In the present work we investigated the electrochemical behavior of PVA on polycrystalline Pt and single-crystal Pt electrodes. PVA hampered the characteristic hydrogen UPD and anion adsorption on all investigated surfaces, with the processes on Pt(110) being the most affected by the PVA presence. Several oxidation waves appeared as the potential was swept in the positive direction and the Pt(111) was found to be the most active for the oxidation processes. Currently diverse industries have high pollution potential because their productive processes generate great volumes of refractory effluents. These effluents are problematic, mainly due to the presence of recalcitrant compounds that are detrimental in wastewater treatment plants using biological systems in their processes. In general, biological treatments do not remove refractory elements. Also, in most cases these compounds can inhibit the yield or are toxic for biota responsible to remove the polluting agents. The Advanced Oxidative Processes (AOPs) represent a technological alternative with a great potential for treatment of no biodegradable effluents. In this paper a review of the use of advanced oxidatives processes: Ozone (O(3)), peroxide of hydrogen (H(2)O(2)) and ultraviolet radiation (UV) is presented applied to the treatment of recalcitrant effluents.

Recent studies have shown that partial oxidation by advanced oxidation processes (AOP) is able to transform hard-to-degrade compounds and increase their biodegradability. In this work, anaerobic treatment was followed by ozonation, UV radiation and ozonation in the presence of UV radiation, to treat bleaching effluents from a cellulose kraft Pulp plant. The anaerobic reactor (horizontal anaerobic immobilized Sludge bed, HAISB) was Used as a pretreatment to reduce the efficient organic load before applying ACIP. The ozone treatments were applied in three different pH environments (3, 8 and 10) with retention times of 10, 30, 45 and 60 min. COD and adsorbable organic halogens (AOX) removal efficiencies at the HAISB were approximately 50%, while the BOD removal efficiency reached 80%. Ozonation promoted further removal of AOX and COD so that the combined efficiency reached 96% for AOX and 70% for COD. In the oxidation process, BOD was either removed in small quantities or actually increased, as intended, so that a second biological treatment would be able to complete the treatment. The maximum increase in the BOD(5)/COD ratio (biodegradability indicator) Occurred at pH 8, reaching 104% for ozonation at a dosage of 1540 mg(O3).L(-1). Applying UV radiation alone resulted in lower values: a 34% increase ill the BOD(5)/COD ratio and a 76% AOX removal efficiency. These results indicate that the combination of anaerobic treatment with ozonation or ozonation/UV radiation improves the treatability of cellulose pulp bleaching efficients and that the resulting wastewater is suitable for further biological treatment under aerobic conditions with a low level of toxic compounds from the halogenated family.

Oxidation processes can be used to treat industrial wastewater containing non-biodegradable organic compounds. However, the presence of dissolved salts may inhibit or retard the treatment process. In this study, wastewater desalination by electrodialysis (ED) associated with an advanced oxidation process (photo-Fenton) was applied to an aqueous NaCl solution containing phenol. The influence of process variables on the demineralization factor was investigated for ED in pilot scale and a correlation was obtained between the phenol, salt and water fluxes with the driving force. The oxidation process was investigated in a laboratory batch reactor and a model based on artificial neural networks was developed by fitting the experimental data describing the reaction rate as a function of the input variables. With the experimental parameters of both processes, a dynamic model was developed for ED and a continuous model, using a plug flow reactor approach, for the oxidation process. Finally, the hybrid model simulation could validate different scenarios of the integrated system and can be used for process optimization.

The objective of this paper is to develop and validate a mechanistic model for the degradation of phenol by the Fenton process. Experiments were performed in semi-batch operation, in which phenol, catechol and hydroquinone concentrations were measured. Using the methodology described in Pontes and Pinto [R.F.F. Pontes, J.M. Pinto, Analysis of integrated kinetic and flow models for anaerobic digesters, Chemical Engineering journal 122 (1-2) (2006) 65-80], a stoichiometric model was first developed, with 53 reactions and 26 compounds, followed by the corresponding kinetic model. Sensitivity analysis was performed to determine the most influential kinetic parameters of the model that were estimated with the obtained experimental results. The adjusted model was used to analyze the impact of the initial concentration and flow rate of reactants on the efficiency of the Fenton process to degrade phenol. Moreover, the model was applied to evaluate the treatment cost of wastewater contaminated with phenol in order to meet environmental standards. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

There is an increasing need to treat effluents contaminated with phenol with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) to minimize their impact on the environment as well as on bacteriological populations of other wastewater treatment systems. One of the most promising AOPs is the Fenton process that relies on the Fenton reaction. Nevertheless, there are no systematic studies on Fenton reactor networks. The objective of this paper is to develop a strategy for the optimal synthesis of Fenton reactor networks. The strategy is based on a superstructure optimization approach that is represented as a mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) model. Network superstructures with multiple Fenton reactors are optimized with the objective of minimizing the sum of capital, operation and depreciation costs of the effluent treatment system. The optimal solutions obtained provide the reactor volumes and network configuration, as well as the quantities of the reactants used in the Fenton process. Examples based on a case study show that multi-reactor networks yield decrease of up to 45% in overall costs for the treatment plant. (C) 2010 The Institution of Chemical Engineers. In this work the adsorption mechanisms of atomic and molecular oxygen on Cu(100) surface are studied using ab initio simulation methods. Through the atomistic scale under-standing of the elementary oxidation processes we can further understand the large-scale oxidation. Copper is a material widely used in industry which makes it an interesting subject, and also understanding the oxidation of copper helps us understand the oxidation mechanism of other metals. First we have a look on some theory on surface alloys in general and behaviour of Ag on Cu(100) surface. After that the physical background there is behind the methods of density functional calculations are discussed, and some methods, namely potential energy surfaces and molecular dynamics, are introduced. Then there is a brief look on the numerical details used in the calculations, and after that, the results of the simulations are exhibited.

The present dissertation is devoted to the systematic approach to the development of organic toxic and refractory pollutants abatement by chemical decomposition methods in aqueous and gaseous phases. The systematic approach outlines the basic scenario of chemical decomposition process applications with a step-by-step approximation to the most effective result with a predictable outcome for the full-scale application, confirmed by successful experience. The strategy includes the following steps: chemistry studies, reaction kinetic studies in interaction with the mass transfer processes under conditions of different control parameters, contact equipment design and studies, mathematical description of the process for its modelling and simulation, processes integration into treatment technology and its optimisation, and the treatment plant design. The main idea of the systematic approach for oxidation process introduction consists of a search for the most effective combination between the chemical reaction and the treatment device, in which the reaction is supposed to take place. Under this strategy,a knowledge of the reaction pathways, its products, stoichiometry and kinetics is fundamental and, unfortunately, often unavailable from the preliminary knowledge. Therefore, research made in chemistry on novel treatment methods, comprisesnowadays a substantial part of the efforts. Chemical decomposition methods in the aqueous phase include oxidation by ozonation, ozone-associated methods (O3/H2O2, O3/UV, O3/TiO2), Fenton reagent (H2O2/Fe2+/3+) and photocatalytic oxidation (PCO). In the gaseous phase, PCO and catalytic hydrolysis over zero valent ironsare developed. The experimental studies within the described methodology involve aqueous phase oxidation of natural organic matter (NOM) of potable water, phenolic and aromatic amino compounds, ethylene glycol and its derivatives as de-icing agents, and oxygenated motor fuel additives ¿ methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) ¿ in leachates and polluted groundwater. Gas-phase chemical decomposition includes PCO of volatile organic compounds and dechlorination of chlorinated methane derivatives. The results of the research summarised here are presented in fifteenattachments (publications and papers submitted for publication and under preparation).

Conventional technology used in the treatment of wastewater has been pointed as a major environmental problem for sustainable development, since minimization is not addressed accordingly. Advanced oxidation processes (AOP), based on the formation of hydroxyl radical (OH), a powerful oxidant agent, have been considered to be a potential technology for the destruction of many toxic compounds. Photocatalysis using solar light, an AOP, has been studied for nearly 20 years and recently attracted great interest as a clean-up technology. However, solar detoxification processes have not yet achieved commercial success. This article presents an overview of reaction mechanisms at the surface of semiconductors used as photocatalysts (specially TiO2), when heterogeneous photocatalysis is used to remove hazardous compounds from contaminated sites.

The present experiment describes the preparation, characterization of n-butyl(pyridil)cobaloxime complex and its electrochemical property. The infrared and uv-visible absorption spectra were used to characterize the complex obtained. The infrared spectrum of the compound showed characteristics bands that indicated the formation of the Co-C chemical bond formation. The electronic absorption spectrum in acetonitrile showed transition bands attributed to p-p*, metal-to-ligand charge transfer, d-d transitions and charge transfer Co-C. The electrochemical property was investigated by the pulse differential voltammetry technique. Two oxidation processes: Co(I)/Co(II) at -423 mV and Co(II)/Co(III) at 752 mV were observed.

A large variety of organic and inorganic compounds may be found in wastewater which can contribute to environmental contamination. Oxidation processes with ozone (O3; O3/UV; O3/H2O2; O3/TiO2; O3/Mn+2) and the use of ozone in the pre- or post-treatment of wastewater combined with biological processes has been extensively studied for the treatment of effluents. The aim of this work was to evaluate the potential of the ozonation process in the treatment of several industrial wastewaters, namely effluents from paper mills, and textile, whey (dairy industry), pharmaceutic sand pesticides plants.

In this study the efficiency of advanced oxidative processes (AOPs) were investigated toward the degradation of aqueous solutions containing benzene, toluene and xylenes (BTX). The results indicated that BTX can be effectively oxidized by the UV-A-assisted photo-Fenton process. The treatment permits almost total degradation of BTX and removal of more than 80% of the phenolyc intermediates at reaction times of about 30 min. Preliminary investigations using solar light suggest a good potentiality of the process for the treatment of large volumes of aqueous samples containing these polluting species.

Many industrial processes produce effluents with a wide variety of xenobiotic organic pollutants, which cannot be efficiently degraded by conventional biological treatments. Thus, the development of new technologies to eliminate these refractory compounds in water has become very imperative in order to assure the quality of this important resource. Ozonation is a very promising process for the treatment of wastewaters containing non-easily removable organic compounds. The present work aims at highlighting new methods of enhancing the efficiency of ozone towards the removal organic pollutants in aqueous solution. Special attention is given to catalytic ozonation processes contemplating homo- and heterogeneous catalysis, their activity and mechanisms. Recent results and future prospects about the application of these processes to real effluents are also evaluated.
