Electrophilic substitution of acylmethanes (methyl ketones), RCOCH3 (R = i-Pr, 1; Et, 2; Me, 3) with aryltellurium trichlorides, ArTeCl3 (Ar = 1-C10H7, Np, A; 2,4,6-Me3C6H2, Mes, B; 4-MeOC6H4, Anisyl, C) under mild conditions affords the corresponding acylmethyl(aryl)tellurium dichlorides (RCOCH2)ArTeCl2. Reduction of the dichlorides, gives tellurides, (i-PrCOCH2)ArTe, 1A–1C, which give the corresponding dihalides, (i-PrCOCH2)ArTeX2 (X = Cl, 1Aa–1Ca; Br, 1Ab–1Cb; I, 1Ac–1Cc) when reacted in situ with SO2Cl2, Br2 or I2. The unsymmetric tellurides are labile towards disproportionation and attempts to obtain them lead to the isolation of Ar2Te2 except in the case of (i-PrCOCH2)MesTe ( 1B), which represents an interesting example of a kinetically stable aryl(alkyl)telluride. All the dihalomesityltellurium(IV) derivatives show separate 1H and 13C NMR signals for the ortho methyls irrespective of the sizes of R and X ligands. The telluride, 1B with free rotation about Te–C(mesityl) bond shows, like the unsymmetric diorganotellurium(IV) dihalides, only one 125Te NMR signal. The 1,4-chelating behavior of the acyl ligand among diorganotellurium(IV) compounds is inferred from the X-ray diffraction data for 1Aa, 1Ac, 1Ba, 1Bb, 1Ca and 1Cc which are indicative of the presence of intramolecular TeO secondary bonding interactions (SBIs) at least in the solid state. As a consequence, steric repulsion in case of the mesityltellurium(IV) derivatives, 1Ba and 1Bb, reaches the threshold so as to cause loss of two-fold rotational symmetry of the mesityl group about the Te–C(mesityl) bond axis. Intermolecular C–HO H-bonding interactions appears to stabilize such an orientation of the aryl ligand at least in the solid state.

A frequency upconversion process in Pr(3+) doped TeO(2)-ZnO glasses containing silver nanoparticles is studied under excitation with a nanosecond laser operating at 590 nm, in resonance with the (3)H(4)-->(1)D(2) transition. The excited Pr(3+) ions exchange energy in the presence of the nanoparticles, originating efficient conversion from orange to blue. The enhancement in the intensity of the luminescence at similar to 482 nm, corresponding to the (3)P(0)-->(3)H(4) transition, is due to the influence of the large local field on the Pr(3+) ions, which are located near the metallic nanoparticles. We report on the nonlinear (NL) optical properties of glassy TeO2-GeO2-K2O-Bi2O3 at lambda = 800 nm and lambda = 1,064 nm. Using the Kerr gate technique with a laser delivering 150 fs pulses at 800 nm, we demonstrated the fast NL response of the samples. The modulus of the NL refractive index, n (2), at 800 nm was similar to 10(-15) cm(2)/W. The Z-scan technique was used to determine n (2) a parts per thousand +10(-15) cm(2)/W, at 1,064 nm with pulses of 17 ps. The two-photon absorption coefficient, alpha (2), was smaller than the minimum that we can measure (< 0.003 cm/GW). The figure of merit n (2)/alpha (2) lambda was calculated and indicates that this glass composition has large potential to be used for all-optical switching.

The naturally occurring butanolides (-)-blastmycinolactol, (+)-blastmycinone, (-)-NFX-2, (+)-anti-mycinone as well as the four stereoisomers of the butenolide Acaterin were prepared in high enantiomeric purity using hydroxy-vinyl tellurides as starting materials. The crystallographically determined structure of biologically active 4,4-dichloro-1,3-diphenyl-4-telluraoct-2-en-1-one, 3, shows the coordination geometry for Te to be distorted psi-pentagonal bipyramidal based on a C2OCl3(lone pair) donor set. Notable is the presence of an intramolecular axial Te center dot center dot center dot O (carbonyl) interaction, a design element included to reduce hydrolysis. Raman and molecular modelling studies indicate the persistence of the Te center dot center dot center dot O(carbonyl) interaction in the solution (CHCl3) and gasphases, respectively. Docking studies of 3' (i.e. original 3 less one chloride) with Cathepsin B reveals a change in the configuration about the vinyl C = C bond. i.e. to E from Z (crystal structure). This isomerism allows the optimisation of interactions in the complex which features a covalent Te-SGCys29 bond. Crucially, the E configuration observed for 3' allows for the formation of a hypervalent Te center dot center dot center dot O interaction as well as an O center dot center dot center dot H-O hydrogen bond with the Gly27 and Glu122 residues, respectively. Additional stabilisation is afforded by a combination of interactions spanning the S1, S2, S1' and S2' sub-sites of Cathepsin B. The greater experimental inhibitory activity of 3 compared with analogues is rationalised by the additional interactions formed between 3' and the His110 and His111 residues in the occluding loop, which serve to hinder the entrance to the active site. Prior to the last few years little practical use was made of the element tellurium, which is obtained from gold and silver tellurides and from the slimes of electrolytic copper refineries. Lately, however, more study has been made of its properties when alloyed with other metals. It was the purpose of this thesis to study the effects of the addition of tellurium to lead, particularly in small amounts.

Today considerable work is being done in the compressed metal powder field which is gradually obtaining prominence as a valuable branch of metallurgy. The mass of data, however, has led to many different ideas on the results of sintering.
