Työn tarkoituksena oli kuparin ja hapon erottaminen toisistaan malliaineliuoksesta membraanitekniikalla. Kaivannaisteollisuudessa happoja käytetään metalleiden liuottamiseen. Lisäksi happamia jätevesiä syntyy sulfidikaivoksissa, sadeveden liuottaessa metalleja. Raskasmetallit ovat erittäin myrkyllistä vesieliöille. Työn tavoitteena oli saada happo ja metalli hyödynnettävään muotoon. Työn kokeellisessa osassa vertailtiin kahta polymeeristä ja keraamista membraania hapon ja metallin erotuksessa. Mittauksissa käytetyt membraanit olivat: AMS Technologies A-3012 ja A-3014 sekä Inopor ® Type SKR. Syöttöliuos sisälsi kuparisulfaattia ja rikkihappoa. Suodatukset tehtiin 30 ºC lämpötilassa useissa paineissa ja pH-arvoissa. Polymeeristen membraanien suodatusnäytteistä saadut retentiot kuparille olivat vastaavia aikaisempien tutkimusten tuloksien kanssa. A-3012 kalvon kuparin retentio oli 95 % ja A-3014 kalvolle kuparin retentio oli 90 %. Lisäksi mittausten korkeimmissa pH-arvoissa (2,9-2,3) happo konsentroitui permeaattiin. Polymeerisillä membraaneilla ei ollut merkkejä kalvon likaantumisesta tai hajoamisesta. Keraamisella membraanilla mitatut tulokset eivät olleet vastaavia aikaisempien tutkimusten tuloksien kanssa. Kuparin retentio olivat 2 ja 20 prosentin välillä, eikä liuoksen pH eronnut syötön ja permeaatin välillä. Tulosten perusteella molemmat tutkitut polymeeriset membraanit soveltuvat kuparin erottamiseen happamasta liuoksesta. Mittauksissa käytetty keraaminen membraani ei sovellu tähän tehtävään.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää kansainvälistymisteorioiden toimivuus laadittaessa kohdeyrityksen hankkimalle juustolaiteliiketoiminnalle kansainvälistymisstrategian linjaukset. Taustamateriaalina tutkittiin laajalti kohdeyrityksen näkökulmasta valittujen kansainvälistymisteorioiden esille tuomia kansainvälistymisen haasteita, edellytyksiä sekä toteuttamismuotoja. Lisäksi tutkittiin kohdeyrityksen juustolaiteliiketoiminnan historian aikana toteutuneet kansainvälistymisvaiheet ja verrattiin niitä vastaaviin kansainvälistymisteorioihin. Juustolaiteliiketoiminnan kansainvälistymistä varten haastateltiin juustoalan asiantuntijoita, juustoliiketoiminnan entisiä avainhenkilöitä sekä kohdeyrityksen johtoa ja hallituksen jäseniä. Juustomarkkinoiden laajuus ja houkuttelevuus sekä alan tärkeimmät kilpailijat analysoitiin tehdyn markkinaselvityksen avulla. Kerätyn tutkimusmateriaalin perusteella laadittiin kohdeyrityksen juustolaiteliiketoiminnalle kansainvälistymisstrategian linjaukset. Johtopäätöksenä todetaan aikaisemmin tehtyjen tunnettujen kansainvälistymisteorioiden yhdistelemisen käyttökelpoisuus tapauskohtaisesti sovellettuna useimpien teollisuudenalan pk-yritysten kansainvälistymissuunnitelmien laadinnassa. Jatkotutkimuksia ehdotetaan tehtäväksi globalisaation ja digitalisoitumisen avatessa uusia kansainvälistymismahdollisuuksia.

Les métaux lourds (ML) s’accumulent de plus en plus dans les sols à l’échelle mondiale, d’une part à cause des engrais minéraux et divers produits chimiques utilisés en agriculture intensive, et d’autre part à cause des activités industrielles. Toutes ces activités génèrent des déchets toxiques qui s’accumulent dans l’environnement. Les ML ne sont pas biodégradables et leur accumulation cause donc des problèmes de toxicité des sols et affecte la biodiversité des microorganismes qui y vivent. La fertilisation en azote (N) est une pratique courante en agriculture à grande échelle qui permet d’augmenter la fertilité des sols et la productivité des cultures. Cependant, son utilisation à long terme cause plusieurs effets néfastes pour l'environnement. Par exemple, elle augmente la quantité des ML dans les sols, les nappes phréatiques et les plantes. En outre, ces effets néfastes réduisent et changent considérablement la biodiversité des écosystèmes terrestres. La structure des communautés des champignons mycorhiziens à arbuscules (CMA) a été étudiée dans des sols contaminés par des ML issus de la fertilisation à long terme en N. Le rôle des différentes espèces de CMA dans l'absorption et la séquestration des ML a été aussi investigué. Dans une première expérience, la structure des communautés de CMA a été analysée à partir d’échantillons de sols de sites contaminés par des ML et de sites témoins non-contaminés. Nous avons constaté que la diversité des CMA indigènes a été plus faible dans les sols et les racines des plantes récoltées à partir de sites contaminés par rapport aux sites noncontaminés. Nous avons également constaté que la structure de la communauté d'AMF a été modifiée par la présence des ML dans les sols. Certains ribotypes des CMA ont été plus souvent associés aux sites contaminés, alors que d’autres ribotypes ont été associés aux sites non-contaminés. Cependant, certains ribotypes ont été observés aussi bien dans les sols pollués que non-pollués. Dans une deuxième expérience, les effets de la fertilisation organique et minérale (N) sur les différentes structures des communautés des CMA ont été étudiés. La variation de la structure de la communauté de CMA colonisant les racines a été analysée en fonction du type de fertilisation. Certains ribotypes de CMA étaient associés à la fertilisation organique et d'autres à la fertilisation minérale. En revanche, la fertilisation minérale a réduit le nombre de ribotypes de CMA alors que la fertilisation organique l’a augmenté. Dans cette expérience, j’ai démontré que le changement de structure des communautés de CMA colonisant des racines a eu un effet significatif sur la productivité des plantes. Dans une troisième expérience, le rôle de deux espèces de CMA (Glomus irregulare et G. mosseae) dans l'absorption du cadmium (Cd) par des plants de tournesol cultivés dans des sols amendés avec trois niveaux différents de Cd a été évalué. J’ai démontré que les deux espèces de CMA affectent différemment l’absorption ou la séquestration de ce ML par les plants de tournesol. Cette expérience a permis de mieux comprendre le rôle potentiel des CMA dans l'absorption des ML selon la concentration de cadmium dans le sol et les espèces de CMA. Mes recherches de doctorat démontrent donc que la fertilisation en N affecte la structure des communautés des CMA dans les racines et le sol. Le changement de structure de la communauté de CMA colonisant les racines affecte de manière significative la productivité des plantes. J’ai aussi démontré que, sous nos conditions expériemntales, l’espèce de CMA G. irregulare a été observée dans tous les sites (pollués et non-pollués), tandis que le G. mosseae n’a été observé en abondance que dans les sites contaminés. Par conséquent, j’ai étudié le rôle de ces deux espèces (G. irregulare et G. mosseae) dans l'absorption du Cd par le tournesol cultivé dans des sols amendés avec trois différents niveaux de Cd en serre. Les résultats indiquent que les espèces de CMA ont un potentiel différent pour atténuer la toxicité des ML dans les plantes hôtes, selon le niveau de concentration en Cd. En conclusion, mes travaux suggèrent que le G. irregulare est une espèce potentiellement importante pour la phytoextration du Cd, alors que le G. mosseae pourrait être une espèce appropriée pour phytostabilisation du Cd et du Zn.

The objective of this research is to study the feasibility of bioremediating the oily sludge from a refinery site. Three different methods of waste treatment were tried i.e. phytoremediation, land farming and microbial enhanced oil separation in laboratory scale treatment systems. A multiprocess approach by combination of phytoremediation, biostimulation and microbial enhanced oil separation is also presented. The methods of analysis, experimental procedure, and results are incorporated into five chapters of this thesis entitled "Bioremediation of petroleum sludge through phytoremediation, land farming and microbial enhanced oil separation.

One of the objectives of the current investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of Spirodela polyrhiza to remove heavy metals and other contaminants from the water samples collected from wetland sites of Eloor and Kannamaly under controlled conditions .The results obtained from the current study suggest that the test material S. polyrrhiza should be used in the biomonitoring and phytoremediation of municipal, agricultural and industrial effluents because of their simplicity, sensitivity and cost-effectiveness. The study throws light on the potential of this plant which can be used as an assessment tool in two diverse wetland in Ernakulum district. The results show the usefulness of combining physicochemical analysis with bioassays as such approach ensures better understanding of the toxicity of chemical pollutants and their influence on plant health. The results shows the suitability of Spirodela plant for surface water quality assessment as all selected parameters showed consistency with respect to water samples collected over a 3-monitoring periods. Similarly the relationship between the change in exposure period (2, 4 and 8 days) with the parameters were also studied in detail. Spirodela are consistent test material as they are homogeneous plant material; due to predominantly vegetative reproduction. New fronds are formed by clonal propagation thus, producing a population of genetically homogeneous plants. The result is small variability between treated individuals. It has been observed that phytoremediation of water samples collected from Eloor and Kannamaly using the floating plant system is a predominant method which is economic to construct, requires little maintenance and eco friendly.

Para verificar a toxidez e o quadro clínico e patológico da intoxicação por Dodonea viscosa em bovinos, a planta foi administrada para cinco bovinos onde quatro receberam folhas verdes e um recebeu folhas secas. Quatro dos bovinos que receberam as folhas verdes e seca apresentaram sinais clínicos e morreram. Um bovino não adoeceu e nem morreu. A planta mostrou-se tóxica a partir de 25g/kg de peso vivo. As folhas secas fornecidas na dose de 30g/kg mantiveram a toxidez. O menor período de evolução clínica nos que morreram foi de 3 horas e o maior foi de 19 horas.A evolução clínica foi cerca de 8,5h até a morte. O início dos sinais clínicos variou de 13 horas e 30 minutos a 45 horas. Os animais manifestaram apatia, anorexia, leve tenesmo, dificuldade para se manter em estação apoiando-se contra obstáculos, tremores musculares, decúbito esternal, movimentos de pedalagem, coma e morte. A alteração macroscópica mais significativa foi observada no fígado, que apresentava padrão lobular acentuado caracterizada por alternação de áreas vermelho-escuras,com o centro mais deprimido, intercaladas com áreas amarelo-claras conferindo ao órgão o aspecto de noz–moscada. Hemorragias petequiais foram encontradas em serosas de órgãos da cavidade abdominal e torácica e no intestino. A principal alteração microscópica foi observada no fígado que apresentou necrose coagulativa centrolobular ou massiva, associada à congestão e hemorragia.

Mercury (Hg) pollution is a global environmental problem. Numerous Hg-contaminated sites exist in the world and new techniques for remediation are urgently needed. Phytoremediation, use of plants to remove pollutants from the environment or to render them harmless, is considered as an environment-friendly method to remediate contaminated soil in-situ and has been applied for some other heavy metals. Whether this approach is suitable for remediation of Hg-contaminated soil is, however, an open question. The aim of this thesis was to study the fate of Hg in terrestrial plants (particularly the high biomass producing willow, Salix spp.) and thus to clarify the potential use of plants to remediate Hg-contaminated soils. Plants used for phytoremediation of Hg must tolerate Hg. A large variation (up to 30-fold difference) was detected among the six investigated clones of willow in their sensitivity to Hg as reflected in their empirical toxicity threshold (TT95b), the maximum unit toxicity (UTmax) and EC50 levels. This gives us a possibility to select Hg-tolerant willow clones to successfully grow in Hgcontaminated soils for phytoremediation. Release of Hg into air by plants is a concern when using phytoremediation in practice. No evidence was found in this study that Hg was released to the air via shoots of willow, garden pea (Pisum sativum L. cv Faenomen), spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv Dragon), sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L. cv Monohill), oil-seed rape (Brassica napus L. cv Paroll) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.). Thus, we conclude that the Hg burden to the atmosphere via phytoremediation is not increased. Phytoremediation processes are based on the ability of plant roots to accumulate Hg and to translocate it to the shoots. Willow roots were shown to be able to efficiently accumulate Hg in hydroponics, however, no variation in the ability to accumulate was found among the eight willow clones using CVAAS to analyze Hg content in plants. The majority of the Hg accumulated remained in the roots and only 0.5-0.6% of the Hg accumulation was translocated to the shoots. Similar results were found for the five common cultivated plant species mentioned above. Moreover, the accumulation of Hg in willow was higher when being cultivated in methyl-Hg solution than in inorganic Hg solution, whereas the translocation of Hg to the shoots did not differ. The low bioavailability of Hg in contaminated soil is a restricting factor for the phytoextraction of Hg. A selected tolerant willow clone was used to study whether iodide addition could increase the plant-accumulation of Hg from contaminated soil. Both pot tests and field trials were carried out. Potassium iodide (KI) addition was found to mobilize Hg in contaminated soil and thus increase the bioavailability of Hg in soils. Addition of KI (0.2–1 mM) increased the Hg concentrations up to about 5, 3 and 8 times in the leaves, branches and roots, respectively. However, too high concentrations of KI were toxic to plants. As the majority of the Hg accumulated in the roots, it might be unrealistic to use willow for phytoextraction of Hg in practice, even though iodide could enhance the phytoextraction efficiency. In order to study the effect of willow on various soil fractions of Hg-contaminated soil, a 5-step sequential soil extraction method was used. Both the largest Hg-contaminated fractions, i.e. the Hg bound to residual organic matter (53%) and sulphides (43%), and the residual fraction (2.5%), were found to remain stable during cultivations of willow. The exchangeable Hg (0.1%) and the Hg bound to humic and fulvic acids (1.1%) decreased in the rhizospheric soil, whereas the plant accumulation of Hg increased with the cultivation time. The sum of the decrease of the two Hg fractions in soils was approximately equal to the amount of the Hg accumulated in plants. Consequently, plants may be suitable for phytostabilization of aged Hg-contaminated soil, in which root systems trap the bioavailable Hg and reduce the leakage of Hg from contaminated soils.

Il presente lavoro di tesi è stato realizzato al fine di valutare la distribuzione geografica ed i livelli ambientali di concentrazione per una serie di metalli (Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, Mn, Co, V, Ba, Pb, Sr e Hg) presenti all’interno dei sedimenti della laguna costiera Pialassa Baiona, situata nei pressi del porto e dell’area industriale di Ravenna. L’area di studio considerata rappresenta un esempio di ambiente di transizione, dove i fattori fisici e chimici variano su scala spaziale e temporale e dove le attività antropiche, recenti e non, hanno provocato impatti significativi sullo stato di qualità dei sedimenti, delle acque e degli ecosistemi. Lo studio è stato progettato seguendo un disegno di campionamento ortogonale, che tiene conto del gradiente naturale terra-mare, tipico delle zone di transizione, e del gradiente antropico, legato alla vicinanza con l’area industriale. Sulla base di questo disegno sono state campionate 4 aree differenti e per ciascuna area sono stati scelti casualmente tre siti. La caratterizzazione dei sedimenti dal punto di vista chimico è stata effettuata determinando la frazione labile e quindi più biodisponibile dei metalli, oggetto del presente studio, per mezzo di una tecnica di estrazione parziale con HCl 1 M. Le concentrazioni biodisponibili ottenute sono state poi confrontate con il contenuto totale dei metalli, determinato mediante digestione totale al micronde. I sedimenti sono stati inoltre caratterizzati dal punto di vista granulometrico e del contenuto in sostanza organica (Loss on Ignition, LOI%). I risultati ottenuti dalle analisi chimiche sono stati confrontati con i valori tipi di fondo naturale del Mar Adriatico e con i valori guida di riferimento nazionale (SQA-MA) ed internazionale (ERL, ERM, TEL e PEL), al fine di valutare lo stato di qualità dei sedimenti della Baiona e di effettuare uno screening per individuare eventuali situazioni di rischio per gli organismi bentonici. I risultati ottenuti sono stati poi elaborati statisticamente con un analisi della varianza (ANOVA) con lo scopo di valutare la variabilità spaziale dei metalli nei campioni analizzati e la presenza di eventuali differenze significative.

This study focus on pathologies - caused by impoverished uranium and other heavy-metals’ nanoparticles environmental pollution - developed in international military personnel deployed in critical areas; the pathologies are then placed in a general and chronological schema. This study shows an impressive collection of data on impoverished uranium characteristics and its employment in civil and military context and a map of impoverished uranium most polluted areas. The studies on this subject commissioned by two Italian Parliamentary Court of Inquiry and by other nations are then analyzed. Further etiopathogenetic hypothesis are assessed – as multivaccination – comparing vaccination protocols adopted by different NATO nations and their possible effects. Finally the study defines the objectives and the operational protocols of an ongoing epidemiological serial prospective study (time-frame scheduled of 30 years) on military personnel deployed in critical areas for the possible presence of genotoxic agents.
