The progressive ageing of population has turned the mild cognitive impairment (MCI) into a prevalent disease suffered by elderly. Consequently, the spatial disorientation has become a significant problem for older people and their caregivers. The ambient-assisted living applications are offering location-based services for empowering elderly to go outside and encouraging a greater independence. Therefore, this paper describes the design and technical evaluation of a location-awareness service enabler aimed at supporting and managing probable wandering situations of a person with MCI. Through the presence capabilities of the IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) architecture, the service will alert patient's contacts if a hazardous situation is detected depending on his location. Furthermore, information about the older person's security areas has been included in the user profile managed by IMS. In doing so, the service enabler introduced contribute to “context-awareness” paradigm allowing the adaptation and personalization of services depending on user's context and specific conditions or preferences.

Background: Semantic Web technologies have been widely applied in the life sciences, for example by data providers such as OpenLifeData and through web services frameworks such as SADI. The recently reported OpenLifeData2SADI project offers access to the vast OpenLifeData data store through SADI services. Findings: This article describes how to merge data retrieved from OpenLifeData2SADI with other SADI services using the Galaxy bioinformatics analysis platform, thus making this semantic data more amenable to complex analyses. This is demonstrated using a working example, which is made distributable and reproducible through a Docker image that includes SADI tools, along with the data and workflows that constitute the demonstration. Conclusions: The combination of Galaxy and Docker offers a solution for faithfully reproducing and sharing complex data retrieval and analysis workflows based on the SADI Semantic web service design patterns.

Coenzyme Q (ubiquinone or Q) plays a well known electron transport function in the respiratory chain, and recent evidence suggests that the reduced form of ubiquinone (QH2) may play a second role as a potent lipid-soluble antioxidant. To probe the function of QH2 as an antioxidant in vivo, we have made use of a Q-deficient strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae harboring a deletion in the COQ3 gene [Clarke, C. F., Williams, W. & Teruya, J. H. (1991) J. Biol. Chem. 266, 16636-16644]. Q-deficient yeast and the wild-type parental strain were subjected to treatment with polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are prone to autoxidation and breakdown into toxic products. In this study we find that Q-deficient yeast are hypersensitive to the autoxidation products of linolenic acid and other polyunsaturated fatty acids. In contrast, the monounsaturated oleic acid, which is resistant to autoxidative breakdown, has no effect. The hypersensitivity of the coq3delta strains can be prevented by the presence of the COQ3 gene on a single copy plasmid, indicating that the sensitive phenotype results solely from the inability to produce Q. As a result of polyunsaturated fatty acid treatment, there is a marked elevation of lipid hydroperoxides in the coq3 mutant as compared with either wild-type or respiratory-deficient control strains. The hypersensitivity of the Q-deficient mutant can be rescued by the addition of butylated hydroxytoluene, alpha-tocopherol, or trolox, an aqueous soluble vitamin E analog. The results indicate that autoxidation products of polyunsaturated fatty acids mediate the cell killing and that QH2 plays an important role in vivo in protecting eukaryotic cells from these products.

This paper explores the factors of service quality in higher education and how they contribute to the overall satisfaction and behavioral intentions of students. Our research has three facets. The first is a conceptual issue: using different instrument for the measurement of academic and administrative quality as opposed to an overall assessment of quality. The second is a measurement issue: measuring directly disconfirmation instead of separately measuring perception and expectation. The third issue concerns the concept of minimum service quality level versus an ideal one (zone of tolerance), and their inferences with the disconfirmation concept.

QoS plays a key role in evaluating a service or a service composition plan across clouds and data centers. Currently, the energy cost of a service's execution is not covered by the QoS framework, and a service's price is often fixed during its execution. However, energy consumption has a great contribution in determining the price of a cloud service. As a result, it is not reasonable if the price of a cloud service is calculated with a fixed energy consumption value, if part of a service's energy consumption could be saved during its execution. Taking advantage of the dynamic energy-Aware optimal technique, a QoS enhanced method for service computing is proposed, in this paper, through virtual machine (VM) scheduling. Technically, two typical QoS metrics, i.e., the price and the execution time are taken into consideration in our method. Moreover, our method consists of two dynamic optimal phases. The first optimal phase aims at dynamically benefiting a user with discount price by transparently migrating his or her task execution from a VM located at a server with high energy consumption to a low one. The second optimal phase aims at shortening task's execution time, through transparently migrating a task execution from a VM to another one located at a server with higher performance. Experimental evaluation upon large scale service computing across clouds demonstrates the validity of our method.

Service virtualisation is a supporting tool for DevOps to generate interactive service models of dependency systems on which a system-under-test relies. These service models allow applications under development to be continuously tested against production-like conditions. Generating these virtual service models requires expert knowledge of the service protocol, which may not always be available. However, service models may be generated automatically from network traces. Previous work has used the Needleman-Wunsch algorithm to select a response from the service model to play back for a live request. We propose an extension of the Needleman-Wunsch algorithm, which uses entropy analysis to automatically detect the critical matching fields for selecting a response. Empirical tests against four enterprise protocols demonstrate that entropy weighted matching can improve response accuracy.

lnformation technology (IT) and, in particular, the Internet is dramatically impacting on the services sector. This paper specifically investigates the relative impact of several forms of internet use on perceived performance for two groups of service organisations - retail service firms and professlonal health service firms. Using a mailed out self-administered questionnaire, 625 completed questionnaires were obtained and 43 per cent of respondents reported that they used the lternet. Thus the final usable sample in the study comprised 262 respondents. Results showed that the Internet does significantly influence perceived performance in both types of service firms. However, there are differences in the forms of lntemet use between the two service groups and their relative effect on performance. For retail firms, use of transactional function, such as ordering, selling and payment was found to be positively related to increases in perceived performance. In contrast, for professional health service firms, the ability to search for information on products and/or services was found to be positively associated with perceived performance. Finally, theoretical and managerial implications of the findings of this study are discussed.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to determine consumer perceptions of service quality in wet markets and supermarkets in Hong Kong. Design/methodology/approach – A questionnaire was developed and distributed via a convenience sample to consumers in shopping malls in Causeway Bay, Mong Kok and Tsuen Wan. Findings – The study finds that supermarkets outperformed wet markets across all aspects of service quality as measured by SERVQUAL-P. Research limitations/implications – Implications suggest that wet market vendors are not providing the level of service quality demanded by their customers. In particular, findings suggest that wet market vendors need to improve the visual attractiveness of their stalls, work on making them look more professional and start using more modern equipment. Practical implications – Wet market vendors in conjunction with government representatives need to develop standards of service quality for wet markets across Hong Kong. This is imperative if the wet market model is to survive in what is a highly competitive food retailing industry. Without action, it appears that the supermarketization of the Hong Kong food retailing industry will continue unabated. Originality/value – This paper adds to a small but growing research stream examining service quality in the food retailing industry in Hong Kong. It provides empirical results that guide suggested actions for change.
