This work describes the synthesis of five O-silyloxy-1,3-thiazoles and their use as fast-response turn-on probes for fluoride ion detection in polar aprotic solvents and in aqueous cetyltrimethylammonium bromide micellar medium. The fluoride-triggered deprotection of these silyl ethers results in ca. 180-nm shifts in the fluorescence emission wavelengths. All compounds are suitable for the detection of fluoride ions with a detection limit in DMSO of 107 mol?L1; derivatives containing a 2-pyridyl moiety in the thiazole system are more efficient than those with a 3- or 4-pyridyl moiety. Typical anionic interferents, such as acetate or chloride, are not detected by O-silyloxy-1,3-thiazoles, making these compounds very specific for fluoride.

Tetradifon, a potentially carcinogenic and mutagenic pesticide, can contribute to environmental and human contamination when applied to green bell pepper crops. In this context, in this work, a reliable and sensitive method for determination of tetradifon in Brazilian green bell pepper samples involving a differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) technique on a glassy carbon electrode is proposed. The electrochemical behavior of tetradifon as followed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) suggests that its reduction occurs via an irreversible five-electron transfer vs. Ag vertical bar AgCl, KCl 3 M reference electrode. Very well-resolved diffusion controlled voltammetric peaks have been obtained in a supporting electrolyte solution composed of a mixture of 40% dimethylformamide (DMF), 30% methanol, and 30% NaOH 0.3 mol L-1 at -1.43, -1.57, -1.73, -1.88, and -2.05 V. The proposed DPV method has a good linear response in the 3.00 - 10.0 mu mol L-1 range, with a limit of detection (L.O.D) of 0.756 mu mol L-1 and 0.831 mu mol L-1 in the absence and in the presence of the matrix, respectively. Moreover, improved L.O.D results (0.607 mu mol L-1) have been achieved in the absence of DMF from the supporting electrolyte solution. Recovery has been evaluated in five commercial green bell pepper samples, and recovery percentages ranging from 91.0 to 109 have been obtained for tetradifon determinations. The proposed voltammetric method has also been tested for reproducibility, repeatability, and potential interferents, and the results obtained for these three analytical parameters are satisfactory for electroanalytical purposes. We present a fast, highly sensitive, and efficient potentiometric glucose biosensor based on functionalized InN quantum-dots (QDs). The InN QDs are grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The InN QDs are bio-chemically functionalized through physical adsorption of glucose oxidase (GOD). GOD enzyme-coated InN QDs based biosensor exhibits excellent linear glucose concentration dependent electrochemical response against an Ag/AgCl reference electrode over a wide logarithmic glucose concentration range (1 × 10−5 M to 1 × 10−2 M) with a high sensitivity of 80 mV/decade. It exhibits a fast response time of less than 2 s with good stability and reusability and shows negligible response to common interferents such as ascorbic acid and uric acid. The fabricated biosensor has full potential to be an attractive candidate for blood sugar concentration detection in clinical diagnoses.

Dopamine (DA) can be detected by electrochemical oxidation in conventional electrodes. However, the presence of other oxidizable species (interferents) usually present in physiological fluids at high concentrations (like ascorbic acid) makes very difficult its electrochemical detection. In the present work, glassy carbon electrodes have been modified with molecularly imprinted silica (MIS) films prepared by electroassisted deposition of sol–gel precursors. The production of MIS films was performed by adding the template molecule (DA) to the precursor sol. The molecular impression of silica was assessed showing a high coherency allowing a filtering capacity in the molecular scale. The MIS-modified electrodes present a high selectivity for the detection of DA in neutral or acidic solutions. The MIS-modified electrodes allow the amperometric determination of dopamine in solutions containing ascorbic acid with molar ratios lower than 1:50,000.

The Intoxilyzer 5000 was tested for calibration curve linearity for ethanol vapor concentration between 0.020 and 0.400g/210L with excellent linearity. Calibration error using reference solutions outside of the allowed concentration range, response to the same ethanol reference solution at different temperatures between 34 and 38$\sp\circ$C, and its response to eleven chemicals, 10 mixtures of two at the time, and one mixture of four chemicals potentially found in human breath have been evaluated. Potential interferents were chosen on the basis of their infrared signatures and the concentration range of solutions corresponding to the non-lethal blood concentration range of various volatile organic compounds reported in the literature. The result of this study indicates that the instrument calibrates with solutions outside the allowed range up to $\pm$10% of target value. Headspace FID dual column GC analysis was used to confirm the concentrations of the solutions. Increasing the temperature of the reference solution from 34 to 38$\sp\circ$C resulted in linear increases in instrument recorded ethanol readings with an average increase of 6.25%/$\sp\circ$C. Of the eleven chemicals studied during this experiment, six, isopropanol, toluene, methyl ethyl ketone, trichloroethylene, acetaldehyde, and methanol could reasonably interfere with the test at non-lethal reported blood concentration ranges, the mixtures of those six chemicals showed linear additive results with a combined effect of as much as a 0.080g/210L reading (Florida's legal limit) without any ethanol present. ^

The objective of this research is to develop nanoscale ultrasensitive transducers for detection of biological species at molecular level using carbon nanotubes as nanoelectrodes. Rapid detection of ultra low concentration or even single DNA molecules are essential for medical diagnosis and treatment, pharmaceutical applications, gene sequencing as well as forensic analysis. Here the use of functionalized single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) as nanoscale detection platform for rapid detection of single DNA molecules is demonstrated. The detection principle is based on obtaining electrical signal from a single amine terminated DNA molecule which is covalently bridged between two ends of an SWNT separated by a nanoscale gap. The synthesis, fabrication, chemical functionalization of nanoelectrodes and DNA attachment were optimized to perform reliable electrical characterization these molecules. Using this detection system fundamental study on charge transport in DNA molecule of both genomic and non genomic sequences is performed. We measured an electrical signal of about 30 pA through a hybridized DNA molecule of 80 base pair in length which encodes a portion of sequence of H5N1 gene of avian Influenza A virus. Due the dynamic nature of the DNA molecules the local environment such as ion concentration, pH and temperature significantly influence its physical properties. We observed a decrease in DNA conductance of about 33% in high vacuum conditions. The counterion variation was analyzed by changing the buffer from sodium acetate to tris(hydroxymethyl) aminomethane, which resulted in a two orders of magnitude increase in the conductivity of the DNA. The fabrication of large array of identical SWNT nanoelectrodes was achieved by using ultralong SWNTs. Using these nanoelectrode array we have investigated the sequence dependent charge transport in DNA. A systematic study performed on PolyG - PolyC sequence with varying number of intervening PolyA - PolyT pairs showed a decrease in electrical signal from 180 pA (PolyG - PolyC) to 30 pA with increasing number of the PolyA - PolyT pairs. This work also led to the development of ultrasensitive nanoelectrodes based on enzyme functionalized vertically aligned high density multiwalled CNTs for electrochemical detection of cholesterol. The nanoelectrodes exhibited selectively detection of cholesterol in the presence of common interferents found in human blood.

Beamforming is a technique widely used in various fields. With the aid of an antenna array, the beamforming aims to minimize the contribution of unknown interferents directions, while capturing the desired signal in a given direction. In this thesis are proposed beamforming techniques using Reinforcement Learning (RL) through the Q-Learning algorithm in antennas array. One proposal is to use RL to find the optimal policy selection between the beamforming (BF) and power control (PC) in order to better leverage the individual characteristics of each of them for a certain amount of Signal to Interference plus noise Ration (SINR). Another proposal is to use RL to determine the optimal policy between blind beamforming algorithm of CMA (Constant Modulus Algorithm) and DD (Decision Direct) in multipath environments. Results from simulations showed that the RL technique could be effective in achieving na optimal of switching between different techniques.
