Reproduction, age and growth of the Russell's scad, Decapterus russellii (Rüppel, 1828)(Carangidae) from Sofala Bank, Mozambique

Age, growth and reproduction of D. russellii were studied. Most of the material used was caught by the commercial fishing fleet, operating in the Sofala Bank (Mozambique) area. A total of 68,000 fish were examined during the period 1979-1981. There were 2 main spawning periods each year, one in February-March and another in August-September. The sex ratio was about 1:1. Ageing was carried out using primary growth rings in the otoliths and analysis of size-frequency distributions. The parameters of the von Bertalanffy's growth equation were determined. Males and females grew at the same rate.

Observations on the taxonomy and biology of Lates (Cuvier 1828) in Lake Albert

Both in terms of commercial landings and biological importance, the Nile Perch is one of the most prominent fish in Lake Albert. It can bear considerable further exploitation, is the source of stockings elsewhere, and it is, therefore, important to know whether more than one species is being dealt with, and, if so, what differences there are in the ecology of the different species.

C12H12I2Te4, M(r) = 920.44, monoclinic, P2(1)/n, a = 10.942 (2), b = 14.924 (2), c = 11.415 (2) angstrom, beta = 104.32 (1)-degrees, V = 1806.0 (5) angstrom 3, Z = 4, D(x) = 3.38 g cm-3, lambda(Mo K-alpha) = 0.71069 angstrom, mu = 100.7 cm-1, F(000) = 1592, T = 294 K, R = 0.033 for 1828 observed reflections. One of the Te atoms is bonded to the two I atoms, which are on either side of the molecular plane. The Te-I distances are 2.963 (1) and 2.961 (1) angstrom, which means oxidation at the Te atom instead of at the C = C bonds.

Sexual dimorphism in canine length of woolly spider monkeys (Brachyteles arachnoides, E. Geoffroy 1806)

We measured canine teeth from 28 woolly spider monkeys (Brachyteles arachnoides) to assess sexual dimorphism and population differences. The specimens are from the Brazilian states of Bahia, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. We found strong sexual dimorphism in canine length for individuals belonging to populations south of 22°00′ latitude but no sexual dimorphism in canine length from individuals of populations north of 21°00′ latitude. Canine length did not vary among females of northern and southern populations. However, southern males had significantly longer canines than northern males. This geographical difference in canine morphology, together with the presence or absence of thumbs and published accounts of differences in genetics and social structure between northern and southern populations, suggests that Brachyteles arachnoides may be composed of at least two subspecies, which appear to be separated by the rivers Grande and Paraiba do Sul and the Serra da Mantiqueira. © 1993 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

It was presented to the Congress of the United States.

Escala de madurez gonadal de cabrilla Paralabrax humeralis (Valenciennes, 1828)

Se realiza la validación de la escala de madurez gonadal macroscópica de la cabrilla Paralabrax humeralis. Se analizaron 197 ovarios y 188 testículos provenientes del seguimiento de la pesquería demersal y cruceros de investigación de recursos demersales en el 2005 (Enero-febrero y mayo-junio). Sobre la base del análisis histológico se asignó a cada individuo un estadio de madurez macroscópico. Se realizó la descripción de los estadios de madurez que van desde el estadio 0 (virginal) hasta el 5 (recuperación en hembras, post expulsante en machos). Se realizó una comparación con escalas anteriormente realizadas, discutiendo además los beneficios de su uso.
