Skeleton is a high‐speed Winter Olympic sport performed on the same twisting, downhill ice tracks used for Bobsleigh & Luge. The single rider sprints and pushes their sled for 20‐30m on a level start section before loading and going through a twisting course of over 1km, at speeds up to 140km/h, experiencing up to 5g. In competition, the top athletes can be within a fraction of a second of each other. The initial short pushing period is believed to be critical to overall performance but it is not well understood. A collaborative project between University of Bath, UK Sport and Tyndall National Institute is instrumenting skeleton athletes, training equipment and test tracks with Tyndall’s Wireless Inertial Measurement Unit technology in order to investigate and improve understanding of this phase of a skeleton run. It is hoped this will lead to improved training regimes and better performance of such elite, Olympic level athletes. This work presents an initial look at the system as implemented and data recorded.

We discuss how common problems arising with multi/many core distributed architectures can he effectively handled through co-design of parallel/distributed programming abstractions and of autonomic management of non-functional concerns. In particular, we demonstrate how restricted patterns (or skeletons) may be efficiently managed by rule-based autonomic managers. We discuss the basic principles underlying pattern+manager co-design, current implementations inspired by this approach and some result achieved with proof-or-concept, prototype.

Reductive cyclisation of ail E-vinyl bromide with ail allylic acetate proceeds under palladium catalysis 10 give the 8-dehydropumiliotoxin skeleton, a potential advanced precursor to 8-deoxypumiliotoxin alkaloids. Control of the stereochemistry of the E-vinyl bromide precursor is achieved readily using the Kogen or Bruckner bromophosphonate reagents and the reductive cyclisation proceeds with retention of the vinyl bromide stereochemistry. The mechanism for the cyclisation involves an in situ conversion of the allylic acetate to ail allyl stannane followed by ail intramolecular Stille-type coupling.

Urocortin (Ucn 1), a 40 amino acid long peptide related to corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) was discovered 19 years ago, based on its sequence homology to the parent molecule. Its existence was inferred in the CNS because of anatomical and pharmacological discrepancies between CRF and its two receptor subtypes. Although originally found in the brain, where it has opposing actions to CRF and therefore confers stress-coping mechanisms, Ucn 1 has subsequently been found throughout the periphery including heart, lung, skin, and immune cells. It is now well established that this small peptide is involved in a multitude of physiological and pathophysiological processes, due to its receptor subtype distribution and promiscuity in second messenger signalling pathways. As a result of extensive studies in this field, there are now well over one thousand peer reviewed publications involving Ucn 1. In this review, we intend to highlight some of the less well known actions of Ucn 1 and in particular its role in neuronal cell protection and maintenance of the skeletal system, both by conventional methods of reviewing the literature and using bioinformatics, to highlight further associations between Ucn 1 and disease conditions. Understanding how Ucn 1 works in these tissues, will help to unravel its role in normal and pathophysiological processes. This would ultimately allow the generation of putative medical interventions for the alleviation of important diseases such as Parkinson's disease, arthritis, and osteoporosis.

Thyroid hormone (TH) plays a key role on post-natal bone development and metabolism, while its relevance during fetal bone development is uncertain. To Study this, pregnant once were made hypothyroid and fetuses harvested at embryonic days (E) 12.5, 14.5, 16.5 and 18.5. Despite a marked reduction in fetal tissue concentration of both T4 and T3, bone development, as assessed at the distal epiphyseal growth plate of the femur and vertebra, was largely preserved Lip to E16.5. Only at E18.5, the hypothyroid fetuses exhibited a reduction in femoral type I and type X collagen and osteocalcin mRNA levels, in the length and area of the proliferative and hypertrophic zones, in the number of chondrocytes per proliferative column, and in the number of hypertrophic chondrocyres, in addition to a slight delay in endochondral and intramembranous ossification. This Suggests that LIP to E 16.5, thyroid hormone signaling in bone is kept to a minimum. In fact, measuring the expression level of the activating and inactivating iodothyronine deiodinases (D2 and D3) helped understand how this is achieved. D3 mRNA was readily detected as early as E14.5 and its expression decreased markedly (similar to 10-fold) at E18.5, and even more at 14 days after birth (P14). In contrast. D2 mRNA expression increased significantly by E18.5 and markedly (similar to 2.5-fold) by P14. The reciprocal expression levels of D2 and D3 genes during early bone development along with the absence of a hypothyroidism-induced bone phenotype at this time Suggest that coordinated reciprocal deiodinase expression keeps thyroid hormone signaling in bone to very low levels at this early stage of bone development. The cosmological constant is shown to have an algebraic meaning: it is essentially an eigenvalue of a Casimir invariant of the Lorentz group acting on the spaces tangent to every spacetime. This is found in the context of de Sitter spacetimes, for which the Einstein equation is a relation between operators. Nevertheless, the result brings, to the foreground the skeleton algebraic structure underlying the geometry of general physical spacetimes. which differ from one another by the fleshening of that structure by different tetrad fields.
