Esta Tesis trata sobre el desarrollo y crecimiento -mediante tecnología MOVPE (del inglés: MetalOrganic Vapor Phase Epitaxy)- de células solares híbridas de semiconductores III-V sobre substratos de silicio. Esta integración pretende ofrecer una alternativa a las células actuales de III-V, que, si bien ostentan el récord de eficiencia en dispositivos fotovoltaicos, su coste es, a día de hoy, demasiado elevado para ser económicamente competitivo frente a las células convencionales de silicio. De este modo, este proyecto trata de conjugar el potencial de alta eficiencia ya demostrado por los semiconductores III-V en arquitecturas de células fotovoltaicas multiunión con el bajo coste, la disponibilidad y la abundancia del silicio. La integración de semiconductores III-V sobre substratos de silicio puede afrontarse a través de diferentes aproximaciones. En esta Tesis se ha optado por el desarrollo de células solares metamórficas de doble unión de GaAsP/Si. Mediante esta técnica, la transición entre los parámetros de red de ambos materiales se consigue por medio de la formación de defectos cristalográficos (mayoritariamente dislocaciones). La idea es confinar estos defectos durante el crecimiento de sucesivas capas graduales en composición para que la superficie final tenga, por un lado, una buena calidad estructural, y por otro, un parámetro de red adecuado. Numerosos grupos de investigación han dirigido sus esfuerzos en los últimos años en desarrollar una estructura similar a la que aquí proponemos. La mayoría de éstos se han centrado en entender los retos asociados al crecimiento de materiales III-V, con el fin de conseguir un material de alta calidad cristalográfica. Sin embargo, prácticamente ninguno de estos grupos ha prestado especial atención al desarrollo y optimización de la célula inferior de silicio, cuyo papel va a ser de gran relevancia en el funcionamiento de la célula completa. De esta forma, y con el fin de completar el trabajo hecho hasta el momento en el desarrollo de células de III-V sobre silicio, la presente Tesis se centra, fundamentalmente, en el diseño y optimización de la célula inferior de silicio, para extraer su máximo potencial. Este trabajo se ha estructurado en seis capítulos, ordenados de acuerdo al desarrollo natural de la célula inferior. Tras un capítulo de introducción al crecimiento de semiconductores III-V sobre Si, en el que se describen las diferentes alternativas para su integración; nos ocupamos de la parte experimental, comenzando con una extensa descripción y caracterización de los substratos de silicio. De este modo, en el Capítulo 2 se analizan con exhaustividad los diferentes tratamientos (tanto químicos como térmicos) que deben seguir éstos para garantizar una superficie óptima sobre la que crecer epitaxialmente el resto de la estructura. Ya centrados en el diseño de la célula inferior, el Capítulo 3 aborda la formación de la unión p-n. En primer lugar se analiza qué configuración de emisor (en términos de dopaje y espesor) es la más adecuada para sacar el máximo rendimiento de la célula inferior. En este primer estudio se compara entre las diferentes alternativas existentes para la creación del emisor, evaluando las ventajas e inconvenientes que cada aproximación ofrece frente al resto. Tras ello, se presenta un modelo teórico capaz de simular el proceso de difusión de fosforo en silicio en un entorno MOVPE por medio del software Silvaco. Mediante este modelo teórico podemos determinar qué condiciones experimentales son necesarias para conseguir un emisor con el diseño seleccionado. Finalmente, estos modelos serán validados y constatados experimentalmente mediante la caracterización por técnicas analíticas (i.e. ECV o SIMS) de uniones p-n con emisores difundidos. Uno de los principales problemas asociados a la formación del emisor por difusión de fósforo, es la degradación superficial del substrato como consecuencia de su exposición a grandes concentraciones de fosfina (fuente de fósforo). En efecto, la rugosidad del silicio debe ser minuciosamente controlada, puesto que éste servirá de base para el posterior crecimiento epitaxial y por tanto debe presentar una superficie prístina para evitar una degradación morfológica y cristalográfica de las capas superiores. En este sentido, el Capítulo 4 incluye un análisis exhaustivo sobre la degradación morfológica de los substratos de silicio durante la formación del emisor. Además, se proponen diferentes alternativas para la recuperación de la superficie con el fin de conseguir rugosidades sub-nanométricas, que no comprometan la calidad del crecimiento epitaxial. Finalmente, a través de desarrollos teóricos, se establecerá una correlación entre la degradación morfológica (observada experimentalmente) con el perfil de difusión del fósforo en el silicio y por tanto, con las características del emisor. Una vez concluida la formación de la unión p-n propiamente dicha, se abordan los problemas relacionados con el crecimiento de la capa de nucleación de GaP. Por un lado, esta capa será la encargada de pasivar la subcélula de silicio, por lo que su crecimiento debe ser regular y homogéneo para que la superficie de silicio quede totalmente pasivada, de tal forma que la velocidad de recombinación superficial en la interfaz GaP/Si sea mínima. Por otro lado, su crecimiento debe ser tal que minimice la aparición de los defectos típicos de una heteroepitaxia de una capa polar sobre un substrato no polar -denominados dominios de antifase-. En el Capítulo 5 se exploran diferentes rutinas de nucleación, dentro del gran abanico de posibilidades existentes, para conseguir una capa de GaP con una buena calidad morfológica y estructural, que será analizada mediante diversas técnicas de caracterización microscópicas. La última parte de esta Tesis está dedicada al estudio de las propiedades fotovoltaicas de la célula inferior. En ella se analiza la evolución de los tiempos de vida de portadores minoritarios de la base durante dos etapas claves en el desarrollo de la estructura Ill-V/Si: la formación de la célula inferior y el crecimiento de las capas III-V. Este estudio se ha llevado a cabo en colaboración con la Universidad de Ohio, que cuentan con una gran experiencia en el crecimiento de materiales III-V sobre silicio. Esta tesis concluye destacando las conclusiones globales del trabajo realizado y proponiendo diversas líneas de trabajo a emprender en el futuro. ABSTRACT This thesis pursues the development and growth of hybrid solar cells -through Metal Organic Vapor Phase Epitaxy (MOVPE)- formed by III-V semiconductors on silicon substrates. This integration aims to provide an alternative to current III-V cells, which, despite hold the efficiency record for photovoltaic devices, their cost is, today, too high to be economically competitive to conventional silicon cells. Accordingly, the target of this project is to link the already demonstrated efficiency potential of III-V semiconductor multijunction solar cell architectures with the low cost and unconstrained availability of silicon substrates. Within the existing alternatives for the integration of III-V semiconductors on silicon substrates, this thesis is based on the metamorphic approach for the development of GaAsP/Si dual-junction solar cells. In this approach, the accommodation of the lattice mismatch is handle through the appearance of crystallographic defects (namely dislocations), which will be confined through the incorporation of a graded buffer layer. The resulting surface will have, on the one hand a good structural quality; and on the other hand the desired lattice parameter. Different research groups have been working in the last years in a structure similar to the one here described, being most of their efforts directed towards the optimization of the heteroepitaxial growth of III-V compounds on Si, with the primary goal of minimizing the appearance of crystal defects. However, none of these groups has paid much attention to the development and optimization of the bottom silicon cell, which, indeed, will play an important role on the overall solar cell performance. In this respect, the idea of this thesis is to complete the work done so far in this field by focusing on the design and optimization of the bottom silicon cell, to harness its efficiency. This work is divided into six chapters, organized according to the natural progress of the bottom cell development. After a brief introduction to the growth of III-V semiconductors on Si substrates, pointing out the different alternatives for their integration; we move to the experimental part, which is initiated by an extensive description and characterization of silicon substrates -the base of the III-V structure-. In this chapter, a comprehensive analysis of the different treatments (chemical and thermal) required for preparing silicon surfaces for subsequent epitaxial growth is presented. Next step on the development of the bottom cell is the formation of the p-n junction itself, which is faced in Chapter 3. Firstly, the optimization of the emitter configuration (in terms of doping and thickness) is handling by analytic models. This study includes a comparison between the different alternatives for the emitter formation, evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. After the theoretical design of the emitter, it is defined (through the modeling of the P-in-Si diffusion process) a practical parameter space for the experimental implementation of this emitter configuration. The characterization of these emitters through different analytical tools (i.e. ECV or SIMS) will validate and provide experimental support for the theoretical models. A side effect of the formation of the emitter by P diffusion is the roughening of the Si surface. Accordingly, once the p-n junction is formed, it is necessary to ensure that the Si surface is smooth enough and clean for subsequent phases. Indeed, the roughness of the Si must be carefully controlled since it will be the basis for the epitaxial growth. Accordingly, after quantifying (experimentally and by theoretical models) the impact of the phosphorus on the silicon surface morphology, different alternatives for the recovery of the surface are proposed in order to achieve a sub-nanometer roughness which does not endanger the quality of the incoming III-V layers. Moving a step further in the development of the Ill-V/Si structure implies to address the challenges associated to the GaP on Si nucleation. On the one hand, this layer will provide surface passivation to the emitter. In this sense, the growth of the III-V layer must be homogeneous and continuous so the Si emitter gets fully passivated, providing a minimal surface recombination velocity at the interface. On the other hand, the growth should be such that the appearance of typical defects related to the growth of a polar layer on a non-polar substrate is minimized. Chapter 5 includes an exhaustive study of the GaP on Si nucleation process, exploring different nucleation routines for achieving a high morphological and structural quality, which will be characterized by means of different microscopy techniques. Finally, an extensive study of the photovoltaic properties of the bottom cell and its evolution during key phases in the fabrication of a MOCVD-grown III-V-on-Si epitaxial structure (i.e. the formation of the bottom cell; and the growth of III-V layers) will be presented in the last part of this thesis. This study was conducted in collaboration with The Ohio State University, who has extensive experience in the growth of III-V materials on silicon. This thesis concludes by highlighting the overall conclusions of the presented work and proposing different lines of work to be undertaken in the future.

The crystal structure of raite was solved and refined from data collected at Beamline Insertion Device 13 at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, using a 3 × 3 × 65 μm single crystal. The refined lattice constants of the monoclinic unit cell are a = 15.1(1) Å; b = 17.6(1) Å; c = 5.290(4) Å; β = 100.5(2)°; space group C2/m. The structure, including all reflections, refined to a final R = 0.07. Raite occurs in hyperalkaline rocks from the Kola peninsula, Russia. The structure consists of alternating layers of a hexagonal chicken-wire pattern of 6-membered SiO4 rings. Tetrahedral apices of a chain of Si six-rings, parallel to the c-axis, alternate in pointing up and down. Two six-ring Si layers are connected by edge-sharing octahedral bands of Na+ and Mn3+ also parallel to c. The band consists of the alternation of finite Mn–Mn and Na–Mn–Na chains. As a consequence of the misfit between octahedral and tetrahedral elements, regions of the Si–O layers are arched and form one-dimensional channels bounded by 12 Si tetrahedra and 2 Na octahedra. The channels along the short c-axis in raite are filled by isolated Na(OH,H2O)6 octahedra. The distorted octahedrally coordinated Ti4+ also resides in the channel and provides the weak linkage of these isolated Na octahedra and the mixed octahedral tetrahedral framework. Raite is structurally related to intersilite, palygorskite, sepiolite, and amphibole.

Gracilaria lemaneiformis Bory is an economically important alga that is primarily used for agar production. Although tetraspores are ideal seeds for the cultivation of G. lemaneiformis, the most popular culture method is currently based on vegetative fragments, which is labor-intensive and time-consuming. In this study, we optimized the conditions for tetraspore release and evaluated the photosynthetic activities of different colonies formed from the branches of G. lemaneiformis using a PAM (pulse-amplitude-modulated) measuring system. The results showed that variations in temperature and salinityhad significant effects on tetraspore yield. However, variations in the photon flux density (from 15 mu mol m(-2) s(-1) to 480 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)) had no apparent effect on tetraspore yield. Moreover, the PAM-parameters Y(I), Y(II), ETR(I), ETR(II) and F (v)/F (m) of colonies formed from different branches showed the same trend: parameter values of first generation branches > second generation branches > third generation branches. These results suggest that the photosynthetic activities of different colonies of branches changed with the same trend. Furthermore, photosynthesis in G. lemaneiformis was found to be involved in vegetative reproduction and tetraspore formation. Finally, the first generation branches grew slowly, but accumulated organic compounds to form large numbers of tetraspores. Taken together, these results showed that the first generation branches are ideal materials for the release of tetraspores.

The Canadian Middle Atmosphere Modelling (MAM) project is a collaboration between thé Atmospheric Environment Service (AES) of Environment Canada and several Canadian universities. Its goal is thé development of a comprehensive General Circulation Model of the troposphere-stratosphere-mesosphere System, starting from the AES/CCCma third-generation atmospheric General Circulation Model. This paper describes the basic features of the first-generation Canadian MAM and some aspects of its radiative-dynamical climatology. Standard first-order mean diagnostics are presented for monthly means and for the annual cycle of zonal-mean winds and temperatures. The mean meridional circulation is examined, and comparison is made between thé steady diabatic, downward controlled, and residual stream functions. It is found that downward control holds quite well in the monthly mean through most of the middle atmosphere, even during equinoctal periods. The relative roles of different drag processes in determining the mean downwelling over the wintertime polar middle stratosphere is examined, and the vertical structure of the drag is quantified.

Today, third generation networks are consolidated realities, and user expectations on new applications and services are becoming higher and higher. Therefore, new systems and technologies are necessary to move towards the market needs and the user requirements. This has driven the development of fourth generation networks. ”Wireless network for the fourth generation” is the expression used to describe the next step in wireless communications. There is no formal definition for what these fourth generation networks are; however, we can say that the next generation networks will be based on the coexistence of heterogeneous networks, on the integration with the existing radio access network (e.g. GPRS, UMTS, WIFI, ...) and, in particular, on new emerging architectures that are obtaining more and more relevance, as Wireless Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks (WASN). Thanks to their characteristics, fourth generation wireless systems will be able to offer custom-made solutions and applications personalized according to the user requirements; they will offer all types of services at an affordable cost, and solutions characterized by flexibility, scalability and reconfigurability. This PhD’s work has been focused on WASNs, autoconfiguring networks which are not based on a fixed infrastructure, but are characterized by being infrastructure less, where devices have to automatically generate the network in the initial phase, and maintain it through reconfiguration procedures (if nodes’ mobility, or energy drain, etc..., cause disconnections). The main part of the PhD activity has been focused on an analytical study on connectivity models for wireless ad hoc and sensor networks, nevertheless a small part of my work was experimental. Anyway, both the theoretical and experimental activities have had a common aim, related to the performance evaluation of WASNs. Concerning the theoretical analysis, the objective of the connectivity studies has been the evaluation of models for the interference estimation. This is due to the fact that interference is the most important performance degradation cause in WASNs. As a consequence, is very important to find an accurate model that allows its investigation, and I’ve tried to obtain a model the most realistic and general as possible, in particular for the evaluation of the interference coming from bounded interfering areas (i.e. a WiFi hot spot, a wireless covered research laboratory, ...). On the other hand, the experimental activity has led to Throughput and Packet Error Rare measurements on a real IEEE802.15.4 Wireless Sensor Network.

The Dynamic Data eXchange (DDX) is our third generation platform for building distributed robot controllers. DDX allows a coalition of programs to share data at run-time through an efficient shared memory mechanism managed by a store. Further, stores on multiple machines can be linked by means of a global catalog and data is moved between the stores on an as needed basis by multi-casting. Heterogeneous computer systems are handled. We describe the architecture of DDX and the standard clients we have developed that let us rapidly build complex control systems with minimal coding.

By integrating stewardship theory and entrepreneurial orientation perspectives we contribute to the understanding of the concept of family enterprising. Using excerpts from a single case study we provide insight into how a third generation Australian family has evolved and transformed by embracing the notion of family enterprising, which, we suggest, places them in a strong position for sustainability across generations.

Purpose. To investigate the clinical and subjective performance of asmofilcon A, a new third generation silicone hydrogel contact lens during 6-night extended wear (EW) over 6 months. Methods. A prospective, randomized, single-masked study was conducted. Sixty experienced daily wear soft contact lens wearers were randomly assigned to wear either asmofilcon A or senofilcon A contact lenses bilaterally for 6 months on an EW basis. Evaluations were conducted at contact lens delivery and after 1 week, 4 weeks, 3 and 6 months of EW. Results. Fifty subjects (83%) successfully completed the study. Two subjects experienced adverse events; one unilateral red eye with asmofilcon A and one asymptomatic infiltrate with senofilcon A. There were no significant differences in high or low contrast distance visual acuity between asmofilcon A and senofilcon A; however, low contrast distance visual acuity decreased significantly over time with both contact lens types (p < 0.05). The two lens types did not vary significantly with respect to any of the objective and subjective measures assessed (p > 0.05). Superior palpebral conjunctival injection showed a statistically significant increase over time with both lens types (p < 0.05). Both lens types were rated highly with respect to overall comfort, with subjects reporting 14 or 15 h of comfortable lens wearing time per day at each of the study visits (p > 0.05). Overall satisfaction ratings were also very high at all visits, with median scores of 95 (86 to 99) for asmofilcon A and 90 (85 to 96) for senofilcon A at 6 months (p > 0.05). Conclusions. Over 6 months of EW, the asmofilcon A contact lens performed in a similar manner to senofilcon A with respect to visual acuity, ocular health, and contact lens performance measures. Longer-term EW studies are required to investigate the changes over time observed with both lens types.

Rapid mobile technological evolution and the large economic stake in commercial development of mobile technological innovation make it necessary to understand consumers' motivations towards the latest advanced and updated technologies and services. 3G (the third generation of mobile communication technology) recently started its commercial development in the world‘s largest mobile communication market, China, after being delayed for a few years. Although China fell behind in commercially developing 3G, it is difficult to ignore studying this area, given the size of the market and promising future developments. This market deserves focused research attention, especially in terms of consumer behaviour towards the adoption of mobile technological innovation. Thus, the program of research in this thesis was designed to investigate how Chinese consumers respond to the use of this newly launched mobile technological innovation, with a focus on what factors affect their 3G adoption intentions. It aimed to yield important insights into Chinese consumers‘ innovation adoption behaviours and to contribute to marketing and innovation adoption research. Furthermore, it has been documented that Chinese consumers vary widely between regions in dialect, lifestyle, culture, purchasing power and consumption attitudes. Based on economic development and local culture, China can be divided geographically into distinctive regional consumer markets. Consequently, the results of consumer behaviour research in one region may not necessarily be extrapolated to other regions. In order to better understand Chinese consumers, the disparities between regions should not be overlooked. Therefore, another objective of this program of research was to examine regional variances in consumers' innovation adoption, specifically to identify the similarities and differences in factors influencing 3G adoption, contributing to intra-cultural studies. An extensive literature review identified two gaps: current China-based innovation adoption research studies are limited in providing adequate prediction and explanation of Chinese consumers' intentions to adopt 3G; and there was limited knowledge about the differences between regional Chinese consumers in innovation adoption. Two research questions therefore were developed to address these gaps: 1) What factors influence Chinese consumers' intentions to adopt 3G? 2) How do Chinese consumers differ between regional markets in the relative influence of the factors in determining their intentions to adopt 3G? In accordance with postpositivist research philosophy, two studies were designed to answer the research questions, using mixed methods. To meet the research objectives, the two studies were both conducted in three regional cities, namely Beijing, Shanghai and Wuhan, centred in the three regions of North China, East China and Central China respectively, with sufficient cultural and economical regional variances. Study One was an exploratory study with qualitative research methods. It involved 45 in-depth interviews in the three research cities to gain rich insights into the research context from natural settings. Eight important concepts related to 3G adoption were generated from analysis of the interview data, namely utilitarian expectation, hedonic expectation, status gains, status loss avoidance, normative influence, external influence, cost and quality concern. The concepts of social loss avoidance and quality concern were two unique findings, whereas the other concepts were similar to the findings in Western innovation adoption studies. Moreover, variances in 3G adoption between three groups of regional consumers were also identified, focusing on the perceptions of two concepts, namely status gains and normative influence. The conceptual research model was then developed incorporating the eight concepts plus the dependent variable of adoption intention. The hypothesized relationships between the nine constructs and hypotheses about the differences between regional consumers in 3G adoption were informed by the findings of Study One and the literature reviewed. Study Two was a quantitative study involving a web-based survey and statistical analysis procedure. The web-based survey attracted 800 residents from the three research cities, 270 from Beijing, 265 from Shanghai and 265 from Wuhan. They comprised three research samples for this study and consequently three sets of data were obtained. The data was analysed by Structural Equation Modelling together with Multi-group Analysis. The analysis confirmed that the concepts generated in Study One were influential factors affecting Chinese consumers' 3G adoption intention, with the exception of the concept external influence. Differences were found between the samples in the three research cities in the effect of hedonic expectation, status gains, status loss avoidance and normative influence on 3G adoption intention. The two Studies undertaken in this thesis contributed a better understanding of Chinese consumers' intentions to adopt advanced mobile technological innovation, namely 3G, in three regional markets. This knowledge contributes to innovation adoption and intra-cultural research, as well as consumer behaviour theory. It is also able to inform international and domestic telecommunication companies to develop and deliver more effective marketing strategies across Chinese regional markets. Limitations in the research were identified in terms of the sampling techniques used and the design of the two Studies. Future research was suggested in other Chinese regional markets and into consumer adoption of other types of mobile technological innovations.

Australian higher education institutions (HEIs) have entered a new phase of regulation and accreditation which includes performance-based funding relating to the participation and retention of students from social and cultural groups previously underrepresented in higher education. However, in addressing these priorities, it is critical that HEIs do not further disadvantage students from certain groups by identifying them for attention because of their social or cultural backgrounds, circumstances which are largely beyond the control of students. In response, many HEIs are focusing effort on university-wide approaches to enhancing the student experience because such approaches will enhance the engagement, success and retention of all students, and in doing so, particularly benefit those students who come from underrepresented groups. Measuring and benchmarking student experiences and engagement that arise from these efforts is well supported by extensive collections of student experience survey data. However no comparable instrument exists that measures the capability of institutions to influence and/or enhance student experiences where capability is an indication of how well an organisational process does what it is designed to do (Rosemann & de Bruin, 2005). This paper proposes that the concept of a maturity model (Marshall, 2010; Paulk, 1999) may be useful as a way of assessing the capability of HEIs to provide and implement student engagement, success and retention activities. We will describe the Student Engagement, Success and Retention Maturity Model (SESR-MM), (Clarke, Nelson & Stoodley, 2012; Nelson, Clarke & Stoodley, 2012) we are currently investigating. We will discuss if our research may address the current gap by facilitating the development of an SESR-MM instrument that aims (i) to enable institutions to assess the capability of their current student engagement and retention programs and strategies to influence and respond to student experiences within the institution; and (ii) to provide institutions with the opportunity to understand various practices across the sector with a view to further improving programs and practices relevant to their context. The first aim of our research is to extend the generational approach which has been useful in considering the evolutionary nature of the first year experience (FYE) (Wilson, 2009). Three generations have been identified and explored: First generation approaches that focus on co-curricular strategies (e.g. orientation and peer programs); Second generation approaches that focus on curriculum (e.g. pedagogy, curriculum design, and learning and teaching practice); and third generation approaches—also referred to as transition pedagogy—that focus on the production of an institution-wide integrated holistic intentional blend of curricular and co-curricular activities (Kift, Nelson & Clarke, 2010). The second aim of this research is to move beyond assessments of students’ experiences to focus on assessing institutional processes and their capability to influence student engagement. In essence, we propose to develop and use the maturity model concept to produce an instrument that will indicate the capability of HEIs to manage and improve student engagement, success and retention programs and strategies. Australian higher education institutions (HEIs) have entered a new phase of regulation and accreditation which includes performance-based funding relating to the participation and retention of students from social and cultural groups previously underrepresented in higher education. However, in addressing these priorities, it is critical that HEIs do not further disadvantage students from certain groups by identifying them for attention because of their social or cultural backgrounds, circumstances which are largely beyond the control of students. In response, many HEIs are focusing effort on university-wide approaches to enhancing the student experience because such approaches will enhance the engagement, success and retention of all students, and in doing so, particularly benefit those students who come from underrepresented groups. Measuring and benchmarking student experiences and engagement that arise from these efforts is well supported by extensive collections of student experience survey data. However no comparable instrument exists that measures the capability of institutions to influence and/or enhance student experiences where capability is an indication of how well an organisational process does what it is designed to do (Rosemann & de Bruin, 2005). We have proposed that the concept of a maturity model (Marshall, 2010; Paulk, 1999) may be useful as a way of assessing the capability of HEIs to provide and implement student engagement, success and retention activities and we are currently articulating a Student Engagement, Success and Retention Maturity Model (SESR-MM), (Clarke, Nelson & Stoodley, 2012; Nelson, Clarke & Stoodley, 2012). Our research aims to address the current gap by facilitating the development of an SESR-MM instrument that aims (i) to enable institutions to assess the capability of their current student engagement and retention programs and strategies to influence and respond to student experiences within the institution; and (ii) to provide institutions with the opportunity to understand various practices across the sector with a view to further improving programs and practices relevant to their context. Our research extends the generational approach which has been useful in considering the evolutionary nature of the first year experience (FYE) (Wilson, 2009). Three generations have been identified and explored: First generation approaches that focus on co-curricular strategies (e.g. orientation and peer programs); Second generation approaches that focus on curriculum (e.g. pedagogy, curriculum design, and learning and teaching practice); and third generation approaches—also referred to as transition pedagogy—that focus on the production of an institution-wide integrated holistic intentional blend of curricular and co-curricular activities (Kift, Nelson & Clarke, 2010). Our research also moves beyond assessments of students’ experiences to focus on assessing institutional processes and their capability to influence student engagement. In essence, we propose to develop and use the maturity model concept to produce an instrument that will indicate the capability of HEIs to manage and improve student engagement, success and retention programs and strategies. The issues explored in this workshop are (i) whether the maturity model concept can be usefully applied to provide a measure of institutional capability for SESR; (ii) whether the SESR-MM can be used to assess the maturity of a particular set of institutional practices; and (iii) whether a collective assessment of an institution’s SESR capabilities can provide an indication of the maturity of the institution’s SESR activities. The workshop will be approached in three stages. Firstly, participants will be introduced to the key characteristics of maturity models, followed by a discussion of the SESR-MM and the processes involved in its development. Secondly, participants will be provided with resources to facilitate the development of a maturity model and an assessment instrument for a range of institutional processes and related practices. In the final stage of the workshop, participants will “assess” the capability of these practices to provide a collective assessment of the maturity of these processes.
