic framework and - conceptual understanding of the metallurgy of Ti alloys is strong and this has enabled the use of titanium and its alloys in safety-critical structures such as those in aircraft and aircraft engines. Nevertheless, a focus on cost-effectiveness and the compression of product development time by effectively integrating design with manufacturing in these applications, as well as those emerging in bioengineering, has driven research in recent decades towards a greater predictive capability through the use of computational materials engineering tools. Therefore this paper focuses on the complexity and variety of fundamental phenomena in this material system with a focus on phase transformations and mechanical behaviour in order to delineate the challenges that lie ahead in achieving these goals.
