There have been extensive experimental observations of changes in the apparent rate controlling creep parameters in studies on superplastic materials. The three most common explanations associated with these changes in the stress exponent, n, the activation energy Q and the inverse grain size exponent, p involve the effect of concurrent grain growth, the operation of a threshold stress or transitions in creep mechanisms. Each of these factors may influence experimental creep data in a similar manner. Therefore, a careful analysis of the consequences of all three factors must involve the development of a consistent set of experimental observations in order to adequately distinguish the effects of each. This paper discusses the role of concurrent grain growth, a threshold stress and transitions in creep mechanisms in superplastic materials. Specific attention is given to the analysis of data on superplastic yttria-stabilized zirconia ceramics for which an increase in n has been observed at low applied stresses. It is demonstrated that neither concurrent grain growth nor a threshold stress can account for all the relevant experimental observations in this material. It is concluded that the changes in rate controlling creep parameters are associated with the operation of two distinct sequential mechanisms as part of a grain boundary sliding process.

Porous yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) has been regarded as a potential candidate for bone substitute due to its high mechanical strength. However, porous YSZ is biologically inert to bone tissue. It is therefore necessary to introduce bioactive coatings onto the walls of the porous structures to enhance its bioactivity. In this study, porous YSZ scaffolds were prepared using a replication technique and then coated with mesoporous bioglass due to its excellent bioactivity. The microstructures were examined using scanning electron microscopy and the mechanical strength was evaluated via compression test. The biocompatibility and bioactivity were also evaluated using bone marrow stromal cell (BMSC) proliferation test and simulated body fluid test.

Porous yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) has been regarded as a potential candidate for bone substitute as its high mechanical strength. However, porous YSZ bodies are biologically inert to bone tissue. It is therefore necessary to introduce bioactive coatings onto the walls of the porous structures to enhance the bioactivity. In this study, the porous zirconia scaffolds were prepared by infiltration of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) scaffolds with 3 mol% yttria stabilized zirconia slurry. After sintering, a method of sol-gel dip coating was involved to make coating layer of mesoporous bioglass (MBGs). The porous zirconia without the coating had high porosities of 60.1% to 63.8%, and most macropores were interconnected with pore sizes of 0.5-0.8mm. The porous zirconia had compressive strengths of 9.07-9.90MPa. Moreover, the average coating thickness was about 7μm. There is no significant change of compressive strength for the porous zirconia with mesoporous biogalss coating. The bone marrow stromal cell (BMSC) proliferation test showed both uncoated and coated zirconia scaffolds have good biocompatibility. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrographs and the compositional analysis graphs demonstrated that after testing in the simulated body fluid (SBF) for 7 days, the apatite formation occurred on the coating surface. Thus, porous zirconia-based ceramics were modified with bioactive coating of mesoporous bioglass for potential biomedical applications.

For the filling and reconstruction of non-healing bone defects, the application of porous ceramic scaffold as bone substitutes is considered to be a reasonable choice. In bone tissue engineering, an ideal scaffold must satisfy several criterias such as open porosity, having high compressive strength (it depends where in body, and if external fixatures are used) and the practicability for cell migration. Many researchers have focused on enhancing the mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite scaffolds by combining it with other biomaterials, such as bioglass and polymers. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of suitable scaffolds based on porous biomaterials. In this study, zirconia scaffolds from two different templates (polyurethane (PU) and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) templates) were successfully fabricated with dissimilar fabrication techniques. The scaffold surfaces were further modified with mesoporous bioglass for the purpose of bone tissue engineering. In the study of PU template scaffold, high porosity (~88%) sol-gel derived yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) scaffold was prepared by a polyurethane (PU) foam replica method using sol-gel derived zirconia for the first time, and double coated with Mesoporous Bioglass (MBGs) coating. For the ABS template scaffold, two types of templates (cube and cylinder) with different strut spacings were used and fabricated by a 3D Rapid Prototyper. Subsequently, zirconia scaffolds with low porosity (63±2.8% to 68±2.5%) were fabricated by embedding the zirconia powder slurry into the ABS templates and burning out the ABS to produce a uniform porous structure. The zirconia scaffolds were double coated with mesoporous bioglass by dip coating for the first time. The porosities of the scaffolds were calculated before and after coating. The microstructures were then examined using scanning electron microscopy and the mechanical properties were evaluated using compressive test. Accordingly, relationships between microstructure, processing and mechanical behaviour of the porous zirconia was discussed. Scaffold biocompatibility and bioactivity was also evaluated using a bone marrow stromal cell (BMSC) proliferation test and a simulated body fluid test.

Transformation toughening ceramics (TTCs) are engineering materials which combine ceramic properties such as hardness, corrosion resistance and low thermal conductivity with good toughness and mechanical strength. At elevated temperatures their use is limited due to destabilisation of the transformation toughening microstructure (partially stabilised zirconia or PSZ) or creep and hydrothermal degradation (tetragonal zirconia polycrystals or TZPs). Despite these limitations, the use of TTCs, particularly zirconia based, has become widespread. To date, most commercial TTCs are based on combinations of zirconia and one stabilising oxide. This work investigates a zirconia ceramic containing two stabilisers, namely yttria and titania in roughly equal proportions.

Objectives. To test the hypothesis that multiple firing and silica deposition on the zirconia surface influence the bond strength to porcelain.Materials and methods. Specimens were cut from yttria-stabilized zirconia blocks and sintered. Half of the specimens (group S) were silica coated (physical vapor deposition (PVD)) via reactive magnetron sputtering before porcelain veneering. The remaining specimens (group N) had no treatment before veneering. The contact angle before and after silica deposition was measured. Porcelain was applied on all specimens and submitted to two (N2 and S2) or three firing cycles (N3 and S3). The resulting porcelain-zirconia blocks were sectioned to obtain bar-shaped specimens with 1 mm(2) of cross-sectional area. Specimens were attached to a universal testing machine and tested in tension until fracture. Fractured surfaces were examined using optical microscopy. Data were statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVA, Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05) and Weibull analysis.Results. Specimens submitted to three firing cycles (N3 and S3) showed higher mean bond strength values than specimens fired twice (N2 and S2). Mean contact angle was lower for specimens with silica layer, but it had no effect on bond strength. Most fractures initiated at porcelain-zirconia interface and propagated through the porcelain.Significance. The molecular deposition of silica on the zirconia surface had no influence on bond strength to porcelain, while the number of porcelain firing cycles significantly affected the bond strength of the ceramic system, partially accepting the study hypothesis. Yet, the Weibull modulus values of S groups were significantly greater than the m values of N groups. (C) 2012 Academy of Dental Materials. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Composites containing a matrix of nanometric Ce-stabilized zirconia with an addition of micrometric monoclinic zirconia were processed by slip casting and sintered at a relatively low temperature. The ratio between nanometric and micrometric particles was determined according to the viscosity of the suspensions and the final density of the pellets. An optimum amount of micrometric particles was necessary to achieve improved suspension dispersion and higher pellet density. The amount of deflocculant in the suspensions containing the mixture of micrometric and nanometric particles was optimized by viscosity measurements. The pellets were characterized by dilatometry, Hg porosimetry, density measurement (the Archimedes method) and scanning electron microscopy. Despite the low green density obtained (35-38% of the theoretical density), densities as high as 97.5% were achieved after sintering. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd and Techna S.r.l. Using the Rietveld method, phases of ceria-doped zirconia, calcined at temperatures of 600 and 900 degrees C, were quantitatively analysed for different concentrations of ceria. The results show that the stabilization of zirconia depends on the dopant concentration and calcination temperature. Moreover, the theoretical calculation using the ab initio Hartree-Fock-Roothaan method indicates that the most stable phases for ceria-stabilized zirconia are cubic or tetragonal, in accordance with experimental results. Purpose: To evaluate the influence of the geometry and design of prosthetic crown preparations on stress distribution in compression tests, using finite element analysis (FEA). Materials and Methods: Six combinations of 3D drawings of all-ceramic crowns (yttria-stabilized zirconia framework and porcelain veneer) were evaluated: F, flat preparation and simplified crown; FC, flat preparation and crown with contact point; FCM, flat preparation and modified crown; A, anatomical preparation and simplified anatomical crown framework; AC, anatomical preparation and crown with contact point; and ACM, anatomical preparation and modified crown. Bonded contact types at all interfaces with the mesh were assigned, and the material properties used were according to the literature. A 200 N vertical load was applied at the center of each model. The maximum principal stresses were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed. Results: The highest values of tensile stress were observed at the interface between the ceramics in the region under the load application for the simplified models (F and A). Reductions in stress values were observed for the model with the anatomical preparation and modified infrastructure (ACM). The stress distribution in the flat models was similar to that of their respective anatomical models. Conclusions: The modified design of the zirconia coping reduces the stress concentration at the interface with the veneer ceramic, and the simplified preparation can exert a stress distribution similar to that of the anatomical preparation at and near the load point, when load is applied to the center of the crown.

In the presence of nonionic block-copolymer surfactant, nanocrystalline zirconia particles with MSU mesostrucmre were synthesized by a novel solid-state reaction route. The zirconia particles possess a nanocrystalline pore wall, which renders higher thermal stability compared to an amorphous framework. To further enhance its stability, laponite, a synthetic clay, was introduced. Laponite acts as an inhibitor to crystal a growth and also as a hard template for the mesostructure. High surface area and ordered pore structure were observed in the stabilized zirconia. The results show that the formation of the MSU structure is attributed to reverse hexagonal micelles, which are the products of the cooperative self-assembly of organic and inorganic species in the solid-state synthesis system with crystalline water and hygroscopic water present.
