Script for non-verbal performance. ----- ----- ----- Research Component: Silent Treatment: Creating Non-verbal Performance Works for Children ----- ----- ----- The research field of theatre for young people draws on theories of child development and popular culture. SHOW explored personal and social development, friendship and creative play through the lens of the experience of girls aged 8-12. This project consolidated and refined innovative approaches to creating non-verbal theatre performance, and addressed challenges inherent in the creation of a performance by adults for young audiences. A significant finding of the project was the unanticipated convergence of creative practice and research into child behaviour and development: the congruence of content (Female bullying) and theatrical form (non-verbal performance: “Within the hidden culture of aggression, girls fight with body language and relationships instead of fists and knives. In this world, friendship is a weapon, and the sting of a shout pales in comparison to a day of someone’s silence. There is no gesture more devastating than the back turning away Simmons, Rachel (2002:3) Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture Of Aggression In Girls Schwartz Books The creative development and drafting process focussed on negotiating the conceptual design and practical constraints of incorporating diegetic music and video sources into the narrative. The authorial (and production) challenges of creating a script that could facilitate the re-mount a non-verbal work for a company specialising in text-based theatre . ----- ----- ----- Show was commissioned by the Queensland Theatre Company in 2003, toured into Queensland Schools by the Queensland Arts Council and in 2004 was performed at the Sydney Opera House.

Backseat drivers

Script for non verbal performance work for young audiences. Seoul Arts Centre 2000 ----- ----- ----- Selected by ASSITEJ as a representative script for Australia ----- ----- ----- Set entirely in the backseat of a car, with the road behind appearing on a rear-projection screen, Backseat Driver is the story of two very different children battling the fingerdrumming, motor-humming boredom of a long car trip. Using non-verbal performance, video projection and the music of Cliff Richard, Elvis Presley and the Shadows, Backseat Drivers is a comedy for anyone who has ever asked the question ”are we there yet?”. Exploring the power of creative play, Backseat Driver has enjoyed three productions, including a season for Korean audiences at the Seoul Arts Centre in 2001.

Bitter streak

This script, a performative satire on theatre, focussed on 'theatre streaking', was a finalist in the Queensland Theatre Company's George Landen Dann Awards in 2000 (predescessor to the Queensland Premier's Drama Award) ----- ----- ----- It had a workshop reading in 2000 at QTC, with Artistic Director Michael Gow reading the part of the Nude Man.----- ----- ----- It was first performed at QUT in the Woodward Theatre in 2003.

Portrayal of librarians in Australian creative writing

An exploration is made of the ways in which librarians have been depicted in Australian creative writing. Reference is made to characters in novels, short stories, drama and poetry. With respect to novels, there is some consideration of characterisation and its relationship to plot.

Cello day

This one-act two hander was intended as an experiment in incorporating JS Bach’s cello suites into a dramatic context. It also played with the dramatic possibilities and constraints of one character being verbal, and the other non-verbal. This first draft was shortlisted in the 2005 Queensland Theatre Company’s Queensland Premier’s Drama Award.

An obsession with storytelling : conducting oral history interviews for creative writing

Anna Hirsch and Clare Dixon (2008, 190) state that creative writers’ ‘obsession with storytelling…might serve as an interdisciplinary tool for evaluating oral histories.’ This paper enters a dialogue with Hirsch and Dixon’s statement by documenting an interview methodology for a practice-led PhD project, The Artful Life Story: Oral History and Fiction, which investigates the fictionalising of oral history. ----- ----- Alistair Thomson (2007, 62) notes the interdisciplinary nature of oral history scholarship from the 1980s onwards. As a result, oral histories are being used and understood in a variety of arts-based settings. In such contexts, oral histories are not valued so much for their factual content but as sources that are at once dynamic, emotionally authentic and open to a multiplicity of interpretations. How can creative writers design and conduct interviews that reflect this emphasis? ----- ----- The paper briefly maps the growing trend of using oral histories in fiction and ethnographic novels, in order to establish the need to design interviews for arts-based contexts. I describe how I initially designed the interviews to suit the aims of my practice. Once in the field, however, I found that my original methods did not account for my experiences. I conclude with the resulting reflection and understanding that emerged from these problematic encounters, focusing on the technique of steered monologue (Scagliola 2010), sometimes referred to as the Biographic Narrative Interpretative Method (Wengraf 2001, Jones 2006).

The empty city (Stage adaptation)

This pre-production script for a non-verbal, multimedia performance is the outcome of three rounds of creative development (2009-10) focussed on adapting a children's picture book for the stage. Protoype versions of this script were realised at work-in progress performances at the Queensland Performing Arts Complex in January 2009, and the Woodward Theatre in July 2009. Eat, pray, loathe : women’s travel memoir as moving metaphysical journey or narcissistic new-age babble?

This paper considers the contentious space between self-affirmation and selfpreoccupation in Elizabeth Gilbert’s popular travel memoir, Eat, Pray, Love. Following the surveillance of the female confessant, the female traveller has recently come under close scrutiny and public suspicion. She is accused of walking a fine line between critical self-insight and obsessive selfimportance and her travel narratives are branded as accounts of navel gazing that are less concerned with what is seen than with who is doing the seeing. In reading these themes against the backdrop of women’s travel, the possibility arises that the culture of narcissism is increasingly read as a female discursive practice, concerned with authorship, privacy and the subjectivity of truth. The novel, which has been praised by some as ‘the ultimate guide to balanced living’ and dismissed by others as ‘self-serving junk’, poses questions about the requisites in Western culture for being a female traveller and for telling a story that focuses primarily on the self.
