With the imposition of the suspension of production and subsequent banning of incandescent light bulbs will be necessary to replace it by other more energy-efficient. Although the main alternative is the compact fluorescent lamp, the environmental impact caused by it due to incorrect disposal and the amount of harmonics included in the network resulting in losses related to the quality of electric power system makes them sought new alternatives for lighting systems that are efficient and have low environmental impact. In this context, the LED (Lighting Emitting Diode), based on solid-state components, is presented as an option for new projects and replacement of existing lighting. In this work we studied aspects of energy, environmental and economic impacts of a possible replacement of conventional lighting systems for new technology. From laboratory tests and surveys of the costs of different types of lamps used for residential lighting, we performed a comparative analysis considering energy and economic aspects which showed that the LED technology, but has a high initial investment, it is best when power quality and environmental preservation are relevant factors in decision making for the choice of technology to be used in the lighting system

The European Union set the ambitious target of reducing energy consumption by 20% within 2020. This goal demands a tremendous change in how we generate and consume energy and urgently calls for an aggressive policy on energy efficiency. Since 19% of the European electrical energy is used for lighting, considerable savings can be achieved with the development of novel and more efficient lighting systems. In this thesis, accomplished in the frame of the EU project CELLO, I report some selected goals we achieved attempting to develop highly efficient, flat, low cost and flexible light sources using Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells (LECs), based on ionic cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes. After an extensive introduction about LECs and solid-state lighting in general, I focus on the research we carried out on cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes displaying deep-blue emission, which has turned out to be a rather challenging task. In order to demonstrate the wide versatility of this class of compounds, I also report a case in which some tailored iridium(III) complexes act as near-infrared (NIR) sources. In fact, standard NIR emitting devices are typically expensive and, also in this case, LECs could serve as low-cost alternatives in fields were NIR luminescence is crucial, such as telecommunications and bioimaging. Since LECs are based on only one active material, in the last chapter I stress the importance of an integrated approach toward the right selection of suitable emitters not only from the photophysical, but also from the point of view of material science. An iridium(III) complex, once in the device, is interacting with ionic liquids, metal cathodes, electric fields, etc. All these interactions should be taken in to account if Europe really wants to implement more efficient lighting paradigms, generating light beyond research labs.

ABSTRACT. The interest in LED lighting has been growing recently due to the high efficacy, lifelime and ruggedness that this technology offers. However the key element to guarantee those parameters with these new electronic devices is to keep under control the working temperature of the semiconductor crystal. This paper propases a LED lamp design that fulfils the requ irements of a PV lighting systems, whose main quality criteria is reliability. It uses directly as a power supply a non·stabilized constant voltage source, as batteries. An electronic control architecture is used to regulate the current applied to the LEO matri)( according to their temperature and the voltage output value of the batteries with two pulse modulation signals (PWM) signals. The first one connects and disconnects the LEOs to the power supply and the second one connects and disconnects several emitters to the electric circuit changing its overall impedance. A prototype of the LEO lamp has been implemented and tested at different temperaturas and battery voltages.

ABSTRACT. ABSTRACT. The objective of this end of degree project is conducting an essay reliability of electronic components, more concretely LEDs, in order to study their behavior throughout its lifespan. Due to the long duration of the LEDs, a essay of this type could last for years, so it is necessary to perform an accelerated essay which significantly shorten the time of the experiment, testing should be subjected to greater efforts than in normal operation. Today, LEDs are used in many applications due to its many advantages over other conventional lighting systems or signaling. In numerous cases are used on the outside, enduring high changes in temperature and humidity, hence the importance of reliability essays, showing the possible causes of failure, the effects produced by these failures and aspects of design, manufacturing and maintenance that may affect them. As a result of the ageing of the LEDs, they may show a reduction in light output and a worsening of the chromatic properties. The LEDs used in this project are AlInGaP, red and high brightness. To speed up the essay will be used a climatic chamber to simulate specific environmental conditions, specifically 85 ° C and 85 % RH. In addition, is pe rformed a periodic monitoring using an automatic measurement system designed in LabVIEW , which , simultaneously will performed measurements and will manage the injection current to the LEDs while are inside of the climatic chamber. 4 strips of LEDs are created to inject a different level of current in each, so can compare the degradation in terms of this parameter. Out of the climatic chamber are obtained the characteristic curves of voltage-current of each LED at a constant room temperature, set by a Peltier module. Also, measures light power and the emitted spectrum. The results of each of the measures and a reliability study and degradation suffered by the LEDs will be discussed. This PFC can be divided into the following steps, the essay being the longest part: • Search bibliography, documentation and standards. • Familiarization with equipment and software, studying the management and the operation of the temperature-humidity environmental chamber and applying software (LabVIEW applications and spectrometer software). • Development of hardware and systems necessary for the conduct of the essay. • Carrying out the essay. • Analysis of results.
