This thesis is organised into three parts. In Part 1 relevant literature is reviewed and three critical components in the development of a cognitive approach to instruction are identified. These three components are considered to be the structure of the subject-matter, the learner's cognitive structures, and the learner's cognitive strategies which act as control and transfer devices between the instructional materials and the learner's cognitive structures. Six experiments are described in Part 2 which is divided into two methodologically distinct units. The three experiments of Unit 1 examined how learning from materials constructed from concept name by concept attribute matrices is influenced by learner or experimenter controlled sequence and organisation. The results suggested that the relationships between input organisation, output organisation and recall are complex and highlighted the importance of investigating organisational strategies at both acquisition and recall. The role of subjects previously acquired knowledge and skills in relation to the instructional material was considered to be an important factor. The three experiments of Unit 2 utilised a "diagramming relationships methodology" which was devised as one means of investigating the processes by which new information is assimilated into an individual's cognitive structure. The methodology was found to be useful in identifying cognitive strategies related to successful task performance. The results suggested that errors could be minimised and comprehension improved on the diagramming relationships task by instructing subjects in ways which induced successful processing operations. Part 3 of this thesis highlights salient issues raised by the experimental work within the framework outlined in Part 1 and discusses potential implications for future theoretical developments and research.

The implementation of collaborative planning and teaching models in ten flexibly scheduled elementary and middle school library media centers was studied to determine which factors facilitated the collaborative planning process and to learn what occurs when library media specialists (LMSs) and classroom teachers (CTs) plan together. In this qualitative study, 61 principals, CTs, and LMSs were interviewed on a range of topics including the principal's role, school climate, the value of team planning, the importance of information literacy instruction, and the ideal learning environment. Other data sources were observations, videotapes of planning sessions, and documents. This three-year school reform effort was funded by the Library Power Project to improve library programs, to encourage collaborative planning, and to increase curricular integration of information literacy skills instruction. ^ The findings included a description of typical planning sessions and the identification of several major factors which impacted the success of collaborative planning: the individuals involved, school climate, time for planning, the organization of the school, the facility and collection, and training. Of these factors, the characteristics and actions of the people involved were most critical to the implementation of the innovation. The LMS was the pivotal player and, in the views of CTs, principals, and LMSs themselves, must be knowledgeable about curriculum, the library collection, and instructional design and delivery; must be open and welcoming to CTs and use good interpersonal skills; and must be committed to information literacy instruction and willing to act as a change agent. The support of the principal was vital; in schools with successful programs, the principal served as an advocate for collaborative planning and information literacy instruction, provided financial support for the library program including clerical staff, and arranged for LMSs and CTs to have time during the school day to plan together. ^ CTs involved in positive planning partnerships with LMSs were flexible, were open to change, used a variety of instructional materials, expected students to be actively involved in their own learning, and were willing to team teach with LMSs. Most CTs planning with LMSs made lesson plans in advance and preferred to plan with others. Also, most CTs in this study planned with grade level or departmental groups, which expedited the delivery of information literacy instruction and the effective use of planning time. ^ Implications of the findings of this research project were discussed for individual schools, for school districts, and for colleges and universities training LMSs, CTs, and administrators. Suggestions for additional research were also included. ^

This study examines whether virtual reality (VR) is more superior to paper-based instructions in increasing the speed at which individuals learn a new assembly task. Specifically, the work seeks to quantify any learning benefits when individuals have been given the opportunity and compares the performance of two groups using virtual and hardcopy media types to pre-learn the task. A build experiment based on multiple builds of an aircraft panel showed that a group of people who pre-learned the assembly task using a VR environment completed their builds faster (average build time 29.5% lower). The VR group also made fewer references to instructional materials (average number of references 38% lower) and made fewer errors than a group using more traditional, hard copy instructions. These outcomes were more pronounced during build one with differences in build time and number of references showing limited statistical differences.

Nesta tese problematizamos o aprender, a partir do olhar dos estudantes do 7º e 8º anos, em uma escola da rede pública de ensino do município do Rio Grande/RS/Brasil. A escola, em 2011, optou por realizar um trabalho coletivo e cooperativo e modificou sua dinâmica de funcionamento transformando as salas de aula convencionais em Ambientes de Aprendizagem, nos quais os estudantes têm acesso a uma maior diversidade de recursos e a interação com os colegas é permanente, possibilitando o desenvolvimento de estratégias diferenciadas motivando o aluno a estabelecer relações entre o conhecimento escolar, a sua vida e o mundo. Nesta escola, são os estudantes que se deslocam de um ambiente para outro, a cada duas horas, os professores permanecem com a sala organizada, conforme as necessidades e materiais pedagógicos e tecnológicos por área de conhecimento. Para conhecer como os estudantes aprendem neste novo ambiente realizamos diversos questionamentos como: o que significa aprender em Ambientes de Aprendizagem, como eram as aulas nas salas de aulas convencionais e como são as aulas nos Ambientes de Aprendizagem. Adotamos o Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo (DSC) como metodologia de análise, buscando a recursividade nos discursos individuais o que permitiu a construção dos discursos coletivos que denominamos Aprender “ontem” nas salas de aula, Aprender “hoje” nos Ambientes de Aprendizagem e Aprender com o material pedagógico. Os discursos evidenciam mudanças no aprender, em decorrência da transformação das salas de aula convencionais em Ambientes de Aprendizagem. Mostram ainda que os estudantes percebem as aulas mais dinâmicas e que agora tem liberdade para levantar e dialogar com os colegas e/ou para usar o material didático disponível no ambiente. Destacam um maior interesse de ambas as partes evidenciando que a ação docente está mais acolhedora e que acreditam em uma grande mudança na educação. A análise dos discursos nos possibilitou compreender que trabalhos realizados em ambientes coletivos e desafiadores modificam o aprender pela liberdade de ação, de expressão e pelo respeito ao outro como legítimo outro na convivência.
