Characteristics of the Raman spectrum from carbon onions have been identified in terms of the position of the G peak and appearance of the transverse optic phonon peaks. Five new peaks were observed in the low wavenumber region, at about 1100, 861, 700, 450 and 250 cm(-1). The origins of these peaks are discussed in terms of the phonon density of states (PDOS) and phonon dispersion curves of graphite. The curvature of the graphene planes is invoked to explain the relaxation of the Raman selection rules and the appearance of the new peaks. The Raman spectrum of carbon onions is compared with that of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). The strain of graphene planes due to curvature has been estimated analytically and is used to account for the downward shift of the G peak. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Irradiation efect in three carbon allotropes C60, diamond and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) induced by 170 keV B ions, mainly including the process of the damage creation, is investigated by means of Raman spectroscopy technique. The diferences on irradiation sensitivity and structural stability for C60, HOPG and diamond are compared. The analysis results indicate that C60 is the most sensitive for B ions irradiation, diamond is the second one and the structure of HOPG is the most stable under B ion irradiation. The damage cross sections ? of C60, diamond and HOPG deduced from the Raman spectra are 7.78×10−15 , 6.38×10−15 and1.31 × 10−15cm2, respectively.

The self-assembly of poly(di-n-butylsilane) (PDBS) and poly(di-n-hexylsilane) (PDHS) on the surfaces of amorphous carbon and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) have been investigated, respectively. The morphology and structures of these self-assembled thin films were studied by using atomic force microscopy, transmission electronic microscopy, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. In the case of weak van der Waals interactions between absorbed molecules and substrate, i.e., on amorphous carbon, the self-assembly process was driven by absorbate-absorbate intermolecular interactions. For PDBS with weak absorbate-absorbate intermolecular interactions, the thin film showed organization lacking any measurable preferred orientation on the surface of amorphous carbon. While for PDHS with rigid backbone and strong intermolecular interactions, flat-on lamellae with silicon backbones perpendicular to the surface of amorphous carbon were formed. However, in the case of strong van der Waals interactions between absorbed molecules and substrate, i.e., on HOPG, the self-assembly process was tailored by the balance of absorbate-absorbate intermolecular interactions and molecule-substrate interactions. Both PDHS and PDBS thin films grew into edge-on lamellae on the surface of HOPG, which aligned according to a Mold symmetry.

Platinum nanoparticles were electrocrystallized on a 4-aminophenyl monolayer-grafted carbon substrate. These Pt-modified surfaces were characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The characterization by STM revealed that the platinum nanoparticles obtained had good size monodispersity and were well separated from one another on HOPG surfaces. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. The preparation, structure, and electrochemical and electrocatalytical properties of a new polyoxometalate-based organic/inorganic film, composed of cetyl pyridinum 11-molybdovanadoarsenate (CPMVA) molecules, have been studied. Cyclic potential scanning in acetone solution led to a stable CPMVA film formed on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and cyclic voltammetry were used for characterizing the structure and properties of the CPMVA film. These studies indicated that self-aggregated clusters were formed on a freshly cleaved HOPG surface, while a self-organized monolayer was formed on the precathodized HOPG electrode. The CPMVA film exhibited reversible redox kinetics both in acidic aqueous and in acetone solution, which showed that it could be used as a catalyst even in organic phase. The CPMVA film remained stable even at pH > 7.0, and the pH dependence of the film was much smaller than that of its inorganic film (H4AsMo11VO40) in aqueous solution. The CPMVA film showed strong electrocatalysis on the reduction of bromate, and the catalytic currents were proportional to the square of the concentration of bromate. The new kind of polyoxometalate with good stability may have extensive promise in catalysis.

The structure characterization of proteins or enzymes by STM on electrochemically prepared HOPG surface studied in this laboratory is reviewed. The serial structures of Hb were observed. The differences between the denaturation and inactivation of HRP were investigated by in situ and ex situ STM. The structural variation of Hb in an organic solvent was imaged while protein denaturation was easily observed in a polar solvent.

Polyaniline nanoparticles were prepared on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface from dilute polyaniline acidic solution (1 mM aniline + 1 M HClO4) using a pulsed potentiostatic method. Electrochemistry, Fourier transform infrared external reflection spectroscopy (FT-IR-ERS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and tapping-mode atomic force microscopy (TMAFM) were: used to characterize the composition and structure of the polyaniline nanoparticles. FT-IR-ERS and XPS results revealed that the polyaniline was in its emeraldine form. TMAFM measurement showed that the electropolymerized polyaniline nanoparticles dispersed on the:HOPG surface with a coverage of about 10(10) cm(-2). These nanoparticles were disk-shaped having a height of 10(-30) Angstrom and an apparent diameter varying from 200 to 600 Angstrom. The particle dimensions increased with the electropolymerization charge (Q) over the interval from 5.7 to 19.3 mu C cm(-2) (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we present a new method of fabricating metal nanoparticles on carbon substrates through molecular design. Scanning tunneling microscopy measurements show that the electrochemically synthesized Ag nanoparticles are homogeneously dispersed on the modified highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface with a narrow particle size distribution. Moreover, the size and number density of Ag nanoparticles on the grafted HOPG surface can be easily changed through control of the experimental conditions. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. In this paper, an organic-inorganic composite film of heteropolyanion was Formed by attaching a Keggin-type heteropolyanion, SiW12O404-, on carbon electrode surface derivatized by 4-aminophenyl monolayer. The composite film thus grafted on carbon electrode surface has good stability because of the ionic bonding character between SiW12O404- and surface aminophenyl groups. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and cyclic voltammetry were used to characterize the composite film. Compared with SiW12O404- electrodeposited on a bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE), the composite film gives three more sharp and well-defined redox couples attributed to two one- and two-electron processes, and the analyses of the voltammograms of SiW12O404- anion in the composite film modified on GCE shows that its surface coverage is close to a closest packing monolayer. STM characterization shows that a two-dimensional order heteropolyanion monolayer was formed on HOPG substrate. The composite film provides a favorable environment for electron and proton transfer between SiW12O404- ion and electrode surface, which may make it suitable for various applications in sensors and microelectronics devices.

Non-stoichiometric mixed-valent molybdenum(VI, V) oxide film was grown on carbon substrates by the electrodeposition method. Responses of the prepared molybdenum oxide thin films to potential and to different solution acidities were studied by cyclic voltammetry, and the corresponding morphological changes of the film were monitored by atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM images of the molybdenum oxide film show that the characteristic domed structure on the film surface increased during the transition from the oxidized state to the reduced state without signification change in the KMS surface roughness value. Furthermore, AFM studies show that the solution acidity has great effect on the morphology of the films, and the films undergo a homogenizing process with increasing pH of the solutions. Beef liver catalase molecules can stick tenaciously to the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface which has been activated by electrochemical anodization. The immobilized sample is stable enough for high resolution scanning tunneling microscope (STM) imaging. When the anodized conditions are controlled properly, the HOPG surface will be covered with a very thin oxide layer which can bind the protein molecules. Individual molecules of native beef liver catalase are directly observed in detail by STM, which shows an oval-shape structure with a waist. The dimensions of one catalase molecule in this study are estimated as 9.0 x 6.0x 2.0 nm(3), which are in good agreement with the known data obtained from X-ray analysis, except the height can not be exactly determined from STM. Electrochemical results confirm that the freshly adsorbed catalase molecules maintain their native structures with biological activities. However, the partly unfolding structure of catalase molecules is observed after the sample is stored for 15 days, this may be caused by the long-term interaction between catalase molecules and the anodized HOPG surface.

Based on scanning tunnelling microscopy and electrochemical measurements, orientation and electrocatalytic function of riboflavin adsorbed on carbon substrates have been described for the first time. Scanning tunnelling micrographs show clearly that tip induction may result in an orientation change of the adsorbed riboflavin molecule on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite from the initially vertical orientation to the stable flat form. The adsorbed riboflavin as an effective mediator can accelerate the reduction of dioxygen which accepts two electrons from the reduced riboflavin to generate hydrogen peroxide. The rate constants of the electrocatalytic reaction in various pH solutions were determined using a rotating disc electrode modified with riboflavin. The pH effect and possible catalytic mechanism are discussed in detail.

Immobilization of protein molecules is a fundamental problem for scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) measurements with high resolution. In this paper, an electrochemical method has been proved to be an effective way to fix native horseradish peroxidase (HRP) as well as inactivated HRP from electrolyte onto a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface. This preparation is suitable for both ex situ and in situ electrochemical STM (ECSTM) measurements. In situ STM has been successfully employed to observe totally different structures of HRP in three typical cases: (1) in situ ECSTM reveals an oval-shaped pattern for a single molecule in neutral buffer solution, which is in good agreement with the dimension determined as 6.2 x 4.3 x 1.2. nm(3) by ex situ STM for native HRP; (2) in situ ECSTM shows that the adsorbed HRP molecules on HOPG in a denatured environment exhibit swelling globes at the beginning and then change into a V-shaped pattern after 30 min; (3) in situ ECSTM reveals a black hole in every ellipsoidal sphere for inactivated HRP in strong alkali solution. The cyclic voltammetry results indicate that the adsorbed native HRP can directly catalyse the reduction of hydrogen peroxide, demonstrating that a direct electron transfer reduction occurred between the enzyme and HOPG electrode, whereas the corresponding cyclic voltammograms for denatured HRP and inactivated HRP adsorbed on HOPG electrodes indicate a lack of ability to catalyse H2O2 reduction, which confirms that the HRP molecules lost their biological activity. Obviously, electrochemical results powerfully support in situ STM observations.
