Radiotherapy is a widely used treatment option in cancer. However, recent evidence suggests that doses of ionizing radiation (IR) delivered inside the tumor target volume, during fractionated radiotherapy, can promote tumor invasion and metastasis. Furthermore, the tissues that surround the tumor area are also exposed to low doses of IR that are lower than those delivered inside the tumor mass, because external radiotherapy is delivered to the tumor through multiple radiation beams, in order to prevent damage of organs at risk. The biological effects of these low doses of IR on the healthy tissue surrounding the tumor area, and in particular on the vasculature remain largely to be determined. We found that doses of IR lower or equal to 0.8 Gy enhance endothelial cell migration without impinging on cell proliferation or survival. Moreover, we show that low-dose IR induces a rapid phosphorylation of several endothelial cell proteins, including the Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) Receptor-2 and induces VEGF production in hypoxia mimicking conditions. By activating the VEGF Receptor-2, low-dose IR enhances endothelial cell migration and prevents endothelial cell death promoted by an anti-angiogenic drug, bevacizumab. In addition, we observed that low-dose IR accelerates embryonic angiogenic sprouting during zebrafish development and promotes adult angiogenesis during zebrafish fin regeneration and in the murine Matrigel assay. Using murine experimental models of leukemia and orthotopic breast cancer, we show that low-dose IR promotes tumor growth and metastasis and that these effects were prevented by the administration of a VEGF receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitor immediately before IR exposure. These findings demonstrate a new mechanism to the understanding of the potential pro-metastatic effect of IR and may provide a new rationale basis to the improvement of current radiotherapy protocols.

El text que es mostra a continuació resumeix el treball realitzat en la primera fase de recerca del projecte titulat provisionalment "Del teatre líric a la cançó popular: construcció social a partir de la música en València (1900-1959)". Aquest treball ha tingut una durada de set mesos entre febrer i agost de 2009. El projecte pretén dibuixar les línies que uneixen teatre líric i cançó popular fent especial èmfasi en els mecanismes de creació d'identitat de gènere, que va envoltar tot aquest procés. Per aquests motius, la recerca está construïda sobre dos eixos: entrevistes amb les fonts orals i buidatge dels principals fons bibliogrífics per a l'estudi de les fonts primàries i secundàries del primer període analitzat (1931-1959), focalitzat en els pobles que envolten la ciutat de València. Les conclusions apunten cap a una clara vinculació entre teatre líric i cançó popular, així com la utilització dels esdeveniments musicals amb finalitats conformadores de rols socials per part de les institucions sociopolítiques. Les diferències entre fonts primàries i fonts orals assenyalen una naturalització de la desigualtat de gènere a través de la música que han arribat fins als nostres dies, per la qual cosa és necessari l'estudi i anàlisi de la memòria musical.

Anopheles albitarsis embryogenesis was analyzed through confocal microscopy of clarified eggs. Using Drosophila melanogaster as reference system, the major morphogenetic events (blastoderm, gastrulation, germ band extension, germ band retraction, dorsal closure) were identified. The kinetics of early events is proportionally similar in both systems, but late movements (from germ band retraction on) progress slower in An. albitarsis. Major differences in An. albitarsis related to D. melanogaster were: (1) pole cells do not protrude from the blastoderm; (2) the mosquito embryo undergoes a 180º rotation movement, along its longitudinal axis; (3) the head remains individualized throughout embryogenesis; (4) extraembryonary membranes surround the whole embryo. A novel kind of malaria control is under development and is based on the use of genetically modified mosquitoes. Phenotypic analysis of the embryonic development of mutants will be imposed as part of the evaluation of effectiveness and risk of employment of this strategy in the field. In order to accomplish this, knowledge of the wild type embryo is a prerequisite. Morphological studies will also serve as basis for subsequent development biology approaches.

The group I metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) has been implicated in the development of cortical sensory maps. However, its precise roles in the synaptic function and plasticity of thalamocortical (TC) connections remain unknown. Here we first show that in mGluR5 knockout (KO) mice bred onto a C57BL6 background cytoarchitectonic differentiation into barrels is missing, but the representations for large whiskers are identifiable as clusters of TC afferents. The altered dendritic morphology of cortical layer IV spiny stellate neurons in mGluR5 KO mice implicates a role for mGluR5 in the dendritic morphogenesis of excitatory neurons. Next, in vivo single-unit recordings of whisker-evoked activity in mGluR5 KO adults demonstrated a preserved topographical organization of the whisker representation, but a significantly diminished temporal discrimination of center to surround whiskers in the responses of individual neurons. To evaluate synaptic function at TC synapses in mGluR5 KO mice, whole-cell voltage-clamp recording was conducted in acute TC brain slices prepared from postnatal day 4-11 mice. At mGluR5 KO TC synapses, N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) currents decayed faster and synaptic strength was more easily reduced, but more difficult to strengthen by Hebbian-type pairing protocols, despite a normal developmental increase in alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor (AMPAR)-mediated currents and presynaptic function. We have therefore demonstrated that mGluR5 is required for synaptic function/plasticity at TC synapses as barrels are forming, and we propose that these functional alterations at the TC synapse are the basis of the abnormal anatomical and functional development of the somatosensory cortex in the mGluR5 KO mouse.

Biomphalaria glabrata and Schistosoma mansoni relationship was studied by light microscopy (LM) and freeze-fracture replica technique (FFR). We observed very thin cytoplasmic extensions of hemocytes in the LM, which then surround immobilize the miracidia. FFR images showed that the contact site between hemocytes cytoplasmic extensions and the external tegumentary coat involved only superficial layers of miracidia. Numerous vacuoles and filopodia were observed in the hemocyte cytoplasm, the latter binding with those from neighboring cells. In spite of the close interfilopodia contact, no cellular junctions were seen at these sites nor between filopodia-miracidia contact areas. The observed migration of hemocytes and their disposition in layers surrounding the miracidia in vitro correspond to previous studies.

Intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) is a conformal radiotherapy that produces concave and irregular target volume dose distributions. IMRT has a potential to reduce the volume of healthy tissue irradiated to a high dose, but this often at the price of an increased volume of normal tissue irradiated to a low dose. Clinical benefits of IMRT are expected to be most pronounced at the body sites where sensitive normal tissues surround or are located next to a target with a complex 3D shape. The irradiation doses needed for tumor control are often markedly higher than the tolerance of the radiation sensitive structures such as the spinal cord, the optic nerves, the eyes, or the salivary glands in the treatment of head and neck cancer. Parotid gland salivary flow is markedly reduced following a cumulative dose of 30 50 Gy given with conventional fractionation and xerostomia may be prevented in most patients using a conformal parotid-sparing radiotherapy technique. However, in cohort studies where IMRT was compared with conventional and conformal radiotherapy techniques in the treatment of laryngeal or oropharyngeal carcinoma, the dosimetric advantage of IMRT translated into a reduction of late salivary toxicity with no apparent adverse impact on the tumor control. IMRT might reduce the radiation dose to the major salivary glands and the risk of permanent xerostomia without compromizing the likelihood for cure. Alternatively, IMRT might allow the target dose escalation at a given level of normal tissue damage. We describe here the clinical results on postirradiation salivary gland function in head and neck cancer patients treated with IMRT, and the technical aspects of IMRT applied. The results suggest that the major salivary gland function can be maintained with IMRT without a need to compromise the clinical target volume dose, or the locoregional control.

Opinnäytetyöni Kahden kulttuurin ääniä on monimuototyö, jonka teososa koostuu kuudesta suunnittelemastani ja äänittämästäni konkreettisen musiikin teoksesta. Materiaali on äänitetty 2006 kesällä ja syksyllä Suomessa ja Japanissa. Kirjallisessa osassa tarkastelin lajityypin historiaa sekä omaan työskentelyyni peilaten keinoja, joilla tein kenttä-äänistä musiikillisen teoksen jaettuna kolmeen eri teemaan kunkin maan äänimateriaalista: luontoäänet, kaupunkiäänet sekä uskonnollisten palvelusten äänet. Teoksille ei tehty ennakkokäsikirjoitusta, vaan niiden kokoaminen tapahtui konkreettisen musiikin perinteiden mukaisesti vasta äänityöasemalla. Työ koostettiin ja miksattiin stereona ja surroundina (5.0) Pro Toolsissa vuoden 2007 aikana. Osa äänimateriaalista säilyi käsittelemättömänä, osa käsiteltiin lähes tunnistamattomaksi. Kahden kulttuurin ääniä poikkeaa lajityypin klassikoista nopealla tempollaan ja runsaalla tunnelmien vaihtelevuudellaan. Toisinaan työ lähentelee jo nykyaikaisia elektronisen musiikin alalajeja. Teokset sisältävät paljon elementtejä, jotka aiheuttavat eri ihmisissä erilaisia assosiaatioita. Tämän vuoksi konkreettinen musiikki voisi hyvin toimia muun muassa musiikkiterapian välineenä.

Signals detected with functional brain imaging techniques are based on the coupling of neuronal activity with energy metabolism. Techniques such as positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) allow the visualization of brain areas that are activated by a variety of sensory, motor or cognitive tasks. Despite the technological sophistication of these brain imaging techniques, the precise mechanisms and cell types involved in coupling and in generating metabolic signals are still debated. Recent experimental data on the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie the fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) - based PET imaging point to a critical role of a particular brain cell type, the astrocytes, in coupling neuronal activity to glucose utilization. Indeed, astrocytes possess receptors and re-uptake sites for a variety of neurotransmitters, including glutamate, the predominant excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain, In addition, astrocytic end-feet, which surround capillaries, are enriched in the specific glucose transporter GLUT-1. These features allow astrocytes to "sense" synaptic activity and to couple it with energy metabolism. In vivo and in vitro data support the following functional model: in response to glutamate released by active neurons, glucose is predominantly taken up by astrocytic end-feet; glucose is then metabolized to lactate which provides a preferred energy substrate for neurons. These data support the notion that astrocytes markedly contribute to the FDG-PET signal.

More than half of invasive bacterial infections are Gram-positive in origin. This class of bacteria has neither endotoxins nor an outer membrane, yet it generates some of the most powerful inflammatory responses known in medicine. Some recent seminal studies go a long way toward settling the controversies that surround the process by which Gram-positive bacterial surfaces trigger the human immune system. Although the components of the cell wall are now chemically defined in exquisite detail and the interaction with the toll-like receptor 2 pathway has been discovered, it is only very recently that definitive studies combining these advanced biochemical and cell biological tools have been carried out. It is these breakthrough studies that have finally confirmed the paradigm of innate sensors for Gram-positive bacteria.

The effect of dissolved nutrients on growth, nutrient content and uptake rates of Chaetomorpha linum in a Mediterranean coastal lagoon (Tancada, Ebro delta, NE Spain) was studied in laboratory experiments. Water was enriched with distinct forms of nitrogen, such as nitrate or ammonium and phosphorus. Enrichment with N, P or with both nutrients resulted in a significant increase in the tissue content of these nutrients. N-enrichment was followed by an increase in chlorophyll content after 4 days of treatment, although the difference was only significant when nitrate was added without P. P-enrichment had no significant effect on chlorophyll content. In all the treatments an increase in biomass was obseved after 10 days. This increase was higher in the N+P treatments. In all the treatments the uptake rate was significantly higher when nutrients were added than in control jars. The uptake rate of N, as ammonium, and P were significantly higher when they were added alone while that of N as nitrate was higher in the N+P treatment. In the P-enriched cultures, the final P-content of macroalgal tissues was ten-fold that of the initial tissue concentrations, thereby indicating luxury P-uptake. Moreover, at the end of the incubation the N:P ratio increased to 80, showing that P rather than N was the limiting factor for C. linum in the Tancada lagoon. The relatively high availability of N is related to the N inputs from rice fields that surround the lagoon and to P binding in sediments.

This review focuses on the role of proteins in the production and maintenance of foam in both sparkling wines and beer. The quality of the foam in beer but especially in sparkling wines depends, among other factors, on the presence of mannoproteins released from the yeast cell walls during autolysis. These proteins are hydrophobic, highly glycosylated, and their molecular masses range from 10 to 200 kDa characteristics that allow mannoproteins to surround and thus stabilize the gas bubbles of the foam. Both the production and stabilization of foam also depend on other proteins. In wine, these include grape-derived proteins such as vacuolar invertase; in beer, barley-derived proteins, such as LTP1, protein Z, and hordein-derived polypeptides, are even more important in this respect than mannoproteins

Värin havaitseminen on monimutkainen tapahtuma, johon vaikuttaa lukuisia tekijöitä. Havaittua väriä eli värivaikutelmaa ennustavat mallit huomioivat taustan ja valonlähteen kromaattisuus- ja intensiteettiominaisuuksia. Värejä käyttävässä teollisuudessa on tarve värien määrittelyn lisäksi mitata värieroja esimerkiksi värillisten tuotteiden laadunvalvonnassa. Värivaikutelmamalleja ja värierojenlaskentamalleja on pitkään kehitetty toisistaan erillisinä. Tässä työssä tarkastellaan värivaikutelmailmiöitä ja sekä värivaikutelma- ja värieromallien ominaisuuksia. Lisäksi selvitetään värivaikutelmamallien ja värieromallien yhteensovittamista.

RESUME Les follicules des vibrisses des rongeurs sont représentés sous la forme d'une carte topographique dans le cortex à tonneaux. Lorsque un groupe de vibrisses est coupé pendant plusieurs jours chez un rongeur adulte, en laissant les autres vibrisses intactes, le champ réceptif des neurones du cortex à tonneaux est modifié, ce qui démontre que les cartes corticales sont plastiques. Dans notre étude, une expérience sensorielle a été induite chez une souris adulte se comportant librement en stimulant chroniquement une de ses vibrisses pendant 24h. Par une analyse des potentiels de champ locaux, nous démontrons que les caractéristiques spatiotemporelles du flux d'excitation évoqué par la vibrisse principale (VP) dans la colonne corticale correspondante à la vibrisse stimulée n'est pas altéré. Par contre, l'enregistrement des potentiels d'actions d'un total de 1041 neurones à travers le cortex à tonneaux révèlent plusieurs modifications de l'activité neuronale. L'activité spontanée ainsi que la réponse évoquée par la VP sont déprimées dans la colonne corticale stimulée (nombre moyen de potentiels d'action évoqués par la VP diminue de 25 % et 36% dans la couche IV et les couches II&III). La réponse des neurones à la vibrisse stimulée diminue également dans les colonnes corticales adjacentes, «non-stimulées». La dépression de l'activité spontanée et de la réponse à la VP est localisée à la colonne corticale stimulée. Dans le tonneau stimulé, la première partie de la réponse à la VP n'est pas affaiblie, démontrant que la dépression de la réponse n'est pas due à un phénomène de plasticité sous-corticale ou thalamocorticale. La stimulation chronique d'une vibrisse entraîne une augmentation du nombre de synapses GABAergiques dans la couche IV du tonneau correspondant (Knott et al, 2002). Dès lors, nos résultats suggèrent qu'une augmentation de l'inhibition dans le tonneau stimulé serait à l'origine de la diminution des potentiels d'action évoqués par la vibrisse stimulée et en conséquence de l'amplitude du flux d'excitation vers les couches II&III puis vers les colonnes corticales adjacentes. Toutes les réponses des neurones du tonneau stimulé ne sont pas déprimées. Les réponses des neurones à la vibrisse voisine caudale à VP diminuent dans la couche IV (42%) et dans les couches II&III (52%) mais pas les réponses aux 7 autres vibrisses voisines. Les entrées synaptiques en provenance de la vibrisse caudale pourraient avoir été spécifiquement déprimées en raison d'une décorrélation prolongée entre l'activité évoquée dans les chemins sensoriels relatifs à la vibrisse stimulée et à la vibrisse caudale, spécificité qui découlerait du fait que, parmi les vibrisses voisines à la VP, la vibrisse caudale génère les réponses les plus fortes dans la colonne corticale. Quatre jours après l'arrêt de la stimulation, l'activité neuronale n'est plus déprimée; au contraire, nous observons une potentiation des réponses à la VP dans la couche IV de la colonne corticale stimulée. De plus, nous montrons que l'expression des protéines GLT-1 et GLAST, deux transporteurs astrocytaires du glutamate, est augmentée de ~2.5 fois dans la colonne corticale stimulée, indiquant l'existence d'une «plasticité gliale» et suggérant que les cellules gliales participent activement à l'adaptation du cerveau à l'expérience. ABSTRACT In the barrel cortex, mystacial whisker follicles are represented in the form of a topographie map. The selective removal of a set of whiskers while sparing others for several days in an adult rodent alters receptive field of barrel cortex neurons, demonstrating experience-dependent plasticity of cortical maps. Here sensory experience was altered by chronic stimulation of a whisker for a 24h period in a freely behaving adult mouse. By means of an evoked local field potential analysis, we show that chronic stimulation does not alter the flow of excitation evoked by the principal whisker (PW) in the stimulated barrel column. However, the recording of neuronal firing from a total of 1041 single units throughout the barrel cortex reveals several changes in neuronal activity. Immediately after chronic stimulation, spontaneous activity as well as PW-responses are depressed in the stimulated barrel column (mean number of spikes per PW-deflection decreases by 25% and 36% in layer IV and layers II&III, respectively). Neuronal responses towards the chronically stimulated whisker are also significantly depressed in layers II&III of the adjacent "non-stimulated" barrel' columns. The depression of both spontaneous activity and PW-responses are restricted to the stimulated ban-el column. The earliest time epoch of the PW-response in the stimulated barrel is not depressed, demonstrating that the decrease of cortical responses is not due to subcortical or thalamocortical plasticity. The depression of PW-response in the stimulated barrel correlates with an increase in the number of GABAergic synapses in layer IV (Knott et al., 2002). Therefore, our results suggest that an increase in inhibition within the stimulated barrel may reduce its excitatory output and accordingly the flow of excitation towards layers and the subsequent horizontal spread into adjacent barrel columns. Not all responses of neurons in the stimulated barrel are depressed. Neuronal responses towards the caudal in-row whisker decrease by 42% in layer IV and 52% in layers MM but responses to the other 7 immediate surround whiskers (SWs) are not affected. The synaptic inputs from the SW that elicit the strongest responses in the stimulated barrel may have been specifically depressed following a prolonged period of diminished coherence between neuronal activity evoked in the pathways from the chronically stimulated whisker and from its surrounding in-row whisker. Four days after the cessation of the stimulation, depression of neuronal activity is no longer present; on the contrary, we observe a small but significant potentiation of PW-responses in layer IV of the stimulated barrel column. Moreover we show that the expression of astrocytic glutamate transporters GLT-1 and GLAST proteins were both upregulated by ~2.5 fold in the stimulated barrel column, which indicates that glial cells exhibit experience-dependent functional changes and could actively take part in the adaptation of the cerebral cortex to experience.

La problématique des marquages corporels en tant que pratiques ancestrales s'insèrent dans des formes contemporaines d'inscription corporelle. Nous nous sommes permis d'essayer de savoir s'il s'agissait toujours d'une expression d'un malaise psychologique important ? Quelles peuvent en être les conséquences ? Pourquoi marquer le corps ? La mise en oeuvre de ce travail s'est articulée en deux phases, au départ, nous avons opéré par une pré-enquête d'envergure qui a regroupé 200 adolescents (10 filles et 190 garçons). Ensuite et dans un deuxième temps nous avons interrogé dix adolescents qui se marquent la peau dont trois garçons, âgés de quinze à dix-neuf ans. Grâce à une « tri approche » : Entretien clinique, tests du Rorschach et du TAT. Les résultats auxquels nous sommes parvenus peuvent être résumés comme suit : ces pratiques expriment une souffrance qui peine à trouver une voie d'expression symbolique autre que le corps, l'angoisse et la relation d'objet du type anaclitique, l'organisation défensive renseigneraient essentiellement sur des défenses narcissiques, centrées notamment autour du clivage et le retournement sur soi, une identité fragile marquée par une image du corps et représentation de soi fragiles et un sur (dés) investissement des limites. Il s'agit d'une emprise sur le corps et sur les marques mêmes, permettant de retrouver l'objet et le recréer. À partir des principaux résultats obtenus, nous envisageons de travailler, en filigrane sur les spécificités des types de marquages corporels existant en Algérie. En effet si le présent travail s'est étayé sur une analyse prônant la globalité, un comparatif entre les types de marquages, de même, l'établissement d'un lien entre la symbolique de certaines pratiques et les soubassements psychodynamiques qui l'entourent, serait d'un apport considérable dans la compréhension du fait étudié dans ses moindres « recoins ». -- The problem of the physical markings as ancestral practices fit into contemporary forms of physical registration. We allowed to try to know if it was always about an expression of an important psychological illness? What can be the consequences? Why to mark the body? The application of this work articulated in two phases, at first, we operated by a large-scale pre- inquiry which grouped together 200 teenagers (10 girls and 190 boys). Then and in the second time we interrogated ten teenagers who mark the skin among which three boys, from fifteen to nineteen years old. Thanks to one « sorting approaches »: clinical Interview, tests of Rorschach and TAT. The results which we reached can be summarized as follows: these practices express a suffering which has difficulty in finding a way of symbolic expression other one than the body, the fear and the relation of object of the type anaclitique, the defensive organization would inform essentially about narcissistic defences, centred notably around the cleavage and the reversal on one, a fragile identity marked by an image of the body and the representation of one fragile and one on investment of the limits. It is about an influence on the body and on the marks, allowing to find the object and to recreate it. From the main obtained results, we intend to work, between the lines on the specificities of the types of physical markings existing in Algeria. Indeed if the present work supported on an analysis lauding the global nature, a comparative degree between the types of markings, also, the establishment of a link between the symbolism of certain practices and the bases psychodynamiques who surround him, would be of a considerable contribution in the understanding of the fact studied in its slightest « hidden recesses ».
