The present work undertakes the preparation and physico-chemical characterisation of iron promoted sulphated zirconia (SZ) with different amounts of iron loading and their application to Friedel-Crafts benzoylation of benzene, toluene and xylene under different experimental conditions, XRD and laser Raman techniques reveal the stabilisation of the tetragonal phase of zirconia and the existence of iron in highly dispersed form as Fe203 on the catalyst surface. The surface acidic properties were determined by ammonia temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and perylene adsorption, The results were supported by the TGA studies after adsorption of pyridine and 2,6-dimethylpyridine (2,6-DMP), Strong Lewis acid sites on the surface, which are evident from TPD and perylene adsorption studies. explain the high catalytic activity of the systems towards benzoylation. The experimental results provide evidence for the truly heterogeneous nature of the reaction. The studies also establish the resistance to deactivation in the metal incorporated sulphated systems.

The catalytic activity of Ni/CeO(2)-Al(2)O(3) catalysts modified with noble metals (Pt, Ir, Pd and Ru) was investigated for the steam reform of ethanol and glycerol. The catalysts were characterized by the following techniques: Energy-dispersive X-ray, BET, X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmed reduction, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). The results showed that the formation of inactive nickel aluminate was prevented by the presence of CeO(2) dispersed on alumina. The promoting effect of noble metals included a decrease in the reduction temperatures of NiO species interacting with the support, due to the hydrogen spillover effect. It was seen that the addition of noble metal stabilized the Ni sites in the reduced state along the reforming reaction, increasing the ethanol and glycerol conversions and decreasing the coke formation. The higher catalytic performance for the ethanol steam reforming at 600 degrees C and glycerol steam reforming was obtained for the NiPd and NiPt catalysts, respectively, which presented an effluent gaseous mixture with the highest H(2) yield with reasonably low amounts of CO. The performance of noble metal (Pt, Ru, Ir)-promoted Co/MgAl(2)O(4) catalysts for the steam reforming of ethanol was investigated. The catalysts were characterized by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Xray diffraction, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, temperature-programmed reduction, temperature-programmed oxidation and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES). The results showed that the formation of inactive cobalt aluminate was suppressed by the presence of a MgAl(2)O(4) spinel phase. The effects of the noble metals included a marked lowering of the reduction temperatures of the cobalt surface species interacting with the support. It was seen that the addition of noble metal stabilized the Co sites in the reduced state throughout the reaction. Catalytic performance was enhanced in the promoted catalysts, particularly CoRu/MgAl(2)O(4), which showed the highest selectivity for H(2) production. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The effect of noble metal addition on the catalytic properties of Co/Al2O3 was evaluated for the steam reforming of methane. Co/Al2O3 catalysts were prepared with addition of different noble metals (Pt, Pd, Ru and Ir 0.3 wt.%) by a wetness impregnation method and characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and temperature programmed oxidation (TPO) of the reduced catalysts. The UV-vis spectra of the samples indicate that, most likely, large amounts of the supported cobalt form Co species in which cobalt is in octahedral and tetrahedral symmetries. No peaks assigned to cobalt species from aluminate were found for the promoted and unpromoted cobalt catalysts. TPO analyses showed that the addition of the noble metals on the Co/Al2O3 catalyst leads to a more stable metallic state and less susceptible to the deactivation process during the reforming reaction. The Co/Al2O3 promoted with Pt showed higher stability and selectivity for H(2)production during the methane steam reforming. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This work presents the synthesis and characterization of SiO2:metal (Ni, Co, Ag, and Fe) nanocomposites processed by the polymerizable complex method. The polymeric precursor solutions obtained were characterized by means of FT-Raman and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. The results show the formation of a hybrid polymer with carbon and silicon in the macromolecule chain and the transition metal cation arrested within this polymeric chain. The nanocomposites are formed during the controlled polymeric precursor pyrolysis. The reduction of the metal cation is promoted by the CO/CO2 atmosphere resulting from the pyrolysis of the organic material. Microstructural characterization, performed by TEM and X-ray diffraction (XRD), showed that the nanocomposites are formed by metal nanoparticles embedded in a amorphous matrix formed by SiO2 and carbon. In the SiO2:Fe system, Fe3C was also detected by XRD.

Crown ethers have the ability of solubilizing inorganic salts in apolar solvents and to promote chemical reactions by phase-transfer catalysis. However, details on how crown ethers catalyze ionic S(N)2 reactions and control selectivity are not well understood. In this work, we have used high level theoretical calculations to shed light on the details of phase-transfer catalysis mechanism of KF reaction with alkyl halides promoted by 18-crown-6. A complete analysis of the of the model reaction between KF(18-crown-6) and ethyl bromide reveals that the calculations can accurately predict the product ratio and the overall kinetics. Our results point out the importance of the K* ion and of the crown ether ring in determining product selectivity. While the K* ion favors the S(N)2 over the E2 anti pathway, the crown ether ring favors the S(N)2 over E2 syn route. The combination effects lead to a predicted 94% for the S(N)2 pathway in excellent agreement with the experimental value of 92%. A detailed analysis of the overall mechanism of the reaction under phase-transfer conditions also reveals that the KBr product generated in the nucleophilic fluorination acts as an inhibitor of the 18-crown-6 catalyst and it is responsible for the observed slow reaction rate. We report here three examples of the reactivity of protic nucleophiles with diimine-type ligands in the presence of FeII salts. In the first case, the iron-promoted alcoholysis reaction of one nitrile group of the ligand 2,3-dicyano-5,6-bis(2-pyridyl)-pyrazine (L1) permitted the isolation of an stable E-imido−ester, [Fe(L1‘)2](CF3SO3)2 (1), which has been characterized by spectroscopic studies (IR, ES-MS, Mössbauer), elemental analysis, and crystallographically. Compound 1 consists of mononuclear octahedrally coordinated FeII complexes where the FeII ion is in its low-spin state. The iron-mediated nucleophilic attack of water to the asymmetric ligand 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)pyrido[3,4-b]pyrazine (L2) has also been studied. In this context, the crystal structures of two hydration−oxidation FeIII products, [Fe(L2‘)2](ClO4)3·3CH3CN (2) and trans-[FeL2‘‘Cl2] (3), are described. Compounds 2 and 3 are both mononuclear FeIII complexes where the metals occupy octahedral positions. In principle, L2 is expected to coordinate to metal ions through its bipyridine-type units to form a five-membered ring; however, this is not the case in compounds 2 and 3. In 2, the ligand coordinates through its pyridines and through the hydroxyl group attached to the pyrazine imino carbon after hydration, that is, in an N,O,N tridentate manner. In compound 3, the ligand has suffered further transformations leading to a very stable diamido complex. In this case, the metal ion achieves its octahedral geometry by means of two pyridines, two amido N atoms, and two axial chlorine atoms. Magnetic susceptibility measurements confirmed the spin state of these two FeIII species:  compounds 2 and 3 are low-spin and high-spin, respectively.

α-Melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) analogs, cyclized through site-specific rhenium (Re) and technetium (Tc) metal coordination, were structurally characterized and analyzed for their abilities to bind α-MSH receptors present on melanoma cells and in tumor-bearing mice. Results from receptor-binding assays conducted with B16 F1 murine melanoma cells indicated that receptor-binding affinity was reduced to approximately 1% of its original levels after Re incorporation into the cyclic Cys4,10, d-Phe7–α-MSH4-13 analog. Structural analysis of the Re–peptide complex showed that the disulfide bond of the original peptide was replaced by thiolate–metal–thiolate cyclization. A comparison of the metal-bound and metal-free structures indicated that metal complexation dramatically altered the structure of the receptor-binding core sequence. Redesign of the metal binding site resulted in a second-generation Re–peptide complex (ReCCMSH) that displayed a receptor-binding affinity of 2.9 nM, 25-fold higher than the initial Re–α-MSH analog. Characterization of the second-generation Re–peptide complex indicated that the peptide was still cyclized through Re coordination, but the structure of the receptor-binding sequence was no longer constrained. The corresponding 99mTc- and 188ReCCMSH complexes were synthesized and shown to be stable in phosphate-buffered saline and to challenges from diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) and free cysteine. In vivo, the 99mTcCCMSH complex exhibited significant tumor uptake and retention and was effective in imaging melanoma in a murine-tumor model system. Cyclization of α-MSH analogs via 99mTc and 188Re yields chemically stable and biologically active molecules with potential melanoma-imaging and therapeutic properties.

Lead(II)-induced cleavage can be used as a tool to probe conformational changes in RNA. In this report, we have investigated the conformation of M1 RNA, the catalytic subunit of Escherichia coli RNase P, by studying the lead(II)-induced cleavage pattern in the presence of various divalent metal ions. Our data suggest that the overall conformation of M1 RNA is very similar in the presence of Mg2+, Mn2+, Ca2+, Sr2+ and Ba2+, while it is changed compared to the Mg2+-induced conformation in the presence of other divalent metal ions, Cd2+ for example. We also observed that correct folding of some M1 RNA domains is promoted by Pb2+, while folding of other domain(s) requires the additional presence of other divalent metal ions, cobalt(III) hexamine or spermidine. Based on the suppression of Pb2+ cleavage at increasing concentrations of various divalent metal ions, our findings suggest that different divalent metal ions bind with different affinities to M1 RNA as well as to an RNase P hairpin–loop substrate and yeast tRNAPhe. We suggest that this approach can be used to obtain information about the relative binding strength for different divalent metal ions to RNA in general, as well as to specific RNA divalent metal ion binding sites. Of those studied in this report, Mn2+ is generally among the strongest RNA binders.

Cu/CeO2, Pd/CeO2, and CuPd/CeO2 catalysts were prepared and their reduction followed by in-situ XPS in order to explore promoter and support interactions in a bimetallic CuPd/CeO2 catalyst effective for the oxygen-assisted water-gas-shift (OWGS) reaction. Mutual interactions between Cu, Pd, and CeO2 components all affect the reduction process. Addition of only 1 wt% Pd to 30 wt% Cu/CeO2 greatly enhances the reducibility of both dispersed CuO and ceria support. In-vacuo reduction (inside XPS chamber) up to 400 °C results in a continuous growth of metallic copper and Ce3+ surface species, although higher temperatures results in support reoxidation. Supported copper in turn destabilizes metallic palladium metal with respect to PdO, this mutual perturbation indicating a strong intimate interaction between the Cu–Pd components. Despite its lower intrinsic reactivity towards OWGS, palladium addition at only 1 wt% loading significantly improved CO conversion in OWGS reaction over a monometallic 30 wt% Cu/CeO2 catalysts, possibly by helping to maintain Cu in a reduced state during reaction.
