Isothermal crystallization kinetics in the melting of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) were investigated as a function of the shear rate and crystallization temperature by optical microscopy. The radial growth rates of the spherulites are described by a kinetics equation including shearing and relaxation combined effects and the free energy for the formation of a secondary crystal nucleus. The free-energy difference between the liquid and crystalline phases increased slightly with rising shearing rates. The experimental findings showed that the influence of the relaxation of PEO, which is related to the shear-induced orientation and stretch in a PEO melt, on the rate of crystallization predominated over the influence of the shearing. This indicated that the relaxation of PEO should be more important so that the growth rates increase with shearing, but it was nearly independent of the shear rate within the measured experimental range.

A novel structural triblock copolymer of poly(gamma-benzyl-L-glutamic acid)-b-poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PBLG-PEO-PCL) was synthesized by a new approach in the following three steps: (1) sequential anionic ring opening polymerization (ROP) of ethylene oxide and epsilon-caprolactone with an acetonitrile/potassium naphthalene initiator system to obtain a diblock copolymer CN-PEO-PCL with a cyano end-group; (2) conversion of the CN end-group into NH2 end-group by hydrogenation to obtain NH2-PEO-PCL; (3) ROP of gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate-N-carboxyanhydrides (Bz-L-GluNCA) with NH2-PEO-PCL as macroinitiator to obtain the target triblock copolymer. The structures from CN-PEO precursor to the triblock copolymers were confirmed by FT-IR and H-1 NMR spectroscopy, and their molecular weights were measured by gel permeation chromatography. The monomer of Bz-L-GluNCA can react almost quantitatively with the amino end-groups of NH2-PEO-PCL macroinitiator by ROP.

Biodegradable, amphiphilic, four-armed poly(epsilon-caprolactone)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PCL-b-PEO) copolymers were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of ethylene oxide in the presence of four-armed poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) with terminal OH groups with diethylzinc (ZnEt2) as a catalyst. The chemical structure of PCL-b-PEO copolymer was confirmed by H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR. The hydroxyl end groups of the four-armed PC L were successfully substituted by PEO blocks in the copolymer. The monomodal profile of molecular weight distribution by gel permeation chromatography provided further evidence for the four-armed architecture of the copolymer. Physicochemical properties of the four-armed block copolymers differed from their starting four-armed PCL precursor. The melting points were between those of PCL precursor and linear poly(ethylene glycol). The length of the outer PEO blocks exhibited an obvious effect on the crystallizability of the block copolymer. The degree of swelling of the four-armed block copolymer increased with PEO length and PEO content.

The crystallization behavior and morphology of the crystalline-crystalline poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) diblock copolymer (PEO-b-PCL) was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and hot-stage polarized optical microscope (POM). The mutual effects between the PEO and PCL blocks were significant, leading to the obvious composition dependence of the crystallization behavior and morphology of PEO-b-PCL. In this study, the PEO block length was fixed (M-n = 5000) and the weight ratio of PCL/PEO was tailored by changing the PCL block length. Both blocks could crystallize in PEO-b-PCL with the PCL weight fraction (WFPCL) of 0.23-0.87. For the sample with the WFPCL of 0.36 or less, the PEO block crystallized first, resulting in the obvious confinement of the PCL block and vice versa for the sample with WFPCL of 0.43 or more. With increasing WFPCL, the crystallinity of PEO reduced continuously while the variation of the PCL crystallinity exhibited a maximum. The long period of PEO-b-PCL increased with increasing WFPCL from 0.16 to 0.50 but then decreased with the further increase of WFPCL due to the interaction of the respective variation of the thicknesses of the PEO and PCL crystalline lamellae.

Thiophene copolymers and their derivatives with poly(ethylene oxide) side chains were synthesized. The starting monomers were 3-hexylthiophene and 2-(3-thienyl) ethanol with poly(ethylene oxide) grafted to the side chains. New functionalized polythiophenes were prepared by both chemical oxidation with FeCl3 and electropolymerization. The conjugating polymers were characterized. The structures of the polythiophene derivatives agreed with the design.

The isothermal crystallization kinetics of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) block in two poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)-PEO segmented copolymers was studied with differential scanning calorimetry. The Avrami equation failed to describe the overall crystallization process, but a modified Avrami equation, the Q equation, did. The crystallizability of the PET block and the different lengths of the PEO block exerted strong influences on the crystallization process, the crystallinity, and time final morphology of the PEO block. The mechanism of nucleation and the growth dimension of the PEG block were different because of the crystallizability of time PET block and the compositional heterogeneity. The crystallization of the PEO block was physically constrained by the microstructure of time PET crystalline phase, which resulted in a lower crystallization rate. However, this influence became weak with the increase in the soft-block length. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The miscibility and crystallization behavior of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(p-vinylphenol) (PVPh) blends were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and optical microscopy (OM). The blends exhibit a single composition-dependent glass transition temperature, characteristic of miscible systems, A depression of the equilibrium melting temperature of PHB is observed. The interaction parameter values obtained from analysis of the melting point depression are of large negative values, which suggests that PHB and PVPh blends are thermodynamically miscible in the melt. Isothermal crystallization kinetics in the miscible blend system PHB/PVPh was examined by OM. The presence of the amorphous PVPh component results in a reduction in the rate of spherulite growth of PHB. The spherulite growth rate is analyzed using the Lauritzen-Hoffman model, The isothermally crystallized blends of PHB/PVPh were examined by wide-angle X-ray diffraction and smell-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The long period obtained from SAXS increases with the increase in PVPh component, which implies that the amorphous PVPh is squeezed into the interlamallar region of PHB.

The nonisothermal crystallization behavior and melting process of the poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEG) diblock copolymer in which the weight fraction of the PCL block is 0.80 has been studied by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Only the PCL block is crystallizable, the PEO block with 0.20 weight fraction cannot crystallize. The kinetics of the PCL/PEO diblock copolymer under nonisothermal crystallization conditions has been analyzed by Ozawa's equation. The experimental data shows no agreement with Ozawa's theoretical predictions in the whole crystallization process, especially in the later stage. A parameter, kinetic crystallinity, is used to characterize the crystallizability of the PCL/PEO diblock copolymer. The amorphous and microphase separating PEO block has a great influence on the crystallization of the PCL block. It bonds chemically with the PCL block, reduces crystallization entropy, and provides nucleating sites for the PCL block crystallization. The existence of the PEO block leads to the occurrence of the two melting peaks of the PCL/PEO diblock copolymer during melting process after nonisothermal crystallization. The comparison of nonisothermal crystallization of the PCL/PEO diblock copolymer, PCL/PEO blend, and PCL and PEO homopolymers has been made. It showed a lower crystallinity of the PCL/PEO diblock copolymer than that of others and a faster crystallization rate of the PCL/PEO diblock copolymer than that of the PCL homopolymer, but a slower crystallization rate than that of the PCL/PEO blend. The isothermal crystallization and melting behavior of the poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL)/poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO) diblock copolymer has been studied by WAXD, SAXS, and DSC methods. Only the PCL block is crystallizable; the PEO block of weight fraction 20% cannot crystallize, although its corresponding homopolymer has strong crystallizability. The long period, amorphous layer, and crystalline lamella of the PCL/PEO block copolymer all increase with the rise in the crystallization temperature, and the thickness of the amorphous layer is much larger than that of crystalline lamella due to the existence of the PEO block in the amorphous region. The isothermal crystallization of the PCL/PEO block copolymer is investigated by using the theory of Turnbull and Fischer. It is found that the amorphous PEO block has a great influence on the nucleation of PCL block crystallization, and the extent of this influence depends on crystallization conditions, especially temperature. The outstanding characteristics are the phenomenon of the double melting peaks in the melting process of the PCL/PEO block copolymer after isothermal crystallization at different temperatures and the transformation of melting peaks from double peaks to a single peak with variations in the crystallization condition. They are related mainly to the existence of the PEO block bonding chemically with the PCL block. In summing up results of investigations into the crystallization and melting behavior of the PCL/PEO block copolymer, it is interesting to notice that when the PCL/PEO block copolymer crystallizes at three different crystallization temperatures, i.e., below 0 degrees C, between 0 and 35 degrees C, and above 35 degrees C, the variation of peak melting temperature is similar to that of overall crystallization rates in the process of isothermal crystallization. The results can be elucidated by the effect of the PEO block on the crystallization of the PCL block, especially its nucleation. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Impedance study was carried out for the interfaces between lithium, polyaniline (PAn), lithium-doped MnO2 and modified poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) electrolyte under various' conditions. The interfacial charge-transfer resistances R(ct) on PEO/PAn, R(ct) on PEO/LiMn2O4 increase with depth-of-discharge and decrease after the charge of the cell containing modified PEO as electrolyte. The charge-transfer resistance R(ct) on PEO/PAn is higher than R(ct) on PEO/LiMn2O4 under the same condition, since inserted species and mechanism are different for both cases. In the case of PAn, an additional charge-transfer resistance might be related to the electronic conductivity change in discharge/charge potential range, as it was evident from a voltammetry curve. With increasing cycle numbers, the charge-transfer resistance increases gradually. The impedance results also have shown that at low frequency the diffusion control is dominant in the process of the charge and discharge of Li/PEO/PAn or Li/PEO/LiMn2O4 cell. The diffusion coefficients have been calculated from impedance data.

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) is one of the most researched synthetic polymers due to the complex behavior which arises from the interplay of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic sites on the polymer chain. PEO in ethanol forms an opaque gel-like mixture with a partially crystalline structure. Addition of a small amount of water disrupts the gel: 5 wt % PEO in ethanol becomes a transparent solution with the addition of 4 vol % water. The phase behavior of PEO in mixed solvents have been studied using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). PEO solutions (5 wt % PEO) which contain 4 vol % - 10 vol % (and higher) water behave as an athermal polymer solution and the phase behavior changes from UCST to LCST rapidly as the fraction of water is increased. 2 wt % PEO in water and 10 wt % PEO in ethanol/ water mixtures are examined to assess the role of hydration. The observed phase behavior is consistent with a hydration layer forming upon the addition of water as the system shifts from UCST to LCST behavior. At the molecular level, two or three water molecules can hydrate one PEO monomer (water molecules form a sheath around the PEO macromolecule) which is consistent with the suppression of crystallization and change in the mentioned phase behavior as observed by SANS. The clustering effect of aqueous PEO solution (M.W of PEO = 90,000 g/mol) is monitored as an excess scattering intensity at low-Q. Clustering intensity at Q = 0.004 Å^-1 is used for evaluating the clustering effect. The clustering intensity is proportional to the inverse temperature and levels off when the temperature is less than 50 ˚C. When the temperature is increased over 50 ˚C, the clustering intensity starts decreasing. The clustering of PEO is monitored in ethanol/ water mixtures. The clustering intensity increases as the fraction of water is increased. Based on the solvation intensity behavior, we confirmed that the ethanol/ water mixtures obey a random solvent mixing rule, whereby solvent mixtures are better at solvating the polymer that any of the two solvents. The solution behavior of PEO in ethanol was investigated in the presence of salt (CaCl2) using SANS. Binding of Ca2+ ions to the PEO oxygens transforms the neutral polymer to a weakly charged polyelectrolyte. We observed that the PEO/ethanol solution is better solvated at higher salt concentration due to the electrostatic repulsion of weakly charged monomers. The association of the Ca2+ ions with the PEO oxygen atoms transforms the neutral polymer to a weakly charged polyelectrolyte and gives rise to repulsive interactions between the PEO/Ca2+ complexes. Addition of salt disrupts the gel, which is consistent with better solvation as the salt concentration is increased. Moreover, SANS shows that the phase behavior of PEO/ethanol changes from UCST to LCST as the salt concentration is increased.

In this article, we have prepared hot-melt-extruded solid dispersions of bicalutamide (BL) using poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as a matrix platform. Prior to preparation, miscibility of PEO and BL was assessed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The onset of BL melting was signi?cantly depressed in the presence of PEO, and using Flory– Huggins (FH) theory, we identi?ed a negative value of -3.4, con?rming miscibility. Additionally, using FH lattice theory, we estimated the Gibbs free energy of mixing which was shown to be negative, passing through a minimum at a polymer fraction of 0.55. Using these data, solid dispersions at drug-to-polymer ratios of 1:10, 2:10 and 3:10 were prepared via hot-melt extrusion. Using a combination of DSC, powder X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron
microscopy, amorphous dispersions of BL were con?rmed at the lower two drug loadings. At the 3:10 BL to PEO ratio, crystalline BL was detected. The percent crystallinity of PEO was reduced by approximately 10% in all formulations following extrusion. The increased amorphous content within PEO following extrusion accommodated amorphous BL at drug to polymer loadings up to 2:10; however, the increased amorphous domains with PEO following extrusion were not suf?cient to fully accommodate BL at drug-to-polymer ratios of 3:10.

Carbenes photogenerated from the novel bisdiazirine, 1, 3-bis(3-(trifluoromethyl)diazirin-3-yl) benzene 1, have been applied successfully to cross-linking of mono-methyl poly(ethylene oxide) (MePEO5000) in the presence of dichloromethane, leading to the simultaneous incorporation of alkylhalide functionalities. The PEO-based gels swell in a wide range of solvents with polarity index values varying from 3.1 to 9.0. Reaction of the alkylhalide functionalities present in the gels with 4-phenylazophenol provided loading capacities of up to 0.20 mmol g(-1) and demonstrated the potential of these materials for gel-phase synthesis applications. The phase diagram of a series of poly(1,2-octylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (POO-PEO) diblock copolymers is determined by small-angle X-ray scattering. The Flory-Huggins interaction parameter was measured by small-angle neutron scattering. The phase diagram is highly asymmetric due to large conformational asymmetry that results from the hexyl side chains in the POO block. Non-lamellar phases (hexagonal and gyroid) are observed near f(PEO) = 0.5, and the lamellar phase is observed for f(PEO) >= 0.5.
