Recent research revealed that microactuators driven by pressurized fluids are able to generate high power and force densities at microscale. One of the main technological barriers in the development of these actuators is the fabrication low friction seals. This paper presents a novel scalable seal technology, which resists the actuation pressure relying on a combination of a clearance seal and a surface tension seal. This approach allows to seal pressures of more than 800 kPa without leakage. The seal is tested on an actuator with a bore of 0.8 mm2 and a length of 13 mm, which was able to generate forces up to 0.32 N. © 2008 Springer-Verlag.

In order to improve the power density of microactuators, recent research focuses on the applicability of fluidic power at microscale. The main encountered difficulties in the development of small fluidic actuators are related to production tolerances and assembly requirements. Furthermore, these actuators tend to comprise highly three-dimensional parts, which are incompatible with traditional microproduction technologies. This paper presents accurate production and novel assembly techniques for the development of a hydraulic microactuator. In addition, a scalable low friction seal, relying on surface tension forces, is presented. A prototype piston-type microactuator with a bore of 1 mm and a length of 13 mm is developed. Using a gallium-based surface tension seal, pressures of more than 90 kPa have been sealed without leakage. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The grain boundary is an interface and the surface tension is one of its important thermodynamic properties. In this paper, the surface tension of the ∑9 grain boundary for α-Fe at various temperatures and pressures is calculated by means of Computer Molecular Dynamics (CMD). The results agree satisfactorily with the experimental data. It is shown that the contribution of entropy to surface tension of grain boundary can be ignored.

The history of Laplace's equations for spherical and cylindrical droplets and the concept of dividing surface in Gibbs' thermodynamic theory of capillary phenomena are briefly reviewed. The existing theories of surface tensions of cylindrical droplets are briefly reviewed too. For cylindrical droplets, a new method to calculate the radius and the surface tension of the surface of tension is given. This method is suitable to be used by molecular dynamics simulations.

The contact angles theta of polar liquids on PP-g-AM copolymer (AM content 0.19, 0.26, and 0.37 wt%) were measured. The critical surface tension gamma(c) of PP-g-AM films were evaluated by the Zisman plot (cos theta versus gamma(L)), the Young-Dupre-Good-Girifalco plot (1 + cos theta) versus 1/gamma(L)(0.5), and the log(1 + cos theta) versus log gamma(L) plot. The gamma(L) values estimated by the plot log(1 + cos theta) versus log gamma(L) were smaller than those obtained by the other plots.

Surface tension and density of NaCl-NaF-RE2O, melts have been measured by means of maximum buble pressure and Archimedes methods. The results are expressed by two mathematic models. Mass fraction of RE2O5 in the melts from 0.0 to 0.6% and that of NaF/NaCl, 50-90%. This investigation shows that there might be com plexes in the melts. The information obtained can be used as a reference in the preparation of Al-RE alloys.

Surface tension induced flow is implemented into a numerical modelling framework and validated for a number of test cases. Finite volume unstructured mesh techniques are used to discretize the mass, momentum and energy conservation equations in three dimensions. An explicit approach is used to include the effect of surface tension forces on the flow profile and final shape of a liquid domain. Validation of this approach is made against both analytical and experimental data. Finally, the method is used to model the wetting balance test for solder alloy material, where model predictions are used to gain a greater insight into this process. The values of material physical properties are vital for the successful use of numerical simulations for electromagnetic processing of materials. The surface tension of materials can be determined from the experimental measurement of the surface oscillation frequency of liquid droplets. In order for this technique to be used, a positioning field is required that results in a modification to the oscillation frequency. A number of previous analytical models have been developed that mainly focus on electrically conducting droplets positioned using an A.C. electromagnetic field, but due to the turbulent flow resulting from the high electromagnetic fields required to balance gravity, reliable measurements have largely been limited to microgravity. In this work axisymmetric analytical and numerical models are developed, which allow the surface tension of a diamagnetic droplet positioned in a high DC magnetic field to be determined from the surface oscillations. In the case of D.C. levitation there is no internal electric currents with resulting Joule heating, Marangoni flow and other effects that introduce additional physics that complicates the measurement process. The analytical solution uses the linearised Navier-Stokes equations in the inviscid case. The body force from a DC field is potential, in contrast to the AC case, and it can be derived from Maxwell equations giving a solution for the magnetic field in the form of a series expansion of Legendre polynomials. The first few terms in this expansion represent a constant and gradient magnetic field valid close to the origin, which can be used to position the droplet. Initially the mathematical model is verified in microgravity conditions using a numerical model developed to solve the transient electromagnetics, fluid flow and thermodynamic equations. In the numerical model (as in experiment) the magnetic field is obtained using electrical current carrying coils, which provides the confinement force for a liquid droplet. The model incorporates free surface deformation to accurately model the oscillations that result from the interaction between the droplet and the non-uniform external magnetic field. A comparison is made between the analytical perturbation theory and the numerical pseudo spectral approximation solutions for small amplitude oscillations.

Water retention and transport in soils is dependent upon the surface tension of the aqueous phase. Surfactants present in aqueous solution reduce the surface tension of aqueous phase. In soil–water systems, this can result in water drainage and reductions in field capacity and hydraulic conductivity. In this investigation, the surface tension of surfactant solutions mixed with soil—in a constant fixed ratio—was measured as a function of surfactant concentration. Two anionic surfactants were used: sodium dodecyl sulphate and sodium bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate. Two soils were also used—a clay soil and a sandy soil. The key observation made by this investigation was that the addition of soil to the surfactant solution provided a further component of surface tension reduction. Neither soil sample reduced the surface tension of water when surfactant was absent from the aqueous phase, though both soils released soil organic matter at low surfactant concentrations as shown by measurement of the chemical oxygen demand of the supernatant solutions. Furthermore, both surfactants were shown to be weakly adsorbed by soil as shown by the use of a methylene blue assay. It is therefore proposed that the additional reduction in surface tension arises from synergistic interactions between the surfactants and dissolved soil organic matter.

In this study the nature of the interaction between Tween-20 and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was investigated using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). In addition the effects of the protein and surfactant on the interfacial properties were followed with interfacial rheology and surface tension measurements in order to understand the mechanism by which the surfactant prevents protein adsorption to the air– water interface. Comparisons were made with Tween-40 and Tween-80 in order to further investigate the mechanism. ITC measurements indicated a weak, probably hydrophobic, interaction between Tween-20 and LDH. Prevention of LDH adsorption to the air–water interface by the Tween surfactants was correlated with surface energy rather than surfactant CMC. While surface pressure appears to be the main driving force for the displacement of LDH from the air–water interface by Tween-20 a solubilisation mechanism may exist for other protein molecules. More generally the results of this study highlight the value of the use of ITC and interfacial measurements in characterising the surface behaviour of mixed surfactant and protein systems.

The excess surface energy of lamellae formed by an ABA triblock copolymer melt oriented parallel to a neutral surface is evaluated using self-consistent field theory (SCFT). Consistent with experiments and previous SCFT calculations, we find a preference for the A-rich domains at the surface, which can only be attributed to the architectural asymmetry between the A and B blocks. The behavior was previously attributed to a loss of bridging configurations that occurs when the B-domain resides at the surface. Here we demonstrate that it is actually the presence of chain ends that reduces the excess surface energy of an A-rich domain relative that of a B-rich domain.

The aim of this study is to investigate flow-induced dynamic surface tension effects, similar to the well-known Marangoni phenomena, but solely generated by the nanoscale topography of the substrates. The flow-induced surface tension effects are examined on the basis of a sharp interface theory. It is demonstrated how nanoscale objects placed at the boundary of the flow domain result in the generation of substantial surface forces acting on the bulk flow.

In this paper we use molecular dynamics to answer a classical question: how does the surface tension on a liquid/gas interface appear? After defining surface tension from the first principles and performing several consistency checks, we perform a dynamic experiment with a single simple liquid nanodroplet. At time zero, we remove all molecules of the interfacial layer of molecules, creating a fresh bare interface with the bulk arrangement of molecules. After that the system evolves towards equilibrium, and the expected surface tension is re-established. We found that the system relaxation consists of three distinct stages. First, the mechanical balance is quickly re-established. During this process the notion of surface tension is meaningless. In the second stage, the surface tension equilibrates, and the density profile broadens to a value which we call “intrinsic” interfacial width. During the third stage, the density profile continues to broaden due to capillary wave excitations, which does not however affect the surface tension. We have observed this scenario for monatomic Lennard-Jones (LJ) liquid as well as for binary LJ mixtures at different temperatures, monitoring a wide range of physical observables.

We have established the surface tension relaxation time in the liquid-solid interfaces of Lennard-Jones (LJ) liquids by means of direct measurements in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The main result is that the relaxation time is found to be almost independent of the molecular structures and viscosity of the liquids (at seventy-fold change) used in our study and lies in such a range that in slow hydrodynamic motion the interfaces are expected to be at equilibrium. The implications of our results for the modelling of dynamic wetting processes and interpretation of dynamic contact angle data are discussed.
