The induction of CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) is desirable for immunization against many diseases, and recombinant-synthetic peptide antigens are now favored agents to use. However, a major problem is how to induce CTLs, which requires a T1-type response to such synthetic antigens. We report that T1-type (generating high CTL, low antibody) or T2-type (the reciprocal) responses can be induced by conjugation of the antigen to the carbohydrate polymer mannan: T1 responses are selected by using oxidizing conditions; T2 responses are selected by using reducing conditions for the conjugation. Using human MUC1 as a model antigen in mice, immunization with oxidized mannan-MUC1 fusion protein (ox-M-FP) led to complete tumor protection (challenge up to 5 x 10(7) MUC1+ tumor cells), CTLs, and a high CTL precursor (CTLp) frequency (1/6900), whereas immunization with reduced mannan-MUC1 FP (red-M-FP) led to poor protection after challenge with only 10(6) MUC1+ tumor cells, no CTLs, and a low CTLp frequency (1/87,800). Ox-M-FP selects for a T1 response (mediated here by CD8+ cells) with high interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) secretion, no interleukin 4 (IL-4), and a predominant IgG2a antibody response; red-M-FP selects for a T2-type response with IL-4 production and a high predominant IgG1 antibody response but no IFN-gamma.

In the present Letter several carbolactones (oxidative products) are obtained under aprotic cathodic conditions in the preparative scaled electrolysis of 1,2-quinones in a divided electrochemical cell and in the presence of oxygen. When 9,10-phenanthrenequinone is reduced 6H-dibenzo[b,d]pyran-6-one and [1,1′-biphenyl]-2,2′-dicarboxylic acid are obtained as major products. In the reduction of 1,2-naphthoquinone, 2-benzopyran-1(1H)-one, and 2-(2-carboxyethenyl)-benzoic acid were formed as main products. The proposed mechanism to explain the formation of these and other products, that involves an electron-transfer reaction to the oxygen in air, is now discussed.

The reaction of various 1-pivaloyl-1H-tetrazoles with excess lithium and a catalytic amount of naphthalene (20 mol%) led, after treatment with methanol, to the corresponding free tetrazoles through reductive C–N bond cleavage. This methodology represents a reasonable alternative to other nonreductive protocols.

A new method for debromination of organics by a reductive medium like polypropylene is investigated. The reaction is carried out in inert atmosphere to avoid rapid oxidation of the polymer. Through this detoxification procedure, hydrogen bromide and small brominated alkanes are formed. Experiments in closed ampoules are carried out with tetrabromobisphenol A, dibromophenol, pentabromodiphenyl ether, dichlorophenol and an oil formed by pyrolysis of printed circuit boards in the Haloclean® process. The reaction is examined under isothermal conditions in a temperature range between 300 and 400°C and a residence time between 10 and 30 min. Optimal conditions were found at 350°C and at a residence time of 20 min. As chlorinated phenols are not destroyed under these conditions, the process may be a valuable procedure to gain hydrogen bromide out of mixtures of halogenated feed materials. Also, under atmospheric pressure, a reaction between polypropylene and brominated compounds takes place as could be proved by thermogravimetric analysis. Bromobenzene has an accelerating effect on the rate of weight loss of the polymer, but at higher concentrations, it can also be slowed down. © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The real-quaternionic indicator, also called the $\delta$ indicator, indicates if a self-conjugate representation is of real or quaternionic type. It is closely related to the Frobenius-Schur indicator, which we call the $\varepsilon$ indicator. The Frobenius-Schur indicator $\varepsilon(\pi)$ is known to be given by a particular value of the central character. We would like a similar result for the $\delta$ indicator. When $G$ is compact, $\delta(\pi)$ and $\varepsilon(\pi)$ coincide. In general, they are not necessarily the same. In this thesis, we will give a relation between the two indicators when $G$ is a real reductive algebraic group. This relation also leads to a formula for $\delta(\pi)$ in terms of the central character. For the second part, we consider the construction of the local Langlands correspondence of $GL(2,F)$ when $F$ is a non-Archimedean local field with odd residual characteristics. By re-examining the construction, we provide new proofs to some important properties of the correspondence. Namely, the construction is independent of the choice of additive character in the theta correspondence.

Reductive dechlorination of TCE and cis-DCE by zero-valent iron and iron-based bimetallic reductants
Resumo:
CEs are the most frequently detected pollutants in groundwater. Several studies have been shown iron-based bimetallic reductants as a good method toward to chlorinated ethylenes degradation. However, many fundamental issues surrounding the chemistry of this phenomena remains elusive. In this study, kinetics and compound specific isotope analysis for reductive dechlorination of TCE and cis-DCE by unamended iron and iron-based bimetal reductants was evaluated. Generally, all the bimetals reductants tested revealed to increase the reactivity of the degradation, in which palladium and nickel were the additional metals more reactive. Ethene and ethane were the major products of TCE degradation. It is supported the simultaneous hydrogenolysis and β-elimination reaction hypothesis, however, the first step of TCE degradation by Au/Fe undergoes preferably by β-elimination, while by unamended iron, Pt/Fe and Co/Fe goes preferably by hydrogenolysis.
