El proyecto, “Aplicaciones de filtrado adaptativo LMS para mejorar la respuesta de acelerómetros”, se realizó con el objetivo de eliminar señales no deseadas de la señal de información procedentes de los acelerómetros para aplicaciones automovilísticas, mediante los algoritmos de los filtros adaptativos LMS. Dicho proyecto, está comprendido en tres áreas para su realización y ejecución, los cuales fueron ejecutados desde el inicio hasta el último día de trabajo. En la primera área de aplicación, diseñamos filtros paso bajo, paso alto, paso banda y paso banda eliminada, en lo que son los filtros de butterworth, filtros Chebyshev, de tipo uno como de tipo dos y filtros elípticos. Con esta primera parte, lo que se quiere es conocer, o en nuestro caso, recordar el entorno de Matlab, en sus distintas ecuaciones prediseñadas que nos ofrece el mencionado entorno, como también nos permite conocer un poco las características de estos filtros. Para posteriormente probar dichos filtros en el DSP. En la segunda etapa, y tras recordar un poco el entorno de Matlab, nos centramos en la elaboración y/o diseño de nuestro filtro adaptativo LMS; experimentado primero con Matlab, para como ya se dijo, entender y comprender el comportamiento del mismo. Cuando ya teníamos claro esta parte, procedimos a “cargar” el código en el DSP, compilarlo y depurarlo, realizando estas últimas acciones gracias al Visual DSP. Resaltaremos que durante esta segunda etapa se empezó a excitar las entradas del sistema, con señales provenientes del Cool Edit Pro, y además para saber cómo se comportaba el filtro adaptativo LMS, se utilizó señales provenientes de un generador de funciones, para obtener de esta manera un desfase entre las dos señales de entrada; aunque también se utilizó el propio Cool Edit Pro para obtener señales desfasadas, pero debido que la fase tres no podíamos usar el mencionado software, realizamos pruebas con el generador de funciones. Finalmente, en la tercera etapa, y tras comprobar el funcionamiento deseado de nuestro filtro adaptativo DSP con señales de entrada simuladas, pasamos a un laboratorio, en donde se utilizó señales provenientes del acelerómetro 4000A, y por supuesto, del generador de funciones; el cual sirvió para la formación de nuestra señal de referencia, que permitirá la eliminación de una de las frecuencias que se emitirá del acelerómetro. Por último, cabe resaltar que pudimos obtener un comportamiento del filtro adaptativo LMS adecuado, y como se esperaba. Realizamos pruebas, con señales de entrada desfasadas, y obtuvimos curiosas respuestas a la salida del sistema, como son que la frecuencia a eliminar, mientras más desfasado estén estas señales, mas se notaba. Solucionando este punto al aumentar el orden del filtro. Finalmente podemos concluir que pese a que los filtros digitales probados en la primera etapa son útiles, para tener una respuesta lo más ideal posible hay que tener en cuenta el orden del filtro, el cual debe ser muy alto para que las frecuencias próximas a la frecuencia de corte, no se atenúen. En cambio, en los filtros adaptativos LMS, si queremos por ejemplo, eliminar una señal de entre tres señales, sólo basta con introducir la frecuencia a eliminar, por una de las entradas del filtro, en concreto la señal de referencia. De esta manera, podemos eliminar una señal de entre estas tres, de manera que las otras dos, no se vean afectadas por el procedimiento. Abstract The project, "LMS adaptive filtering applications to improve the response of accelerometers" was conducted in order to remove unwanted signals from the information signal from the accelerometers for automotive applications using algorithms LMS adaptive filters. The project is comprised of three areas for implementation and execution, which were executed from the beginning until the last day. In the first area of application, we design low pass filters, high pass, band pass and band-stop, as the filters are Butterworth, Chebyshev filters, type one and type two and elliptic filters. In this first part, what we want is to know, or in our case, remember the Matlab environment, art in its various equations offered by the mentioned environment, as well as allows us to understand some of the characteristics of these filters. To further test these filters in the DSP. In the second stage, and recalling some Matlab environment, we focus on the development and design of our LMS adaptive filter; experimented first with Matlab, for as noted above, understand the behavior of the same. When it was clear this part, proceeded to "load" the code in the DSP, compile and debug, making these latest actions by the Visual DSP. Will highlight that during this second stage began to excite the system inputs, with signals from the Cool Edit Pro, and also for how he behaved the LMS adaptive filter was used signals from a function generator, to thereby obtain a gap between the two input signals, but also used Cool Edit Pro himself for phase signals, but due to phase three could not use such software, we test the function generator. Finally, in the third stage, and after checking the desired performance of our DSP adaptive filter with simulated input signals, we went to a laboratory, where we used signals from the accelerometer 4000A, and of course, the function generator, which was used for the formation of our reference signal, enabling the elimination of one of the frequencies to be emitted from the accelerometer. Note that they were able to obtain a behavior of the LMS adaptive filter suitable as expected. We test with outdated input signals, and got curious response to the output of the system, such as the frequency to remove, the more outdated are these signs, but noticeable. Solving this point with increasing the filter order. We can conclude that although proven digital filters in the first stage are useful, to have a perfect answer as possible must be taken into account the order of the filter, which should be very high for frequencies near the frequency cutting, not weakened. In contrast, in the LMS adaptive filters if we for example, remove a signal from among three signals, only enough to eliminate the frequency input on one of the inputs of the filter, namely the reference signal. Thus, we can remove a signal between these three, so that the other two, not affected by the procedure.

The analysis of the interdependence between time series has become an important field of research in the last years, mainly as a result of advances in the characterization of dynamical systems from the signals they produce, the introduction of concepts such as generalized and phase synchronization and the application of information theory to time series analysis. In neurophysiology, different analytical tools stemming from these concepts have added to the ‘traditional’ set of linear methods, which includes the cross-correlation and the coherency function in the time and frequency domain, respectively, or more elaborated tools such as Granger Causality. This increase in the number of approaches to tackle the existence of functional (FC) or effective connectivity (EC) between two (or among many) neural networks, along with the mathematical complexity of the corresponding time series analysis tools, makes it desirable to arrange them into a unified-easy-to-use software package. The goal is to allow neuroscientists, neurophysiologists and researchers from related fields to easily access and make use of these analysis methods from a single integrated toolbox. Here we present HERMES (http://hermes.ctb.upm.es), a toolbox for the Matlab® environment (The Mathworks, Inc), which is designed to study functional and effective brain connectivity from neurophysiological data such as multivariate EEG and/or MEG records. It includes also visualization tools and statistical methods to address the problem of multiple comparisons. We believe that this toolbox will be very helpful to all the researchers working in the emerging field of brain connectivity analysis.

El actual proyecto consiste en la creación de una interfaz gráfica de usuario (GUI) en entorno de MATLAB que realice una representación gráfica de la base de datos de HRTF (Head-Related Transfer Function). La función de transferencia de la cabeza es una herramienta muy útil en el estudio de la capacidad del ser humano para percibir su entorno sonoro, además de la habilidad de éste en la localización de fuentes sonoras en el espacio que le rodea. La HRTF biaural (terminología para referirse al conjunto de HRTF del oído izquierdo y del oído derecho) en sí misma, posee información de especial interés ya que las diferencias entre las HRTF de cada oído, conceden la información que nuestro sistema de audición utiliza en la percepción del campo sonoro. Por ello, la funcionalidad de la interfaz gráfica creada presenta gran provecho dentro del estudio de este campo. Las diferencias interaurales se caracterizan en amplitud y en tiempo, variando en función de la frecuencia. Mediante la transformada inversa de Fourier de la señal HRTF, se obtiene la repuesta al impulso de la cabeza, es decir, la HRIR (Head-Related Impulse Response). La cual, además de tener una gran utilidad en la creación de software o dispositivos de generación de sonido envolvente, se utiliza para obtener las diferencias ITD (Interaural Time Difference) e ILD (Interaural Time Difference), comúnmente denominados “parámetros de localización espacial”. La base de datos de HRTF contiene la información biaural de diferentes puntos de ubicación de la fuente sonora, formando una red de coordenadas esféricas que envuelve la cabeza del sujeto. Dicha red, según las medidas realizadas en la cámara anecoica de la EUITT (Escuela Universitaria de Ingeniería Técnica de Telecomunicación), presenta una precisión en elevación de 10º y en azimut de 5º. Los receptores son dos micrófonos alojados en el maniquí acústico llamado HATS (Hats and Torso Simulator) modelo 4100D de Brüel&Kjaer. Éste posee las características físicas que influyen en la percepción del entorno como son las formas del pabellón auditivo (pinna), de la cabeza, del cuello y del torso humano. Será necesario realizar los cálculos de interpolación para todos aquellos puntos no contenidos en la base de datos HRTF, este proceso es sumamente importante no solo para potenciar la capacidad de la misma sino por su utilidad para la comparación entre otras bases de datos existentes en el estudio de este ámbito. La interfaz gráfica de usuario está concebida para un manejo sencillo, claro y predecible, a la vez que interactivo. Desde el primer boceto del programa se ha tenido clara su filosofía, impuesta por las necesidades de un usuario que busca una herramienta práctica y de manejo intuitivo. Su diseño de una sola ventana reúne tanto los componentes de obtención de datos como los que hacen posible la representación gráfica de las HRTF, las HRIR y los parámetros de localización espacial, ITD e ILD. El usuario podrá ir alternando las representaciones gráficas a la vez que introduce las coordenadas de los puntos que desea visualizar, definidas por phi (elevación) y theta (azimut). Esta faceta de la interfaz es la que le otorga una gran facilidad de acceso y lectura de la información representada en ella. Además, el usuario puede introducir valores incluidos en la base de datos o valores intermedios a estos, de esta manera, se indica a la interfaz la necesidad de realizar la interpolación de los mismos. El método de interpolación escogido es el de la ponderación de la distancia inversa entre puntos. Dependiendo de los valores introducidos por el usuario se realizará una interpolación de dos o cuatro puntos, siendo éstos limítrofes al valor introducido, ya sea de phi o theta. Para añadir versatilidad a la interfaz gráfica de usuario, se ha añadido la opción de generar archivos de salida en forma de imagen de las gráficas representadas, de tal forma que el usuario pueda extraer los datos que le interese para cualquier valor de phi y theta. Se completa el presente proyecto fin de carrera con un trabajo de investigación y estudio comparativo de la función y la aplicación de las bases de datos de HRTF dentro del marco científico y de investigación. Esto ha hecho posible concentrar información relacionada a través de revistas científicas de investigación como la JAES (Journal of the Audio Engineering Society) o la ASA (Acoustical Society of America), además, del IEEE ( Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) o la “Web of knowledge” entre otras. Además de realizar la búsqueda en estas fuentes, se ha optado por vías de información más comunes como Google Académico o el portal de acceso “Ingenio” a los todos los recursos electrónicos contenidos en la base de datos de la universidad. El estudio genera una ampliación en el conocimiento de la labor práctica de las HRTF. La mayoría de los estudios enfocan sus esfuerzos en mejorar la percepción del evento sonoro mediante su simulación en la escucha estéreo o multicanal. A partir de las HRTF, esto es posible mediante el análisis y el cálculo de datos como pueden ser las regresiones, siendo éstas muy útiles en la predicción de una medida basándose en la información de la actual. Otro campo de especial interés es el de la generación de sonido 3D. Mediante la base de datos HRTF es posible la simulación de una señal biaural. Se han diseñado algoritmos que son implementados en dispositivos DSP, de tal manera que por medio de retardos interaurales y de diferencias espectrales es posible llegar a un resultado óptimo de sonido envolvente, sin olvidar la importancia de los efectos de reverberación para conseguir un efecto creíble de sonido envolvente. Debido a la complejidad computacional que esto requiere, gran parte de los estudios coinciden en desarrollar sistemas más eficientes, llegando a objetivos tales como la generación de sonido 3D en tiempo real. ABSTRACT. This project involves the creation of a Graphic User Interface (GUI) in the Matlab environment which creates a graphic representation of the HRTF (Head-Related Transfer Function) database. The head transfer function is a very useful tool in the study of the capacity of human beings to perceive their sound environment, as well as their ability to localise sound sources in the area surrounding them. The binaural HRTF (terminology which refers to the HRTF group of the left and right ear) in itself possesses information of special interest seeing that the differences between the HRTF of each ear admits the information that our system of hearing uses in the perception of each sound field. For this reason, the functionality of the graphic interface created presents great benefits within the study of this field. The interaural differences are characterised in space and in time, varying depending on the frequency. By means of Fourier's transformed inverse of the HRTF signal, the response to the head impulse is obtained, in other words, the HRIR (Head-Related Impulse Response). This, as well as having a great use in the creation of software or surround sound generating devices, is used to obtain ITD differences (Interaural Time Difference) and ILD (Interaural Time Difference), commonly named “spatial localisation parameters”. The HRTF database contains the binaural information of different points of sound source location, forming a network of spherical coordinates which surround the subject's head. This network, according to the measures carried out in the anechoic chamber at the EUITT (School of Telecommunications Engineering) gives a precision in elevation of 10º and in azimuth of 5º. The receivers are two microphones placed on the acoustic mannequin called HATS (Hats and Torso Simulator) Brüel&Kjaer model 4100D. This has the physical characteristics which affect the perception of the surroundings which are the forms of the auricle (pinna), the head, neck and human torso. It will be necessary to make interpolation calculations for all those points which are not contained the HRTF database. This process is extremely important not only to strengthen the database's capacity but also for its usefulness in making comparisons with other databases that exist in the study of this field. The graphic user interface is conceived for a simple, clear and predictable use which is also interactive. Since the first outline of the program, its philosophy has been clear, based on the needs of a user who requires a practical tool with an intuitive use. Its design with only one window unites not only the components which obtain data but also those which make the graphic representation of the HRTFs possible, the hrir and the ITD and ILD spatial location parameters. The user will be able to alternate the graphic representations at the same time as entering the point coordinates that they wish to display, defined by phi (elevation) and theta (azimuth). The facet of the interface is what provides the great ease of access and reading of the information displayed on it. In addition, the user can enter values included in the database or values which are intermediate to these. It is, likewise, indicated to the interface the need to carry out the interpolation of these values. The interpolation method is the deliberation of the inverse distance between points. Depending on the values entered by the user, an interpolation of two or four points will be carried out, with these being adjacent to the entered value, whether that is phi or theta. To add versatility to the graphic user interface, the option of generating output files in the form of an image of the graphics displayed has been added. This is so that the user may extract the information that interests them for any phi and theta value. This final project is completed with a research and comparative study essay on the function and application of HRTF databases within the scientific and research framework. It has been possible to collate related information by means of scientific research magazines such as the JAES (Journal of the Audio Engineering Society), the ASA (Acoustical Society of America) as well as the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and the “Web of knowledge” amongst others. In addition to carrying out research with these sources, I also opted to use more common sources of information such as Academic Google and the “Ingenio” point of entry to all the electronic resources contained on the university databases. The study generates an expansion in the knowledge of the practical work of the HRTF. The majority of studies focus their efforts on improving the perception of the sound event by means of its simulation in stereo or multichannel listening. With the HRTFs, this is possible by means of analysis and calculation of data as can be the regressions. These are very useful in the prediction of a measure being based on the current information. Another field of special interest is that of the generation of 3D sound. Through HRTF databases it is possible to simulate the binaural signal. Algorithms have been designed which are implemented in DSP devices, in such a way that by means of interaural delays and wavelength differences it is possible to achieve an excellent result of surround sound, without forgetting the importance of the effects of reverberation to achieve a believable effect of surround sound. Due to the computational complexity that this requires, a great many studies agree on the development of more efficient systems which achieve objectives such as the generation of 3D sound in real time.

El primer procesamiento estricto realizado con el software científico Bernese y contemplando las más estrictas normas de cálculo recomendadas internacionalmente, permitió obtener un campo puntual de alta exactitud, basado en la integración y estandarización de los datos de una red GPS ubicada en Costa Rica. Este procesamiento contempló un total de 119 semanas de datos diarios, es decir unos 2,3 años, desde enero del año 2009 hasta abril del año 2011, para un total de 30 estaciones GPS, de las cuales 22 están ubicadas en el territorio nacional de Costa Rica y 8 internaciones pertenecientes a la red del Sistema Geocéntrico para las Américas (SIRGAS). Las denominadas soluciones semilibres generaron, semana a semana, una red GPS con una alta exactitud interna definida por medio de los vectores entre las estaciones y las coordenadas finales de la constelación satelital. La evaluación semanal dada por la repetibilidad de las soluciones brindó en promedio errores de 1,7 mm, 1,4 mm y 5,1 mm en las componentes [n e u], confirmando una alta consistencia en estas soluciones. Aunque las soluciones semilibres poseen una alta exactitud interna, las mismas no son utilizables para fines de análisis cinemático, pues carecen de un marco de referencia. En Latinoamérica, la densificación del Marco Internacional Terrestre de Referencia (ITRF), está representado por la red de estaciones de operación continua GNSS de SIRGAS, denominada como SIRGAS-CON. Por medio de las denominadas coordenadas semanales finales de las 8 estaciones consideradas como vínculo, se refirió cada una de las 119 soluciones al marco SIRGAS. La introducción del marco de referencia SIRGAS a las soluciones semilibres produce deformaciones en estas soluciones. Las deformaciones de las soluciones semilibres son producto de las cinemática de cada una de las placas en las que se ubican las estaciones de vínculo. Luego de efectuado el amarre semanal a las coordenadas SIRGAS, se hizo una estimación de los vectores de velocidad de cada una de las estaciones, incluyendo las de amarre, cuyos valores de velocidad se conocen con una alta exactitud. Para la determinación de las velocidades de las estaciones costarricenses, se programó una rutina en ambiente MatLab, basada en una ajuste por mínimos cuadrados. Los valores obtenidos en el marco de este proyecto en comparación con los valores oficiales, brindaron diferencias promedio del orden de los 0,06 cm/a, -0,08 cm/a y -0,10 cm/a respectivamente para las coordenadas [X Y Z]. De esta manera se logró determinar las coordenadas geocéntricas [X Y Z]T y sus variaciones temporales [vX vY vZ]T para el conjunto de 22 estaciones GPS de Costa Rica, dentro del datum IGS05, época de referencia 2010,5. Aunque se logró una alta exactitud en los vectores de coordenadas geocéntricas de las 22 estaciones, para algunas de las estaciones el cálculo de las velocidades no fue representativo debido al relativo corto tiempo (menos de un año) de archivos de datos. Bajo esta premisa, se excluyeron las ocho estaciones ubicadas al sur de país. Esto implicó hacer una estimación del campo local de velocidades con solamente veinte estaciones nacionales más tres estaciones en Panamá y una en Nicaragua. El algoritmo usado fue el denominado Colocación por Mínimos Cuadrados, el cual permite la estimación o interpolación de datos a partir de datos efectivamente conocidos, el cual fue programado mediante una rutina en ambiente MatLab. El campo resultante se estimó con una resolución de 30' X 30' y es altamente constante, con una velocidad resultante promedio de 2,58 cm/a en una dirección de 40,8° en dirección noreste. Este campo fue validado con base en los datos del modelo VEMOS2009, recomendado por SIRGAS. Las diferencias de velocidad promedio para las estaciones usadas como insumo para el cálculo del campo fueron del orden los +0,63 cm/a y +0,22 cm/a para los valores de velocidad en latitud y longitud, lo que supone una buena determinación de los valores de velocidad y de la estimación de la función de covarianza empírica, necesaria para la aplicación del método de colocación. Además, la grilla usada como base para la interpolación brindó diferencias del orden de -0,62 cm/a y -0,12 cm/a para latitud y longitud. Adicionalmente los resultados de este trabajo fueron usados como insumo para hacer una aproximación en la definición del límite del llamado Bloque de Panamá dentro del territorio nacional de Costa Rica. El cálculo de las componentes del Polo de Euler por medio de una rutina programa en ambiente MatLab y aplicado a diferentes combinaciones de puntos no brindó mayores aportes a la definición física de este límite. La estrategia lo que confirmó fue simplemente la diferencia en la dirección de todos los vectores velocidad y no permitió reveló revelar con mayor detalle una ubicación de esta zona dentro del territorio nacional de Costa Rica. ABSTRACT The first strict processing performed with the Bernese scientific software and contemplating the highest standards internationally recommended calculation, yielded a precise field of high accuracy, based on the integration and standardization of data from a GPS network located in Costa Rica. This processing watched a total of 119 weeks of daily data, is about 2.3 years from January 2009 to April 2011, for a total of 30 GPS stations, of which 22 are located in the country of Costa Rica and 8 hospitalizations within the network of Geocentric System for the Americas (SIRGAS). The semi-free solutions generated, every week a GPS network with high internal accuracy defined by vectors between stations and the final coordinates of the satellite constellation. The weekly evaluation given by repeatability of the solutions provided in average errors of 1.7 mm 1.4 mm and 5.1 mm in the components [n e u], confirming a high consistency in these solutions. Although semi-free solutions have a high internal accuracy, they are not used for purposes of kinematic analysis, because they lack a reference frame. In Latin America, the densification of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF), is represented by a network of continuously operating GNSS stations SIRGAS, known as SIRGAS-CON. Through weekly final coordinates of the 8 stations considered as a link, described each of the solutions to the frame 119 SIRGAS. The introduction of the frame SIRGAS to semi-free solutions generates deformations. The deformations of the semi-free solutions are products of the kinematics of each of the plates in which link stations are located. After SIRGAS weekly link to SIRGAS frame, an estimate of the velocity vectors of each of the stations was done. The velocity vectors for each SIRGAS stations are known with high accuracy. For this calculation routine in MatLab environment, based on a least squares fit was scheduled. The values obtained compared to the official values, gave average differences of the order of 0.06 cm/yr, -0.08 cm/yr and -0.10 cm/yr respectively for the coordinates [XYZ]. Thus was possible to determine the geocentric coordinates [XYZ]T and its temporal variations [vX vY vZ]T for the set of 22 GPS stations of Costa Rica, within IGS05 datum, reference epoch 2010.5. The high accuracy vector for geocentric coordinates was obtained, however for some stations the velocity vectors was not representative because of the relatively short time (less than one year) of data files. Under this premise, the eight stations located in the south of the country were excluded. This involved an estimate of the local velocity field with only twenty national stations plus three stations in Panama and Nicaragua. The algorithm used was Least Squares Collocation, which allows the estimation and interpolation of data from known data effectively. The algorithm was programmed with MatLab. The resulting field was estimated with a resolution of 30' X 30' and is highly consistent with a resulting average speed of 2.58 cm/y in a direction of 40.8° to the northeast. This field was validated based on the model data VEMOS2009 recommended by SIRGAS. The differences in average velocity for the stations used as input for the calculation of the field were of the order of +0.63 cm/yr, +0.22 cm/yr for the velocity values in latitude and longitude, which is a good determination velocity values and estimating the empirical covariance function necessary for implementing the method of application. Furthermore, the grid used as the basis for interpolation provided differences of about -0.62 cm/yr, -0.12 cm/yr to latitude and longitude. Additionally, the results of this investigation were used as input to an approach in defining the boundary of Panama called block within the country of Costa Rica. The calculation of the components of the Euler pole through a routine program in MatLab and applied to different combinations of points gave no further contributions to the physical definition of this limit. In recent decades, full electric and hybrid electric vehicles have emerged as an alternative to conventional cars due to a range of factors, including environmental and economic aspects. These vehicles are the result of considerable efforts to seek ways of reducing the use of fossil fuel for vehicle propulsion. Sophisticated technologies such as hybrid and electric powertrains require careful study and optimization. Mathematical models play a key role at this point. Currently, many advanced mathematical analysis tools, as well as computer applications have been built for vehicle simulation purposes. Given the great interest of hybrid and electric powertrains, along with the increasing importance of reliable computer-based models, the author decided to integrate both aspects in the research purpose of this work. Furthermore, this is one of the first final degree projects held at the ETSII (Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineers) that covers the study of hybrid and electric propulsion systems. The present project is based on MBS3D 2.0, a specialized software for the dynamic simulation of multibody systems developed at the UPM Institute of Automobile Research (INSIA). Automobiles are a clear example of complex multibody systems, which are present in nearly every field of engineering. The work presented here benefits from the availability of MBS3D software. This program has proven to be a very efficient tool, with a highly developed underlying mathematical formulation. On this basis, the focus of this project is the extension of MBS3D features in order to be able to perform dynamic simulations of hybrid and electric vehicle models. This requires the joint simulation of the mechanical model of the vehicle, together with the model of the hybrid or electric powertrain. These sub-models belong to completely different physical domains. In fact the powertrain consists of energy storage systems, electrical machines and power electronics, connected to purely mechanical components (wheels, suspension, transmission, clutch…). The challenge today is to create a global vehicle model that is valid for computer simulation. Therefore, the main goal of this project is to apply co-simulation methodologies to a comprehensive model of an electric vehicle, where sub-models from different areas of engineering are coupled. The created electric vehicle (EV) model consists of a separately excited DC electric motor, a Li-ion battery pack, a DC/DC chopper converter and a multibody vehicle model. Co-simulation techniques allow car designers to simulate complex vehicle architectures and behaviors, which are usually difficult to implement in a real environment due to safety and/or economic reasons. In addition, multi-domain computational models help to detect the effects of different driving patterns and parameters and improve the models in a fast and effective way. Automotive designers can greatly benefit from a multidisciplinary approach of new hybrid and electric vehicles. In this case, the global electric vehicle model includes an electrical subsystem and a mechanical subsystem. The electrical subsystem consists of three basic components: electric motor, battery pack and power converter. A modular representation is used for building the dynamic model of the vehicle drivetrain. This means that every component of the drivetrain (submodule) is modeled separately and has its own general dynamic model, with clearly defined inputs and outputs. Then, all the particular submodules are assembled according to the drivetrain configuration and, in this way, the power flow across the components is completely determined. Dynamic models of electrical components are often based on equivalent circuits, where Kirchhoff’s voltage and current laws are applied to draw the algebraic and differential equations. Here, Randles circuit is used for dynamic modeling of the battery and the electric motor is modeled through the analysis of the equivalent circuit of a separately excited DC motor, where the power converter is included. The mechanical subsystem is defined by MBS3D equations. These equations consider the position, velocity and acceleration of all the bodies comprising the vehicle multibody system. MBS3D 2.0 is entirely written in MATLAB and the structure of the program has been thoroughly studied and understood by the author. MBS3D software is adapted according to the requirements of the applied co-simulation method. Some of the core functions are modified, such as integrator and graphics, and several auxiliary functions are added in order to compute the mathematical model of the electrical components. By coupling and co-simulating both subsystems, it is possible to evaluate the dynamic interaction among all the components of the drivetrain. ‘Tight-coupling’ method is used to cosimulate the sub-models. This approach integrates all subsystems simultaneously and the results of the integration are exchanged by function-call. This means that the integration is done jointly for the mechanical and the electrical subsystem, under a single integrator and then, the speed of integration is determined by the slower subsystem. Simulations are then used to show the performance of the developed EV model. However, this project focuses more on the validation of the computational and mathematical tool for electric and hybrid vehicle simulation. For this purpose, a detailed study and comparison of different integrators within the MATLAB environment is done. Consequently, the main efforts are directed towards the implementation of co-simulation techniques in MBS3D software. In this regard, it is not intended to create an extremely precise EV model in terms of real vehicle performance, although an acceptable level of accuracy is achieved. The gap between the EV model and the real system is filled, in a way, by introducing the gas and brake pedals input, which reflects the actual driver behavior. This input is included directly in the differential equations of the model, and determines the amount of current provided to the electric motor. For a separately excited DC motor, the rotor current is proportional to the traction torque delivered to the car wheels. Therefore, as it occurs in the case of real vehicle models, the propulsion torque in the mathematical model is controlled through acceleration and brake pedal commands. The designed transmission system also includes a reduction gear that adapts the torque coming for the motor drive and transfers it. The main contribution of this project is, therefore, the implementation of a new calculation path for the wheel torques, based on performance characteristics and outputs of the electric powertrain model. Originally, the wheel traction and braking torques were input to MBS3D through a vector directly computed by the user in a MATLAB script. Now, they are calculated as a function of the motor current which, in turn, depends on the current provided by the battery pack across the DC/DC chopper converter. The motor and battery currents and voltages are the solutions of the electrical ODE (Ordinary Differential Equation) system coupled to the multibody system. Simultaneously, the outputs of MBS3D model are the position, velocity and acceleration of the vehicle at all times. The motor shaft speed is computed from the output vehicle speed considering the wheel radius, the gear reduction ratio and the transmission efficiency. This motor shaft speed, somehow available from MBS3D model, is then introduced in the differential equations corresponding to the electrical subsystem. In this way, MBS3D and the electrical powertrain model are interconnected and both subsystems exchange values resulting as expected with tight-coupling approach.When programming mathematical models of complex systems, code optimization is a key step in the process. A way to improve the overall performance of the integration, making use of C/C++ as an alternative programming language, is described and implemented. Although this entails a higher computational burden, it leads to important advantages regarding cosimulation speed and stability. In order to do this, it is necessary to integrate MATLAB with another integrated development environment (IDE), where C/C++ code can be generated and executed. In this project, C/C++ files are programmed in Microsoft Visual Studio and the interface between both IDEs is created by building C/C++ MEX file functions. These programs contain functions or subroutines that can be dynamically linked and executed from MATLAB. This process achieves reductions in simulation time up to two orders of magnitude. The tests performed with different integrators, also reveal the stiff character of the differential equations corresponding to the electrical subsystem, and allow the improvement of the cosimulation process. When varying the parameters of the integration and/or the initial conditions of the problem, the solutions of the system of equations show better dynamic response and stability, depending on the integrator used. Several integrators, with variable and non-variable step-size, and for stiff and non-stiff problems are applied to the coupled ODE system. Then, the results are analyzed, compared and discussed. From all the above, the project can be divided into four main parts: 1. Creation of the equation-based electric vehicle model; 2. Programming, simulation and adjustment of the electric vehicle model; 3. Application of co-simulation methodologies to MBS3D and the electric powertrain subsystem; and 4. Code optimization and study of different integrators. Additionally, in order to deeply understand the context of the project, the first chapters include an introduction to basic vehicle dynamics, current classification of hybrid and electric vehicles and an explanation of the involved technologies such as brake energy regeneration, electric and non-electric propulsion systems for EVs and HEVs (hybrid electric vehicles) and their control strategies. Later, the problem of dynamic modeling of hybrid and electric vehicles is discussed. The integrated development environment and the simulation tool are also briefly described. The core chapters include an explanation of the major co-simulation methodologies and how they have been programmed and applied to the electric powertrain model together with the multibody system dynamic model. Finally, the last chapters summarize the main results and conclusions of the project and propose further research topics. In conclusion, co-simulation methodologies are applicable within the integrated development environments MATLAB and Visual Studio, and the simulation tool MBS3D 2.0, where equation-based models of multidisciplinary subsystems, consisting of mechanical and electrical components, are coupled and integrated in a very efficient way.

En este proyecto se realiza el diseño e implementación de un sistema que detecta anomalías en las entradas de entornos controlados. Para ello, se hace uso de las últimas técnicas en visión por computador y se avisa visual y auditivamente, mediante un sistema hardware que recibe señales del ordenador al que está conectado. Se marca y fotografía, a una o varias personas, que cometen una infracción en las entradas de un establecimiento, vigilado con sistemas de vídeo. Las imágenes se almacenan en las carpetas correspondientes. El sistema diseñado es colaborativo, por lo tanto, las cámaras que intervienen, se comunican entre ellas a través de estructuras de datos con el objetivo de intercambiar información. Además, se utiliza conexión inalámbrica desde un dispositivo móvil para obtener una visión global del entorno desde cualquier lugar del mundo. La aplicación se desarrolla en el entorno MATLAB, que permite un tratamiento de la señal de imagen apropiado para el presente proyecto. Asimismo, se proporciona al usuario una interfaz gráfica con la que interactuar de manera sencilla, evitando así, el cambio de parámetros en la estructura interna del programa cuando se quiere variar el entorno o el tipo de adquisición de datos. El lenguaje que se escoge facilita la ejecución en distintos sistemas operativos, incluyendo Windows o iOS y, de esta manera, se proporciona flexibilidad. ABSTRACT. This project studies the design and implementation of a system that detects any anomalies on the entrances to controlled environments. To this end, it is necessary the use of last techniques in computer vision in order to notify visually and aurally, by a hardware system which receives signs from the computer it is connected to. One or more people that commit an infringement while entering into a secured environment, with video systems, are marked and photographed and those images are stored in their belonging file folder. This is a collaborative design system, therefore, every involved camera communicates among themselves through data structures with the purpose of exchanging information. Furthermore, to obtain a global environment vision from any place in the world it uses a mobile wireless connection. The application is developed in MATLAB environment because it allows an appropriate treatment of the image signal for this project. In addition, the user is given a graphical interface to easily interact, avoiding with this, changing any parameters on the program’s intern structure, when it requires modifying the environment or the data type acquisition. The chosen language eases its execution in different operating systems, including Windows or iOS, providing flexibility.

Modeling of self-similar traffic is performed for the queuing system of G/M/1/K type using Weibull distribution. To study the self-similar traffic the simulation model is developed by using SIMULINK software package in MATLAB environment. Approximation of self-similar traffic on the basis of spline functions. Modeling self-similar traffic is carried outfor QS of W/M/1/K type using the Weibull distribution. Initial data are: the value of Hurst parameter H=0,65, the shape parameter of the distribution curve α≈0,7 and distribution parameter β≈0,0099. Considering that the self-similar traffic is characterized by the presence of "splashes" and long-termdependence between the moments of requests arrival in this study under given initial data it is reasonable to use linear interpolation splines.

Antenna design is an iterative process in which structures are analyzed and changed to comply with certain performance parameters required. The classic approach starts with analyzing a "known" structure, obtaining the value of its performance parameter and changing this structure until the "target" value is achieved. This process relies on having an initial structure, which follows some known or "intuitive" patterns already familiar to the designer. The purpose of this research was to develop a method of designing UWB antennas. What is new in this proposal is that the design process is reversed: the designer will start with the target performance parameter and obtain a structure as the result of the design process. This method provided a new way to replicate and optimize existing performance parameters. The base of the method was the use of a Genetic Algorithm (GA) adapted to the format of the chromosome that will be evaluated by the Electromagnetic (EM) solver. For the electromagnetic study we used XFDTD™ program, based in the Finite-Difference Time-Domain technique. The programming portion of the method was created under the MatLab environment, which serves as the interface for converting chromosomes, file formats and transferring of data between the XFDTD™ and GA. A high level of customization had to be written into the code to work with the specific files generated by the XFDTD™ program. Two types of cost functions were evaluated; the first one seeking broadband performance within the UWB band, and the second one searching for curve replication of a reference geometry. The performance of the method was evaluated considering the speed provided by the computer resources used. Balance between accuracy, data file size and speed of execution was achieved by defining parameters in the GA code as well as changing the internal parameters of the XFDTD™ projects. The results showed that the GA produced geometries that were analyzed by the XFDTD™ program and changed following the search criteria until reaching the target value of the cost function. Results also showed how the parameters can change the search criteria and influence the running of the code to provide a variety of geometries.

The PhD project addresses the potential of using concentrating solar power (CSP) plants as a viable alternative energy producing system in Libya. Exergetic, energetic, economic and environmental analyses are carried out for a particular type of CSP plants. The study, although it aims a particular type of CSP plant – 50 MW parabolic trough-CSP plant, it is sufficiently general to be applied to other configurations. The novelty of the study, in addition to modeling and analyzing the selected configuration, lies in the use of a state-of-the-art exergetic analysis combined with the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The modeling and simulation of the plant is carried out in chapter three and they are conducted into two parts, namely: power cycle and solar field. The computer model developed for the analysis of the plant is based on algebraic equations describing the power cycle and the solar field. The model was solved using the Engineering Equation Solver (EES) software; and is designed to define the properties at each state point of the plant and then, sequentially, to determine energy, efficiency and irreversibility for each component. The developed model has the potential of using in the preliminary design of CSPs and, in particular, for the configuration of the solar field based on existing commercial plants. Moreover, it has the ability of analyzing the energetic, economic and environmental feasibility of using CSPs in different regions of the world, which is illustrated for the Libyan region in this study. The overall feasibility scenario is completed through an hourly analysis on an annual basis in chapter Four. This analysis allows the comparison of different systems and, eventually, a particular selection, and it includes both the economic and energetic components using the “greenius” software. The analysis also examined the impact of project financing and incentives on the cost of energy. The main technological finding of this analysis is higher performance and lower levelized cost of electricity (LCE) for Libya as compared to Southern Europe (Spain). Therefore, Libya has the potential of becoming attractive for the establishment of CSPs in its territory and, in this way, to facilitate the target of several European initiatives that aim to import electricity generated by renewable sources from North African and Middle East countries. The analysis is presented a brief review of the current cost of energy and the potential of reducing the cost from parabolic trough- CSP plant. Exergetic and environmental life cycle assessment analyses are conducted for the selected plant in chapter Five; the objectives are 1) to assess the environmental impact and cost, in terms of exergy of the life cycle of the plant; 2) to find out the points of weakness in terms of irreversibility of the process; and 3) to verify whether solar power plants can reduce environmental impact and the cost of electricity generation by comparing them with fossil fuel plants, in particular, Natural Gas Combined Cycle (NGCC) plant and oil thermal power plant. The analysis also targets a thermoeconomic analysis using the specific exergy costing (SPECO) method to evaluate the level of the cost caused by exergy destruction. The main technological findings are that the most important contribution impact lies with the solar field, which reports a value of 79%; and the materials with the vi highest impact are: steel (47%), molten salt (25%) and synthetic oil (21%). The “Human Health” damage category presents the highest impact (69%) followed by the “Resource” damage category (24%). In addition, the highest exergy demand is linked to the steel (47%); and there is a considerable exergetic demand related to the molten salt and synthetic oil with values of 25% and 19%, respectively. Finally, in the comparison with fossil fuel power plants (NGCC and Oil), the CSP plant presents the lowest environmental impact, while the worst environmental performance is reported to the oil power plant followed by NGCC plant. The solar field presents the largest value of cost rate, where the boiler is a component with the highest cost rate among the power cycle components. The thermal storage allows the CSP plants to overcome solar irradiation transients, to respond to electricity demand independent of weather conditions, and to extend electricity production beyond the availability of daylight. Numerical analysis of the thermal transient response of a thermocline storage tank is carried out for the charging phase. The system of equations describing the numerical model is solved by using time-implicit and space-backward finite differences and which encoded within the Matlab environment. The analysis presented the following findings: the predictions agree well with the experiments for the time evolution of the thermocline region, particularly for the regions away from the top-inlet. The deviations observed in the near-region of the inlet are most likely due to the high-level of turbulence in this region due to the localized level of mixing resulting; a simple analytical model to take into consideration this increased turbulence level was developed and it leads to some improvement of the predictions; this approach requires practically no additional computational effort and it relates the effective thermal diffusivity to the mean effective velocity of the fluid at each particular height of the system. Altogether the study indicates that the selected parabolic trough-CSP plant has the edge over alternative competing technologies for locations where DNI is high and where land usage is not an issue, such as the shoreline of Libya.

He has been passionately developing tools to enable students and teachers to better understand the theoretical concepts behind classical robotics and computer vision through easy and intuitive simulation and visualization. The article described an open-source toolbox for machine vision called Machine Vision Toolbox (MVT). MVT includes more than 60 functions including image file reading and writing, acquisition, display, filtering, blob, point and line feature extraction, mathematical morphology, homographies, visual Jacobians, camera calibration, and color space conversion. MVT can be used for research into machine vision but is also versatile enough to be usable for real-time work and even control. MVT, combined with MATLAB and a model workstation computer, is a useful and convenient environment for the investigation of machine vision algorithms. The article illustrated the use of a subset of toolbox functions for some typical problems and described MVT operations including the simulation of a complete image-based visual servo system.

The practice of robotics and computer vision each involve the application of computational algorithms to data. The research community has developed a very large body of algorithms but for a newcomer to the field this can be quite daunting. For more than 10 years the author has maintained two open-source MATLAB® Toolboxes, one for robotics and one for vision. They provide implementations of many important algorithms and allow users to work with real problems, not just trivial examples. This new book makes the fundamental algorithms of robotics, vision and control accessible to all. It weaves together theory, algorithms and examples in a narrative that covers robotics and computer vision separately and together. Using the latest versions of the Toolboxes the author shows how complex problems can be decomposed and solved using just a few simple lines of code. The topics covered are guided by real problems observed by the author over many years as a practitioner of both robotics and computer vision. It is written in a light but informative style, it is easy to read and absorb, and includes over 1000 MATLAB® and Simulink® examples and figures. The book is a real walk through the fundamentals of mobile robots, navigation, localization, arm-robot kinematics, dynamics and joint level control, then camera models, image processing, feature extraction and multi-view geometry, and finally bringing it all together with an extensive discussion of visual servo systems.

The Toolbox, combined with MATLAB ® and a modern workstation computer, is a useful and convenient environment for investigation of machine vision algorithms. For modest image sizes the processing rate can be sufficiently ``real-time'' to allow for closed-loop control. Focus of attention methods such as dynamic windowing (not provided) can be used to increase the processing rate. With input from a firewire or web camera (support provided) and output to a robot (not provided) it would be possible to implement a visual servo system entirely in MATLAB. Provides many functions that are useful in machine vision and vision-based control. Useful for photometry, photogrammetry, colorimetry. It includes over 100 functions spanning operations such as image file reading and writing, acquisition, display, filtering, blob, point and line feature extraction, mathematical morphology, homographies, visual Jacobians, camera calibration and color space conversion.
