Ramp signalling is an access control for motorways, in which a traffic signal is placed at on-ramps to regulate the rate of vehicles entering the motorway and thus to preserve the motorway capacity. In general, ramp signalling algorithms fall into two categories: local control and coordinated control by their effective scope. Coordinated ramp signalling strategies make use of measurements from the entire motorway network to operate individual ramp signals for the optimal performances at the network level. This study proposes a multi-hierarchical strategy for coordinated ramp signalling. The strategy is structured in two layers. At the higher layer with a longer update interval, coordination group is assembled and disassembled based on the location of high-risk breakdown flow. At the lower layer with a shorter update interval, individual ramps are hired to serve the coordination and are also released based on the prevailing congestion level on the ramp. This strategy is modelled and applied to the northbound Pacific Motorway micro-simulation platform (AIMSUN). The simulation results show an effective congestion mitigation of the proposed strategy.

Work zone safety studies have traditionally relied on historical crash records—an approach which is reactive in nature as it requires crashes to accumulate first before taking any preventive actions. However, detailed and accurate data on work zone crashes are often not available, as is the case for Australian road work zones. The lack of reliable safety records and the reactive nature of the crash-based safety analysis approach motivated this research to seek alternative and proactive measures of safety. Various surrogate measures of safety have been developed in the traffic safety literature including time to collision, time to accident, gap time, post encroachment time, required deceleration rate, proportion of stopping distances, lateral distance to departure, and time to departure. These measures express how close road-user(s) are from a potential crash by analysing their movement trajectories. A review of this fast-growing literature is presented in this paper from the viewpoint of applying the measures to untangle work zone safety issues. The review revealed that the use of the surrogate measures is very limited for analysing work zone safety, although numerous studies have used these measures for analysing safety in other parts of the road network, such as intersections and motorway ramps. There exist great opportunities for adopting this proactive safety assessment approach to transform work zone safety for both roadworkers and motorists.

In general, RM algorithms fall into two categories by their effective scope: local control and coordinated control. Local control algorithm determines the metering rate based on the traffic condition on adjacent motorway mainline and the on-ramp. Conversely, coordinated RM strategies make use of measurements from the entire motorway network to operate individual ramp signals for optimal performance at the network level. This study proposes a multi-hierarchical strategy for on-ramp coordination. The strategy is structured in two layers. At the higher layer, a centralised, predictive controller plans the coordination control within a long update interval based on the location of high-risk breakdown flow. At the lower layer, reactive controllers determine the metering rates of those ramps involved in the ramp coordination with a short update interval. This strategy is modelled and applied to the northbound model of the Pacific Motorway in a micro-simulation platform (AIMSUN). The simulation results show that the proposed strategy effectively delays the onset of congestion and reduces total congestion with better managed on-ramp queues.

The similar to 2500 km-long Himalaya plate boundary experienced three great earthquakes during the past century, but none of them generated any surface rupture. The segments between the 1905-1934 and the 1897-1950 sources, known as the central and Assam seismic gaps respectively, have long been considered holding potential for future great earthquakes. This paper addresses two issues concerning earthquakes along the Himalaya plate boundary. One, the absence of surface rupture associated with the great earthquakes, vis-a-vis the purported large slip observed from paleoseismological investigations and two, the current understanding of the status of the seismic gaps in the Central Himalaya and Assam, in view of the paleoseismological and historical data being gathered. We suggest that the ruptures of earthquakes nucleating on the basal detachment are likely to be restricted by the crustal ramps and thus generate no surface ruptures, whereas those originating on the faults within the wedges promote upward propagation of rupture and displacement, as observed during the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, that showed a peak offset of 7 m. The occasional reactivation of these thrust systems within the duplex zone may also be responsible for the observed temporal and spatial clustering of earthquakes in the Himalaya. Observations presented in this paper suggest that the last major earthquake in the Central Himalaya occurred during AD 1119-1292, rather than in 1505, as suggested in some previous studies and thus the gap in the plate boundary events is real. As for the Northwestern Himalaya, seismically generated sedimentary features identified in the 1950 source region are generally younger than AD 1400 and evidence for older events is sketchy. The 1897 Shillong earthquake is not a decollement event and its predecessor is probably similar to 1000 years old. Compared to the Central Himalaya, the Assam Gap is a corridor of low seismicity between two tectonically independent seismogenic source zones that cannot be considered as a seismic gap in the conventional sense. Supersonic cluster beam deposition has been used to produce films with different nanostructures by controlling the deposition parameters such as the film thickness, substrate temperature and cluster mass distribution. The field emission properties of cluster-assembled carbon films have been characterized and correlated to the evolution of the film nanostructure. Threshold fields ranging between 4 and 10 V/mum and saturation current densities as high as 0.7 mA have been measured for samples heated during deposition. A series of voltage ramps, i.e., a conditioning process, was found to initiate more stable and reproducible emission. It was found that the presence of graphitic particles (onions, nanotube embryos) in the films substantially enhances the field emission performance. Films patterned on a micrometer scale have been conditioned spot by spot by a ball-tip anode, showing that a relatively high emission site density can be achieved from the cluster-assembled material. Supersonic engine intakes operating supercritically feature shock wave / boundary layer interactions (SBLIs), which are conventionally controlled using boundary layer bleed. The momentum loss of bleed flow causes high drag, compromising intake performance. Micro-ramp sub-boundary layer vortex generators (SBVGs) have been proposed as an alternative form of flow control for oblique SBLIs in order to reduce the bleed requirement. Experiments have been conducted at Mach 2.5 to characterise the flow details on such devices and investigate their ability to control the interaction between an oblique shock wave and the naturally grown turbulent boundary layer on the tunnel floor. Micro-ramps of four sizes with heights ranging from 25% to 75% of the uncontrolled boundary layer thickness were tested. The flow over all sizes of microramp was found to be similar, featuring streamwise counter-rotating vortices which entrain high momentum fluid, locally reducing the boundary layer displacement thickness. When installed ahead of the shock interaction it was found that the positioning of the micro-ramps is of limited importance. Micro-ramps did not eliminate flow separation. However, the previously two-dimensional separation was broken up into periodic three-dimensional separation zones. The interaction length was reduced and the pressure gradient across the interaction was increased.

New types of vortex generators for boundary layer control were investigated experimentally in a flow field which contains a Mach 1.4 normal Shockwave followed by a subsonic diffuser. A parametric study of device height and distance upstream of the normal shock was undertaken with two novel devices: ramped-vanes and split-ramps. Flowfield diagnostics included high-speed Schlieren, oil flow visualization, and pitot-static pressure measurements. A number of flowfield parameters including flow separation, pressure recovery, centerline incompressible boundary layer shape factor, and shock stability were analyzed and compared to the baseline. All configurations tested yielded an elimination of centerline flow separation with the presence of the vortex generators. However, the devices also tended to increase the three-dimensionality of the flow with increased side-wall interaction. When located 25δo upstream of the normal shock, the largest ramped-vane device (whose height was about 0.75 the incoming uncontrolled boundary layer thickness, δo) yielded the smallest centerline incompressible shape factor and the least streamwise oscillations of the normal shock. However, additional studies are needed to better understand the corner interaction effects, which are substantial. © 2010 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

Wind power generation differs from conventional thermal generation due to the stochastic nature of wind. Thus wind power forecasting plays a key role in dealing with the challenges of balancing supply and demand in any electricity system, given the uncertainty associated with the wind farm power output. Accurate wind power forecasting reduces the need for additional balancing energy and reserve power to integrate wind power. Wind power forecasting tools enable better dispatch, scheduling and unit commitment of thermal generators, hydro plant and energy storage plant and more competitive market trading as wind power ramps up and down on the grid. This paper presents an in-depth review of the current methods and advances in wind power forecasting and prediction. Firstly, numerical wind prediction methods from global to local scales, ensemble forecasting, upscaling and downscaling processes are discussed. Next the statistical and machine learning approach methods are detailed. Then the techniques used for benchmarking and uncertainty analysis of forecasts are overviewed, and the performance of various approaches over different forecast time horizons is examined. Finally, current research activities, challenges and potential future developments are appraised.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Chronic inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) synthesis is associated with hypertension, myocardial ischemia, oxidative stress and hypertrophy; expression of adrenomedullin (AM) and intermedin (IMD) and their receptor activity modifying proteins (RAMPs 1-3) is augmented in cardiomyocytes, indicating that the myocardial AM/ IMD system may be activated in response to pressure loading and ischemic insult. The aim was to examine effects on (i) parameters of cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and on (ii) expression of AM and IMD and their receptor components in NO-deficient cardiomyocytes of an intervention chosen specifically for ability to alleviate pressure loading and ischemic injury concurrently. METHODS: The NO synthesis inhibitor, N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 35 mg.kg(-1).day(-1)) was given to rats for 8 weeks, with/ without concurrent administration of beta-adrenoceptor antagonist, atenolol (25 mg.kg(-1).day(-1)) / calcium channel blocker, nifedipine (20mg.kg(-1).day(-1)). RESULTS: In L-NAME treated rats, atenolol / nifedipine abolished increases in systolic blood pressure and plasma AM and IMD levels and in left ventricular cardiomyocytes: (i) normalized increased cell width and mRNA expression of hypertrophic (sk-alpha-actin) and cardio-endocrine (ANP, BNP, ET) genes; (ii) normalized augmented membrane protein oxidation; (iii) normalized mRNA expression of AM, IMD, RAMP1, RAMP2 and RAMP3. CONCLUSIONS: normalization of blood pressure and membrane oxidant status together with prevention of hypertrophy and normalization of the augmented expression of AM, IMD and their receptor components in NO-deficient cardiomyocytes by atenolol / nifedipine supports involvement of both pressure loading and ischemic insult in stimulating cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and induction of these counter-regulatory peptides and their receptor components. Attenuation of augmented expression of IMD in this model cannot however be explained simply by prevention of cardiomyocyte hypertrophy.

Background: Intermedin (IMD), a novel cardiac peptide related to adrenomedullin (AM), protects against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury and attenuates ventricular remodelling. IMD’s actions are mediated by a calcitonin receptor-like receptor in association with receptor activity modifying proteins (RAMPs 1-3). Aim/method: using the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) and normotensive Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rat at 20 weeks of age, to examine (i) the presence of myocardial oxidative stress and concentric hypertrophy; (ii) expression of IMD, AM and receptor components. Results: In left and right ventricular cardiomyocytes from SHR vs. WKY cell width (26% left, 15% right) and mRNA expression of hypertrophic markers ANP (2.7 fold left, 2.7 fold right) and BNP (2.2 fold left, 2.0 fold right) were enhanced. In left ventricular cardiomyocytes only (i) oxidative stress was indicated by increased membrane protein carbonyl content (71%) and augmented production of O2- anion (64%); (ii) IMD (6.8 fold), RAMP1 (2.5 fold) and RAMP3 (2.0 fold) mRNA was increased while AM and RAMP2 mRNA was not altered; (iii) abundance of RAMP1 (by 48%), RAMP2 (by 41%) and RAMP3 (by 90%) monomers in cell membranes was decreased. Conclusion: robust augmentation of IMD expression in hypertrophied left ventricular cardiomyocytes indicates a prominent role for this counter-regulatory peptide in the adaptation of the SHR myocardium to the stresses imposed by chronic hypertension. The local concentration and action of IMD may be further enhanced by down-regulation of NEP within the left ventricle.

Due to the variability of wind power, it is imperative to accurately and timely forecast the wind generation to enhance the flexibility and reliability of the operation and control of real-time power. Special events such as ramps, spikes are hard to predict with traditional methods using solely recently measured data. In this paper, a new Gaussian Process model with hybrid training data taken from both the local time and historic dataset is proposed and applied to make short-term predictions from 10 minutes to one hour ahead. A key idea is that the similar pattern data in history are properly selected and embedded in Gaussian Process model to make predictions. The results of the proposed algorithms are compared to those of standard Gaussian Process model and the persistence model. It is shown that the proposed method not only reduces magnitude error but also phase error.

Portugal é um dos países europeus com melhor cobertura espacial e populacional de rede de autoestradas (5º entre os 27 da UE). O acentuado crescimento desta rede nos últimos anos leva a que seja necessária a utilização de metodologias de análise e avaliação da qualidade do serviço que é prestado nestas infraestruturas, relativamente às condições de circulação. Usualmente, a avaliação da qualidade de serviço é efetuada por intermédio de metodologias internacionalmente aceites, das quais se destaca a preconizada no Highway Capacity Manual (HCM). É com esta última metodologia que são habitualmente determinados em Portugal, os níveis de serviço nas diversas componentes de uma autoestrada (secções correntes, ramos de ligação e segmentos de entrecruzamento). No entanto, a sua transposição direta para a realidade portuguesa levanta algumas reservas, uma vez que os elementos que compõem o ambiente rodoviário (infraestrutura, veículo e condutor) são distintos dos da realidade norte-americana para a qual foi desenvolvida. Assim, seria útil para os atores envolvidos no setor rodoviário dispor de metodologias desenvolvidas para as condições portuguesas, que possibilitassem uma caracterização mais realista da qualidade de serviço ao nível da operação em autoestradas. No entanto, importa referir que o desenvolvimento de metodologias deste género requer uma quantidade muito significativa de dados geométricos e de tráfego, o que acarreta uma enorme necessidade de meios, quer humanos, quer materiais. Esta abordagem é assim de difícil execução, sendo por isso necessário recorrer a metodologias alternativas para a persecução deste objetivo. Ultimamente tem-se verificado o uso cada vez mais generalizado de modelos de simulação microscópica de tráfego, que simulando o movimento individual dos veículos num ambiente virtual permitem realizar análises de tráfego. A presente dissertação apresenta os resultados obtidos no desenvolvimento de uma metodologia que procura recriar, através de simuladores microscópicos de tráfego, o comportamento das correntes de tráfego em secções correntes de autoestradas com o intuito de, posteriormente, se proceder à adaptação da metodologia preconizada no HCM (na sua edição de 2000) à realidade portuguesa. Para tal, com os simuladores microscópicos utilizados (AIMSUN e VISSIM) procurou-se reproduzir as condições de circulação numa autoestrada portuguesa, de modo a que fosse possível analisar as alterações sofridas no comportamento das correntes de tráfego após a modificação dos principais fatores geométricos e de tráfego envolvidos na metodologia do HCM 2000. Para o efeito, realizou-se uma análise de sensibilidade aos simuladores de forma a avaliar a sua capacidade para representar a influência desses fatores, com vista a, numa fase posterior, se quantificar o seu efeito para a realidade nacional e dessa forma se proceder à adequação da referida metodologia ao contexto português. Em resumo, o presente trabalho apresenta as principais vantagens e limitações dos microssimuladores AIMSUN e VISSIM na modelação do tráfego de uma autoestrada portuguesa, tendo-se concluído que estes simuladores não são capazes de representar de forma explícita alguns dos fatores considerados na metodologia do HCM 2000, o que impossibilita a sua utilização como ferramenta de quantificação dos seus efeitos e consequentemente inviabiliza a adaptação dessa metodologia à realidade nacional. São, no entanto, referidas algumas indicações de como essas limitações poderão vir a ser ultrapassadas, com vista à consecução futura dessa adequação.

The objective of this thesis is to study the properties of resistive switching effect based on bistable resistive memory which is fabricated in the form of Al2O3/polymer diodes and to contribute to the elucidation of resistive switching mechanisms. Resistive memories were characterized using a variety of electrical techniques, including current-voltage measurements, small-signal impedance, and electrical noise based techniques. All the measurements were carried out over a large temperature range. Fast voltage ramps were used to elucidate the dynamic response of the memory to rapid varying electric fields. The temperature dependence of the current provided insight into the role of trapped charges in resistive switching. The analysis of fast current fluctuations using electric noise techniques contributed to the elucidation of the kinetics involved in filament formation/rupture, the filament size and correspondent current capabilities. The results reported in this thesis provide insight into a number of issues namely: (i) The fundamental limitations on the speed of operation of a bi-layer resistive memory are the time and voltage dependences of the switch-on mechanism. (ii) The results explain the wide spread in switching times reported in the literature and the apparently anomalous behaviour of the high conductance state namely the disappearance of the negative differential resistance region at high voltage scan rates which is commonly attributed to a “dead time” phenomenon which had remained elusive since it was first reported in the ‘60s. (iii) Assuming that the current is filamentary, Comsol simulations were performed and used to explain the observed dynamic properties of the current-voltage characteristics. Furthermore, the simulations suggest that filaments can interact with each other. (iv) The current-voltage characteristics have been studied as a function of temperature. The findings indicate that creation and annihilation of filaments is controlled by filling and neutralizing traps localized at the oxide/polymer interface. (v) Resistive switching was also studied in small-molecule OLEDs. It was shown that the degradation that leads to a loss of light output during operation is caused by the presence of a resistive switching layer. A diagnostic tool that predicts premature failure of OLEDs was devised and proposed. Resistive switching is a property of oxides. These layers can grow in a number of devices including, organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), spin-valve transistors and photovoltaic devices fabricated in different types of material. Under strong electric fields the oxides can undergo dielectric breakdown and become resistive switching layers. Resistive switching strongly modifies the charge injection causing a number of deleterious effects and eventually device failure. In this respect the findings in this thesis are relevant to understand reliability issues in devices across a very broad field.
