While negation has been a very active área of research in logic programming, comparatively few papers have been devoted to implementation issues. Furthermore, the negation-related capabilities of current Prolog systems are limited. We recently presented a novel method for incorporating negation in a Prolog compiler which takes a number of existing methods (some modified and improved by us) and uses them in a combined fashion. The method makes use of information provided by a global analysis of the source code. Our previous work focused on the systematic description of the techniques and the reasoning about correctness and completeness of the method, but provided no experimental evidence to evalúate the proposal. In this paper, we report on an implementation, using the Ciao Prolog system preprocessor, and provide experimental data which indicates that the method is not only feasible but also quite promising from the efficiency point of view. In addition, the tests have provided new insight as to how to improve the proposal further. Abstract interpretation techniques are shown to offer important improvements in this application.

Nitrogen functionalization of a highly microporous activated carbon (BET surface area higher than 3000 m2/g) has been achieved using the following sequence of treatments: (i) chemical oxidation using concentrated nitric acid, (ii) amidation by acyl chloride substitution with NH4NO3 and (iii) amination by Hoffman rearrangement. This reaction pathway yielded amide and amine functional groups, and a total nitrogen content higher than 3 at.%. It is achieved producing only a small decrease (20%) of the starting microporosity, being most of it related to the initial wet oxidation of the activated carbon. Remarkably, nitrogen aromatic rings were also formed as a consequence of secondary cyclation reactions. The controlled step-by-step modification of the surface chemistry allowed to assess the influence of individual nitrogen surface groups in the electrochemical performance in 1 M H2SO4 of the carbon materials. The largest gravimetric capacitance was registered for the pristine activated carbon due to its largest apparent surface area. The nitrogen-containing activated carbons showed the highest surface capacitances. Interestingly, the amidated activated carbon showed the superior capacitance retention due to the presence of functional groups (such as lactams, imides and pyrroles) that enhance electrical conductivity through their electron-donating properties, showing a capacitance of 83 F/g at 50 A/g.

In this study, the suitability of two repetitive-element-based PCR (rep-PCR) assays, enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC)-PCR and BOX-PCR, to rapidly characterize Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains isolated from patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) was examined. ERIC-PCR utilizes paired sequence-specific primers and BOX-PCR a single primer that target highly conserved repetitive elements in the P. aeruginosa genome. Using these rep-PCR assays, 163 P. aeruginosa isolates cultured from sputa collected from 50 patients attending an adult CF clinic and 50 children attending a paediatric CF clinic were typed. The results of the rep-PCR assays were compared to the results of PFGE. All three assays revealed the presence of six major clonal groups shared by multiple patients attending either of the CF clinics, with the dominant clonal group infecting 38% of all patients. This dominant clonal group was not related to the dominant clonal group detected in Sydney or Melbourne (pulsotype 1), nor was it related to the dominant groups detected in the UK. In all, PFGE and rep-PCR identified 58 distinct clonal groups, with only three of these shared between the two clinics. The results of this study showed that both ERIC-PCR and BOX-PCR are rapid, highly discriminatory and reproducible assays that proved to be powerful surveillance screening tools for the typing of clinical P. aeruginosa isolates recovered from patients with CF.

Statement of the problem. It seeks to examine whether structural adjustment in Jamaica produced the desired developmental effects for labor--both organized and non-unionized--and if there is any significant difference in the Dominican Republic, which did not undergo that economic transformation. The research hypothesis is; "Structural Adjustment leads to Marginalization of labor."^ Methodology used. The methodology is mostly a straight cross-sectional analysis using data sets and publications from the UN, ILO, World Bank and IDB, as well as local statistical sources. The dissertation is primarily an historical to contemporary analysis of the Jamaican experience under structural adjustment, as it related to labor. To a greater extent it involves a straight cross-national comparison on the historical experiences of each country and a discussion of the relative similarities and differences between them, and the impact these features had on labor.^ Summary of findings. In the end, the question is asked as to whether internal factors are important in the relative success or failure of development strategies. From the data there is some indication that under structural adjustment there has been limited economic benefits for labor in Jamaica while labor standards have not improved. In the Dominican Republic the economic performance has been similar but the labor standards have improved significantly. This thus leads to the conclusion that structural adjustment may have been a factor in the resistance to labor's empowerment.^ Nevertheless, the study also shows that there may have been a causal role which local power relations had. The suggestion from the study is that in analyzing the phenomenon, attention must be paid to internal as well as external dynamics and variables. ^

In response to the recent wide-scale applications of lnformation Technology (I/T) in the hospitality industry, this study analyzed articles in leading hospitality research journals, including the International Journal of Hospitality Management, Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly, and the Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research published in the period 1985 to 2004. A total of 1,896 full-length papers were published in these journals during the study period. Excluding book reviews, research notes, and comments from editors and readers, 130 full-length IT-related papers were identified. These papers were then grouped into six defined categories of IT. The findings revealed that during the entire study period, the largest number of publications were in general business applications, whereas the highest growth rate from the first decade to the second decade were in articles on networking

This thesis examines the impact on child and adolescent psychotherapists within CAMHS of the introduction of routine outcome measures (ROMs) associated with the Children and Young People’s Improving access to Psychological Therapies programme (CYP-IAPT). All CAMHS therapists working within a particular NHS mental health Trust1 were required to trial CYP-IAPT ROMs as part of their everyday clinical practice from October 2013-September 2014. During this period considerable freedom was allowed as to which of the measures each therapist used and at what frequency. In order to assess the impact of CYP-IAPT ROMs on child psychotherapy, I conducted semi-structured interviews with eight psychotherapists within a particular CAMHS partnership within one NHS Trust. Each statement was coded and grouped according to whether it related to initial (generic) assessment, goal setting / monitoring, monitoring on-going progress, therapeutic alliance, or to issues concerning how data might be used or interpreted by managers and commissioners. Analysis of interviews revealed greatest concern about session-by session ROMs, as these are felt to impact most significantly on psychotherapy; therapists felt that session-by-session ROMs do not take account of negative transference relationships, they are overly repetitive and used to reward / punish the therapist. Measures used at assessment and review were viewed as most compatible with psychotherapy, although often experienced as excessively time consuming. The Goal Based Outcome Measure was generally experienced as compatible with psychotherapy so long as goals are formed collaboratively between therapist and young person. There was considerable anxiety about how data may be (mis)used and (mis)interpreted by managers and commissioners, for example to end treatment prematurely, trigger change of therapist in the face of negative ROMs data, or to damage psychotherapy. Use of ROMs for short term and generic work was experienced as less intrusive and contentious.

In this paper, we present norms concerning the perceived association that two sets of stimuli (photos of people and photos of objects) establish with the concept of expertise. Participants were presented with a set of words associated with the expertise dimension and subsequently asked to judge each stimulus on how much it related with the learned (expertise) dimension on a 7-point scale (1 – Not at all related; 7 – Very related). The interpretation of means’ confidence intervals allowed us to distinguish between images highly related with the expertise dimension and images highly unrelated with this dimension. Summarized results are presented and photos made available to support future research requiring stimuli associated with the expertise dimension.

Previous work has identified several short-comings in the ability of four spring wheat and one barley model to simulate crop processes and resource utilization. This can have important implications when such models are used within systems models where final soil water and nitrogen conditions of one crop define the starting conditions of the following crop. In an attempt to overcome these limitations and to reconcile a range of modelling approaches, existing model components that worked demonstrably well were combined with new components for aspects where existing capabilities were inadequate. This resulted in the Integrated Wheat Model (I_WHEAT), which was developed as a module of the cropping systems model APSIM. To increase predictive capability of the model, process detail was reduced, where possible, by replacing groups of processes with conservative, biologically meaningful parameters. I_WHEAT does not contain a soil water or soil nitrogen balance. These are present as other modules of APSIM. In I_WHEAT, yield is simulated using a linear increase in harvest index whereby nitrogen or water limitations can lead to early termination of grainfilling and hence cessation of harvest index increase. Dry matter increase is calculated either from the amount of intercepted radiation and radiation conversion efficiency or from the amount of water transpired and transpiration efficiency, depending on the most limiting resource. Leaf area and tiller formation are calculated from thermal time and a cultivar specific phyllochron interval. Nitrogen limitation first reduces leaf area and then affects radiation conversion efficiency as it becomes more severe. Water or nitrogen limitations result in reduced leaf expansion, accelerated leaf senescence or tiller death. This reduces the radiation load on the crop canopy (i.e. demand for water) and can make nitrogen available for translocation to other organs. Sensitive feedbacks between light interception and dry matter accumulation are avoided by having environmental effects acting directly on leaf area development, rather than via biomass production. This makes the model more stable across environments without losing the interactions between the different external influences. When comparing model output with models tested previously using data from a wide range of agro-climatic conditions, yield and biomass predictions were equal to the best of those models, but improvements could be demonstrated for simulating leaf area dynamics in response to water and nitrogen supply, kernel nitrogen content, and total water and nitrogen use. I_WHEAT does not require calibration for any of the environments tested. Further model improvement should concentrate on improving phenology simulations, a more thorough derivation of coefficients to describe leaf area development and a better quantification of some processes related to nitrogen dynamics. AbstractThe Chlamydiales order is an important bacterial phylum that comprises some of the most successful human pathogens such as Chlamydia trachomatis, the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide. Since some years, several new bacteria related to Chlamydia have been discovered in clinical or environmental samples and might represent emerging pathogens. The genome sequencing of classical Chlamydia has brought invaluable information on these obligate intracellular bacteria otherwise difficult to study due to the lack of tools to perform basic genetic manipulation. The recent emergence of high-throughput sequencing technologies yielding millions of reads in a short time lowered the costs of genome sequencing and thus represented a unique opportunity to study Chlamydia-re\ated bacteria. Based on the sequencing and the analysis of Chlamydiales genomes, this thesis provides significant insights into the genetic determinants of the intracellular lifestyle, the pathogenicity, the metabolism and the evolution of Chlamydia-related bacteria. A first approach showed the efficacy of rapid sequencing coupled to proteomics to identify immunogenic proteins. This method, particularly useful for an emerging pathogen such as Parachlamydia acanthamoebae, enabled us to discover good candidates for the development of diagnostic tools that would permit to evaluate at larger scale the role of this bacterium in disease. Second, the complete genome of Waddlia chondrophila, a potential agent of miscarriage, encodes numerous virulence factors to manipulate its host cell and resist to environmental stresses. The reconstruction of metabolic pathways showed that the bacterium possesses extensive capabilities compared to related organisms. However, it is still incapable of synthesizing some essential components and thus has to import them from its host. Third, the genome comparison of Protochlamydia naegleriophila to its closest known relative Protochlamydia amoebophila revealed a particular evolutionary dynamic with the occurrence of an unexpected genome rearrangement. Fourth, a phylogenetic analysis of P. acanthamoebae and Legionella drancourtii identified several genes probably exchanged by horizontal gene transfer with other intracellular bacteria that might occur within their amoebal host. These genes often encode mechanisms for resistance to metal or toxic compounds. As a whole, the analysis of the different genomes enabled us to highlight a large diversity in size, GC percentage, repeat content as well as plasmid organization. The abundant genomic data obtained during this thesis have a wide impact since they provide the necessary bases for detailed investigations on countless aspects of the biology and the evolution of Chlamydia-related bacteria, whether in wet lab or by bioinformatical analyses.RésuméL'ordre des Chlamydiales est un important phylum bactérien qui comprend de nombreuses espèces pathogènes pour l'homme et les animaux, dont Chlamydia trachomatis, responsable du trachome, la cause majeure de cécité d'origine infectieuse à travers le monde. Durant ces dernières décennies, de nombreuses bactéries apparentées aux Chlamydia ont été découvertes dans des échantillons environnementaux ou cliniques mais leur éventuel rôle pathogène dans le développement de maladies reste peu connu. Ces bactéries sont des intracellulaires obligatoires car elles ont besoin d'une cellule hôte pour se multiplier, ce qui rend leur étude particulièrement difficile. Le développement de nouvelles technologies permettant de séquencer le génome d'un organisme rapidement et à moindre coût ainsi que l'essor des méthodes d'analyse s'y rapportant représentent une opportunité exceptionnelle d'étudier ces organismes. Dans ce contexte, cette thèse démontre l'utilité de la génomique pour développer de nouveaux outils diagnostiques ainsi que pour étudier le métabolisme de ces bactéries, leurs facteurs de virulence et leur évolution.Ainsi, une première approche a illustré l'utilité d'un séquençage rapide pour obtenir les informations nécessaires à l'identification de protéines qui sont reconnues par des anticorps humains ou animaux. Cette méthode, particulièrement utile pour un pathogène émergent tel que Parachlamydia acanthamoebae, a permis de découvrir de bons candidats pour le développement d'un outil diagnostique qui permettrait d'évaluer à plus large échelle le rôle de cette bactérie notamment dans la pneumonie. L'analyse du contenu génique de Waddlia chondrophila, un autre germe qui pourrait être impliqué dans les avortements et tes fausses-couches, a en outre mis en évidence la présence de nombreux facteurs connus qui lui permettent de manipuler son hôte. Cette bactérie possède de plus grandes capacités métaboliques que les autres Chlamydia, mais elle est incapable de synthétiser certains composants et doit donc les importer de son hôte pour subvenir à ses besoins. La comparaison du génome de Protochlamydia naegleriophila à son plus proche parent, Protochlamydia amoebophila, a dévoilé une évolution dynamique particulière avec l'occurrence d'un réarrangement majeur inattendu après la séparation de ces deux espèces. En outre, ces études ont montré l'occurrence de plusieurs transferts de gène avec d'autres organismes plus éloignés, notamment d'autres intracellulaires d'amibes, souvent pour l'acquisition de mécanismes de résistances à des composés toxiques. Les données génomiques acquises durant ce travail posent les fondements nécessaires a de nombreuses analyses qui permettront progressivement de mieux comprendre de nombreux aspects de ces bactéries fascinantes.
