Historic aspects of human susceptibility to leprosy and the risk of conjugal transmission

Estimates of genetic susceptibility to leprosy were made in the past from observational reports in familial settings using descriptive epidemiologic data. Risk of conjugal transmission of leprosy (from one spouse to another) has been estimated between 1-10% and is thought to occur in 3-5% of spouses exposed to untreated lepromatous disease in the partner. Risk of secondary transmission is presumed higher in other family members than for the conjugal partner. This belief has become dogma to many leprologists who may no longer know the basis for this estimation. This article reviews the historic epidemiologic descriptions of risk for leprosy transmission in married couples compared to other family members. Although uncommon, conjugal leprosy occurs and at higher rates in populations with traditional familial intermarriage and consanguinity.

The fecundity of queens of Iridomyrmex humilis (Mayr) as mesaured by an oviposition test in isolation was correlated with their weight, The relative attractiveness of queens to workers was not correlated with either their weight or fecundity. Comparison of these results with those on other ant species show that queens of I. humilis have a relatively low level of attractiveness. This low attractiveness may result from the high number of queens per nest in I .humilis. This hypothesis is supported by the comparison of the attractiveness of queens in experimental monogynous and polygynous colonies which showed that queens in monogynous colonies have a higher attractiveness to workers. As a consequence of their higher attractiveness, queens in monogynous colonies probably receive more food. This may partially explain the higher weight and fecundity of queens in monogynous colonies. Reflexões sobre o cuidar de mulheres que sofrem violência conjugal em uma perspectiva heideggeriana do mundo da técnica

Trata-se de um texto reflexivo que aborda a questão do cuidado a mulheres que sofrem violência conjugal em uma perspectiva analítica do mundo da técnica, desenvolvido a partir de concepções e conceitos de Martin Heidegger, filósofo contemporâneo da fenomenologia. O cuidar de mulheres em situação de violência conjugal surge como envolvendo valores, decisão, confiança para cuidar, conhecimento e ações de cuidado e suas conseqüências.

Violência conjugal: vivências expressas em discursos masculinos

Tendo como objeto a vivência de violência na relação conjugal, este estudo descritivo, de abordagem quali-quantitativa, teve como objetivo identificar a violência conjugal no discurso masculino. A população foi composta por 50 homens residentes na comunidade do Calafate, em San Martin, bairro localizado em Salvador/Ba. Para coleta de dados, utilizou-se entrevista com formulário semi-estruturado. A amostra caracterizou-se por homens, na faixa etária entre 20 a 40 anos (74,0%); convivendo conjugalmente (98,0%). Com relação à violência conjugal, o índice encontrado foi de 80%. Quanto às formas de violência, destacam-se a violência emocional e a violência física.

Norme d'internalité et unités d'analyse : Pour une redéfinition du statut de la mesure dans l'étude des normes sociales de jugement

Cet article fait suite à deux articles parus récemment dans la Revue Internationale de Psychologie Sociale traitant de la norme d'internalité et de sa mesure (Beauvois & Dubois, 2009a; Delmas, 2009). Dans un premier temps, nous discutons des confusions et glissements entre deux courants perçus bien souvent comme proches: l'approche du Locus of control et la théorie de la norme d'internalité. Nous pointons ensuite quelques difficultés méthodologiques qui ont alimenté ces confusions. Enfin, nous proposons de prendre en compte ces difficultés en redéfinissant le statut de la mesure en fonction d'une unité d'analyse plus adaptée pour l'étude de la norme d'internalité: les explications causales et non les individus. Ce changement d'unités d'analyse nous amènera à proposer une méthode plus adaptée pour l'étude de la normativité des explications causales : l'échantillonnage aléatoire des items composant ces questionnaires.

From Support to Control : A Configurational Perspective on Conjugal Quality

The topic of conjugal quality provides an empirical illustration of the relevance of the configurational perspective on families. Based on a longitudinal sample of 1,534 couples living in Switzerland drawn from the study "Social Stratification, Cohesion and Conflict in Contemporary Families", we show that various types of interdependencies with relatives and friends promote distinct conflict management strategies for couples as well as unequal levels of conjugal quality. We find that configurations characterized by supportive and non-interfering relationships with relatives and friends for both partners are associated with higher conjugal quality, while configurations characterized by interference are associated with lower conjugal quality.
