The design of a switched-beam antenna formed by a circular array of monopoles housed inside a radial guide with a transition to free space is presented. Two alternative types of transitions to free space, one using a truncated conducting cone and the other created by a tapered dielectric material at the edge of the radial guide, are described. The use of the radial guide with transition increases the return-loss bandwidth of the array and enables shaping its beam in elevation. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

A new type of horn antenna for operation at 1.6 THz, that can be fabricated monolithically with 1/4-height micromachined waveguide, is described. Height, limitations imposed by the micromachining process are overcome by removing a tapered slot in the upper surface of a scalar horn, allowing the E-plane fields to extend outside the confines of the metallic structure before radiation, with a consequent reduction in E-plane beamwidth. 1.6 THz radiation pattern measurements for different designs show that, while there is scope for further optimisation, 3 dB beamwidths of 24 degrees and 17.5 degrees in the E- and H-planes, respectively, can be achieved.

The fabrication and characterization of micromachined reduced-height air-filled rectangular waveguide components suitable for integration is reported in this paper. The lithographic technique used permits structures with heights of up to 100 μm to be successfully constructed in a repeatable manner. Waveguide S-parameter measurements at frequencies between 75-110 GHz using a vector network analyzer demonstrate low loss propagation in the TE10 mode reaching 0.2 dB per wavelength. Scanning electron microscope photographs of conventional and micromachined waveguides show that the fabrication technique can provide a superior surface finish than possible with commercially available components. In order to circumvent problems in efficiently coupling free-space propagating beams to the reduced-height G-band waveguides, as well as to characterize them using quasi-optical techniques, a novel integrated micromachined slotted horn antenna has been designed and fabricated, E-, H-, and D-plane far-field antenna pattern measurements at different frequencies using a quasi-optical setup show that the fabricated structures are optimized for 180-GHz operation with an E-plane half-power beamwidth of 32° elevated 35° above the substrate, a symmetrical H-plane pattern with a half-power beamwidth of 23° and a maximum D-plane cross-polar level of -33 dB. Far-field pattern simulations using HFSS show good agreement with experimental results.

In this paper a new 22 GHz water vapor spectro-radiometer which has been specifically designed for profile measurement campaigns of the middle atmosphere is presented. The instrument is of a compact design and has a simple set up procedure. It can be operated as a standalone instrument as it maintains its own weather station and a calibration scheme that does not rely on other instruments or the use of liquid nitrogen. The optical system of MIAWARA-C combines a choked gaussian horn antenna with a parabolic mirror which reduces the size of the instrument in comparison with currently existing radiometers. For the data acquisition a correlation receiver is used together with a digital cross correlating spectrometer. The complete backend section, including the computer, is located in the same housing as the instrument. The receiver section is temperature stabilized to minimize gain fluctuations. Calibration of the instrument is achieved through a balancing scheme with the sky used as the cold load and the tropospheric properties are determined by performing regular tipping curves. Since MIAWARA-C is used in measurement campaigns it is important to be able to determine the elevation pointing in a simple manner as this is a crucial parameter in the calibration process. Here we present two different methods; scanning the sky and the Sun. Finally, we report on the first spectra and retrieved water vapor profiles acquired during the Lapbiat campaign at the Finnish Meteorological Institute Arctic Research Centre in Sodankylä, Finland. The performance of MIAWARA-C is validated here by comparison of the presented profiles against the equivalent profiles from the Microwave Limb Sounder on the EOS/Aura satellite.

Abstract This project presents a C Band Horn Antenna for a commercial communications satellite. All the different phases from Design to Verification are presented. First of all, an introduction to artificial satellites and their history is presented to put this project into perspective. Next, the electrical design of the Antenna is presented. Taking into account the theoretical fundamentals, each element that comprises this Antenna was designed. Their electrical performances, obtained from analysis using commercial software, are presented in the simulation results. In the design of each element of the antenna, some critical parameters are set and optimized in order to be compliant with the global requirements requested by the customer. After the design is completed, it is necessary to define the Test Campaign that has to be carried out in order to verify the validity of the designed and manufactured Antenna. Therefore, a Test Plan and the Electrical and Environmental Test Procedures are defined. This Test Campaign must be representative of the same conditions of the real space mission. Considering this, the following are defined: parameters for the network analyzer and radiation patterns measurements; test levels for the environmental test; definition of the RF measurements to be carried out and the temperatures to be applied in the thermal vacuum cycling. If the Antenna surpasses these tests, it will be ready to perform its mission in space over the entire satellite’s life cycle. The facilities where the tests are performed, as well as the sequence of the tests along the campaign are described too. After that, the Test Campaign is performed to fully characterize the Antenna in the space simulated conditions. Following the order established in the Test Plan, a radiation pattern and laboratory parameters are measured to correlate its electrical response with the simulations. Then, vibration and thermal vacuum tests are performed to verify its behavior in extreme environmental conditions. Last, if the final electrical results are the same as the initial ones, it can be stated that the antenna has successfully passed the Test Campaign. And finally, conclusions obtained from the data simulation design and Test Campaign results are presented. Status of Compliance with the specification is shown to demonstrate that the Antenna fulfills the requested requirements. Although the purpose of this project is to design and verify the response of C Band Horn Antenna, it is important to highlight improvements for future developments and the lessons learnt during this project.

ABSTRACT. Waveguide transitions are structures used in microwave in order to transfer and adapt the signal that travels from a certain transmission system (e.g. coaxial cable) to other transmission system or to a radiant system (e.g. horn antenna). Both transmission systems between which the transition adapts the signal can be different or from the same type, but with differences in some of their dimensions. There are different waveguide transitions that, depending on their utility, are designed and constructed in different sections: circular, rectangular, elliptic or combinations of the former. The section of the guide does not have to have a known geometric shape, although the standards to be followed in this thesis apply to rectangular and circular sections. In the work here presented, we aim to optimize by means of parametric simulations, a transition between a coaxial cable with a K-type connector and a waveguide with circular section following the standard presented by Flann, Millitech y Antarfs for the band WR34. The transition studied is called tapered transition, which is characterized by the progressive variation of its dimensions, until reaching the defined size of the corresponding standard. The way of optimizing the transition will be based in the study of the parameter S11 presented by the structure along the bandwidth. Since the standard used is the WR34, the bandwidth can be defined from 21.7 up to 33 GHz. It is aimed that the response of the S11 parameter be lower equal than -20dB in the frequency band under study according to the design in order to be well matched. Finally, a criterion to follow is proposed in order to optimize these transitions type, following the better-match objective. That will be done taking into account the impact of each section on the frequency range in which influences and the final characteristics of the studied transition will be presented. In this document, it is briefly introduced the utility of quarter-wave impedance transformers in transmission lines, the state-of-art of the different techniques for their design, and the proposal of design and characterization aimed with this work. Afterwards, the study case for the design of the transition to be integrated with a choke horn antenna will be presented. Later, the theoretical frame work is introduced, giving some illustrative examples of rectangular and circular waveguide sections, and also introducing λ/4 adaptors in the simulations. Subsequently, the implementation of the model under study in CST (Computer Simulation Technology) Studio Suite will be explained. Finally, the discussion of the results, conclusion and future lines of the work are presented.

Investigations on the design and development of certain new hollow dielectric hom antennas of rectangular cross section have been carried out. The main shortcoming of the existing ordinary hollow dielectric hom antenna (HDH) is the abrupt discontinuity at the feed-end. A new launching technique using a dielectric rod is introduced to overcome this limitation. Also a strip loading technique is employed for further modification of the antenna. Radiation parameters of new I-IDH antennas of Eplane sectoral, H-plane sectoral and pyramidal types were studied and are found to be very attractive. Theoretical approach based on Marcatili’s principle and two aperture theory along with diffraction theory and image theory is used to support the experimental findings. The HDH is considered as solid horn of effective dielectric constant and the aperture field is evaluated. The antenna is excited by the open waveguide in the dominant TE1o mode and so the existence of any hybrid mode is mled-out. The theoretical results are observed to be in good agreement with the experimental results.
