By using the axisymmetric finite elements static limit analysis formulation, proposed recently by the authors, the stability numbers (gamma H/c(o)) for an unsupported vertical circular excavation in clays, whose cohesion increases with depth, have been determined under undrained condition; gamma = unit weight, H., height of the excavation and c(o) = cohesion along ground surface. The results are obtained for various values of H/b and m; where b = the radius of the excavation and m = a non-dimensional parameter which accounts for the rate of the increase of cohesion with depth. The values of the stability numbers increase continuously both with increases in H/b and m. The results obtained in this study compare well with those available in literature.(C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Most of the Greater Cochin area, which is undergoing rapid industrialisation, consists of extremely soft marine clay calling for expensive deep foundations. This paper presents a study on the physical properties and engeering characteristics of Cochin marine clays. These marine clays are characterised by high Atterberg limits and natural water contents. They are moderately sensitive with liquidity indices ranging over 0.46 to 0.87.The grain size distribution shows almost equal fractions of clay and silt size with sand content varying around 20%. Use of a dispersing agent in carrying out grain size distribution test plays an important role. The fabric of these clays had been identified as flocculant. The pore water has low salinity which results in marginal changes in properties on washing.Consolidation test results showed a preconsolidation pressure of up to about 0.5 kg/cm2 with high compression indices. Compression index vs liquid limit yielded a correlation comparable to that of published data. The undisturbed samples have a much larger coefficient of secondary consolidation as a result of flocculant fabric. These clays have very low undrained shear strength.

Experimental studies (Bishop 1966) show that for saturated normally consolidated clay the cohesion varies linearly with depth. The ultimate bearing capacity in such soil is generally obtained by limit equilibrium and limit analysis methods. Sokolovski's (1960) approach to the method of characteristics is used to find the ultimate bearing capacity of saturated clay whose cohesion is homogeneous and isotropic. In this technical note, the method of characteristics is further developed to determine ultimate bearing capacity of clay whose cohesion varies linearly with depth.

The present study aims to assess whether the smectite-rich Cochin and Mangalore clays, which were deposited in a marine medium and subsequently uplifted, exhibit consistency limits response typical of expanding lattice or nonexpanding (fixed) lattice-type clays on artificially changing the chemical environment. The chemical and engineering behaviors of Cochin and Mangalore marine clays are also compared with those of the smectite-rich Ariake Bay marine clay from Japan. Although Cochin, Mangalore, and Ariake clays contain comparable amounts of smectite (32-45%), Ariake clay exhibits lower consistency limits and much higher ranges of liquidity indices than the Indian marine clays. The lower consistency limits of the Ariake clay are attributed to the absence of well-developed, long-range, interparticle forces associated with the clay. Also, Ariake clay exhibits a significantly large (48-714 times) decrease in undrained strength on remolding in comparison to Cochin and Mangalore clays (sensitivity ranges between 1 and 4). A preponderance of long-range, interparticle forces reflected in the high consistency limits of Cochin and Mangalore clays (wL range from 75 to 180%) combined with low natural water contents yield low liquidity indices (typically <1) and high, remolded, undrained strengths and are considered to be responsible for the low sensitivity of the Indian marine clays.

Soil properties and their behavior, apart from stress history, are influenced markedly by physicochemical characteristics of the constituent clay and nonclay minerals and their relative proportions. Atterberg limits and Skempton’s colloidal activity, which are simple quantitative parameters, reflect the composite effects of the soil constituents and their interactions with pore fluid. Micromechanistic interpretations of these parameters have been provided in this paper. It has been shown that, in general, the liquid limit of fine-grained soils reflects the physicochemical potential and that each of the factors of Skempton’s colloidal activity are interdependent. It has been illustrated that property correlations with colloidal activity, as well as with Atterberg limits, result in involved interrelationships due to the interdependence of the parameters.

The permeability index Ck, similar to the compression index, is the slope of the void ratio – coefficient of permeability relationship. Literature shows that, in general, for sensitive clays it can be related to initial void ratio by Ck = 0.5e0. The possibility of obtaining such a relationship for Cochin marine clays in terms of liquid limit void ratio is indicated in this paper. Analysis of permeability behaviour of Cochin marine clays and the test results available in published literature using generalized state parameter approach show that, in principle, these forms of equations for the permeability index are tenable, even though they were obtained based on experimental observation alone.

Soils showing changes in plasticity characteristics upon driving form an important group in tropical soils. These changes are attributed to the grouping of particles into aggregates either due to mineralogy or presence of cementing agents and/or pore fluid characteristics. These changes are found to be permanent. In this paper, the effect of these changes leading to changes in index properties is discussed. The coefficient of permeability has been found to be comparable at liquid limit water content for different soils of varying liquid limit values. Permeability is an indirect reflection of microstructure and indicates the flow rate, which depends upon pore geometry. Other mechanical properties like compressibility and shear strength also depend upon pore geometry. These microstructural aspects of liquid limit as a reference state for the analysis of engineering behavior of tropical soils are examined in detail.

The main objective of this investigation was to understand the strength development of clays below fusion or vitrification temperatures of 900°C. The other objective was to establish threshold temperatures to produce a satisfactory construction material from clayey sediments from the Western Beaufort Sea for shore protection of artificial islands with minimum expense of thermal energy. Studies were, therefore, conducted using kaolinite, bentonite, and a clayey sediment from the Beaufort Sea. Unconfined-compressive-strength tests were conducted on clay samples heat treated from 110 to 700°C. Furthermore, to understand the factors responsible for strength-development-thermogravimetric studies and pore-size analysis, using mercury porosimetry, were also conducted. A gradual increase in strength was obtained with an increase in firing temperature. However, substantial and permanent increase in strength occurred only after dehydroxylation of all the clays studied; Clay samples heated to temperatures above dehydroxylation became resistant to disintegration upon immersion in water. Results indicate that the clayey sediments from Western Beaufort Sea have to be heat treated to about 600°C to produce granular material for use as a fill or shore-protection material for artificial islands.

Analysis of experimental data of soils in both the normally consolidated and overconsolidated states reveal that the proposed relationships are tenable. Preconsolidation stress level influences the level of permeability.
