Sm3+-doped yttrium aluminum perovskite (YAP) single crystal was grown by Czochralski (CZ) method. The absorption and fluorescence spectra along the crystallographic axis b were measured at room temperature. Judd-Ofelt theory was used to calculate the intensity parameters (Omega(t)), the spontaneous emission probability, the branching ratio and the radiative lifetime of the state (4)G(5/2). The peak emission cross-sections were also estimated at 567, 607, and 648 nm wavelengths. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The 2 at.% Sm:GdVO4 crystal was grown by the Czochralski method. The segregation coefficient of Sm3+ ion in this crystal is 0.98. The crystal structure of the Sm:GdVO4 crystal was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Judd-Ofelt theory was used to calculate the intensity parameters (Omega(i)), the spontaneous emission probability, the luminary branching ratio and the radiative lifetime of the state (4)G(5/2). The stimulated emission cross-sections at 567, 604 and 646 nm are calculated to be 5.92 x 10(-21), 7.62 x 10(-21) and 5.88 x 10(-21) cm(2), respectively. The emission cross-section at 604 nm is 4.4 times lager than that in Sm: YAP at 607 nm. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A novel neodymium pentafluoropropionate binuclear complex, Nd(C(2)F(5)COO)(3)Dipy (Dipy: 2,2'-dipyridyl), was synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. At a concentration of 0.2 M in DMSO-d(6), the Judd-Ofelt parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4), Omega(6)) were calculated from the UV-Vis spectrum. According to the small value of Omega(2) and the zero splitting energy of (4)F/(3/2) level, a symmetric ligand field of the complex was confirmed in DMSO-d(6). Strong emission of the complex in DMSO-d(6) at 1057 nm with a decay time about 1.3 mu s were detected when excited at 800 nm pumped by a laser diode. The stimulated emission cross-section of (4)F(3/2) -> (4)I(11/2) fluorescence transition was 2.36 x 10 (20) cm(2) and comparable with some laser glasses, which indicated good radiative properties of this neodymium pentafluoropropionate binuclear complex in liquid matrix. It is shown that ionic liquids are promising solvents for near-infrared emitting lanthanide complexes, because ionic liquids are polar non-coordinating solvents that can solubilize lanthanide complexes. Neodymium(III) tosylate, bromide, triflate and sulfonylimide complexes were dissolved in 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium ionic liquids that contain the same anion as the neodymium(III) complexes. Near-infrared luminescence spectra of these neodymium(III) salts were measured by direct excitation of the neodymium(III) ion. The absorption spectra show detailed crystal-field fine structure and Judd-Ofelt parameters have been determined. Intense near-infrared luminescence was observed upon ligand excitation for neodymium(III) complexes with 1,10-phenanthroline or beta-diketonate ligands. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Tungstate fluorophosphate glasses of good optical quality were synthesized by fusion of the components and casting under air atmosphere. The absorption spectra from near-infrared to visible were obtained and the Judd-Ofelt parameters determined from the absorption bands. Transition probabilities, excited state lifetimes and transition branching ratios, were, determined from the measurements. Pumping with a 354.7 nm beam from a pulsed laser. resulted in emission at 450 nm. due to transition D-1(2)-->F-3(4) in Tm3+ ions and a broadband emission centered at approximate to 550 nm attributed to the glass matrix. When pumping at 650 nm, two emission bands at 450 nm (D-1(2)-->F-3(4)) and at 790 nm (H-3(4)-->H-3(6)) were observed. Excitation spectra were also obtained in order to understand the origin of both emissions. Theoretical and experimental lifetimes were determined and,the results were explained in terms of multiphonon relaxation. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

Glass formation in the pseudo ternary system ZnF2-GdF3-BaF2-InF3 and other complex systems stabilized by NaF, CaF2, AlF3 and YF3 have been investigated. Samples with greater stability have been prepared and their properties measured. Optical absorption and emission spectra of Gd3+ ions doped glasses with 2, 4, 10 and 20% concentrations have been measured. Using the Judd-Ofelt theory and the experimental oscillator strengths, the Judd-Ofelt parameters have been calculated. The emission of Gd3+ ions from 6I and 6P has been detected and the lifetime has been measured.

Transparent glass ceramics containing β-PbF2:Er 3+ nanocrystals were obtained through appropriate thermal treatments of a glass of molar composition 60PbGeO3-10PbF2-30CdF 2 doped with 0.5 mol% Er3+. Their optical properties, as well as upconversion processes among erbium ions in the glass and glass ceramic matrix were studied. From absorption spectra, Judd-Ofelt parameters and radiative transition rates for several excited levels were calculated. Emission spectra in the visible and NIR regions were collected, and stimulated emission cross sections were obtained by McCumber theory for the 4F 13/2→4I15/2 transition at 1.5 μm. Red and green upconversion emissions were measured in glass and glass ceramics upon excitation at 980 nm; lifetimes were measured in order to assess the upconversion mechanisms.

The Ho:YAP crystal is grown by the Czochralski technique. The room-temperature polarized absorption spectra of Ho:YAP crystal was measured on a c-cut sample with 1 at% holmium. According to the obtained Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters Omega(2) = 1.42 x 10(-20) cm(2), Omega(4) = 2.92 x 10(-20) cm(2), and Omega(6) = 1.71 x 10(-20) cm(2), this paper calculated the fluorescence lifetime to be 6 ms for I-5(7) -> I-5(8) transition, and the integrated emission cross section to be 2.24 x 10(-18) cm(2). It investigates the room-temperature Ho:YAP laser end-pumped by a 1.91-mu m Tm:YLF laser. The maximum output power was 4.1 W when the incident 1.91-mu m pump power was 14.4W. The slope efficiency is 40.8%, corresponding to an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 28.4%. The Ho:YAP output wavelength was centred at 2118 nm with full width at half maximum of about 0.8 nm.

The absorption spectra of Er:YAG (YAG, yttrium-aluminium-garnet) crystals containing different concentrations of the trivalent erbium ion were measured and the spectral intensity parameters were calculated from these experimental spectra using the Judd-Ofelt model. The results indicate that the phenomenological intensity parameters, OMEGA(lambda) (lambda = 2, 4 and 6), vary as a function of the concentration of the Er3+ ion in the Er:YAG crystal, but no variation in the fluorescence-branching ratios as a function of the concentration of the Er3+ ion is found. An empirical formula is proposed to describe the relationship between the spectral intensity parameters and the Er3+ ion concentration in the Er:YAG crystal. The spectral intensity parameters exhibit a maximum in Er:YAG crystals containing about 1-1.5 at.% Er3+ ion. The effect of the Er3+ ion concentration on the spectral intensity parameters may be attributed to the inhomogeneous lattice distortion in the cell of the Er:YAG crystal caused by the dopant erbium ions.

In this work an analysis of the phenomenological Omega(lambda) intensity parameters for the Tm3+ ion in fluoroindate glass is made using the standard Judd-Ofelt theory, and a modified oscillator strength taking into account odd-order contributions is utilized. Different sets of phenomenological intensity parameters Omega(lambda) (lambda=1,2,3,4,5,6) are discussed. The set of better quality is used to analyze the influence of third-order effects through odd intensity parameters in the new approximation. Fluoroindate glasses of compositions (40-x)InF3-20ZnF(2)-20SrF(2)-16BaF(2)-2GdF(3)-2NaF-xTmF(3) with x=1, 2 and 3 mol% were prepared, and the absorption spectra at room temperature in the spectral range from 300 to 2500 nm were obtained. Syntheses of the following complexes are reported: LnX3·6L, LnX′3·4L, LnX″3·3L and Eu(NCS)3·3L, where Ln = Nd3+, Eu3+; L = hexamethylphosphoramide (hmpa); X = ClO4 -, PF6 -; X′ = NCS-, NO3 -, Br-, ClO4 -; X″=Cl-. Spectra of the complexes of Nd3+ (absorption) and Eu3+ (emission) in dichloromethane solutions were measured. The oscillator strengths of the Nd3+ f-f absorption bands within the 11 000-30 000 cm-1 region were determined and the τλ intensity parameters were obtained according to the Judd-Ofelt formalism. Covalency parameters were also determined for the Nd3+ complexes. The intensities relationship η21 of the 5D0→7F2 and 5D0→7F1 transitions of the Eu3+ was calculated. A good correlation between τ2 and the oscillator strength of the hypersensitive band of Nd3+ was found, as well as a correlation between τ2 and η21. There are only qualitative relations between τ2 and the covalency parameter. © 1991.

Spectral properties of Nd3+ and Dy3+ ions in different phosphate glasses were studied and several spectroscopic parameters were reported. Covalency of rare-earth-oxygen bond was studied in these phosphate glass matrices with the variation of modifier in host glass matrix Using Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters (Omega(2), Omega(4) and Omega(6)), radiative transition probabilities (A) and radiative lifetimes (tau(R)) of certain excited states of Nd3+ and Dy3+ ions are estimated in these glass matrices. From the magnitudes of branching ratios (beta(R)) and integrated absorption cross-sections (Sigma), certain transitions of both the ions are identified for laser excitation. From the emission spectra, peak stimulated emission cross-sections (sigma(P)) are evaluated for the emission transitions observed in all these phosphate glass matrices for both Nd3+ and Dy3+ ions. Optical absorption and photoluminescence studies have been carried out at room temperature in 25 R2O-25 GeO2-49.5 B2O3-0.5 Nd2O3 glass systems, (Composition in mol%, R= Li, Na, K and Rb). Judd Ofelt Intensity parameters and other parameters like Racah (E-1, E-2 and E-3), Slater-Condon-Shortley (F-2, F-4 and F-6) Spin-Orbit Coupling (xi(4f)) and Configuration Interaction (alpha,beta and gamma) for Nd3+ ion in the glass system are calculated. The variation of the 02 parameters are interpreted in terms of the covalency of the RE ion in the glass matrix. Further the hypersensitive transition I-4(9/2) -> (4)G(5/2), (2)G(7/2) is analyzed with respect to the intensity ratio I-L/I-S and is found to be dependent on the type of alkali in the glass matrix. The Photoluminescence studies do not show any appreciable shift in the peak emission wavelength of the F-4(3/2) to I-4(11/2) transition with the change in alkali type. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V.
