This study investigated the 70% aqueous acetone extract of the fruits of Schisandra rubriflora which led to the isolation of eight lignans, including a new isolate, rubrisandrin C (1), and seven known lignans (2-8). The structure of 1 was established by extensive 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and its absolute stereochemistry was determined by CD spectrum. Compounds 1-5 and 7-8 were evaluated for their anti-HIV-1 activity that showed inhibitory activity on HIV-1(IIIB) induced syncytium formation with EC50 values in the range of 2.26 similar to 20.4 mu g/mL. Compounds 1 and 7 exerted their obvious protection of HIV-1(IIIB) inducted MT-4 host cells lytic effects with a selectivity index of 15.4 and 24.6, respectively.

We studied seasonal variation in the activity budget of a habituated group of Nomascus concolor jingdongensis at Mt. Wuliang, Central Yunnan, China from March 2005 to April 2006 via scan sampling at 5-min intervals. The study site is near the northern extreme of the distribution of hylobatids, at high altitude with extreme seasonality of temperature and rainfall. During the day, feeding manifested a bimodal pattern of high activity levels in mid-morning and mid-afternoon, whereas resting reached a peak at midday, with proportionally less time used for traveling. Annually, the group spent an average of 40.0% of the time resting, 35.1% feeding, 19.9% traveling, 2.6% singing, 1.2% playing, and 1.3% in other activities. The proportion of time allocated to activities showed significant monthly variations and was influenced by the diet and temperature. Gibbons increased traveling and playing time and decreased feeding time when they ate more fruit, and they decreased traveling, singing, and playing time and increased feeding time when they ate more leaves. Moreover, when the temperature was low, the gibbons decreased time traveling and increased time resting. In summary, black-crested gibbons employed high-effort activities when they ate more fruit and energy-conservation patterns when they ate more leaves and in low temperature. Behavioral data from the site are particularly useful in understanding gibbon behavioral adaptations to different sets of ecological conditions.

A goose-type lysozyme (g-lysozyme) gene has been cloned from the mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi), with its recombinant protein expressed in Escherichia coli. From the first transcription initiation site, the mandarin fish g-lysozyme gene extends 1307 nucleotides to the end of the 3' untranslated region, and it contains 5 exons and 4 introns. The open reading frame of the glysozyme transcript has 582 nucleotides which encode a 194 amino acid peptide. The 5' flanking region of mandarin fish glysozyme gene shows several common transcriptional factor binding sites when compared with that from Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). The recombinant mandarin fish g-lysozyme was expressed in E. coli by using pET-32a vector, and the purified recombinant g-lysozyme shows lytic activity against Micrococcus lysodeikticus. Rainbow trout historic H3 (RH3) promoter was cloned via high fidelity PCR. The cloned RH3 promoter was inserted into a promoter-lacked vector pEGFP-1, resulting in an expression vector pRH3FGFP-1. The linearized pRH3EGFP-1 was microinjected into fertilized eggs of rare minnows and the sequential embryogenetic processes were monitored under a fluorescent microscope. Strong green fluorescence was ubiquitously observed at as early as the gastrula stage and then in various tissues at the fry stage. The results indicate that RH3 promoter, as a piscine promoter, could serve in producing transgenic Cyprinoid such as rare minnow. Promoter activity of RH3, CMV and common carp beta-actin (CA) were compared in rare minnow by the expression of respective recombinant EGFP vectors. The expression of pCMVEGFP occurred earlier than the following one, pRH3EGFP-1, and then pCAEGFP during the embryogenesis of the transgenics. Their expression activities demonstrated that the CMV promoter is the strongest one, followed by the CA and then the RH3.

In this paper, silver-loaded TiO2 photocatalyst was prepared by photochemical impregnation method and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), photooxidation of phenol and photoreduction of Cr(VI). Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) was used to detect photoproduced paramagnetic radicals. The correlation of photocatalytic activity and photogenerated reactive species was discussed, and the mechanism of silver-loaded TiO2 for enhancement of photocatalytic activity was elucidated. The results show that deposited silver on TiO2 Surface acts as a site where electrons accumulate. The better separation between electrons and holes on the modified TiO2 surface allowed more efficiency for the oxidation and reduction reactions. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was mainly attributed to the increased amounts of O-2(.-) reactive species and surface Ti3+ reactive center on silver-loaded TiO2 photocatalyst. We firstly reported a novel polymer matrix fabricated by type I collagen and polymers, and this matrix can be used as nanoreactors for electrodepositing platinum nanoclusters (PNCs). The type I collagen film has a significant effect on the growth of PNCs. The size of the platinum nanoparticles could be readily tuned by adjusting deposition time, potential and the concentration of electrolyte, which have been verified by field-emitted scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Furthermore, cyclic voltammetry (CV) has demonstrated that the as-prepared PNCs can catalyze methanol directly with higher activity than that prepared on PSS/PDDA film, and with better tolerance to poisoning than the commercial E-TEK catalyst. The collagen-polymer matrix can be used as a general reactor to electrodeposit other metal nanostructures.

Fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) is a multifunctional polypeptide that affects many cellular functions and phenomena. The wild-type recombinant human fibroblast growth factor rhFGF-2(W) and the mutant C78SC96S rhFGF-2(M) were expressed in Escherichia coli and their products were purified. The results by the means of fluorescence spectroscopy and CD spectrums, suggested that due to its decreased hydrophobicity rhFGF-2 is not deposited as an inclusion body. The mitogenic activity of the expressed rhFGF-2(M) on 3T3 fibroblasts was shown to be 10-fold more than the expressed rhFGF-2(W) of which the biological activity was a little less than that of the standard rhbFGF(W), indicating that the increased biological activity was due to the change of its secondary structure, dimerization and affinity binding to FGF receptor (FGFR).
