Impact of social constructs on administrator understanding of social justice

Educational administrators are expected to relate social justice considerations to their actions and to the theoretical foundations of their practice. At the same time, social constructs-including those related to administrative practice, social justice, and societal norms-are important in helping administrators understand, frame, and describe administrative issues. Furthermore, as part of socially constructed language, these constructs represent discursive practices and accepted ways of knowing, valuing, and experiencing the world. Drawing on the multidimensional methods of critical discourse analysis as articulated in the writings of Michel Foucault, Norman Fairclough, and Allan Luke, and using deconstruction as a strategic device for reading and interpreting texts, this exploratory qualitative study examined how administrator knowledge, values, and experiences impact their understanding of social justice within the context of delivering social justice for students who experience bullying. Study findings reveal that school administrators interpreted social justice as equitable distribution, action, and results; fairness; and equity. Constructs embedded in these interpretations assumed common things such as universal acceptance of norms of social relations and conveyed administrator intent to secure the kind of social relations that enabled individuals to enjoy greater equality within existing social arrangements.

An Ardent Flame: Witness to Distant Suffering, Human Rights and Unworthy Victims in the Coverage by The New York Times and Two Journals of the Religious Left of the 1980s Civil Wars in El Salvador and Nicaragua

Scholars have investigated witness to distant suffering (WTDS) almost entirely in visual media. This study examines it in print. This form of reporting will be examined in two publications of the religious left as contrasted with the New York Times. The thesis is that, more than any technology, WTDS consists of the journalist’s moral commitment and narrative skills and the audience’s analytical resources and trust. In the religious journals, liberation theology provides the moral commitment, the writers and editors the narrative skills and trust and the special vision of the newly empowered poor the analytical foundation. In bearing witness to those who have suffered state or guerilla terrorism in El Salvador and Nicaragua during the 1980s, we will investigate a distinction between “worthy” and “unworthy victims.” This last issue has a special ethical and political significance. Media witnessing to the suffering of strangers can help them become known, and so “worthy.” It can help them, and their plight and cause, become better recognized. This is the power of the media.

La deconstrucción ética y moral en la formación del futuro docente con Especialidad en Primero y Segundo Ciclo de Educación Básica, Parvularia y Matemática; de la Zona Oriental de El Salvador

Se investigó el/los problemas que impiden una constante práctica deconstructiva de la ética y la moral en el perfil docente ideal con Especialidad en Primero y Segundo Ciclo de Educación Básica, Parvularia y Matemática; de la Zona Oriental de El Salvador. Se escudriño sobre las falencias que impiden la práctica pedagógica deconstructiva en los futuros docentes de la Zona Oriental de El Salvador, indagando las causas que impiden un constante replanteamiento de la práctica pedagógica profesional. Asimismo, se propuso un programa de enseñanza práctica sobre los valores éticos y morales que conduzcan a la deconstrucción del perfil docente desde su formación universitaria. El tipo de investigación que se llevó a cabo es de tipo bibliográfica, descriptiva y de campo; lo que permitió recolectar la información necesaria y adecuada, que dio solides a los aportes que se ofrecen como un medio útil en la búsqueda de estar construyendo día a día el docente desde un perfil claro y definido. Se concluye que Hay factores que impiden una constante práctica deconstructiva de la ética y la moral en el perfil del docente ideal como son: el acomodamiento, la irresponsabilidad, el autoritarismo, prácticas tradicionalistas, indisciplina, falta de empatía, clima institucional, etc. A demás, la investigación confirma que algunos centros de formación superior salvadoreña no están fomentando incisivamente los valores éticos y morales en los/as estudiantes, solamente se están quedando en un desarrollo puramente abstracto, olvidando o dejando de lado, que es la práctica la que crea una identidad y una personalidad éticamente y moralmente no manipulable. Por ende, se descubre que no se está dando la importancia debida a dicha temática sobre la formación en valores éticos y morales, y que no basta solo con un abordaje transversal, para formar al ser bio-psico-social-cultural-histórico que desea el MINED.

Establishment of a new genus for Parastenocaris itica (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) from El Salvador, Central America, with discussion of the Parastenocaris fontinalis and P. proserpina groups

A new genus of Parastenocarididae is described from the Neotropical region. Iticocaris gen. nov. is established to include Parastenocaris itica Noodt, 1962. Iticocaris gen. nov. is defined by the following characters: 1) male leg 3 with 2-segmented exopod; 2) first exopodal segment short and rectangular; 3) thumb hypertrophic, longer than the second exopodal segment and inserted on the distal edge of exopod segment 1, occupying the whole distal margin; 4) exopod 2 or apophysis strongly sclerotized, articulated with the exopod segment 1 on its inner margin and curved against the thumb, forming a strong forceps; 5) leg 4 endopod without dimorphism in shape and size vs. minor dimorphism in ornamentation; 6) leg 5 with three setae and 7) lack of the anterolateral furcal seta II. The new genus is monotypic, represented by Iticocaris itica (Noodt, 1962) comb. nov., from El Salvador, Central America. A close relationship is hypothesized between I. itica and the genus Brasilibathynellocaris Jakobi, 1972, the males of which both share the forceps-like elongated apophysis.
