In this work, we investigated the formation of porous silica matrix obtained by hydrothermal treatment under saturated steam condition from Pyrex (R) glass. This investigation was carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD) and Raman microscopy. We observed the presence of connected and homogeneously distributed pores in a non-crystalline silica phase and a detectable interface between silica and remnant glass phases resulting in a framework similar to asymmetric membranes. The results indicate that the process of phase separation takes place at lower temperature than that of glass-transition on the surface of the glass phase. Essential reaction between water and silica at supercritical condition together with the formation and leaching of soluble phase contribute to obtain porous silica matrix, (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. Lanthanum hydroxycarbonate crystals with controlled phases and varied morphologies were prepared on the surface of a non-crystalline substrate, glass. The phases and morphologies of the crystals were controlled conveniently by varying the reaction temperature and the quantity of starting materials. Orthorhombic crystals were obtained at 160 degreesC, distributed individually on the substrate and had a flaky rhombic shape. Hexagonal crystals were obtained at 180 degreesC. The crystals had a rhomboidal shape, were uniform and continuous enough to form a solid film on the substrate. The substrates were corroded under the hydrothermal conditions and offered a coarse surface for the crystal growth. The hexagonal lanthanum hydroxycarbonate was discovered to show significant second harmonic generation, which would be of interest for developing novel optical materials. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. We have developed a new method for the synthesis of Pd nanoparticles with controllable sizes within a silica matrix using solid-supported surfactants in supercritical CO2. XRD, HRTEM and CO chemisorption data show that unformly sized Pd nanoparticles are evenly distributed within the porous silica and are chemically tethered by surfactant molecules [poly(oxyethylene stearyl ether) and fluorinated poly(oxyethylene)]. It is postulated that tiny solid-supported surfactant assemblies act as nano-reactors for the template synthesis of nanoparticles or clusters from the soluble precursors therein.

The aim of this study was to evaluate in humans the amount of new bone after sinus floor elevation with a synthetic bone substitute material consisting of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite embedded in a highly porous silica gel matrix. The lateral approach was applied in eight patients requiring sinus floor elevation to place dental implants. After elevation of the sinus membrane, the cavities were filled with 0.6-mm granules of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite mixed with the patient's blood. A collagen membrane (group 1) or a platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) membrane (group 2) was placed over the bony window. After healing periods between 7 and 11 months (in one case after 24 months), 16 biopsy specimens were harvested with a trephine bur during implant bed preparation. The percentage of new bone, residual filler material, and soft tissue was determined histomorphometrically. Four specimens were excluded from the analysis because of incomplete biopsy removal. In all other specimens, new bone was observed in the augmented region. For group 1, the amount of new bone, residual graft material, and soft tissue was 28.7% ± 5.4%, 25.5% ± 7.6%, and 45.8% ± 3.2%, respectively. For group 2, the values were 28.6% ± 6.90%, 25.7% ± 8.8%, and 45.7% ± 9.3%, respectively. All differences between groups 1 and 2 were not statistically significant. The lowest and highest values of new bone were 21.2% and 34.1% for group 1 and 17.4% and 37.8% for group 2, respectively. The amount of new bone after the use of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite for sinus floor elevation in humans is comparable to values found in the literature for other synthetic or xenogeneic bone substitute materials. There was no additional beneficial effect of the PRF membrane over the non-cross-linked collagen membrane.

Nanocrystalline Fe53Co47 alloy was synthesized by a single-step transmetallation chemical method at room temperature. The Fe53Co47 alloy nanoparticles of 77 and 47 wt% were dispersed in silica matrix by the sol-gel process using tetraethyl orthosilcate. Structural studies reveal that the as-prepared alloy powders are in bcc phase and silica is in an amorphous state. The phase-transition temperature and Mossbauer spectra analysis of the Fe-Co alloy establishes the homogeneous alloy formation. A saturation magnetization of 218 emu/g was obtained for pure FeCo alloy at room temperature. Scanning electron microscopic analysis demonstrates the hollow-sphere morphology for FeCo alloy particles. Magnetic nanocomposite consisting of 47 wt% FeCo-silica shows enhanced thermal stability over the native FeCo alloy. Electrical and dielectric properties of 47 wt% FeCo-silica nanocomposites were investigated as a function of frequency and temperature. It was found that the dielectric constants and dielectric loss were stable throughout the measured temperature (310-373 K). Our results indicate that FeCo-silica nanocomposite is a promising candidate for high-frequency applications. (C) 2010 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

The usage of semiconductor nanostructures is highly promising for boosting the energy conversion efficiency in photovoltaics technology, but still some of the underlying mechanisms are not well understood at the nanoscale length. Ge quantum dots (QDs) should have a larger absorption and a more efficient quantum confinement effect than Si ones, thus they are good candidate for third-generation solar cells. In this work, Ge QDs embedded in silica matrix have been synthesized through magnetron sputtering deposition and annealing up to 800°C. The thermal evolution of the QD size (2 to 10 nm) has been followed by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques, evidencing an Ostwald ripening mechanism with a concomitant amorphous-crystalline transition. The optical absorption of Ge nanoclusters has been measured by spectrophotometry analyses, evidencing an optical bandgap of 1.6 eV, unexpectedly independent of the QDs size or of the solid phase (amorphous or crystalline). A simple modeling, based on the Tauc law, shows that the photon absorption has a much larger extent in smaller Ge QDs, being related to the surface extent rather than to the volume. These data are presented and discussed also considering the outcomes for application of Ge nanostructures in photovoltaics.PACS: 81.07.Ta; 78.67.Hc; 68.65.-k.

The characteristic features of the absorption and photoluminescence spectra of ZnSe quantum dots (QDs) inside a silica matrix derived from a sol-gel method were studied at room temperature. Compared with the bulk materials, the absorption edges of ZnSe QDs in silica gel glass were shifted to higher energies and the spectra exhibited the discrete excitonic features due to the quantum confinement effects. Besides the band-edge emission, photoluminescence at ultraviolet excitation also showed the emissions related to the higher excitonic states. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A series of silica-based organic–inorganic hybrid materials were prepared by the sol–gel process for Cr(III) and Cr(VI) adsorption. These silica materials generally had high surface areas, good physical–chemical stability and high thermal stability. Trialkylmethylammonium bis 2,4,4-trimethylpentylphosphinate ([A336][C272]) and trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium bis 2,4,4-trimethylpentylphosphinate (Cyphos IL 104) were explored as porogens to prepare porous silica and as extractants to extract chromium ions. Cyphos IL 104 and [A336][C272] functionalized silica sorbents (SG-2, SG-5) can be effectively used for the removal of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions by adjusting pH values, whereas trialkylmethylammonium chloride (Aliquat 336) and bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)phosphinic acid (Cyanex 272) functionalized silica sorbents (SG-3, SG-4) can only be used for the removal of the single chromium species, Cr(VI) or Cr(III).

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) as reinforcing components were extended into silica monoliths and thin films via covalent functionalization for the first time. Silica materials have poor mechanical attributes, which limit their applications. Because of the extreme flexibility of SWCNTs and their large interfacial area, they may be very intriguing as reinforcing fillers for the silica matrix. To get more uniform dispersion and stronger interfacial interaction, SWCNTs were covalently functionalized with silane, and then integrated into silica via a sol - gel process, and their properties were also compared with those of pristine SWCNTs. Results show that the silane-functionalized nanotubes resulted in better mechanical properties ( for example, 33% increase in stress, and 53% increase in toughness), as well as higher electron-transfer kinetics.

Terbium complexes with benzoic acid and its derivatives o-hydroxybenzoic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid were in situ synthesized in sol-gel derived silica matrix via a two-step sol-gel process. The formation process of the complex was characterized by fluorescence spectra, absorption spectra and IR spectra. The gels that contain in situ synthesized complexes exhibit the characteristic emission bands of terbium ion. The fluorescence lifetimes of Tb3+ in the silica gels are longer than those in the pure complexes and in the solutions that contain the corresponding complexes. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. A hybrid material with a conductive organic network in an inorganic matrix has been prepared by in-situ hydrolysis/polycondensation of TEOS in an aqueous solution of a solubilized polyaniline. Due to intense hydrogen bonding (indicated by Si-29 NMR and FTIR) the conductive polymer is very well dispersed in the silica matrix. The Figure shows SEM images of a 46/54 wt.-% hybrid at two temperatures (left 20 degreesC, right 100 degreesC).

Binary complexes of europium and terbium with N-propyl-4-carboxyphthalimide (NP) were prepared and characterized. The luminescence behaviors of the lanthanide complexes as well as their doped silica-based composites were investigated by fluorescence spectra. The results indicated that the lanthanide complexes showed fewer emission lines and slightly lower intensities in silica matrix than that of corresponding pure complexes. The lifetimes of the lanthanide complexes became longer when they were incorporated in silica matrix. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Ternary europium complexes with thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) and phenanthroline (phen) were incorporated into SiO2/polymer matrix by a sol-gel method. The gels exhibit the characteristic emission bands of europium ion. In addition, Eu3+ presents a longer fluorescence lifetime in gel than in the corresponding pure complex powder. Concentration effects on the luminescence intensity were investigated. The reasons that are responsible for above results are also discussed in the context.

A novel bonded phase for reversed-phase HPLC was synthesized in two steps. Octylamine was first reacted with beta-(3,4-epoxycyclohexyl)ethyltrimethoxysilane (beta -ECTS) and then the intermediate product was coupled onto porous silica. The prepared packing was characterized by elemental analysis, solid-state C-13 NMR and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). Chromatographic evaluations were carried out by using a mixture of organic compounds including acidic, basic and neutral analytes and methanol-water as binary mobile phase. The results showed that the stationary phase has excellent chromatographic properties and is resistant to hydrolysis between pH = 2 similar to 8. It can be used efficiently for the separation of basic compounds.
