Interaction of a stream of high-energy electrons with the background plasma plays an important role in the astrophysical phenomena such as interplanetary and stellar bow shock and Earth's foreshock emission. It is not yet fully understood how electrostatic solitary waves are produced at the bow shock. Interestingly, a population of energetic suprathermal electrons were also found to exist in those environments. Previously, we have studied the properties of negative electrostatic potential solitary structures exist in such a plasma with excess suprathermal electrons. In the present study, we investigate the existence conditions and propagation properties of electron-acoustic solitary waves in a plasma consisting of an electron beam fluid, a cold electron fluid, and hot suprathermal electrons modeled by a kappa-distribution function. The Sagdeev pseudopotential method was used to investigate the occurrence of stationary-profile solitary waves. We have determined how the electron-acoustic soliton characteristics depend on the electron beam parameters. It is found that the existence domain for solitons becomes narrower with an increase in the suprathermality of hot electrons, increasing the beam speed, decreasing the beam-to-cold electron population ratio. These results lead to a better understanding of the formation of electron-acoustic solitary waves observed in those space plasma systems characterized by kappa-distributed electrons and inertial drifting (beam) electrons.

We consider bipartitions of one-dimensional extended systems whose probability distribution functions describe stationary states of stochastic models. We define estimators of the information shared between the two subsystems. If the correlation length is finite, the estimators stay finite for large system sizes. If the correlation length diverges, so do the estimators. The definition of the estimators is inspired by information theory. We look at several models and compare the behaviors of the estimators in the finite-size scaling limit. Analytical and numerical methods as well as Monte Carlo simulations are used. We show how the finite-size scaling functions change for various phase transitions, including the case where one has conformal invariance.

Classical models of gravity gradient, solar radiation, aerodynamic and magnetic torques acting on a circular cylinder satellite. The magnitude of each such are compared with parameterization in terms of the dimensions of the satellite and its altitude in relation to the Earth's surface. Two different satellite data are considered. The results agree with the classical results and show that for altitude between 0 and 800 km the gravity gradient, aerodynamic and magnetic torques decrease with altitude while the solar radiation torque is almost independent of the altitude. The relative importance of these torques depends on the size, mass, moments of inertia and altitude of the satellite. The results can be useful to propagate the satellite attitude, to satellite missions analysis and to validate the analytical approaches. (C) 2003 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier B.V. Ltd. A first order analytical model for optimal small amplitude attitude maneuvers of spacecraft with cylindrical symmetry in an elliptical orbits is presented. The optimization problem is formulated as a Mayer problem with the control torques provided by a power limited propulsion system. The state is defined by Seffet-Andoyer's variables and the control by the components of the propulsive torques. The Pontryagin Maximum Principle is applied to the problem and the optimal torques are given explicitly in Serret-Andoyer's variables and their adjoints. For small amplitude attitude maneuvers, the optimal Hamiltonian function is linearized around a reference attitude. A complete first order analytical solution is obtained by simple quadrature and is expressed through a linear algebraic system involving the initial values of the adjoint variables. A numerical solution is obtained by taking the Euler angles formulation of the problem, solving the two-point boundary problem through the shooting method, and, then, determining the Serret-Andoyer variables through Serret-Andoyer transformation. Numerical results show that the first order solution provides a good approximation to the optimal control law and also that is possible to establish an optimal control law for the artificial satellite's attitude. Artificial satellites around the Earth can be temporarily captured by the Moon via gravitational mechanisms., How long the capture remains depends on the phase space region where the trajectory is located. This interval of time (capture time) ranges from less than one day (a single passage), up to 500 days, or even more. Orbits of longer times might be very useful for certain types of missions. The advantage of the ballistic capture is to save fuel consumption in an orbit transference from around the Earth to around the Moon. Some of the impulse needed in the transference is saved by the use of the gravitational forces involved. However, the time needed for the transference is elongated from days to months. In the present work we have mapped a significant part of the phase space of the Earth-Moon system, determining the length of the capture times and the origin of the trajectory, if it comes from the Earth direction, or from the opposite direction. Using such map we present a set of missions considering the utilization of the long capture times. (C) 2003 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

Forecasting, for obvious reasons, often become the most important goal to be achieved. For spatially extended systems (e.g. atmospheric system) where the local nonlinearities lead to the most unpredictable chaotic evolution, it is highly desirable to have a simple diagnostic tool to identify regions of predictable behaviour. In this paper, we discuss the use of the bred vector (BV) dimension, a recently introduced statistics, to identify the regimes where a finite time forecast is feasible. Using the tools from dynamical systems theory and Bayesian modelling, we show the finite time predictability in two-dimensional coupled map lattices in the regions of low BV dimension. © Indian Academy of Sciences.

Tethered bilayer lipid membranes provide an efficient, stable and versatile platform for the investigation of integrated membrane proteins. However, the incorporation of large proteins, as well as of proteins with a large submembrane part is still a very critical issue and therefore, further optimisation of the system is necessary. The central element of a tBLM is a lipid bilayer. Its proximal leaflet is, at least to some extend, covalently attached to a solid support via a spacer group. The anchor lipid consists of three distinct parts, a lipid headgroup, a spacer group and an anchor. All parts together influence the final bilayer properties. In the frame of this work, the synthesis of new thiolipids for tBLMs on gold has been investigated. The aim was to obtain molecules with longer spacers in order to increase the submembrane space. The systems obtained have been characterized using SPR and EIS. The results obtained during this study are multiple. First, the synthesis of a previously synthesized architecture was successfully scaled up in an industrial lab using a new synthetic approach. The synthesis of large amounts is now feasible. Then, the synthesis of the new thiolipids was carried out taking into account the following requirements: the increase of the submembrane space by having longer ethyleneglycol spacers, the attachment of the molecules to a gold substrate via a thiol bond, and the tunability of the lateral mobility by changing the lipid headgroup. Three different synthetic strategies have been investigated. The polymeric approach did not prove to be successful, merely because of the broad molecular weight distribution. The synthesis of heterofunctionally protected oligoethyleneglycols allowed to obtain ethyleneglycol moieties with 6 and 8 units, but the tedious purification steps gave very low yields. Finally, the block by block synthesis using ethyleneglycol precursors proved to be an efficient and fast method to synthesize the target molecules. Indeed, these were obtained with very high yields, and the separation was very efficient. A whole family of new compounds was obtained, having 6, 8 and 14 ethyleneglycol units and with mono- or diphytanyl lipid headgroups. This new pathway is a very promising synthetic strategy that can be used further in the development of new compounds of the tether system. The formation of bilayers was investigated for the different thiolipids mainly by using EIS. The electrical properties of a bilayer define the quality of the membrane and allow the study of the functionality of proteins embedded in such a system. Despite multiple trials to improve the system using self assembly, Langmuir Blodgett transfer, and detergent mixed vesicles, the new polymer thiolipids did not show as high electrical properties as tBLMs reported in the literature. Nevertheless, it was possible to show that a bilayer could be obtained for the different spacer lengths. These bilayers could be formed using self assembly for the first monolayer, and two different methods for bilayer formation, namely vesicle fusion and solvent exchange. We could furthermore show functional incorporation of the ion carrier valinomycin: the selective transport of K+ ions could be demonstrated. For DPHL, it was even possible to show the functional incorporation of the ion channel gramicidin. The influence of the spacer length is translated into an increase of the spacer capacitance, which could correspond to an increase in the capacity of charge accumulation in the submembrane space. The different systems need to be further optimised to improve the electrical properties of the bilayer. Moreover, the incorporation of larger proteins, and proteins bearing submembrane parts needs to be investigated.

Studies of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have shown that the overall size, periphery, and functionalization of PAHs are crucial parameters which significantly alter their electronic structure and chemical reactivity. Therefore, the major direction of this thesis is the synthesis and characterization of extended PAHs: (i) with different functional groups improving their processability, (ii) with different periphery changing their chemical reactivity, (iii) with inclusions of different metal ions, which influence their physical properties. • The cyclodehydrogenation reaction has been proposed for to synthesise polyphenylene ribbons with preplanarized (dibenzo[e,l]pyrene) moieties in the aromatic core with up to 10 nm linear size. The synthetic strategy employed is discussed in Chapter 2 and is based on stoichiometrically controlled DIELS-ALDER cycloaddition. All molecules possessed very good solubility in common organic solvents allowing their characterization by standard analytical techniques. • A new concept was developed to extend PAH’s core. Here the introduction of “zigzag” sites, discussed in Chpater 3 was shown to lower the HOMO-LUMO gap and to result in higher chemical reactivities. This allowed, in Chapters 3, 4 and 5, further functionalization of PAH and enlargement of their aromatic cores up to 224 atoms. Despite the size of these novel molecules, extraordinary solubilities in common organic solvents were obtained due to distortions from planarity of the aromatic cores by bulky tert-butyl groups, which hampered the usually very pronounced aggregation tendency of extended π-systems. All extended PAHs posses the small HOMO-LUMO gap together with good electron affinities making them potential candidates for application in organic FETs. • Another alternative synthetic route has been proposed to obtain extended the metal-PAH complexes. Using the quinoxaline methodology in Chapter 5 three new phenanthroline ligands (up to 60 skeletal atoms) have been synthesized and characterized. Four different (Ru(II), Cu(II) and Pt(II)) complexes were synthesized, allowing to construct a range of large metal complexes by varying the metal as well as the number and nature of ligands.

The present thesis work was performed in the frame of ESEO (European Student Earth Orbiter) project. The activities that are described in this document were carried out in the Microsatellites and Space Micro systems Lab led by Professor Paolo Tortora and in ALMASpace company facilities. The thesis deals with ESEO structural analysis, at system and unit level, and verification: after determining the design limit loads to be applied to the spacecraft as an envelope of different launchers load profiles, a finite element structural analysis was performed on the model of the satellite in order to ensure the capability to withstand the loads encountered during the launch; all the analyses were performed according to ESA standards and using the software MSC NASTRAN SIMXPERT. Amplification factors were derived and used to determine loads to be considered at unit level. In particular structural analyses were carried out on the GPS unit, the payload developed for ESEO by students of University of Bologna and results were used in the preparation of GPS payload design definition file. As for the verification phase a study on the panels and inserts to be used in the spacecraft was performed: different designs were created exploiting methods to optimize weight and mechanical behavior. The configurations have been analyzed and results compared to select the final design.
