This study aimed to examine the incidence of young adult-onset T1DM and T2DM among Finns, and to explore the possible risk factors for young adult-onset T1DM and T2DM that occur during the perinatal period and childhood. In the studies I-II, the incidence of diabetes was examined among 15-39-year-old Finns during the years 1992-2001. Information on the new diagnoses of diabetes was collected from four sources: standardized national reports filled in by diabetes nurses, the Hospital Discharge Register, the Drug Reimbursement Register, and the Drug Prescription Register. The type of diabetes was assigned using information obtained from these four data sources. The incidence of T1DM was 18 per 100,000/year, and there was a clear male predominance in the incidence of T1DM. The incidence of T1DM increased on average 3.9% per year during 1992-2001. The incidence of T2DM was 13 per 100,000/year, and it displayed an increase of 4.3% per year. In the studies III-V, the effects of perinatal exposures and childhood growth on the risk for young adult-onset T1DM and T2DM were explored in a case-control setting. Individuals diagnosed with T1DM (n=1,388) and T2DM (n=1,121) during the period 1992-1996 were chosen as the diabetes cases for the study, and two controls were chosen for each case from the National Population Register. Data on the study subjects parents and siblings was obtained from the National Population Register. The study subjects original birth records and child welfare clinic records were traced nationwide. The risk for young adult-onset T2DM was the lowest among the offspring of mothers aged about 30 years, whereas the risk for T2DM increased towards younger and older maternal ages. Birth orders second to fourth were found protective of T2DM. In addition, the risk for T2DM was observed to decrease with increasing birth weight until 4.2 kg, after which the risk began to increase. A high body mass index (BMI) at the BMI rebound between ages 3-11 years substantially increased the risk for T2DM, and the excess weight gain in individuals diagnosed with T2DM began in early childhood. Maternal age, birth order, or body size at birth had no effect on the risk for young adult-onset T1DM. Instead, individuals with T1DM were observed to have a higher maximum BMI before the age of 3 than their control subjects. In conclusion, the increasing trend in the development of both T1DM and T2DM among young Finnish adults is alarming. The high risk for T1DM among the Finnish population extends to at least 40 years of age, and at least 200-300 young Finnish adults are diagnosed with T2DM every year. Growth during the fetal period and childhood notably affects the risk for T2DM. T2DM prevention should also target childhood obesity. Rapid growth during the first years of life may be a risk factor for late-onset T1DM.

Data on free convection heat transfer to water and mercury are collected using a test rig in vertical annuli of three radii ratios, the walls of which are maintained at uniform temperatures. A theoretical analysis of the boundary layer equations has been attempted using local similarity transformation and double boundary layer approach. Correlations derived from the present theoretical analysis are compared with the analysis and the experimental data available in literature for non-metallic fluids and also with the present experimental data on water and mercury. Generalised correlations are set up for expressing the ratio of heat transferred by convection to the heat transferred by pure conduction and Nusselt's number, in terms of Grashof, Rayleigh and Prandtl numbers, based on the theoretical analysis and the present data on mercury and water. The present generalised correlations agree with the reported and present data for non-metallic fluids and liquid metals with an average deviation of 9% and maximum deviation of ± 13.7%.

Little is known about the threat of mercury (Hg) to consumers in food webs of Australia's wet-dry tropics. This is despite high concentrations in similar biomes elsewhere and a recent history of gold mining that could lead to a high degree of exposure for biota. We analysed Hg in water, sediments, invertebrates and fishes in rivers and estuaries of north Queensland, Australia to determine its availability and biomagnification in food webs. Concentrations in water and sediments were low relative to other regions of Hg concern, with only four of 138 water samples and five of 60 sediment samples above detection limits of 0.1 mu g L-1 and 01 mu g g(-1), respectively. Concentrations of Hg in fishes and invertebrates from riverine and wetland food webs were well below international consumption guidelines, including those in piscivorous fishes, likely due to low baseline concentrations and limited rates of biomagnification (average slope of log Hg vs. delta N-15 = 0.08). A large fish species of recreational, commercial, and cultural importance (the barramundi, Lates calcarifer), had low concentrations that were below consumption guidelines. Observed variation in Hg concentrations in this species was primarily explained by age and foraging location (floodplain vs. coastal), with floodplain feeders having higher Hg concentrations than those foraging at sea. These analyses suggest that there is a limited threat of Hg exposure for fish-eating consumers in this region. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Evidence for the generalized anomeric effect (GAE) in the N-acyl-1,3-thiazolidines, an important structural motif in the penicillins, was sought in the crystal structures of N-(4-nitrobenzoyl)-1,3-thiazolidine and its (2:1) complex with mercuric chloride, N-acetyl-2-phenyl-1,3-thiazolidine, and the (2:1) complex of N-benzoyl-1,3-thiazolidine with mercuric bromide. An inverse relationship was generally observed between the. C-2-N and C-2-S bond lengths of the thiazolidine ring, supporting the existence of the GAE. (Maximal bond length changes were similar to 0.04 angstrom for C-2-N-3, S-1-C-2, and similar to 0.08 angstrom for N-3-C-6.) Comparison with N-acylpyrrolidines and tetrahydrothiophenes indicates that both the nitrogen-to-sulphur and sulphur-to-nitrogen GAE's operate simultaneously in the 1,3-thiazolidines, the former being dominant. (This is analogous to the normal and exo-anomeric effects in pyranoses, and also leads to an interesting application of Baldwin's rules.) The nitrogen-to-sulphur GAE is generally enhanced in the mercury(II) complexes (presumably via coordination at the sulphur); a 'competition' between the GAE and the amide resonance of the N-acyl moiety is apparent. There is evidence for a 'push-pull' charge transfer between the thiazolidine moieties in the mercury(II) complexes, and for a 'back-donation' of charge from the bromine atoms to the thiazolidine moieties in the HgBr2 complex. (The sulphur atom appears to be sp(2) hybridised in the mercury(II) complexes, possibly for stereoelectronic reasons.) These results are apparently relevant to the mode of action of the penicillins. A new model of ignition in an ignitron, based on the electrical breakdown of the junction between the ignitor (semiconductor) and the mercury (metal) is proposed. A method of evaluating some of the ignition characteristics is also developed. The paper gives a critical summary of the various characteristics of the ignition process. The new model is stated and used to explain all the ignition characteristics. The experiments conducted in support of the various aspects of this model are also given.

The ultraviolet bands of mercury iodide have been excited in uncondensed discharge and photographed with a quartz Littrow spectrograph. The bands in the region λ 2658 to 2530 Å have been analysed into two systems which may form the two components of a2Π-2∑ electronic transition with a2Π interval equal to 858·9 cm-1. These systems and the systems in the region λ 3095 to 2647 Å have the same lower state.

Pulicat Lake sediments are often severely polluted with the toxic heavy metal mercury. Several mercury-resistant strains of Bacillus species were isolated from the sediments and all the isolates exhibited broad spectrum resistance (resistance to both organic and inorganic mercuric compounds). Plasmid curing assay showed that all the isolated Bacillus strains carry chromosomally borne mercury resistance. Polymerase chain reaction and southern hybridization analyses using merA and merB3 gene primers/probes showed that five of the isolated Bacillus strains carry sequences similar to known merA and merB3 genes. Results of multiple sequence alignment revealed 99% similarity with merA and merB3 of TnMERI1 (class II transposons). Other mercury resistant Bacillus species lacking homology to these genes were not able to volatilize mercuric chloride, indicating the presence of other modes of resistance to mercuric compounds.

The electrochemical reduction of Cu(II)-CyDTA (CyDTA — trans 1,2-cyclohexanediamine N, N, N′, N′ tetraacetic acid) by impedance method reveals the unusual behaviour of complex plane polarograms owing to potential dependence of double layer capacitance. The impedance plane plots by frequency variation method indicates the quasi-reversible nature of the system. From these plots the chargetransfer resistance at various potentials was evaluated. The standard rate constant was evaluated which complements the prediction of impedance plots for the quasireversible behaviour of the system.
