Space-time codes from complex orthogonal designs (CODs) with no zero entries offer low Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) and avoid the problem of switching off antennas. But square CODs for 2(a) antennas with a + 1. complex variables, with no zero entries were discovered only for a <= 3 and if a + 1 = 2(k), for k >= 4. In this paper, a method of obtaining no zero entry (NZE) square designs, called Complex Partial-Orthogonal Designs (CPODs), for 2(a+1) antennas whenever a certain type of NZE code exists for 2(a) antennas is presented. Then, starting from a so constructed NZE CPOD for n = 2(a+1) antennas, a construction procedure is given to obtain NZE CPODs for 2n antennas, successively. Compared to the CODs, CPODs have slightly more ML decoding complexity for rectangular QAM constellations and the same ML decoding complexity for other complex constellations. Using the recently constructed NZE CODs for 8 antennas our method leads to NZE CPODs for 16 antennas. The class of CPODs do not offer full-diversity for all complex constellations. For the NZE CPODs presented in the paper, conditions on the signal sets which will guarantee full-diversity are identified. Simulation results show that bit error performance of our codes is same as that of the CODs under average power constraint and superior to CODs under peak power constraint.

Dietary habits have changed during the past decades towards an increasing consumption of processed foods, which has notably increased not only total dietary phosphorus (P) intake, but also intake of P from phosphate additives. While the intake of calcium (Ca) in many Western countries remains below recommended levels (800 mg/d), the usual daily P intake in a typical Western diet exceeds by 2- to 3-fold the dietary guidelines (600 mg/d). The effects of high P intake in healthy humans have been investigated seldom. In this thesis healthy 20- to 43-year-old women were studied. In the first controlled study (n = 14), we examined the effects of P doses, and in a cross-sectional study (n = 147) the associations of habitual P intakes with Ca and bone metabolism. In this same cross-sectional study, we also investigated whether differences exist between dietary P originating from natural P sources and phosphate additives. The second controlled study (n = 12) investigated whether by increasing the Ca intake, the effects of a high P intake could be reduced. The associations of habitual dietary calcium-to-phosphorus ratios (Ca:P ratio) with Ca and bone metabolism were determined in a cross-sectional study design (n = 147). In the controlled study, the oral intake of P doses (495, 745, 1245 and 1995 mg/d) with a low Ca intake (250 mg/d) increased serum parathyroid hormone (S-PTH) concentration in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, the highest P dose decreased serum ionized calcium (S-iCa) concentration and bone formation and increased bone resorption. In the second controlled study with a dietary P intake of 1850 mg/d, by increasing the Ca intake from 480 mg/d to 1080 mg/d and then to 1680 mg/d, the S-PTH concentration decreased, the S-iCa concentration increased and bone resorption decreased dose-dependently. However, not even the highest Ca intake could counteract the effect of high dietary P on bone formation, as indicated by unchanged bone formation activity. In the cross-sectional studies, a higher habitual dietary P intake (>1650 mg/d) was associated with lower S-iCa and higher S-PTH concentrations. The consumption of phosphate additive-containing foods was associated with a higher S-PTH concentration. Moreover, habitual low dietary Ca:P ratios (≤0.50, molar ratio) were associated with higher S-PTH concentrations and 24-h urinary Ca excretions, suggesting that low dietary Ca:P ratios may interfere with homeostasis of Ca metabolism and increase bone resorption. In summary, excessive dietary P intake in healthy Finnish women seems to be detrimental to Ca and bone metabolism, especially when dietary Ca intake is low. The results indicate that by increasing dietary Ca intake to the recommended level, the negative effects of high P intake could be diminished, but not totally prevented. These findings imply that phosphate additives may be more harmful than natural P. Thus, reduction of an excessively high dietary P intake is also beneficial for healthy individuals.

"Extended Clifford algebras" are introduced as a means to obtain low ML decoding complexity space-time block codes. Using left regular matrix representations of two specific classes of extended Clifford algebras, two systematic algebraic constructions of full diversity Distributed Space-Time Codes (DSTCs) are provided for any power of two number of relays. The left regular matrix representation has been shown to naturally result in space-time codes meeting the additional constraints required for DSTCs. The DSTCs so constructed have the salient feature of reduced Maximum Likelihood (ML) decoding complexity. In particular, the ML decoding of these codes can be performed by applying the lattice decoder algorithm on a lattice of four times lesser dimension than what is required in general. Moreover these codes have a uniform distribution of power among the relays and in time, thus leading to a low Peak to Average Power Ratio at the relays.

Space-time codes from complex orthogonal designs (CODs) with no zero entries offer low Peak to Average power ratio (PAPR) and avoid the problem of turning off antennas. But CODs for 2(a) antennas with a + 1 complex variables, with no zero entries are not known in the literature for a >= 4. In this paper, a method of obtaining no zero entry (NZE) codes, called Complex Partial-Orthogonal Designs (CPODs), for 2(a+1) antennas whenever a certain type of NZE code exists for 2(a) antennas is presented. This is achieved with slight increase in the ML decoding complexity for regular QAM constellations and no increase for other complex constellations. Since NZE CODs have been constructed recently for 8 antennas our method leads to NZE CPODs for 16 antennas. Moreover, starting from certain NZE CPODs for n antennas, a construction procedure is given to obtain NZE CPODs for 2n antennas. Employing an error control code is one of the techniques to reduce the Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) in a Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing system, a well known class of such codes being the cosets of Reed-Muller codes. In this paper, we consider the class of such coset-codes of arbitrary linear codes and present a method of doubling the size of such a code without increasing the PAPR, by combining two such binary coset-codes. We identify the conditions under which we can employ this doubling more than once with no marginal increase in the PAPR value. Given a PAPR and length, our method has enabled to get the best coset-code (in terms of the size). Also, we show that the PAPR information of the coset-codes of the extended codes is obtainable from the PAPR of the corresponding coset-codes of the parent code. We have also shown a special type of lengthening is useful in PAPR studies.

It is known that in an OFDM system using Hadamard transform or phase alteration before the IDFT operation can reduce the Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR). Both these techniques can be viewed as constellation precoding for PAPR reduction. In general, using non-diagonal transforms, like Hadamard transform, increases the ML decoding complexity. In this paper we propose the use of block-IDFT matrices and show that appropriate block-IDFT matrices give lower PAPR as well as lower decoding complexity compared to using Hadamard transform. Moreover, we present a detailed study of the tradeoff between PAPR reduction and the ML decoding complexity when using block-IDFT matrices with various sizes of the blocks.

Use of precoding transforms such as Hadamard Transforms and Phase Alteration for Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) reduction in OFDM systems are well known. In this paper we propose use of Inverse Discrete Fourier Transform (IDFT) and Hadamard transform as precoding transforms in MIMO-OFDM systems to achieve low peak to average power ratio (PAPR). We show that while our approach using IDFT does not disturb the diversity gains of the MIMO-OFDM systems (spatial, temporal and frequency diversity gains), it offers a better trade-off between PAPR reduction and ML decoding complexity compared to that of the Hadamard transform precoding. We study in detail the amount of PAPR reduction achieved for the following two recently proposed full-diversity Space-Frequency coded MIMO-OFDM systems using both the IDFT and the Hadamard transform: (i) W. Su. Z. Safar, M. Olfat, K. J. R. Liu (IEEE Trans. on Signal Processing, Nov. 2003), and (ii) W. Su, Z. Safar, K. J. R. Liu (IEEE Trans. on Information Theory, Jan. 2005).

Space-time block codes based on orthogonal designs are used for wireless communications with multiple transmit antennas which can achieve full transmit diversity and have low decoding complexity. However, the rate of the square real/complex orthogonal designs tends to zero with increase in number of antennas, while it is possible to have a rate-1 real orthogonal design (ROD) for any number of antennas. In case of complex orthogonal designs (CODs), rate-1 codes exist only for 1 and 2 antennas. In general, For a transmit antennas, the maximal rate of a COD is 1/2 + l/n or 1/2 + 1/n+1 for n even or odd respectively. In this paper, we present a simple construction for maximal-rate CODs for any number of antennas from square CODs which resembles the construction of rate-1 RODs from square RODs. These designs are shown to be amenable for construction of a class of generalized CODs (called Coordinate-Interleaved Scaled CODs) with low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) having the same parameters as the maximal-rate codes. Simulation results indicate that these codes perform better than the existing maximal rate codes under peak power constraint while performing the same under average power constraint.

This paper describes the work related to characterisation of an ultrasonic transducer fabricated in the laboratory. The response of the medium to the ultrasonic wave was obtained by converting the time domain signal to frequency domain, using the FFT algorithm. Cross-correlation technique was adopted to increase the S/N ratio in the raw time domain signal and subsequently, to determine the ultrasonic velocity in the medium.

The maximal rate of a nonsquare complex orthogonal design for transmit antennas is 1/2 + 1/n if is even and 1/2 + 1/n+1 if is odd and the codes have been constructed for all by Liang (2003) and Lu et al. (2005) to achieve this rate. A lower bound on the decoding delay of maximal-rate complex orthogonal designs has been obtained by Adams et al. (2007) and it is observed that Liang's construction achieves the bound on delay for equal to 1 and 3 modulo 4 while Lu et al.'s construction achieves the bound for n = 0, 1, 3 mod 4. For n = 2 mod 4, Adams et al. (2010) have shown that the minimal decoding delay is twice the lower bound, in which case, both Liang's and Lu et al.'s construction achieve the minimum decoding delay. For large value of, it is observed that the rate is close to half and the decoding delay is very large. A class of rate-1/2 codes with low decoding delay for all has been constructed by Tarokh et al. (1999). In this paper, another class of rate-1/2 codes is constructed for all in which case the decoding delay is half the decoding delay of the rate-1/2 codes given by Tarokh et al. This is achieved by giving first a general construction of square real orthogonal designs which includes as special cases the well-known constructions of Adams, Lax, and Phillips and the construction of Geramita and Pullman, and then making use of it to obtain the desired rate-1/2 codes. For the case of nine transmit antennas, the proposed rate-1/2 code is shown to be of minimal delay. The proposed construction results in designs with zero entries which may have high peak-to-average power ratio and it is shown that by appropriate postmultiplication, a design with no zero entry can be obtained with no change in the code parameters.

Combustion instability events in lean premixed combustion systems can cause spatio-temporal variations in unburnt mixture fuel/air ratio. This provides a driving mechanism for heat-release oscillations when they interact with the flame. Several Reduced Order Modelling (ROM) approaches to predict the characteristics of these oscillations have been developed in the past. The present paper compares results for flame describing function characteristics determined from a ROM approach based on the level-set method, with corresponding results from detailed, fully compressible reacting flow computations for the same two dimensional slot flame configuration. The comparison between these results is seen to be sensitive to small geometric differences in the shape of the nominally steady flame used in the two computations. When the results are corrected to account for these differences, describing function magnitudes are well predicted for frequencies lesser than and greater than a lower and upper cutoff respectively due to amplification of flame surface wrinkling by the convective Darrieus-Landau (DL) instability. However, good agreement in describing function phase predictions is seen as the ROM captures the transit time of wrinkles through the flame correctly. Also, good agreement is seen for both magnitude and phase of the flame response, for large forcing amplitudes, at frequencies where the DL instability has a minimal influence. Thus, the present ROM can predict flame response as long as the DL instability, caused by gas expansion at the flame front, does not significantly alter flame front perturbation amplitudes as they traverse the flame. Spatial modulation (SM) and space shift keying (SSK) are relatively new modulation techniques which are attractive in multi-antenna communications. Single carrier (SC) systems can avoid the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) problem encountered in multicarrier systems. In this paper, we study SM and SSK signaling in cyclic-prefixed SC (CPSC) systems on MIMO-ISI channels. We present a diversity analysis of MIMO-CPSC systems under SSK and SM signaling. Our analysis shows that the diversity order achieved by (n(t), n(r)) SSK scheme and (n(t), n(r), Theta(M)) SM scheme in MIMO-CPSC systems under maximum-likelihood (ML) detection is n(r), where n(t), n(r) denote the number of transmit and receive antennas and Theta(M) denotes the modulation alphabet of size M. Bit error rate (BER) simulation results validate this predicted diversity order. Simulation results also show that MIMO-CPSC with SM and SSK achieves much better performance than MIMO-OFDM with SM and SSK.

Single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) has become a popular alternative to orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) in multiuser communication on the uplink. This is mainly due to the low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of SC-FDMA compared to that of OFDMA. Long-term evolution (LTE) uses SC-FDMA on the uplink to exploit this PAPR advantage to reduce transmit power amplifier backoff in user terminals. In this paper, we show that SC-FDMA can be beneficially used for multiuser communication on the downlink as well. We present SC-FDMA transmit and receive signaling architectures for multiuser communication on the downlink. The benefits of using SC-FDMA on the downlink are that SC-FDMA can achieve i) significantly better bit error rate (BER) performance at the user terminal compared to OFDMA, and ii) improved PAPR compared to OFDMA which reduces base station (BS) power amplifier backoff (making BSs more green). SC-FDMA receiver needs to do joint equalization, which can be carried out using low complexity equalization techniques. For this, we present a local neighborhood search based equalization algorithm for SC-FDMA. This algorithm is very attractive both in complexity as well as performance. We present simulation results that establish the PAPR and BER performance advantage of SC-FDMA over OFDMA in multiuser SISO/MIMO downlink as well as in large-scale multiuser MISO downlink with tens to hundreds of antennas at the BS.
