Fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs) are typically difficult to machine due to their highly heterogeneous and anisotropic nature and the presence of two phases (fiber and matrix) with vastly different strengths and stiffnesses. Typical machining damage mechanisms in FRPs include series of brittle fractures (especially for thermosets) due to shearing and cracking of matrix material, fiber pull-outs, burring, fuzzing, fiber-matrix debonding, etc. With the aim of understanding the influence of the pronounced heterogeneity and anisotropy observed in FRPs, ``Idealized'' Carbon FRP (I-CFRP) plates were prepared using epoxy resin with embedded equispaced tows of carbon fibers. Orthogonal cutting of these I-CFRPs was carried out, and the chip formation characteristics, cutting force signals and strain distributions obtained during machining were analyzed using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique. In addition, the same procedure was repeated on Uni-Directional CFRPs (UD-CFRPs). Chip formation mechanisms in FRPs were found to depend on the depth of cut and fiber orientation with pure epoxy showing a pronounced ``size effect.'' Experimental results indicate that in-situ full field strain measurements from DIC coupled with force measurements using dynamometry provide an adequate measure of anisotropy and heterogeneity during orthogonal cutting.

A steel frame is designed to measure the existing prestressing force in the concrete beams and slabs when embedded inside the concrete members. The steel frame is designed to work on the principles of a vibrating wire strain gauge and in the present study is referred to as a vibrating beam strain gauge (VBSG). The existing strain in the VBSG is evaluated using both frequency data on the stretched member and static strain corresponding to a fixed static load, measured using electrical strain gauges. The evaluated strain in the VBSG corresponds to the existing stain in the concrete surrounding the prestressing strands. The crack reopening load method is used to compute the existing prestressing force in the concrete members and is then compared with the existing prestressing force obtained from the VBSG at that section. Digital image correlation based surface deformation and change in neutral axis monitored by putting electrical strain gauges across the cross section, are used to compute the crack reopening load accurately. The geometry and constituent materials of metastructures can be used to engineer the thermal expansion coefficient. In this thesis, we design, fabricate, and test thin thermally stable metastructures consisting of bi-metallic unit cells and show how the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of these metastructures can be finely and coarsely tuned by varying the CTE of the constituent materials and the unit cell geometry. Planar and three-dimensional finite element method modeling is used to drive the design and inform experiments, and predict the response of these metastructures. We demonstrate computationally the significance of out-of-plane effects in the metastructure response. We develop an experimental setup using digital image correlation and an infrared camera to experimentally measure full displacement and temperature fields during testing and accurately measure the metastructures’ CTE. We experimentally demonstrate high aspect ratio metastructures of Ti/Al and Kovar/Al which exhibit near-zero and negative CTE, respectively. We demonstrate robust fabrication procedures for thermally stable samples with high aspect ratios in thin foil and thin film scales. We investigate the lattice structure and mechanical properties of thin films comprising a near-zero CTE metastructure. The mechanics developed in this work can be used to engineer metastructures of arbitrary CTE and can be extended to three dimensions.

In the field of vibration-based damage detection of concrete structures efficient damage models are needed to better understand changes in the vibration properties of cracked structures. These models should quantitatively replicate the damage mechanisms in concrete and easily be used as damage detection tools. In this paper, the flexural cracking behaviour of plain concrete prisms subject to monotonic and cyclic loading regimes under displacement control is tested experimentally and modelled numerically. Four-point bending tests on simply supported un-notched prisms are conducted, where the cracking process is monitored using a digital image correlation system. A numerical model, with a single crack at midspan, is presented where the cracked zone is modelled using the fictitious crack approach and parts outside that zone are treated in a linear-elastic manner. The model considers crack initiation, growth and closure by adopting cyclic constitutive laws. A multi-variate Newton-Raphson iterative solver is used to solve the non-linear equations to ensure equilibrium and compatibility at the interface of the cracked zone. The numerical results agree well with the experiments for both loading scenarios. The model shows good predictions of the degradation of stiffness with increasing load. It also approximates the crack-mouth-opening-displacement when compared with the experimental data of the digital image correlation system. The model is found to be computationally efficient as it runs full analysis for cyclic loading in less than 2. min, and it can therefore be used within the damage detection process. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

The residual strength of glass fibre reinforced vinyl-ester laminates with multiple holes was investigated through an experimental programme. Different types of structured hole patterns and hole densities were investigated and analysed using digital image correlation strain measuring technique. Three different failure modes could be observed when the hole patterns and the hole densities were a altered. These three failure modes were used as the foundation for a simple yet effective analytical model in order to predict the residual strength of damaged composite specimens. Finally, a number of laminates with randomly distributed holes were tested experimentally. The analytical model can predict the failure mode and failure strength of the experiments with sufficiently good fidelity. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.

This paper is concerned with understanding the behaviour of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) in the injection stretch blow moulding (ISBM) process where it is typically bi-axially stretched to form bottles for the packaging industry. Preforms which have been pre sprayed with a pattern and heated in an oil bath have been stretched and blown in free air using a lab scale ISBM machine whilst being monitored via high speed video. The images have subsequently been analysed using a digital image correlation system (VIC 3D). Results are presented showing the typical deformation modes and strain rates encountered in the ISBM process.

The injection stretch blow moulding process is used to manufacture PET containers used in the soft drinks and carbonated soft drinks industry. The process consists of a test tube like specimen known as a preform which is heated, stretch and blown into a mould to form the container. This research is focused on developing a validated simulation of the process thus enabling manufacturers to design their products in a virtual environment without the need to waste time, material and energy. The simulation has been developed using the commercial FEA package Abaqus and has been validated using state of the art data acquisition system consisting of measurements for preform temperature (inner and outer wall) using a device known as THERMOscan (Figure 1), stretch rod force and velocity, internal pressure and air temperature inside the preform using an instrumented stretch rod and the?exact?timing of when the preform touches the mould wall using contact sensors.? In addition, validation studies have also been performed by blowing a perform without a mould and using high sped imaging technology in cooperation with an advanced digital image correlation system (VIC 3D) to provided new quantitative information on the behaviour of PET during blowing.? The approach has resulted in a realistic simulation in terms of accurate input parameters, preform shape evolution and prediction of final properties.

A major concern in stiffener run-out regions, where the stiffener is terminated due to a cut-out, intersecting rib, or some other structural feature which interrupts the load path, is the relatively weak skin–stiffener interface in the absence of mechanical fasteners. More damage tolerant stiffener run-outs are clearly required and these are investigated in this paper. Using a parametric finite element analysis, the run-out region was optimised for stable debonding crack growth. The modified run-out, as well as a baseline configuration, were manufactured and tested. Damage initiation and propagation was investigated in detail using state-of-the-art monitoring equipment including Acoustic Emission and Digital Image Correlation. As expected, the baseline configuration failed catastrophically. The modified run-out showed improved crack-growth stability, but subsequent delamination failure in the stiffener promptly led to catastrophic failure.

Research has shown that fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) wraps are effective for strengthening concrete columns for increased axial and flexural load and deformation capacity, and this technique is now used around the world. The experimental study presented in this paper is focused on the mechanics of FRP confined concrete, with a particular emphasis on the influence of the unconfined concrete compressive strength on confinement effectiveness and hoop strain efficiency. An experimental programme was undertaken to study the compressive strength and stress-strain behaviour of unconfined and FRP confined concrete cylinders of different concrete strength but otherwise similar mix designs, aggregates, and constituents. This was accomplished by varying only the water-to-cement ratio during concrete mixing operations. Through the use of high-resolution digital image correlation to measure both axial and hoop strains, the observations yield insights into the mechanics of FRP confinement of concretes of similar composition but with varying unconfined concrete compressive strength.

Objective: To compare the agreement of multiplanar and rendering modes in the assessment fetal atrioventricular valves (mitral and tricuspid) areas by three-dimensional (3D) ultrasonography using the software spatio-temporal image correlation (STIC). Methods: We conducted a prospective cross-sectional study with normal pregnant women, with single fetuses, between 18-33 weeks. To measure the areas, we used the plan of four-chamber view. In the case of multiplanar, the plane was rotated on the axis "Z" form the heart to position at 9h. For rendering, the green line (region of interest - ROI) was placed from the atria of the heart perpendicular to the crux. The agreement was assessed by a Bland-Altman (limits of agreement) using the relative difference between the measures: ((rendering mode) - (multiplanar mode)) / (average). Results: 328 fetuses were evaluated. We have not identified the occurrence of systematic error between methods: the average relative difference was 1.62% (-2.07% to 5.32%, confidence interval 95%) in the mitral and 1.77% (- 1.08% to 4.62%) in the tricuspid valve. The limits of agreement between methods were -65.26% to 68.51% for the mitral and -49.91% to 53.45% for the tricuspid. Conclusions: There was no systematic error between modes and thus the observed values for the area of fetal atrioventricular valves can be used for comparisons needs to be corrected. However, relatively large variations may be observed when repeating the measurement area by different modes.

A specific manufacturing process to obtain continuous glass fiber-reinforced RIFE laminates was studied and some of their mechanical properties were evaluated. Young's modulus and maximum strength were measured by three-point bending test and tensile test using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique. Adhesion tests, thermal analysis and microscopy were used to evaluate the fiber-matrix adhesion, which is very dependent on the sintering time. The composite material obtained had a Young's modulus of 14.2 GPa and ultimate strength of 165 MPa, which corresponds to approximately 24 times the modulus and six times the ultimate strength of pure RIFE. These results show that the RIFE composite, manufactured under specific conditions, has great potential to provide structural parts with a performance suitable for application in structural components. Assessing a full set of mechanical properties is a rather complicate task in the case of foams, especially if material models must be calibrated with these results. Many issues, for example anisotropy and heterogeneity, influence the mechanical behavior. This article shows through experimental analyses how the microstructure affects different experimental setups and it also quantifies the degree of anisotropy of a poly(vinyl chloride) foam. Monotonic and cyclic experimental tests were carried out using standard compression specimens and non-standard tensile specimens. Results are complemented and compared with the aid of a digital image correlation technique and scanning electron microscopy analyses. Mechanical properties (e.g., elastic and plastic Poisson's ratios) are evaluated for compression and tensile tests, for two different material directions (normal and in-plane). The material is found to be transversely isotropic. Differences in the results of the mechanical properties can be as high as 100%, or even more depending on the technique used and the loading direction. Also, the experimental analyses show how the material's microstructure behavior, like the evolution of the herein identified yield fronts and a spring back phenomenon, can influence the phenomenological response and the failure mechanisms as well as the hardening curves.
