This research emerges from the world-wide problematic concerning student's failure. It particularly analyzes the meta-cognitive competences in the writing process of this population. Based on Flavell's (1992) viewpoint about meta-cognition and the socio-cognitive approach of self-regulation, two variables were measured: meta-cognitive knowledge and self-regulation strategies. A qualitative study was conducted on a sample of 12 French students at first year university. This study uses a specific technique of interview known as "explicitation interview". The data analysis included the categorization, codification and quantification of the information obtained with the interviews. In conclusion, even though the students had metacognitive knowledge related to the written tasks, they did not show strategies that could help to go beyond the descriptive modality of written discourses by taking into account the readers' expectations. Their writing processes focused on transcription of ideas with little control on the planning and revision phases.

Educating health professionals implies the challenge of creating and developing an inquiring mind, ready to be in a state of permanent questioning. For this purpose, it is fundamental to generate a positive attitude toward the generation of knowledge and science. Objective: to determine the attitude toward science and the scientific method in undergraduate students of health sciences. Materials and methods: a cross-sectional study was made by applying a self-administered survey, excluding those who were transferred from other universities and repeated. The attitude toward science and the scientific method were valued using the scale validated and published by Hren, which contains three domains: value of scientific knowledge, value of scientific methodology, and value of science for health professions. Results: 362 students were included, 86,6% of them graded the attitude toward scientific knowledge above 135 points, neutral scale value. Similar scores were registered in the domains value of scientific knowlede for the human dimension of the students and value of science for health professions. 91,4% of the students graded the value of scientific methodology below 48 points. Conclusions: the favorable attitude of the students can be explained by the contact that they have with the scientific method since the beginning of their studies and its concordance with the evolution of science. The domain value of scientific methodology obtained the lowest grade on the part of the students, which could be related to the lack of knowledge about scientific methodology.

Aim: To review the current knowledge about suicide in cancer patients. Method: We searchedspecialized databases using keywords for articles published in the last two decades (1990-2010),and compiled and reviewed them in order to: indicate the prevalence of suicide in cancer patientsworldwide and in Colombia, differentiating the data by sex and age; establish the types of cancerthat are associated with suicide, identify risk factors for committing or considering suicide andpresent the strategies of professional and psychological intervention directed at cancer patientswith suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. The present article is a review of the information on thesubject. Results: We found that: in cancer patients, the suicide rate is two times higher thanin the general population; depression, suicidal ideation and location of cancer are some of therisk factors for suicide, and there is a lack of published guidelines for professional managementof the suicidal patient with cancer. Conclusion: The need to carry out research on the topic ofsuicide in cancer patients was established.

Globalization and liberalization of the economies have produced among others drastic effects on the human mobility, generating confusion, enhancing discrimination and a lack of respect to the rights of several migrant collectives. In this article we analyse several challenges for the study of these phenomena, based on the case of the neglected health rights of Colombian women, who have been forced to displace by the country's internal conflict, and are thus pushed to cross the border to Ecuador. The article identifies several knowledge gaps that could allow and advance a better understanding of these critical subjects. The paper - a think piece -is based upon a general review of documents and studies on the relation between migration and health. The supporting theory on the research comes from international organisations such as the WHO and IOM, NGOs, grass-roots organisations and academic research. This paper shows the need for focusing on the reality of supra states which globalization has generated, and t e urgency of securing the access to essential health preconditions to migrant populations. These issues can no longer be neglected and should be included on agendas at international level, widening the approach of programs to the displaced/immigrant population by taking into account the need to ensure the essential health preconditions (equity), prevention, and protection. Further, it is clear that women and children require a better protection with enhanced prevention and responding measures to sexual abuse, stigmatisation, violence and the respect of their rights.

El presente trabajo describe la identidad organizacional de una antigua Universidad Colombiana – Universidad del Rosario – desde 1890 hasta 1991. Esta descripción detallada se realizó con el propósito de hacer preguntas y señalar algunos de los desafíos que esta universidad se encontrará al educar las nuevas generaciones de la nación para la sociedad del conocimiento. Este documento también describe brevemente las características más importantes de la sociedad del conocimiento, así como las características de las universidades que desarrollan sus actividades en ella. También, se hace una síntesis sobre el estado de desarrollo de la sociedad del conocimiento en Colombia. Finalmente, se extraen algunas conclusiones a acerca de las oportunidades de cambio que tendrá la identidad Rosarista para continuar siendo relevante en el siglo XXI.

L'innovazione delle tecnologie di sequenziamento negli ultimi anni ha reso possibile la catalogazione delle varianti genetiche nei campioni umani, portando nuove scoperte e comprensioni nella ricerca medica, farmaceutica, dell'evoluzione e negli studi sulla popolazione. La quantità di sequenze prodotta è molto cospicua, e per giungere all'identificazione delle varianti sono necessari diversi stadi di elaborazione delle informazioni genetiche in cui, ad ogni passo, vengono generate ulteriori informazioni. Insieme a questa immensa accumulazione di dati, è nata la necessità da parte della comunità scientifica di organizzare i dati in repository, dapprima solo per condividere i risultati delle ricerche, poi per permettere studi statistici direttamente sui dati genetici. Gli studi su larga scala coinvolgono quantità di dati nell'ordine dei petabyte, il cui mantenimento continua a rappresentare una sfida per le infrastrutture. Per la varietà e la quantità di dati prodotti, i database giocano un ruolo di primaria importanza in questa sfida. Modelli e organizzazione dei dati in questo campo possono fare la differenza non soltanto per la scalabilità, ma anche e soprattutto per la predisposizione al data mining. Infatti, la memorizzazione di questi dati in file con formati quasi-standard, la dimensione di questi file, e i requisiti computazionali richiesti, rendono difficile la scrittura di software di analisi efficienti e scoraggiano studi su larga scala e su dati eterogenei. Prima di progettare il database si è perciò studiata l’evoluzione, negli ultimi vent’anni, dei formati quasi-standard per i flat file biologici, contenenti metadati eterogenei e sequenze nucleotidiche vere e proprie, con record privi di relazioni strutturali. Recentemente questa evoluzione è culminata nell’utilizzo dello standard XML, ma i flat file delimitati continuano a essere gli standard più supportati da tools e piattaforme online. È seguita poi un’analisi dell’organizzazione interna dei dati per i database biologici pubblici. Queste basi di dati contengono geni, varianti genetiche, strutture proteiche, ontologie fenotipiche, relazioni tra malattie e geni, relazioni tra farmaci e geni. Tra i database pubblici studiati rientrano OMIM, Entrez, KEGG, UniProt, GO. L'obiettivo principale nello studio e nella modellazione del database genetico è stato quello di strutturare i dati in modo da integrare insieme i dati eterogenei prodotti e rendere computazionalmente possibili i processi di data mining. La scelta di tecnologia Hadoop/MapReduce risulta in questo caso particolarmente incisiva, per la scalabilità garantita e per l’efficienza nelle analisi statistiche più complesse e parallele, come quelle riguardanti le varianti alleliche multi-locus.

Over the past few years many studies have been published on the costs and economic benefits of journal business models. Early studies considered only the costs incurred in publishing traditional journals made available for purchase on a subscription or licensing business model. As the open access business model became available, some studies also covered the cost of making research articles available in open access journals. More recent studies have taken a broader perspective, looking at the position of journal publishers in the market and their business models in the context of the economic benefits from research dissemination. This briefing paper also looks at the outcomes of the broadly cited RIN study and various national studies performed by John Houghton. All links provided in footnotes in this Briefing Paper are to studies available in open access.

In the past decade, systems that extract information from millions of Internet documents have become commonplace. Knowledge graphs -- structured knowledge bases that describe entities, their attributes and the relationships between them -- are a powerful tool for understanding and organizing this vast amount of information. However, a significant obstacle to knowledge graph construction is the unreliability of the extracted information, due to noise and ambiguity in the underlying data or errors made by the extraction system and the complexity of reasoning about the dependencies between these noisy extractions. My dissertation addresses these challenges by exploiting the interdependencies between facts to improve the quality of the knowledge graph in a scalable framework. I introduce a new approach called knowledge graph identification (KGI), which resolves the entities, attributes and relationships in the knowledge graph by incorporating uncertain extractions from multiple sources, entity co-references, and ontological constraints. I define a probability distribution over possible knowledge graphs and infer the most probable knowledge graph using a combination of probabilistic and logical reasoning. Such probabilistic models are frequently dismissed due to scalability concerns, but my implementation of KGI maintains tractable performance on large problems through the use of hinge-loss Markov random fields, which have a convex inference objective. This allows the inference of large knowledge graphs using 4M facts and 20M ground constraints in 2 hours. To further scale the solution, I develop a distributed approach to the KGI problem which runs in parallel across multiple machines, reducing inference time by 90%. Finally, I extend my model to the streaming setting, where a knowledge graph is continuously updated by incorporating newly extracted facts. I devise a general approach for approximately updating inference in convex probabilistic models, and quantify the approximation error by defining and bounding inference regret for online models. Together, my work retains the attractive features of probabilistic models while providing the scalability necessary for large-scale knowledge graph construction. These models have been applied on a number of real-world knowledge graph projects, including the NELL project at Carnegie Mellon and the Google Knowledge Graph.

“Multiraciality Enters the University: Mixed Race Identity and Knowledge Production in Higher Education,” explores how the category of “mixed race” has underpinned university politics in California, through student organizing, admissions debates, and the development of a new field of study. By treating the concept of privatization as central to both multiraciality and the neoliberal university, this project asks how and in what capacity has the discourses of multiracialism and the growing recognition of mixed race student populations shaped administrative, social, and academic debates at the state’s flagship universities—the University of California at Berkeley and Los Angeles. This project argues that the mixed race population symbolizing so-called “post-racial societies” is fundamentally attached to the concept of self-authorship, which can work to challenge the rights and resources for college students of color. Through a close reading of texts, including archival materials, policy and media debates, and interviews, I assert that the contemporary deployment of mixed race within the US academy represents a particularly post-civil rights development, undergirded by a genealogy of U.S. liberal individualism. This project ultimately reveals the pressing need to rethink ways to disrupt institutionalized racism in the new millennium.
