To date, the only Southern Hemisphere eolian grain-size record constructed for the early Paleogene comes from Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 215. Ten early Paleogene sediment samples from Site 215 were collected and processed to show that the existing eolian grain-size record at this site can be reproduced. Five samples each from Ocean Drilling Program Sites 1263 and 1267 were similarly examined to test the possibility of generating new Southern Hemisphere eolian grain-size records for the early Paleogene. Our results indicate that an eolian grain-size signal can be constructed at Walvis Ridge, although the record will be complicated by hemipelagic terrigenous inputs. Further, we assert that a record generated at a site located on the deep flanks of Walvis Ridge is particularly susceptible to hemipelagic influence.

An essentially complete Paleogene record was recovered on the Central and Southern Kerguelen plateaus (55°-59°S) in a calcareous biofacies. Recovery deteriorated in the middle Eocene and down to the upper Paleocene because of the presence of interbedded cherts and chalks. The stratigraphic distribution of about 70 taxa of planktonic foraminifers recovered at Sites 747-749 is reported in this paper. Faunas exhibited fairly high diversity (approximately 20-25 species) in the early Eocene, followed by a gradual reduction in diversity in the middle Eocene. A brief incursion of tropical keeled morozovellids occurred near the Paleocene/Eocene boundary, similar to that recorded on the Maud Rise (ODP Sites 689 and 690). The high-latitude Paleogene zonal scheme developed for ODP Leg 113 sites has been adopted (with minor modifications) for the lower Eocene-Oligocene part of the Kerguelen Plateau record. A representative Oligocene (polarity chronozones 7-13) and late Eocene-late middle Eocene (questionably polarity chronozones 16-18) magnetostratigraphic record has allowed the calibration of several biostratigraphic datum levels to the standard Global Polarity Time Scale (GPTS) and established their essential synchrony between low and high latitudes.

Perylene is present in high concentration in Paleogene sediments from the Sanriku-oki borehole of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), northeastern Japan. The borehole penetrates a thick sequence of Late Cretaceous to Neogene sediments deposited under a range of conditions, including fluvial-deltaic and shallow marine. Organic petrological and geochemical data show the sediments to be rich in organic matter (OM) derived from higher plants. Biomarker analysis of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons confirms a significant input from higher plants, with extracts dominated by numerous gymnosperm- and angiosperm-derived biomarkers such as diterpanes, oleanenes, des-A-triterpanes and their aromatized counterparts. The highest concentration of perylene occurs in Middle Eocene sediments deposited in a relatively reducing environment. Stable carbon isotope compositions show 13C enrichment in perylene compared to gymnosperm and angiosperm biomarkers, consistent with a fungal origin. This elevated abundance of sedimentary perylene could relate to a Paleogene continental climate where fungi probably flourished.

Benthic foraminifers were studied from lower Paleocene through upper Oligocene sections from Sites 747 and 748. The composition of the benthic foraminifer species suggests a middle to lower bathyal (600-2000 m) paleodepth during the Neogene and a probable upper abyssal (2000-3000 m) paleodepth during the Paleocene at Site 747. Site 748 is thought to have remained at middle to lower bathyal paleodepths throughout the Cenozoic. Principal component analysis distinguished four major benthic foraminifer assemblages: (1) a Paleocene Stensioina beccariiformis assemblage at Sites 747 and 748, (2) an early Eocene Nuttallides truempyi assemblage at lower bathyal Site 747, (3) an early through middle Eocene Stilostomella-Lenticulina assemblage at middle bathyal Site 748, and (4) a latest Eocene through Oligocene Cibicidoides-Astrononion pusillum assemblage at both sites. Major benthic foraminifer changes, as indicated by the principal components and first and last appearances, occurred at or close to the Paleocene/Eocene boundary, and in the late Eocene close to the middle/late Eocene boundary.

Oxygen and carbon isotopic records of monogeneric and monospecific benthic and planktonic foraminifer samples from Sites 744 and 738 drilled on the southern end of the Kerguelen Plateau during ODP Leg 119 reveal the evolution of polar Indian Ocean water masses from the early Paleocene to the middle Miocene. Results from Site 738 are from sediments of early Paleocene to late Eocene age and those from Site 744 are late Eocene to middle Miocene. They suggest that intermediate waters at this location did not originate in the high latitudes during the early Eocene. Surface and near-surface waters cooled gradually after the maximum warming at 56 Ma, when surface waters were about 18°C. Intermediate waters cooled after 52 Ma. The highest temperatures (lowest d18O values) of the Cenozoic occurred from 56 to 52 Ma. The records of equatorial Pacific Site 577 and Weddell Sea Site 690 resemble that of the polar Indian Ocean in this interval. The well-documented d13C excursions toward positive values in the late Paleocene and negative values in the early Eocene are represented by foraminifers increases of 1.5 per mil and following decreases of about 3 per mil. Most of the cooling in the Paleogene occurred in the middle and late Eocene. A 2°C decrease of surface water at about 38.4 Ma heralded the beginning of extensive glacial conditions in Antarctica in the early Oligocene. At Site 744, the global d18O shift just above the Eocene/Oligocene boundary is 1.15 per mil, and occurred gradually in sediments dated at 36.5-35.9 Ma. Ice-rafted debris was deposited beginning at 36.1 Ma for about the next 2 m.y. This simultaneous occurrence of the global d18O shift with ice-rafted debris is evidence for early Oligocene glaciation in East Antarctica. Moreover, early and late Oligocene Cibicidoides d18O values between 2 and 2.2 per mil indicate intermediate water cooling and a small ice-volume effect. Production of cold dense bottom water in Antarctica was intensified with continental cooling and glaciation in the early Oligocene. Comparison of Oligocene and early Miocene isotopic data from high-latitude and low-latitude deepsea sites indicates that there were probably at least two sources of bottom waters at this time.

Marine biological productivity has been invoked as a possible climate driver during the early Paleogene through its potential influence on atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. However, the relationship of export productivity (the flux of organic carbon (C) from the surface ocean to the deep ocean) to organic C burial flux (the flux of organic C from the deep ocean that is buried in marine sediments) is not well understood. We examine the various components involved with atmosphere-to-ocean C transfer by reconstructing early Paleogene carbonate and silica production (using carbonate and silica mass accumulation rates (MARs)); export productivity (using biogenic barium (bio-Ba) MARs); organic C burial flux (using reactive phosphorus (P) MARs); redox conditions (using uranium and manganese contents); and the fraction of organic C buried relative to export productivity (using reactive P to bio-Ba ratios). Our investigations concentrate on Paleocene/Eocene sections of Sites 689/690 from Maud Rise and Site 738 from Kerguelen Plateau. In both regions, export productivity, organic C burial flux, and the fraction of organic C buried relative to export productivity decreased from the Paleocene/early Eocene to the middle Eocene. A shift is indicated from an early Paleogene two-gyre circulation in which nutrients were not efficiently recycled to the surface via upwelling in these regions, to a circulation more like the present day with efficient recycling of nutrients to the surface ocean. Export productivity was enhanced for Kerguelen Plateau relative to Maud Rise throughout the early Paleogene, possibly due to internal waves generated by the plateau regardless of gyre circulation.

Sediments from ODP Holes 699A, 700B, 702B, 703A, and 704B were studied in order to determine and to understand the distribution of Bolboforma. Ten Bolboforma taxa were detected in the 294 samples analyzed. Based on Bolboforma species, a zonation correlated to the paleomagnetic record is proposed for the late middle Eocene to early Oligocene. Four biozones can be defined: the Bolboforma indistincta Zone for the lower part of the upper middle Eocene sequence, the Bolboforma eocena Zone for the upper part of the upper middle Eocene to upper Eocene, the Bolboforma geomaris Zone for the upper Eocene, and the Bolboforma latdorfensis Zone for the lower Oligocene sequence.

This contribution summarizes the biostratigraphy of planktonic foraminifers, calcareous nannofossils, and benthic foraminifers, in combination with the magnetostratigraphy, carbon and oxygen isotope stratigraphy of benthic foraminifers, and CaCO3 stratigraphy for the Maestrichtian through Paleogene calcareous sequences recovered at Sites 689 and 690 on Maud Rise (at about 65°S, eastern Weddell Sea, Antarctica). These data represent the southernmost calciumcarbonate record available for that interval, and thus extend the biostratigraphic and isotopic database to higher latitudes. Sites 689 and 690 form the southernmost anchor of a north-south transect through the Atlantic Ocean for Paleogene biostratigraphy and chemostratigraphy.
