We report the observed low temperature spin glass like feature in the optimally doped La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 ferromagnetic system. The characteristic of glassy behavior has been identified by noting (i) the frequency-dependent shift of the low temperature hump position in the out of phase ac susceptibility component; (ii) evolution of freezing temperature with dc biasing field that adheres to de Almeida-Thouless relation; (iii) memory effect; and (iv) sluggish magnetic relaxation. The results of magnetic measurements demonstrate that neither the inter-cluster interaction nor the spin disorder at the interface between ferromagnetic clusters is responsible for the manifestation of such collective glassy behavior. Rather, it is believed to arise from a distinct cluster glass like phase that possibly coexists with the dominant ferromagnetic phase. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3684610]

The phenomenon of resistive switching (RS) has been demonstrated in several non-magnetic and some magnetic oxide systems, however the ``magnetic'' aspect of magnetic oxides has not been emphasized especially in terms of low field tunability. In our work, we examined the CoFe2O4/La0.66Sr0.34MnO3 all-magnetic oxide interface system for RS and discovered a very sharp (bipolar) transition at room temperature that can be gated with high sensitivity by low magnetic fields (similar to 0-100 mT). By using a number of characterizations, we show that this is an interface effect, which may open up interesting directions for manipulation of the RS phenomenon. We have investigated the structural evolution of La0.2Sr0.8MnO3 using temperature dependent high resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction technique. In a wide temperature range, La0.2Sr0.8MnO3 reveals nanoscale structural inhomogeneity consisting of cubic and tetragonal phases. The present results suggest that domains of nanometer size of the tetragonal (low temperature) phase start nucleating in the cubic (high temperature) phase even above the Neel temperature (T-N). The tetragonal phase fraction increases substantially below T-N. Detailed analysis suggests that the twinned phase is tetragonal, orbital ordered, and insulating. At temperatures below 170 K, a small amount of the cubic phase is retained. The present results reveal the significance of the connectivity between the nanoscale structural phase separation with the physical properties.

We demonstrate the distinct glassy transport phenomena associated with the phase separated and spin-glass-like phases of La0.85Sr0.15CoO3, prepared under different heat-treatment conditions. The low-temperature annealed (phase-separated) sample, exhibits a small change in resistance, with evolution of time, as compared to the high-temperature annealed (spin glass) one. However, the resistance change as a function of time, in both cases, is well described by a stretched exponential fit, signifying the slow dynamics. Moreover, the ultraviolet spectroscopy study evidences a relatively higher density of states in the vicinity of EF for low-temperature annealed sample and this correctly points to its less semiconducting behavior.

Here, we present a comprehensive investigation of the dc magnetization and magnetotransport studies on La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 single crystals grown by the optical float zone method. The spin freezing temperature in the ac susceptibility study shifts to lower value at higher dc field and this is well described by the de Almeida-Thouless line which is the characteristic of SG behavior. The Magnetotransport study shows that the sample exhibits a huge negative MR of similar to 70% at 10 K which monotonically decreases with the increase in temperature. Besides, the magnetization and the resistivity relaxation give strong indication that the MR scales with sample's magnetization. In essence, all the present experimental findings evidence the SG behavior of La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 single crystals.

We report the evidence for the anisotropic magnetoimpedance behavior in (001) oriented La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) thin films, in low frequency-low magnetic field regime. (001) oriented LSMO thin films were deposited using pulsed laser deposition and characterized with X-ray diffraction and temperature dependent magnetization studies. In the in-plain configuration, an ac magnetoresistance (MRac) of similar to -0.5% was observed at 1000 Oe, at 100 Hz frequency in these films. The MRac was found to decrease with increase in frequency. We observe increases in MRac at low frequency, indicating major contribution for change of permeability from domain wall motion. At higher frequencies, it decreases due to decrease in transverse permeability, resulting from dampening of domain wall motion. Out-of-plane configuration showed MRac similar to 5.5% at 1000 Oe, at 100 Hz frequency. The MRac turned from positive to negative with increase in frequency in out-of-plane configuration. These changes are attributed to the change in permeability of the film with the frequency and applied magnetic field.

A comprehensive magnetic study has been carried out on the two sets of La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 samples with a view to understand the origin of low temperature glassiness in the ferromagnetic state. The samples prepared by the conventional solid-state synthesis method show a low temperature shoulder in both dc magnetization as well as in the ac susceptibility measurements, which exhibit characteristics of glassiness such as the frequency dependence and memory effect. These observations suggest the existence of a distinct low temperature cluster-glass like phase within dominant ferromagnetic phase. But, once the same sample is properly homogenized by repeated grinding and annealing process, the low temperature glassy phase disappears, and it shows a pure ferromagnetic behavior. Our comparative study clearly reveals that the reentrant spin-glass like nature is not intrinsic to La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 system, in fact this is an outcome of the compositional inhomogeneity.

Uniform La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 (LSMO) nanotubes of an average diameter 180 nm were synthesized by a modified sol-gel method employing nanochannel porous anodic alumina templates. The nanotubes were characterized chemically and structurally by XRD, SEM, EDX, and TEM. Postannealed (700 degrees C for 1 h hour) nanotubes were found to be polycrystalline from XRD and SAED studies. To get further insight into the nanotube structure, HRTEM studies were done, which revealed that obtained LSMO nanotubes were structurally constituted with nanoparticles of 3-12 nm size. These constituent nanoparticles were randomly aligned and self-knitted to build the nanotube wall. Investigation of magnetic properties at this structured nanoscale revealed remarkable irreversibility between the zero field cooling (ZFC) and field cooling (FC) magnetization curves accompanied with a peak in the ZFC curve indicating spin-glass-like behavior. Structural defects and compositional variations at surfaces and grain-boundaries of constituent nanoparticles might be responsible for this anomalous magnetic behavior.

Epitaxial La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (LSCO) thin films are grown on LaAlO3 (100) and SrTiO3 (100) substrates by pulsed laser ablation. By tuning the growth parameters, we are able to enhance the ferromagnetic transition temperature (T-C) up to 262 K as evident from ac susceptibility, dc magnetization, and resistivity measurements. The magnitude of T-C is the same as that for the bulk stoichiometric LSCO illustrating the high quality of the grown films. Detailed structural analysis clearly reveals that the induced strain in the LSCO film has no role behind this enhancement; in fact, the determining factor is the oxygen stoichiometry. The films also exhibit ageing effect as the T-C decreases with time. This is considered in terms of gradual change in the oxygen stoichiometry through diffusion process as the time progresses. We report results of the magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements down to very low fields on a single crystal of the perovskite manganite, La-0.82 Ca-0.18 MnO3. This composition falls in the intriguing ferromagnetic insulator region of the manganite phase diagram. In contrast to earlier beliefs, our investigations reveal that magnetically (and in every other sense), this is a single- phase system with a ferromagnetic ordering temperature of around 170 K. However, this ferromagnetic state is magnetically frustrated, and the system exhibits pronounced glassy dynamics below 90 K. Based on measured dynamical properties, we propose that this quasi-long-ranged ferromagnetic phase, and the associated superspin glass behavior, is the true magnetic state of the system, rather than being a macroscopic mixture of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases, as often suggested. Our results provide an understanding of the quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetic insulator to a ferromagnetic metal via this ferromagnetic state as a function of x in La1-xCaxMnO3, in terms of the possible formation of magnetic polarons.
Preferential polarization and its reversal in polycrystalline BiFeO3/La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 heterostructures
Resumo:
Polycrystalline BiFeO3 thin films were grown on La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 buffered Pt (200)/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates under different oxygen partial pressures (10, 25, 50 and 100 mTorr) by puked laser ablation. Piezo-response Force Microscopy and Piezo-Force Spectroscopy have shown that all the films are ferroelectric in nature with locally switchable domains. It has also revealed a preferential downward domain orientation in as-grown films grown under lower oxygen partial pressure (10 and 25 mTorr) with a reversal of preferential domain orientation as the oxygen partial pressure is increased to 100 mTorr during laser ablation. Such phenomena are atypical of multi-grained polycrystalline ferroelectric films and have been discussed On the basis of detect formation with changing growth conditions. For the 50 mTorr grown film, asymmetric domain stability and retention during write-read studies has been observed which is attributed to grain-size-related defect concentration, affecting pinning centres that inhibit domain wall motion. In this communication, we report the results of the studies on structural, microstructural, transport and magnetotransport behavior of L0.8-xPr0.2SrxMnO3 (LPSMO) (x=0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) manganite films grown on (100) single crystalline SrTiO3 (STO) substrate using low cost chemical solution deposition (CSD) method. Films with similar compositions were also grown using sophisticated pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique and results of structural and transport studies obtained for CSD grown films were compared with PLD grown films. Structural studies show that all the CSD and PLD grown films possess single crystalline nature with compressive and tensile strain, respectively. Surface morphology, studied using atomic force microscope (AFM), reveals the island like grain morphology in CSD grown films while PLD grown films possess smooth film surfaces. Carrier density dependent transport properties of the films have been discussed in the context of zener double exchange (ZDE) mechanism. Lower resistivity and higher transition temperature (T-p) observed in CSD grown films as compared to PLD grown films have been discussed in the light of structural strain and surface morphology of the films. Various models and mechanisms have been employed to understand the charge transport in CSD and PLD grown films. Also, observation of low temperature resistivity minima behavior in all the CSD and PLD grown LPSMO films has been explained in the context of electron-electron scattering mechanism. We report the remarkable phase separation behavior in La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 doped with Bi3+ ion at La site. The temperature dependent resistivity and magnetization of La0.67-xBixSr0.33MnO3 (x>0) show the presence of phase separation of ferromagnetic metallic and charge ordered antiferromagnetic insulating phases. Markedly, the field dependant magnetization studies of La0.67-xBixSr0.33MnO3 (x=0.3) show the metamagnetic nature of ferromagnetic metallic state implying the competition of coexisting ferromagnetic metallic and charge ordered antiferromagnetic phases. The electron spin resonance and exchange bias studies of La0.67-xBixSr0.33MnO3 (x=0.4 and 0.5) substantiate the coexistence of ferromagnetic clusters in antiferromagnetic matrix. We report the transition from robust ferromagnetism to a spin- glass state in nanoparticulate La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 through solid solution with BaTiO3. The field- and temperature-dependent magnetization and the frequency-dependent ac magnetic susceptibility measurements strongly indicate the existence of a spin- glass state in the system, which is further confirmed from memory effect measurements. The breaking of long-range ordering into short-range magnetic domains is further investigated using density-functional calculations. We show that Ti ions remain magnetically inactive due to insufficient electron leakage from La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 to the otherwise unoccupied Ti-d states. This results in the absence of a Mn-Ti-Mn spin exchange interaction and hence the breaking of the long-range ordering. Total-energy calculations suggest that the segregation of nonmagnetic Ti ions leads to the formation of short-range ferromagnetic Mn domains.
