Evolution of localized folding patterns in layered elastic and visco-elastic materials is reviewed in the context of compressed geological systems. The thin strut or plate embedded in a visco-elastic medium is used as an archetypal example to describe localized buckles which, in contrast to those from earlier formulations, appear in the absence of triggering imperfections. Structural and material effects are surveyed and important nonlinear characteristics are identified. A brief review of possible methods of analysis is conducted.

In this paper, we examine the postbuckling behavior of functionally graded material FGM rectangular plates that are integrated with surface-bonded piezoelectric actuators and are subjected to the combined action of uniform temperature change, in-plane forces, and constant applied actuator voltage. A Galerkin-differential quadrature iteration algorithm is proposed for solution of the non-linear partial differential governing equations. To account for the transverse shear strains, the Reddy higher-order shear deformation plate theory is employed. The bifurcation-type thermo-mechanical buckling of fully clamped plates, and the postbuckling behavior of plates with more general boundary conditions subject to various thermo-electro-mechanical loads, are discussed in detail. Parametric studies are also undertaken, and show the effects of applied actuator voltage, in-plane forces, volume fraction exponents, temperature change, and the character of boundary conditions on the buckling and postbuckling characteristics of the plates. This paper describes the buckling phenomenon of a tubular truss with unsupported length through a full-scale test and presents a practical computational method for the design of the trusses allowing for the contribution of torsional stiffness against buckling, of which the effect has never been considered previously by others. The current practice for the design of a planar truss has largely been based on the linear elastic approach which cannot allow for the contribution of torsional stiffness and tension members in a structural system against buckling. The over-simplified analytical technique is unable to provide a realistic and an economical design to a structure. In this paper the stability theory is applied to the second-order analysis and design of the structural form, with detailed allowance for the instability and second-order effects in compliance with design code requirements. Finally, the paper demonstrates the application of the proposed method to the stability design of a commonly adopted truss system used in support of glass panels in which lateral bracing members are highly undesirable for economical and aesthetic reasons.

In this work we consider the nonlinear equivalent representation form of oscillators that exhibit nonlinearities in both the elastic and the damping terms. The nonlinear damping effects are considered to be described by fractional power velocity terms which provide better predictions of the dissipative effects observed in some physical systems. It is shown that their effects on the system dynamics response are equivalent to a shift in the coefficient of the linear damping term of a Duffing oscillator. Then, its numerical integration predictions, based on its equivalent representation form given by the well-known forced, damped Duffing equation, are compared to the numerical integration values of its original equations of motion. The applicability of the proposed procedure is evaluated by studying the dynamics response of four nonlinear oscillators that arise in some engineering applications such as nanoresonators, microresonators, human wrist movements, structural engineering design, and chain dynamics of polymeric materials at high extensibility, among others

At the Institute of Structural Engineering of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Kassel University, series tests of slab-column connection were carried out, subjected to concentrated punching load. The effects of steel fiber content, concrete compressive strength, tension reinforcement ratio, size effect, and yield stress of tension reinforcement were studied by testing a total of six UHPC slabs and one normal strength concrete slab. Based on experimental results; all the tested slabs failed in punching shear as a type of failure, except the UHPC slab without steel fiber which failed due to splitting of concrete cover. The post ultimate load-deformation behavior of UHPC slabs subjected to punching load shows harmonic behavior of three stages; first, drop of load-deflection curve after reaching maximum load, second, resistance of both steel fibers and tension reinforcement, and third, pure tension reinforcement resistance. The first shear crack of UHPC slabs starts to open at a load higher than that of normal strength concrete slabs. Typically, the diameter of the punching cone for UHPC slabs on the tension surface is larger than that of NSC slabs and the location of critical shear crack is far away from the face of the column. The angle of punching cone for NSC slabs is larger than that of UHPC slabs. For UHPC slabs, the critical perimeter is proposed and located at 2.5d from the face of the column. The final shape of the punching cone is completed after the tension reinforcement starts to yield and the column stub starts to penetrate through the slab. A numerical model using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for UHPC slabs is presented. Also some variables effect on punching shear is demonstrated by a parametric study. A design equation for UHPC slabs under punching load is presented and shown to be applicable for a wide range of parametric variations; in the ranges between 40 mm to 300 mm in slab thickness, 0.1 % to 2.9 % in tension reinforcement ratio, 150 MPa to 250 MPa in compressive strength of concrete and 0.1 % to 2 % steel fiber content. The proposed design equation of UHPC slabs is modified to include HSC and NSC slabs without steel fiber, and it is checked with the test results from earlier researches.

This paper deals with the problem of stabilizing a class of structures subject to an uncertain excitation due to the temporary coupling of the main system with another uncertain dynamical subsystem. A Lyapunov function based control scheme is proposed to attenuate the structural vibration. In the control design, the actuator dynamics is taken into account. The control scheme is implemented by using only feedback information of the main system. The effectiveness of the control scheme is shown for a bridge platform with crossing vehicle

The performance of La(2-x)M(x)CuO(4) perovskites (where M = Ce, Ca or Sr) as catalysts for the water-gas shift reaction was investigated at 290 degrees C and 360 degrees C. The catalysts were characterized by EDS, XRD, N(2) adsorption-desorption, XPS and XANES. The XRD results showed that all the perovskites exhibited a single phase (the presence of perovskite structure), suggesting the incorporation of metals in the perovskite structure. The XPS and XANES results showed the presence of Cu(2+) on the surface. The perovskites that exhibited the best catalytic performance were La(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4) perovslcites, with CO conversions of 85%-90%. Moreover, these perovskites have higher surface areas and larger amounts of Cu on the surface. And Ce has a higher filled energy level than the other metals, increasing the energy of the valence band of Ce and providing more electrons for the reaction. Besides, the La(1.80)Ca(0.20)CuO(4) perovskite showed a good catalytic performance.
