La melancólica muerte del Chico Ostra, es todo un ejemplo del particular universo de Tim Burton, autor entre otros títulos de: Eduardo Manostijeras, La leyenda de Sleepy Hollow o Pesadilla antes de Navidad. Pertenece a una larga tradición anglosajona de fabulistas crueles, ingeniosos y de retorcida moral, aunque indudablemente moralistas, cuyas obras se mueven en las imprecisas y turbulentas aguas de una literatura infantil para adultos que difícilmente puede aceptarse como indicada para niños, pero en la que son precisamente los niños quienes encuentran el máximo disfrute, y la inequívoca expresión de la niñez como algo mucho más complejo, cruel, patético, agridulce y siniestro, a la par que divertido, lúdico y amoral. En este artículo se hace un recorrido por toda su obra y las influencias que ha recibido de otros autores como el literato Dr. Seuss o el ilustrador Gorey.

Writing, death and absence in 'Tim' by H.O. Sturgis

There has been a considerable critical interest in the representation of death in Children's Literature, with an increasingly prevalent move to read it as granting the child the status of object. Thus, for example, Judith Plotz takes it to 'increase [the] presence' of the child. Through a detailed reading of one late C19th school story, I suggest that such readings proceed through a resistance to textuality. This essay offers a reading of death as bound up with the play of the text, deferred, shifting and retrospectively constructed rather than a state of simple, recoverable objecthood.

Detection of the Tim-3 ligand, galectin-9, inside the allograft during a rejection episode

Introduction: Tim-3 is a Th1 lymphocytes membrane protein with inhibitory function. Its ligand, galectin-9, was recently identified and it is expressed in some lymphocyte subpopulation. In addition, endothelial cells and fibroblasts can also express galectin-9 according to the local cytokine milieu. Both molecules can act as important regulatory tools in the immune system. Aim: Evaluate the expression of these immunoregulatory molecules inside kidney allografts during acute rejection episodes. Methods: By using a quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay, we measured the levels of messenger RNA (mRNA) for galectin-9 and Tim-3 in 21 samples obtained at allograft nephrectomy. Five samples received the histological diagnosis of acute non-vascular rejection (ANVR), twelve of acute vascular rejection (AVR), and five of loss of non-immune cause (LNIC; as control). As cytolytic response markers we measured mRNA levels of granzyme B, interferon-gamma and perforin. The statistic analysis was performed using one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Pearson correlation. Results: The mean levels of Tim-3 mRNA expression were 13.99 +/- 6.99 for LNIC, 48.13 +/- 54.47 for RACNV and 238.63 +/- 333.14 for RAV (p = 0.004). For galectin-9, the mean values were 0.57 +/- 0.49 for LNIC, 0.66 +/- 0.36 for RACNV and 2.34 +/- 1.62 for RAV (p = 0.006). Furthermore, there was a positive correlation between both molecules (r = 0.526, p = 0.016). Also. granzyme B, perforin and interferon-gamma mRNA expression were different among the three groups. Conclusion: Messenger RNA level expressions of all the studied molecules were higher inside allografts with more severe rejection. Moreover, there was a positive correlation between galectin-9 and Tim-3 mRNA levels. The simultaneous expression of galectin-9 and Tim-3 may indicate an immunoregulatory function, during the ongoing cytotoxic response. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Axial ligand influence on geometries, charge distributions and electronic structures of iron tetraazamacrocycle [Fe((II))TIM(X)(Y)](2+) complexes assessed by Density Functional Theory

We employed the Density Functional Theory along with small basis sets, B3LYP/LANL2DZ, for the study of FeTIM complexes with different pairs of axial ligands (CO, H(2)O, NH(3), imidazole and CH(3)CN). These calculations did not result in relevant changes of molecular quantities as bond lengths, vibrational frequencies and electronic populations supporting any significant back-donation to the carbonyl or acetonitrile axial ligands. Moreover, a back-donation mechanism to the macrocycle cannot be used to explain the observed changes in molecular properties along these complexes with CO or CH(3)CN. This work also indicates that complexes with CO show smaller binding energies and are less stable than complexes with CH(3)CN. Further, the electronic band with the largest intensity in the visible region (or close to this region) is associated to the transition from an occupied 3d orbital on iron to an empty pi* orbital located at the macrocycle. The energy of this Metal-to-Ligand Charge Transfer (MLCT) transition shows a linear relation to the total charge of the macrocycle in these complexes as given by Mulliken or Natural Population Analysis (NPA) formalisms. Finally, the macrocycle total charge seems to be influenced by the field induced by the axial ligands. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A partir do exame de um episódio da série, o presente texto busca identificar traços marcantes na configuração da linguagem cenográfica do programa infantil Castelo Rá-Tim-Bum (TV Cultura). Para a análise, utilizamos como base a semiótica de Peirce e as relações entre os signos e as formas de representação propostas por Lúcia Santaella (2001). Essas teorias nos possibilitaram observar, com maior precisão, o cenário do programa como elemento de significação e as particularidades de seus elementos constitutivos.

The De-Totalization of History in Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried

This paper aims at discussing how Tim O’Brien, a veteran of the Vietnam War, reviews the American involvement in the conflict in his novel The Things They Carried (1990). The author shows the perspective of the soldiers in the stories and, therefore, presents other possibilities to analyze that historical fact. The interplay of fiction and truth is essential for O’Brien to reach the objective of reevaluating official history in order to make the readers rethink the past.

Age-Related Expansion of Tim-3 Expressing T Cells in Vertically HIV-1 Infected Children

As perinatally HIV-1-infected children grow into adolescents and young adults, they are increasingly burdened with the long-term consequences of chronic HIV-1 infection, with long-term morbidity due to inadequate immunity. In progressive HIV-1 infection in horizontally infected adults, inflammation, T cell activation, and perturbed T cell differentiation lead to an "immune exhaustion'', with decline in T cell effector functions. T effector cells develop an increased expression of CD57 and loss of CD28, with an increase in co-inhibitory receptors such as PD-1 and Tim-3. Very little is known about HIV-1 induced T cell dysfunction in vertical infection. In two perinatally antiretroviral drug treated HIV-1-infected groups with median ages of 11.2 yr and 18.5 yr, matched for viral load, we found no difference in the proportion of senescent CD28(-)CD57(+)CD8(+) T cells between the groups. However, the frequency of Tim-3(+)CD8(+) and Tim-3(+)CD4(+) exhausted T cells, but not PD-1(+) T cells, was significantly increased in the adolescents with longer duration of infection compared to the children with shorter duration of HIV-1 infection. PD-1(+)CD8(+) T cells were directly associated with T cell immune activation in children. The frequency of Tim-3(+)CD8(+) T cells positively correlated with HIV-1 plasma viral load in the adolescents but not in the children. These data suggest that Tim-3 upregulation was driven by both HIV-1 viral replication and increased age, whereas PD-1 expression is associated with immune activation. These findings also suggest that the Tim-3 immune exhaustion phenotype rather than PD-1 or senescent cells plays an important role in age-related T cell dysfunction in perinatal HIV-1 infection. Targeting Tim-3 may serve as a novel therapeutic approach to improve immune control of virus replication and mitigate age related T cell exhaustion.
