The authors investigate channel incentives as extra-contractual governance processes that maintain and extend marketing channel relationships. More specifically, instrumental incentives are monetary-based payments made by a manufacturer in a unilateral channel arrangement to motivate distributor compliance, while equity incentives are bilateral expectations of fair treatment that motivate both parties to continue to cooperate with one another. A model of the antecedents and performance consequences of channel incentives is conceptualized and tested on 314 marketing channel relationships using a structural equation modeling methodology. The findings support the conceptual model and suggest that unique facets of the channel relationship explain the type of incentive mechanism in use.

Research was undertaken in the field of marketing strategy, its formulation and implementation in Dunlop Belting Division. Emphasis was placed on marketing channel strategy, but other strategies including product strategy were studied. The research has resulted in changes in management practice in the client organisation. The relevance of theories of company organisation, planning and strategy, and marketing channels was examined in the light of the research evidence. The technique of action-research was used to gain admittance to and effect change within the client organisation. Case study material was collected for subsequent analysis. The factors affecting marketing strategy formulation in the client organisation were studied. Both the external and the internal business environments were considered. The operation of the observed marketing channels was compared with channel theory. Market segmentation and penetration, and the selling and technical resources of the channels were analysed. Recommendations were made to (a) enlarge and resite the client's distribution unit to locate it centrally in England (b) use the resited unit to secure local advantage (c) obtain greater integration of field sales activities with and from the centre. A new ex-stock distribution unit was established. Improvements to the client's ex-stock marketing in Scotland were also recommended, including improvements to the Scottish distributor's stock control procedure, as well as to Dunlop-Distributor relationships at all levels. The influence of company organisation structure and formalised procedures and systems on the formulation of strategy were considered with respect to channel and product strategy, and other aspects of marketing. Conclusions were drawn that the action research resulted in successful implementation of .agreed changes in the client organisation; that theories of strategy formulation and planning, of the operation of decentralised companies, and of industrial market segmentation required modification; that the theory of marketing channels was found relevant and useful.

Mobile phones have the potential of fostering political mobilisation. There is a significant political power in mobile technology. Like the Internet, mobile phones facilitate communication and rapid access to information. Compared to the Internet, however, mobile phone diffusion has reached a larger proportion of the population in most countries, and thus the impact of this new medium is conceivably greater. There are now more mobile phones in the UK than there are people (averaging at 121 mobile phones for every 100 people). In this paper, the attempt to use modern mobile technology to handle the General Election, is discussed. The pre-election advertising, election day issues, including the election news and results as they come in, and answering questions via text message regarding the results of current and/or previous general elections are considered.

In their article - Sales Promotion In Hotels: A British Perspective - by Francis Buttle, Lecturer, Department of Hotel, Restaurant, and Travel Administration, University of Massachusetts and Ini Akpabio, Property Manager, Trusthouse Forte, Britain, Buttle and Akpabio initially state: “Sales promotion in hotels is in its infancy. Other industries, particularly consumer goods manufacturing, have long recognized the contribution that sales promotion can make to the cost-effective achievement of marketing objectives. Sales promotion activities in hotels have remained largely uncharted. The authors define, identify and classify these hotel sales promotion activities to understand their function and form, and to highlight any scope for improvement.” The authors begin their discussion by attempting to define what the phrase sales promotion [SP] actually means. “The Institute of Sales Promotion regards sales promotions as “adding value, usually of a temporary nature, to a product or service in order to persuade the end user to purchase that particular brand as opposed to a competitive brand,” the authors offer. Williams, however, describes sales promotions more broadly as “short term tactical marketing tools which are used to achieve specific marketing objectives during a defined time period,” Buttle and Akpabio present with attribution. “The most significant difference between these two viewpoints is that Williams does not limit his definition to activities which are targeted at the consumer,” is their educated view. A lot of the discussion is centered on the differences in the collective marketing-promotional mix. “…it is not always easy to definitively categorize promotional activity,” Buttle and Akpabio say. “For example, in personal selling, a sales promotion such as a special bonus offer may be used to close the sale; an advertisement may be sales promotional in character in that it offers discounts.” Are promotion and marketing distinguishable as two separate entities? “…not only may there be conceptual confusion between components of the promotional mix, but there is sometimes a blurring of the boundaries between the elements of the marketing mix,” the authors suggest. “There are several reasons why SP is particularly suitable for use in hotels: seasonality, increasing competitiveness, asset characteristics, cost characteristics, increased use of channel intermediaries, new product launches, and deal proneness.” Buttle and Akpabio offer their insight on each of these segments. The authors also want you to know that SP customer applications are not the only game in town, SP trade applications are just as essential. Bonuses, enhanced commission rates, and vouchers are but a few examples of trade SP. The research for the article was compiled from several sources including, mail surveys, telephone surveys, personal interviews, trade magazines and newspapers; essentially in the U.K.

Neste artigo, investiga-se a adoção de canais alternativos para a comercialização de produtos agrícolas como forma de atenuar o poder, cada vez maior, exercido pelas grandes redes varejistas. O artigo investiga a decisão - e os efeitos daí decorrentes - de uma determinada empresa sediada no interior paulista, agrícola Pedra Branca, quanto à operacionalização verticalizada de uma butique de frutas, legumes e verduras (FLVs). Consciente dos novos padrões demandados pelo consumidor, a estratégia da empresa alvo do estudo foi combinar a oferta regular de produtos frescos, de qualidade intrínseca padronizada e preços atrativos, a um serviço diferenciado, baseado em um alto valor na experiência de compra. Esta estratégia fundamenta-se no anseio dos consumidores de, mais do que simplesmente adquirir produtos, experimentar sensações, as quais vividas em momentos de lazer exerceriam um grande poder de diferenciação. Realizou-se um estudo de caso baseado em entrevistas em profundidade semiestruturadas com diretores e gerentes da empresa. Como resultado, as evidências empíricas sugerem: 1) a verticalização (integração vertical) da atividade de comercialização como uma alternativa para a apropriação de valor da produção ao longo do canal de distribuição; e 2) o desafio da gestão do suprimento como requisito-chave para a adequada gestão do valor de uma marca. Considera-se oportuno lembrar, porém, que, em decorrência das limitações próprias da metodologia de estudos de caso, estas tais evidências devem ser entendidas como proposição a ser testada em trabalhos quantitativos futuros, ou mesmo melhor embasada via condução de estudos multicaso.

RESUMO: O presente trabalho tem por objective o estudo da problemática das alterações induzidas pela internet na gestão comercial das unidade hoteleiras portuguesas. O estudo desenvolveu-se em duas fases. Na primeira, através de pesquisa e revisão bibliográfica, procedeu-se aà teorização dos conceitos e técnicas abordadas. A segunda assentou num trabalho de investigação realizado em duas vertentes: a primeira, onde se procurou conhecer a situação vivida através da recolha de dados sobre os sítios das unidades hoteleiras da amostra considerada; a segunda, onde se procurou, através da técnica Delphi, avaliar as perspectivas da evolução dessa mesma realidade. O trabalho realizado evidenciou que a internet, enquanto canal de comunicação e de comercialização, induziu alterações significativas, ainda que em diferentes graus, na forma de realizar a gestão comercial das unidades hoteleiras portuguesas. Alterações que se traduziram, no essencial, na: crescente importância da gestão da relação com os clientes; maior complexidade das políticas de produto e de preços; forte aceleração da acção comercial. Ou seja, a internet induziu não só a necessidade de redefinição do posicionamento das unidades hoteleiras portuguesas, bem como da forma destas realizarem o trabalho comercial. ABSTRACT: This work aims to study the issues around the changes introduced by the internet in the management of marketing of the portuguese hotel units. The study was done in two phases. First by researching and consulting the literature, setting the concepts theory and approach techniques. The second phase was based on a research work following two aspects: in the first instance trying to understand the existing situation through the collection of data regarding the location of the hotel units in the sample used; and secondly we tried, through the Delphi technique, to assess the evolution perspectives of that same reality. This study proved that the internet, as a communication and marketing channel brought about significant changes, although in various degrees, on how marketing management of the Portuguese hotel units is done. These changes were essentially reflect, the increasing importance of client relationship management; the greater complexity of the product and price policies; strong increase in the marketing action. That is, internet has not only introduced the need to redefine the standpoint of the Portuguese hotel units but also how they carry out their marketing activity.

O projeto aqui apresentado consiste no desenvolvimento de um plano estratégico de marketing digital para o projeto Laboratório de Criação Digital (LCDPorto). O LCDPorto tem sete anos de existência, sem nunca ter definido uma estratégia de comunicação. O principal objetivo passa por aprofundar os vários temas que integram Marketing Digital, e desenvolver um plano que permita ao LCDPorto ganhar mais notoriedade pelas atividades que desenvolve e, também, obter mais público para participar nas atividades. Áreas como email marketing, contente marketing, SEO, social media e outras, não são áreas que funcionam de forma independente, mas sim, parte de um plano estratégico. Neste relatório serão apresentados alguns dos passos deste plano, nomeadamente Análise de Concorrência Online, estratégia de SEO, com o objetivo de obter dados prévios essenciais ao desenvolvimento desta estratégia de Marketing Digital.

Integrated Communication Strategy for MyLabel Following paper presents Integrated Communication Strategy for Continente’s private label brand of cosmetics MyLabel. The main purpose of the project is to position MyLabel as venture brand which will gain strong market position in order to compete with the manufacturer brands. Therefore, based on the created brand equity model for the venture cosmetic brand, MyLabel will be approached from the branding perspective in order to improve perceived quality and consecutively, build brand recognition and credibility. In this respect, integrated communication strategy includes some of the branding tactics and marketing communication mix. Thereafter, MyLabel will be transformed into the sub-brand MyBeauty, which can exploit opportunities given by the new market image of retailers’ brands and gain special, unique position in the market.

This study provides a comparative economic analysis of the primary production of pork and its marketing channel in Spain and the United States. The focus on Spain is due to the profound growth and transformation of its pork sector over the last 20 years, compared with other major players in the world market for pig meat. The analysis reveals a number of similar characteristics but also important differences between the two countries. The significant expansion of Spain’s pork production sector stemmed from a number of factors that apply, to a relatively large extent, to some U.S. states (in particular, North Carolina) but do not apply to the U.S. pork production sector as a whole. This implies that it is unlikely that the U.S. pork production sector as a whole will mimic an expansion driven by the same type of factors in the future. Likewise, it seems highly unlikely that the U.S. consumption of pig meat will expand in the future based on the same driving forces behind the sharp increase in Spain’s domestic demand for pig meat over the last 20 years. The analysis also indicates that Spanish pig producers are currently being subjected to more stringent environmental and animal welfare regulations than their U.S. counterparts and that these regulations are becoming increasingly more restrictive. It would not be surprising to see similar trends emerging in the United States, leading to a substantially more restrictive regulatory environment for U.S. hog producers.

Yhä useampi etsii nykyään tietoa tuotteista ja palveluista internetin kautta. Vastapainoisesti lähes jokainen yritys käyttää internetsivujaan markkinointikanavana. Mietittäessä markkinoinnin peruskysymyksiä kuten kohdesegmentin saavuttamista tai kampanjan tuottoastetta ei vastausta usein osaa internetsivujen osalta antaa niin markkinointiosasto kuin IT-osastokaan. Hakukoneoptimointi on yksi hakukonemarkkinoinnin muoto, jonka avulla internetsivujen saavutettavuutta voidaan parantaa. Kehityksen toteamiseksi on oltava mittareita, joina internetsivuilla voidaan käyttää internetsivuille tarkoitettuja kävijäseurantaohjelmistoja. Tässä työssä käsitellään hakukoneoptimointia ja sen mahdollisuuksia parantaa sivustojen näkyvyyttä internetin hakukoneissa. Hakukoneoptimoinnilla tarkoitetaan sivustojen teknisen toteutuksen muokkaamista hakukoneystävälliseksi ja sisällön muokkaamista niin, että sivustotsijoittuvat halutuin hakusanoin hakutulosten kärkipäähän. Onnistumisen mittaamiseksi työssä perehdytään kävijäseurannan mahdollisuuksiin ja toteutukseen. Työn tavoitteena oli tuoda Primesoft Oy:lle riittävä tietotaito hakukoneoptimoinnista, toteuttaa hakukoneoptimointipalvelu ja muokata yrityksen ohjelmistot hakukoneoptimointia tukeviksi. Työn tavoitteet saavutettiin pääosin ja tutustuminen hakukoneoptimointiin avasi portin koko internetmarkkinoinnin maailmaan. Palvelun toimivuutta testattiin Primesoftin omilla sivuilla ja tulokset osoittautuivat varsin rohkaiseviksi. Jatkossa hakukoneoptimointia voidaan tarjota palveluna asiakkaille.

Yritykset tekevät nykyään yhä enemmän yhteistyötä keskenään eli verkostoituvat. Verkostoitumisella haetaan kykyä vastata nopeasti muuttuvan toimintaympäristön haasteisiin. Tässä diplomityössä tutkitaan testaus- ja laboratoriopalveluiden saatavuuden kehittämistä verkostoitumisen keinoin.Alueellisia testaus- ja laboratoriopalveluiden saatavuutta parannetaan valjastamalla käyttöön yritysten yksityisessä käytössä olevat tuotekehityslaboratoriot ja niiden vapaa kapasiteetti. Verkoston ytimen muodostaa teknologiapalvelu, joka hallitsee tietoa yritysten resursseista ja jakaa tätä tietoa. Työssä kartoitettiin alueella olevista yrityksistä heidän tarpeitaan tuotekehityksen aikaiselle testaukselle, tähän sopivia olemassa olevia laitteita ja tiloja ja yritysten mielipiteitä toiminnan organisoimisesta. Lisäksi tutkittiin tuotekehityksen aikana tarvittavaa direktiivitietouden tarvetta yrityksissä. Yritykset suhtautuivat erittäin myönteisesti yhteistyön tekemiseen testaus- ja laboratoriotoiminnassa. Yrityksistä löytyi erilaisia testauslaitteita ja –tiloja, ja näitä on muidenkin yritysten mahdollista käyttää tietyin ehdoin, kunhan se ei häiritse yrityksen omaa tuotekehitystyötä ja vapaata kapasiteettia löytyy.

CRM on yritysten tietojärjestelmä, jolla voidaan tukea asiakkuuden hallintaa ja kehittämistä. Monilla suuryrityksillä on paljon asiakkaita ja niiden on mahdotonta tunnistaa asiakkaitaan yksilöinä. Kuitenkin asiakkaat arvostavat yhä enemmän henkilökohtaista palvelua ja kontakteja. Yritysten asiakastietokantoihin kertyy runsaasti tietoa asiakkaista ja heidän ostokäyttäytymisestään. Suuresta informaatiomäärästä johtuen tarvitaan kehittynyttä tietotekniikkaa asiakkaiden tyypittelyyn ja asiakastarpeiden tunnistamiseen. Tässä diplomityössä kehitetään neuroCRM-teoriaa määrällisesti suuren ja monimutkaisen asiakasinformaation hallintaan. Teoria perustuu itseorganisoituvien neuroverkkojen käyttöön asiakasinformaation analysoimiseksi CRM-järjestelmässä. Asiakkaat segmentoidaan ja personoidaan iteratiivisia SOM-analyysejä suorittamalla. Tulosten perusteella kehitetään asiakkaiden yksilöllisyyttä huomioivia markkinointikeinoja ja käytetään uusia kanavia, esimerkiksi mobiilia viestintätekniikkaa asiakkaiden tavoittamiseen. Asiakaskannattavuuden parantamiseksi voi- daan tehdä strategisia valintoja ja päätöksiä markkinoinnin kohdentamista varten.

Suomalaiset yritykset ovat lähteneet hakemaan kasvua omille liiketoiminnoilleen, ja Baltian markkina-alue on ollut monille yrityksille ensimmäinen askel kansainvälisille liiketoiminnoille. Erityisesti tukkukauppatoimiala on ollut kasvussa Baltian alueella. Tässä työssä on käsitelty yhtä tukkukaupan muotoa, noutotukkukauppaa, Virossa toimivan pääosaltaan suomalaisomisteisen cash&carry-ketjun näkökulmasta. Ensimmäinen ketjun toimipiste perustettiin jo 1990-luvun alussa lähes heti Viron itsenäistymisen jälkeen. Toukokuussa 2005 perustetaan ketjun kahdeksas toimipiste. Jotta yritykset pärjäisivät kilpailussa, on niiden investoitava eri tavoin toimintaansa, että liiketoiminta jatkuisi ja asema kilpailutilanteessa säilyisi. Tehokkaat markkinointi- ja jakelukanavaratkaisut ovat yritysten intresseissä, koska niillä yritykset pystyvät lisäämään usein kontrollia markkinoista. Jokainen yritys pyrkii kehittämään liiketoimintaansa, ja sillä pyritään saavuttamaan kilpailuetuja tai säilyttämään nykyinen kilpailuetu. Toiminnan kehittäminen vaatii jatkuvaa liiketoimintaympäristön seurantaa, jotta aukenevat mahdollisuudet pystyttäisiin hyödyntämään ja tekemään liiketoiminnalle kannattavia ratkaisuja.
