This project originated from both investigation of the musicalisation of theatre and impact of gender upon contemporary physical comedy. Developed as a ‘music first’ proposition, the initial experiment was to blend music and theatre so they were indistinguishable. Musicalising theatre, and theatricalising music. This established a covert intermediality with the potential to work in theatre or music venues. An iterative cycle of writing, performance, and videography over two years in venues ranging from small cafes to Woodford Folk Festival resulted in a full-length performance premiering at Brisbane Powerhouse’s Queensland Cabaret Festival 2015. The soundtrack to the show was recorded as a full-length album at QUT’s Gasworks Studio and released in 2014. It’s become clear that male/female musical comedy acts are an extremely rare pairing. Certain preconceptions about gender and comedy complicate the field; indeed the comic tropes of the double act which the Warmwaters flow around and through. Brian Logan (2011) even poses that “the male-female dynamic militate[s] against comedy”. This performance-led research draws on Comedy Studies to examine three classic formulations of the comic duo as they are manifested at critical incidents in the Warmwaters’ show. These moments are examined in terms of comic functionality and gender, evaluating and potentially reformulating them, whilst working towards a better understanding of the relative scarcity of the male/female musical comedy duo. Prototypes have been performed in various venues, utilising performance as research: cycles in which discoveries made during unpredictable gigs in music venues are captured on video, transcribed, rewritten, then fed back into live performance.

Reflecting on Gus Van Sant’s films Gerry (2003) Elephant (2004) and Last Days (2005), the director’s long-term sound-designer Leslie Shatz observed that “You have to get into the totality of the experience and not just the dialogue”. Shatz’s comment expresses something fundamental about the experimental approach to cinema and to soundscapes undertaken by Van Sant in these three films, unofficially known as the “Death Trilogy”. This thesis contends that Van Sant makes deliberate aesthetic choices which do indicate a distinctly “auteurist” leaning. However, I also argue that intertextual elements, prior knowledge, and audience participation in meaningmaking enhance the experience of, and reveal the nuances in, the soundtracks themselves. This thesis aims to contribute to a growing body of work within filmmusic scholarship concerned with resisting a traditional bias in the field: that film music should be understood as a means of characterisation and as emotional signifier. The films of the “Death Quartet”, which includes Paranoid Park (2007), I believe, offer fertile ground on which to explore these new approaches. It is my contention that these films deconstruct the traditional approach to soundtracking and the relationship between soundtrack and character, and that only an approach sensitive to the aesthetic and philosophical functions of music and sound can adequately acknowledge their unique cinematic qualities.

A 16mm moving image work and expanded cinema performance co-commissioned by Tate Modern and Arnolfini. Shot at the post-production facilities of Pinewood studios, London, the close-up sequences feature abstract patterns of optical sound encoded as light, printed onto the soundtrack area of the filmstrip. The film features the quivering light of a 16mm mono and a 35mm stereo optical sound camera, providing a seismic glimpse at a sound-wave in formation, on occasions flashing like a stroboscopic Rorschach inkblot. Between the Bullet and the Hole is a film centred on the elusive and complex effects of war on women's role in ballistic research and early computing. The film features new and archival high-speed bullet photography, schlieren and electric spark imagery, bullet sound wave imagery, forensic ballistic photography, slide rulers, punch cards, computer diagrams, and a soundtrack by Scanner. Like a frantic animation storyboard, it explores the flickering space between the frames, testing the perceptual mechanics of visual interpolation, the possibility of reading or deciphering the gap between before and after. Interpolation - the main task of the women studying ballistics in WW2 - is the construction or guessing of missing data using only two known data points. The film tries to unpack this gap, open it up to interrogation. It questions how we read, interpolate or construct the gaps between bullet and hole, perpetrator and victim, presence and absence. The project involves exchanges with specialists in this area such as the Cranfield University Forensics department, London-based Forensic Firearms consultancy, the Imperial War Museum, the ENIAC programmers project, the Smithsonian Institute, and Forensic Scientists at Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (USA). Interactive gallery installation which playfully re-contextualised online news feeds from CNN’s website with a soundtrack of found music in order to comment on an online environment where 'serious' news and trivial 'infotainment' often occupy the same space. ‘CNN Interactive just got more interactive’ aimed to investigate the balance between information and ‘info-tainment’ on the web. It demonstrated how the authority and presence of global news corporations online could be playfully subverted by enabling the audience to add a variety of emotively titled soundtracks to the monolithic CNN Interactive website. The project also explored how a work could exist dually as website and gallery installation. ‘CNN interactive’ contributes to the taxonomy of new media art as a new form of contemporary art. One of the first examples in the world of a gallery installation using live Internet data, it is also one of the first attempts in a new media art context to address how individuals respond to and comprehend the changed nature of the news as an immediate phenomenon as relayed by network communications systems. 'CNN interactive’ continues Craighead and Thomson’s research into how live digital networked information can be re-purposed as artistic material within gallery installation contexts but with specific reference to online-international news events, rather than arbitrary data sources (see e-poltergeist, output 1). ‘CNN Interactive’ was commissioned by Tate Britain for the exhibition ‘Art and Money Online’. This was the first gallery exhibition in Tate Britain featuring work that utilised and explored new media as an artistic area, and the first work commissioned by the Tate to operate simultaneously as an online gallery artwork. Geography has long been a predominantly visual discipline, but recent work in geography has sought to explore the multisensory, embodied, emotional and affective dimensions of people’s relations with places. One way to engage this type of exploration is through the use of sound walks: walks along a specified route accompanied by a soundtrack (on headphones or stationary speakers) that conveys information, enacts a story, produces an ambience or atmosphere, or illuminates certain aspects of the environment through which the listener is walking. This thesis aims to show how geographers can benefit from using sound walks as thinking tools, representational tools and teaching tools. Drawing on my own experiences producing sound walks, I first examine the ways that sound walk production processes help generate productive geographical thinking for those producing sound walks (Chapter Two). The various stages of producing a sound walk require different skill sets, pose different challenges, and require different sorts of environmental awareness, and therefore present novel opportunities for developing geographical insights about specific places or spatial relations. Second, I focus on four experientially-oriented aspects of sound walks – using multiple senses, walking, contingency, and moments of interaction – to argue that sound walks can be useful representational tools for geographers, whether those creating sound walks subscribe to a representational or non-representational theory of knowledge (Chapter Three). The value of sound walks as representational tools is in the experience of ‘doing’ them. That is, audiences discover for themselves through interaction what is being represented, rather than having it delivered to them. The experiential elements of ‘doing’ sound walks recommend them as potentially helpful representational tools for geographers. Third, by examining the work of a small sample of fourth year “Advanced Geography of Music” students, I develop the argument that sound walks can be effective tools for teaching students and for creating circumstances for students to learn independently (Chapter Four). Sound walks have potential to be effective pedagogical tools because they are commensurate with several key pedagogical schools of thought that emphasise the importance of requiring students to engage actively with their environment using a combination of senses. The thesis demonstrates that sound walks are a worthwhile resource for geographers to use theoretically, representationally and pedagogically in their work. The next step is for geographers to put them into practice and realize this potential.

L’amusie congénitale est un trouble neuro-développemental qui s’exprime par un déficit de discrimination tonale fine. Le cerveau des amusiques ne répond pas aux petites différences de hauteur, tel que révélé par l’absence de la composante de potentiel évoqué P3b, qui est associée aux processus de discrimination tonale tardifs et conscients. Peu d’études se sont penchées sur les mécanismes précoces et préconscients de discrimination tonale chez les amusiques, qui peuvent être étudiés par l’entremise d’une composante de potentiel évoqué appelée la négativité de discordance (MMN). Certaines études ont démontré qu’il est possible d’enregistrer la MMN pendant la présentation d’un film avec la trame sonore en simultané aux sons visant à évoquer la composante. Toutefois, une étude a démontré que la présentation de la trame sonore réduisait l’amplitude de la MMN, sans néanmoins clarifier la nature de l’effet d’interférence en cause. Les objectifs du présent projet sont d’abord, d’investiguer les effets à l’origine de la réduction d’amplitude de la MMN observée lors de la présentation d’un film avec la trame sonore, puis d’évaluer cette même composante chez les amusiques. La première étude visait à déterminer si un effet d’interférence attentionnelle ou acoustique était en cause dans la réduction d’amplitude observée sur la MMN lors de la présentation de la trame sonore d’un film. Les résultats ont montré qu’un effet de masquage acoustique, attribuable à la trame sonore, était responsable de la réduction d’amplitude de la MMN, cette dernière augmentant au fur et à mesure que l’intensité sonore de la trame du film était réduite. La seconde étude a été conduite dans le but d’investiguer la MMN chez les amusiques et de vérifier si le complexe d’ondes anormales N2b-P3b, observé en réponse aux grandes différences tonales chez les amusiques, pouvait être attribuable à un effet de saillance des stimuli. Dans un premier temps, nous avons comparé la MMN des amusiques à celle des contrôles, puis nous avons modifié le paradigme expérimental visant à évoquer la N2b-P3b en ajustant les probabilités d’occurrence des sons présentés aux contrôles en fonction des sons perçus par les amusiques. Les résultats ont montré que le cerveau des amusiques parvient à discriminer les différences de hauteur à un niveau précoce et préconscient, tel que révélé par une MMN normale, mais que les réponses cérébrales plus tardives, associées au processus de discrimination des hauteurs conscient, sont anormales chez les amusiques, et ce, uniquement pour les petites différences de hauteur, tel que révélé par l’absence de la P3b. En conclusion, ces résultats démontrent que l’amplitude de la MMN est affectée de manière significative par la présentation de la trame sonore d’un film et que cela est attribuable à un effet d’interférence acoustique. Dans un deuxième temps, nous avons démontré que les mécanismes précoces et préconscients de discrimination tonale sont préservés chez les amusiques, et que le déficit sous-jacent à l’amusie congénitale est attribuable à une atteinte du processus de discrimination tonale fine associé à un niveau de traitement cérébral tardif et conscient, le complexe d’ondes anormales N2b-P3b étant pour sa part attribuable à un effet de saillance des stimuli.

Un scénario naît dans l’esprit d’un être, inspiré par un événement, une personne, une histoire lue ou racontée. Liv repose sur la vie du personnage principal, Livia, une force de la nature au parcours houleux. Ce texte théorique qui accompagne le scénario « character-based » (basé sur un personnage) intitulé Liv consiste en une réflexion sur notre parcours de scénariste. Ayant déjà considéré les multiples angles qui ont contribué à notre texte et au développement de l’histoire, tant au point de vue historique qu’artistique, nous nous pencherons également sur les complications inhérentes à la création d’une chronique intimiste d’un personnage marginal forgé par un riche entourage multiculturel, par divers segments de la société montréalaise d’avant et d’après-guerre et tout ce que cela implique, en nous basant sur des livres d’histoires de la ville, des œuvres cinématographiques de l’époque, et sur les témoignages de gens qui ont soit connu l’héroïne ou tout simplement des Montréalais qui lui sont contemporains.

The project addresses a key problem with contemporary debates regarding ideas of ‘performativity’ and ‘fictioning’ (Foucault/Deleuze/Butler) whereby the structural requirement for an ‘End’ pre-determines or back-codes the ‘story’ or progression of events leading up to this ‘End’ and therefore cuts against the potentials claimed for ‘performance’ and ‘performativity’.
