Under different perspectives of interpretation and analysis, the notions of localism and universalism in the fictional production of Guimares Rosa have been strongly explored by the criticism, especially in Grande serto: veredas [The devil to pay in the backlands], in which these two dimensions overlapped and complementary become more intricate and profuse. Taking the analytical line of historical, social and political dimensions of the novel for granted not regarding it as an essay or strict allegory of the country the present study proposes a new reading of the composition with the interpretation of the articulation of these two dimensions in the forming of the jaguno system (ROSA, 1970, p.391), that is a concept created by Guimares Rosa and which transcends the historical and sociological reality. The articulation of the social, political and cultural elements figure in Guimares Rosas fiction and becomes an issue for wider debates and reflections, so that the particular element of the novel enables a universal survey. Based on diverse critical apprehensions of the novel, this paper aims to investigate the levels of the literary composition in which the local-universal articulation associated with the representation of the jaguno is constructed. In order to do that, the theoretical study is based on three dimensions of studies: a) critical essays about Guimares Rosa, the totality of his work and specific critical essays about Grande serto: veredas [The devil to pay in the backlands] and the jaguno system, b) theoretical apparatus concerning the history, the politics and the Brazilian culture related to the cangao; and c) theoretical subsidies for the study of the narrative

These approaches reveal the speaker's attitudes, their feelings expressed in statements and in the contexts in which those expressions are used. Cagliari (1989) calls this kind of discursive reference as prosodic markers in literary writing. In this project, the corpus for the analysis comes from the work of Guimares Rosa: Manuelzo e Miguilim. The main goal of the present project is to develop studies on the subject, since there is virtually nothing done about the prosodic writing markers. Develop working methods is an important objective, in order to show how the prosodic markers can be studied. This type of study is not only important to linguistics: phonetics, textual analysis and discourse, but also to literary studies. Different ages of literary expressions used differently such resources as shown by the work of Cagliari (1989). The methodology of this project starts collecting data to compose the corpus with examples categorized as prosodic markers. Then, according to prosodic theories, these expressions are classified in types. The contexts in which they appear are important elements and they will be highlighted. The narrative of the plot is also an important context. Dialogues are good source of prosodic markers. In the work of Guimares Rosa: Manuelzo e Miguilim, it was observed that the author likes to reveal the feelings of the characters in the novel through stated words in their speech. There are prosodic markers showing feeling like: intimidating, serene, gentle, cheerful, worried, angry, with irony, etc. The authors also refer to the fact that the character pronounced his speech with different voice qualities such as loud, hoarse, whispering, etc. This project studies the association between some prosodic elements of speech and their occurrence in literary texts as prosodic writing markers, as defined in the project. The data come from the phonetic descriptions of words and expressions regarded as prosodic...

Memory, the ability of keeping and remembering past states of consciousness and everything that could be associated with them, is one of the human properties responsible for the construction of experience, knowledge and preservation of individuals identity. However, recalling is also the way we keep relationships with time, factor that is essential and inherent to our existence and responsible for the fact that we have memory. As for the narrative, as for life, time is a prime category, because it is in time that narrated or experienced events happen. This relationship between time and memory is remarkable in O burrinho pedrs, Guimares Rosas short story present in his debut book, Sagarana. In this story, we can notice, generally, the characters use memory as a way to return to the past, evoking, consciously or unconsciously, the experience and its result, the wisdom, to help on the understanding of present situations. So, this research has as objective to analyze how time and memory relate and become indispensable to the development of the narrative and to the construction of the other categories - character, narrator and space. The theoretical foundation is based on studies clustered in three dimensions: a) theoretical essays about Guimares Rosas work in general and the particular short story b) philosophical and/or psychological propositions about memory and time, and c) propositions about the mentioned categories of narrative
