The active sites in different TS-1 zeolites for propylene epoxidation studied by ultraviolet resonance Raman and ultraviolet visible absorption spectroscopies

The titanium species in four kinds of titanium-containing MFI zeolites have been studied by ultraviolet (UV)-Raman and ultraviolet visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopies and by the epoxidation of propylene with diluted H2O2 solution (30%). UV-Raman spectroscopy is proved to be a suitable means to estimate qualitatively the framework titanium in TS-l zeolites. Based on the comparison of the relative intensity ratio I-1125/I-380 of UV-Raman spectra, the TS-1(conv.) sample synthesized hydrothermally by the conventional procedure shows the highest amount of framework titanium. UV-Vis spectroscopy reveals that besides minor anatase. titanium species are mainly tetrahydrally coordinated into the framework for TS-l(conv.) or the Ti-ZSM-5 sample prepared by gas-solid reaction between deboronated B-ZSM-5 and TiCl4 vapor at elevated temperatures. For the TS-1(org.) and TS-1(inorg.) samples synthesized hydrothermally using tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPABr) as template and tetrabutylorthotitanite (TBOT) and TiCl3 as titanium source, respectively, the presence of mononuclear and isolated TiOx species which are proposed to bond to the zeolite extraframework is observed. In addition to the framework titanium species, these isolated TiOx species are assumed to be also active for propylene epoxidation.

Titanium species in titanium silicalite TS-1 prepared by hydrothermal method

The titanium species existing in titanium silicalite TS-1, which is prepared by hydrothermal method, were investigated using chemical analysis, XRD, FT-IR, Si-29 MAS NMR, UV-VIS, ESR. It has been observed that several kinds of titanium species may exist in titanium silicalite. The form that titanium atoms incorporate into the framework of titanium silicalite synthesized using tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPABr) as template differs from that using the classical method. But, the symmetry of titanium silicalite, changes from monoclinic to orthorhombic with the increase of titanium content in both methods. The Ti-O-2(-) originated from framework titanium and H2O2 has the moderate stability and may be active site in oxidation reaction. TS-1 synthesized using TPABr as template does not contain anatase, but contains a kind of partly condensed titanium species with six-fold coordination. The titanium species may correspond to 270-280 mn band in UV-VIS spectra and also can form Ti-O-2(-). But, this kind of Ti-O-2(-) is very stable and cannot be catalytic active site. So, the six-fold coordination titanium species may be inactive in both the oxidation reaction and the decomposition of H2O2. The hypothesis has been further proved by the phenomena that the titanium species is easily washed off using acid, and acid treating will not influence the catalytic performance of TS-1. Identifying framework titanium in TS-1 zeolite by UV resonance Raman spectroscopy

Framework titanium in Ti-silicalite-1 (TS-1) zeolite was selectively identified by its resonance Raman bands using ultraviolet (W) Raman spectroscopy. Raman spectra of the TS-1 and silicalite-1 zeolites were obtained and compared using continuous wave laser lines at 244, 325, and 488 nm as the excitation sources. It was only with the excitation at 244 nm that resonance enhanced Raman bands at 490, 530, and 1125 cm(-1) appeared exclusively for the TS-1 zeolite. Furthermore, these bands increased in intensity with the crystallization time of the TS-1 zeolite. The Raman bands at 490, 530, and 1125 cm(-1) are identified as the framework titanium species because they only appeared when the laser excites the charge-transfer transition of the framework titanium species in the TS-1. No resonance Raman enhancement was detected for the bands of silicalite-1 zeolite and for the band at 960 cm(-1) of TS-1 with any of the excitation sources ranging from the visible tb UV regions. This approach can be applicable for the identification of other transition metal ions substituted in the framework of a zeolite or any other molecular sieve.

Arp2p, a potential substrate for NatB acetyltransferase in fission yeast, is important in actin patch nucleation and motility in arp2-1 and arm1 ts mutants

The actin cytoskeleton is a dynamic and complex structure in fission yeast that plays a major function in many cell processes including cellular growth, septa formation, endocytosis and cellular division. Computational studies have shown that Arp2p, which forms part of the Arp2/3 complex, is a potential substrate of NatB acetyltransferase which has specificity for proteins possessing an N-terminal Met-Asp or Met-Glu sequence motif. In arm1- mutants the loss of function of Arm1p, an auxillary subunit required for NatB activity, results in a temperature sensitive phenotype characterized by multiple septa, failure of endocytosis, and the inability to form actin cables. A temperature sensitive mutant of Schizosaccharomyces pombe arp2 gene exhibits a similar phenotype as seen by the formation of improper septa, slow growth, and the delocalization of actin patches. Four expression vectors encoding the open reading frames of arp2 and cdc8 (tropomyosin) were constructed with a modification changing the second residue to a Histidine, believed to mimic the charge distribution of natural acetylation by NatB. Constructs tested in normal yeast strains remained viable and grew normally in the presence of Met-His Arp2p and tropomyosin. Analysis of their ability to suppress the mutant phenotypes of arp2-1 and arm1- mutants is an area of research to be explored in future studies.

Characterization of a thymidylate synthase (TS)-inducible cell line: a model system for studying sensitivity to TS- and non-TS-targeted chemotherapies

Thymidylate synthase (TS) is responsible for the de novo synthesis of thymidylate, which is required for DNA synthesis and repair and which is an important target for fluoropyrimidines such as 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), and antifolates such as Tomudex (TDX), ZD9331, and multitargeted antifolate (MTA). To study the importance of TS expression in determining resistance to these agents, we have developed an MDA435 breast cancer-derived cell line with tetracycline-regulated expression of TS termed MTS-5. We have demonstrated that inducible expression of TS increased the IC(50) dose of the TS-targeted therapeutic agents 5-FU, TDX, and ZD9331 by 2-, 9- and 24-fold respectively. An IC(50) dose for MTA was unobtainable when TS was overexpressed in these cells, which indicated that MTA toxicity is highly sensitive to increased TS expression levels. The growth inhibitory effects of the chemotherapeutic agents CPT-11, cisplatin, oxaliplatin, and Taxol were unaffected by TS up-regulation. Cell cycle analyses revealed that IC(50) doses of 5-FU, TDX and MTA caused an S-phase arrest in cells that did not overexpress TS, and this arrest was overcome when TS was up-regulated. Furthermore, the S-phase arrest was accompanied by 2- to 4-fold increased expression of the cell cycle regulatory genes cyclin E, cyclin A, and cyclin dependent kinase 2 (cdk2). These results indicate that acute increases in TS expression levels play a key role in determining cellular sensitivity to TS-directed chemotherapeutic drugs by modulating the degree of S-phase arrest caused by these agents. Moreover, CPT-11, cisplatin, oxaliplatin, and Taxol remain highly cytotoxic in cells that overexpress TS.

Les représentations de la famille dans la série Nos étés

Ce mémoire porte sur les représentations de la famille dans la série Nos étés. La série, en tant que fiction télévisée, prend naissance dans l'objet même qu'est la fiction et, dans un sens plus large, dans le contexte de la production télévisée au Québec. Le contenu de l'émission - l'histoire de deux familles durant le XX e siècle - est inspiré de l'histoire du Québec et de ses familles. Nos étés offre un discours sur la famille, à travers ses représentations. La série, écrite et produite par Anne Boyer et Michel d'Astous, constitue un univers clos de quatre saisons, totalisant 29 épisodes. Nous avons soumis à l'analyse de contenu tous les épisodes, en prenant soin de choisir les scènes traitant de la famille. À partir de chaque scène, nous avons construit une fiche regroupant les informations pertinentes à la recherche. Nous avons finalement analysé les résultats obtenus à l'aide de ces fiches. La série Nos étés offre plusieurs représentations de la famille. Nous avons observé plus en détails les liens de filiation, de mariage et de maternité. Les représentations de la famille sont relativement semblables d'une époque à l'autre et elles rendent compte des changements survenus dans la famille au Québec. De façon générale, Nos étés traite du décalage qui aurait existé entre l'atteinte de la famille idéale et l'envie grandissante d'émancipation des femmes dans le Québec du XXe siècle.

Mediciones in situ de TS de diversas especies a finales del invierno de 1998. Crucero BIC Humboldt 9808-09

Se efectuaron mediciones de TS (Fuerza de Blanco, Target Strenght) durante los 108 lances de comprobación de ecotrazos realizados por el BIC Humboldt en el marco del Crucero 9808-09 de Evaluación Hidroacústica de Recursos Pelágicos. Se consideran para el análisis únicamente aquellos lances donde más del 90% de la captura perteneció a una sola especie. Los factores b20 de la ecuación de TS (TS=20 log L - b20) que han sido determinados, las cuales deberán ser considerados como provisionales, son las siguientes: Pez cinta (Trichiurus lepturus) = 70,95 (120 kHz); Vinciguerria o pez linterna (Vinciguerria lucetia pacifici) = 83,29 (120 kHz); Samasa (Anchoa nasus) = 86,57 (120 kHz); Caballa (Scomber japonicus) = 83,09 (120 kHz); Pez cinta (Trichiurus lepturus) = 71,41 (38 kHz); y Vinciguerria o pez linterna (Vinciguerria lucetia pacifici)= 82,04 (38kHz).

Mediciones in situ de TS para el krill (Euphasia superba) a 120 Khz. Verano austral 1998. Perú antar IX

Se realizaron mediciones de la Fuerza de Blanco (TS) del krill (Euphausia superba) durante los 29 lances efectuados en el Crucero de Evaluación Hidroacústica utilizando la ecosonda SIMRAD EK 500 a bordo del BIC Humboldt entre los días 12 y 24 de enero de 1998 a lo largo del Estrecho de Bransfield y alrededores de la Isla Elefante. Se derivaron los valores de b20 a partir de le ecuación de TS de FOOTE (1990), de las longitudes promedios de los individuos capturados durante cada uno de los lances y de las tablas de TS generadas por la ecosonda, determinándose una ecuación de TS para el krill en un rango de longitud comprendido entre 2,1 y 5,3 cm de la siguiente forma: TS = 20 log L - 89,26. Se discute el posible sesgo de la ecuación debido, entre otros aspectos a que no se consideraron los estadíos sexuales del krill.

Language shifting among the Hodenosaunee of Southern Ontario : Edwaenagé: tsgó -- Shogwaya> dihs> oh nidwawenó :de: shogwá:wi: tsáhohwejáda:t

Through aggressive legislative and educational policies Indigenous languages globally have been shifted to the language of the dominant society. Globalization has brought previously geo-politically and/or geo-linguistically isolated people and language . groups into close proximity that necessitated interaction and at times intense power struggles. There are currently approximately 6,000 spoken languages in the world, more than half are either endangered, dying or disappearing altogether. Canadian statistics reveal an overall 3 % decline in the intergenerational transmission of language. Of the original 60 Indigenous languages spoken in Canada, 8 are extinct, 13 are nearly extinct, and 23 are critical. The remaining languages have a slim chance of survival. Within the next 100 years only 4 Indigenous languages will remain. The Hodenosaunee languages of Southern Ontario are not incl~ded among the list of languages that will survive the next 100 years. There are, without a doubt, complex challenges in the maintenance of Indigenous languages within a dominant-culture influenced environment. Given the increasing awareness of the social impact of linguistic integrity and preservation of languages on Indigenous people as a whole, this study considers how language is currently being used; the social, economic, and political implications of language shifting; the need to shift our social consciousness in order to understand the urgency in privileging our Hodenosaunee languages; as well as ways in which we might achieve those goals as individuals, as families, and as a community.
