Role of swift heavy ion irradiation on the modification of transport and structural properties of high temperature superconductors is studied. Good quality YBCO thin films prepared by high pressure oxygen sputtering and laser ablation were used in this investigation. Resistivity and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were mainly used to probe superconducting and microstructural modifications resulted from the irradiation of high energy and heavy ions like 100 MeV oxygen and 200 MeV silver. Radiation induced sputtering or erosion is likely to be a major disastrous component of such high energy irradiation that could be powerful in masking phase coherence effects, atleast in grain boundaries. The extent of damage/nature of defects other than columnar defects produced by swift heavy ions is discussed in the light of AFM measurements. The effect of high energy oxygen ion irradiation is anomalous. A clear annealing effect at higher doses is seen. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, the authors investigate the electromagnetic properties of stacks of high temperature superconductor (HTS) coated conductors with a particular focus on calculating the total transport AC loss. The cross-section of superconducting cables and coils is often modeled as a two-dimensional stack of coated conductors, and these stacks can be used to estimate the AC loss of a practical device. This paper uses a symmetric two dimensional (2D) finite element model based on the H formulation, and a detailed investigation into the effects of a magnetic substrate on the transport AC loss of a stack is presented. The number of coated conductors in each stack is varied from 1 to 150, and three types of substrate are compared: non-magnetic weakly magnetic and strongly magnetic. The non-magnetic substrate model is comparable with results from existing models for the limiting cases of a single tape (Norris) and an infinite stack (Clem). The presence of a magnetic substrate increases the total AC loss of the stack, due to an increased localized magnetic flux density, and the stronger the magnetic material, the further the flux penetrates into the stack overall. The AC loss is calculated for certain tapes within the stack, and the differences and similarities between the losses throughout the stack are explained using the magnetic flux penetration and current density distributions in those tapes. The ferromagnetic loss of the substrate itself is found to be negligible in most cases, except for small magnitudes of current. Applying these findings to practical applications, where AC transport current is involved, superconducting coils should be wound where possible using coated conductors with a non-magnetic substrate to reduce the total AC loss in the coil. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Superconductors are known for the ability to trap magnetic field. A thermally actuated magnetization (TAM) flux pump is a system that utilizes the thermal material to generate multiple small magnetic pulses resulting in a high magnetization accumulated in the superconductor. Ferrites are a good thermal material candidate for the future TAM flux pumps because the relative permeability of ferrite changes significantly with temperature, particularly around the Curie temperature. Several soft ferrites have been specially synthesized to reduce the cost and improve the efficiency of the TAM flux pump. Various ferrite compositions have been tested under a temperature variation ranging from 77K to 300K. The experimental results of the synthesized soft ferrites-Cu 0.3 Zn 0.7Ti 0.04Fe 1.96O 4, including the Curie temperature, magnetic relative permeability and the volume magnetization (emu/cm3), are presented in this paper. The results are compared with original thermal material, gadolinium, used in the TAM flux pump system.-Cu 0.3 Zn 0.7Ti 0.04 Fe 1.96O 4 holds superior characteristics and is believed to be a suitable material for next generation TAM flux pump. © 2011 IEEE.

We have studied numerically and experimentally the magnetic flux penetration in high-Tc superconducting tube subjected to a uniform magnetic field parallel to its long axis. This study is carried in view of designing low-frequency magnetic shields by exploiting the diamagnetic properties of high-Tc superconducting ceramics. We have measured the field attenuation for applied magnetic fields in the frequency range 5 mHz-0.1 Hz by Hall probe measurements and at audio frequencies using a sensing coil. A simple 1D analysis using the Kim critical state model was found to be able to reproduce the experimental data satisfactorily. We have also determined the phase shift between the internal and the applied field both experimentally and numerically. Finally, we have studied the sweep rate dependence of the magnetic shielding properties, using data recorded either at several constant sweep rates dB /dt or at several AC fields of various amplitudes and frequencies. Both methods agree with each other and lead to a n-value of the E ∼ Jn law equal to ∼40 at 77 K. © 2009 IEEE.

A technique for analysis of total oxygen contents in high-T(c) superconducting films is demonstrated. It uses elastic backscattering (EBS) of 1.5-2.5 MeV protons. By comparing the H EBS spectra from substrate materials, the absolute oxygen content in the films can be easily calculated. It is estimated that the analysis can be accurate to better than 5% for YBCO films with thicknesses from several hundred angstroms to several microns. Comparisons with RBS are given and advantages of this technique are shown.

The utility of the high-temperature superconductor, YBa2Cu3O7-x as the cathode material for an all-solid-state lithium cell has been examined. The capacity of YBa2Cu3O7-x is 223 mA h g-1 and the discharge efficiency is > 92%. Measurements of a.c. impedance show that the charge-transfer resistance at the interface of the electrolyte/cathode is very low and increases with the depth-of-discharge of the battery. Studies using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveal that the cathode becomes doped with Li+ ions as the cell discharges.

In the Bi-based high-T(c) superconductors, three superconducting transition points were observed above the liquid-N2 temperature range. Allotropes of the 2212 phase were found. These allotropes were metastable and can interchange with the 2212 phase, and their T(c)'s vary from approximately 85 to approximately 100 K.

The net charges at atoms in the high-temperature superconductor TlBa2Can-1CunO2n+3 (n = 1 to 3) are calculated by means of the tight-binding approximation based on the EHMO method. The results indicate that the charge distribution in this kind of compounds possesses a specially layered arrangement. An insulating Ba-Ba layer is inserted between the Cu-O layer and the Tl-O layer. There may exist a weak coupling between the Cu-O layer and the Tl-O layer through the interaction of the same O(2) atom with both the Cu atom and the Tl atom. The existence of the Ca in the compounds can cause the valence fluctuation at the Cu atom. The calculated electric field gradients at atoms implies that the conducting electron or hole may move in the Cu-O layer, which is closest to the Tl-O layer, along the a-b plane.
