Raman fibre lasers and converters using the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in optical fibre waveguide are attractive for many applications ranging from telecommunications to bio-medical applications [1]. Multiple-wavelength Raman laser sources emitting at two and more wavelengths have been proposed to increase amplification spectrum of Raman fibre amplifiers and to improve noise characteristics [2,3]. Typically, a single fibre waveguide is used in such devices while multi-wavelength generation is achieved by employing corresponding number of fibre Bragg grating (FBG) pairs forming laser resonator. This approach, being rather practical, however, might not provide a good level of cross coherence between radiation generated at different wavelengths due to difference in FBGs and random phase fluctuations between the two wavelengths. In this work we examine a scheme of two-wavelength Raman fibre laser with high-Q cavity based on spectral intracavity broadening [3]. We demonstrate feasibility of such configuration and perform numerical analysis clarifying laser operation using an amplitude propagation equation model that accounts for all key physical effects in nonlinear fibre: dispersion, Kerr nonlinearity, Raman gain, depletion of the Raman pump wave and fibre losses. The key idea behind this scheme is to take advantage of the spectral broadening that occurs in optical fibre at high powers. The effect of spectral broadening leads to effective decrease of the FBGs reflectivity and enables generation of two waves in one-stage Raman laser. The output spectrum in the considered high-Q cavity scheme corresponds to two peaks with 0.2 - 1 nm distance between them. © 2011 IEEE.

Using the numerical solution of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation and a variational method, it is shown that (3+1)-dimensional spatiotemporal optical solitons, known as light bullets, can be stabilized in a layered Kerr medium with sign-changing nonlinearity along the propagation direction.

We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally compensation for positive Kerr phase shifts with negative phases generated by cascade quadratic processes. Experiments show correction of small-scale self-focusing and whole-beam self-focusing in the spatial domain and self-phase modulation in the temporal domain. (C) 2001 Optical Society of America.

The results of the femtosecond optical heterodyne detection of optical Kerr effect at 805 am with the 80 fs ultrafast pulses in amorphous Ge10As40S30Se20 film is reported in this Letter. The film shows an optical nonlinear response of 200 fs under ultrafast 80 fs-pulse excitation, and the values of real and imaginary parts of nonlinear susceptibility chi((3)) were 9.0 x 10(-12) esu and -4.0 x 10(-12) esu respectively. The large third-order nonlinearity and ultrafast response are attributed to the ultrafast distortion of the electron orbits surrounding the average positions of the nucleus of Ge, As, S and Se atoms. This Ge10As40S30Se20 chalcogenide glass would be expected as a promising material for optical switching technique.

We suggest a scheme to generate a macroscopic superposition state ("Schrodinger cat state") of a free-propagating optical field using a beam splitter, homodyne measurement, and a very small Kerr nonlinear effect. Our scheme makes it possible to reduce considerably the required nonlinear effect to generate an optical cat state using simple and efficient optical elements.

We analyse the possibilities for quantum state engineering offered by a model for Kerr-type nonlinearity enhanced by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), which was recently proposed by Petrosyan and Kurizki [2002, Phys. Rev. A, 65, 33833]. We go beyond the semiclassical treatment and derive a quantum version of the model with both a full Hamiltonian approach and an analysis in terms of dressed states. The preparation of an entangled coherent state via a cross-phase modulation effect is demonstrated. We briefly show that the violation of locality for such an entangled coherent state is robust against low detection efficiency. Finally, we investigate the possibility of a bi-chromatic photon blockade realized via the interaction of a low density beam of atoms with a bi-modal electromagnetic cavity which is externally driven. We show the effectiveness of the blockade effect even when more than a single atom is inside the cavity. The possibility to control two different cavity modes allows some insights into the generation of an entangled state of cavity modes.

We report on the ultrafast nonlinearity of antimony polyphosphate glasses measured using the Kerr shutter technique. The nonlinear refractive index, n(2), was (1.1+/-0.2)x10(-14) cm(2)/W at 800 nm, and enhancement of n(2) by approximate to80% was observed by adding 10% of lead oxide in the glass composition. The full width at half-maximum of the third-order correlation signal was 150 fs, which implies a fast response of the samples (less than or equal to100 fs). Nonlinear absorption was negligible in the range of intensities used. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

We report on the nonlinear (NL) optical properties of glassy TeO2-GeO2-K2O-Bi2O3 at lambda = 800 nm and lambda = 1,064 nm. Using the Kerr gate technique with a laser delivering 150 fs pulses at 800 nm, we demonstrated the fast NL response of the samples. The modulus of the NL refractive index, n (2), at 800 nm was similar to 10(-15) cm(2)/W. The Z-scan technique was used to determine n (2) a parts per thousand +10(-15) cm(2)/W, at 1,064 nm with pulses of 17 ps. The two-photon absorption coefficient, alpha (2), was smaller than the minimum that we can measure (< 0.003 cm/GW). The figure of merit n (2)/alpha (2) lambda was calculated and indicates that this glass composition has large potential to be used for all-optical switching.

We introduce the notion of a PT-symmetric dimer with a chi((2)) nonlinearity. Similarly to the Kerr case, we argue that such a nonlinearity should be accessible in a pair of optical waveguides with quadratic nonlinearity and gain and loss, respectively. An interesting feature of the problem is that because of the two harmonics, there exist in general two distinct gain and loss parameters, different values of which are considered herein. We find a number of traits that appear to be absent in the more standard cubic case. For instance, bifurcations of nonlinear modes from the linear solutions occur in two different ways depending on whether the first-or the second-harmonic amplitude is vanishing in the underlying linear eigenvector. Moreover, a host of interesting bifurcation phenomena appear to occur, including saddle-center and pitchfork bifurcations which our parametric variations elucidate. The existence and stability analysis of the stationary solutions is corroborated by numerical time-evolution simulations exploring the evolution of the different configurations, when unstable.

In approximation of weak heating influence of electron heating in the high-frequency surface wave field on propagation of surface wave (heating nonlinearity) is considered. It is shown that high-frequency surface wave propagates in direction perpendicular to the external magnetic field at the semiconductor-metal interface. A nonlinear dispersion equation is obtained and studied that allows to make conclusions about the contribution of heating nonlinearity to nonlinear process of considered interaction.
