He aquí la segunda parte de las entregas sobre exploraciones radiológicas con contraste de la serie de Nursing sobre las pruebas complementarias. Los medios de contraste radiológicos figuran entre los elementos más comúnmente utilizados como apoyo para obtener una información diagnóstica fidedigna. En la primera entrega se expusieron los aspectos comunes de los medios de contraste utilizados en radiología y las características del contraste de bario, así como las técnicas en las que se utiliza. En esta entrega se muestran las características del contraste yodado y su uso como base de obtención de la imagen diagnóstica junto con la radiación ionizante. El contraste yodado es una sustancia que al ser atravesada por la radiación ionizante, al igual que ocurría con el bario, se traduce en una densidad metálica que se diferencia claramente del resto de densidades y por tanto de estructuras, convirtiéndolo en una de las herramientas más utilizadas en radiología. Es cierto que algunas de estas exploraciones tienden a perder relevancia frente a otras como la tomografía computarizada (TC) y la resonancia magnética (RM), pero su valor desde un punto de vista de eficacia diagnóstica todavía es relevante en los servicios de radiología. En las técnicas con contraste yodado es necesario conocer las preparaciones, la dinámica de las exploraciones y los cuidados posteriores, así como los efectos secundarios y los signos y síntomas de las reacciones adversas.

alpha-Tocopherol enhances tumour growth inhibition by cis-dichlorodiammine platinum (II)

Present studies indicate that alpha-tocopherol enhances the efficacy of cisplatin as demonstrated by inoculation of Dalton's lymphoma cells incubated with either cisplatin (5 or 10 µg/ml) alone or cisplatin + alpha-tocopherol (25 or 50 µg/ml) into C3H/He mice. Tumour cells (3 x 10(6) cells/mouse) incubated with cisplatin grow slowly in syngeneic mice as indicated by the late appearance of tumour. However, mice failed to develop tumour when inoculated with tumour cells incubated with cisplatin + alpha-tocopherol. When the animals were challenged with tumour cells (3 x 10(6) cells/mouse) on the 15th day after the initial inoculation, 30-50% survived more than 60 days, with 10% tumour-free survivors being observed in some groups. Antitumour activity was higher in mice receiving lymphoma cells (3 x 10(6) cells/mouse) preincubated with cisplatin + alpha-tocopherol compared to cisplatin alone. Tumour-bearing mice receiving cisplatin in combination with different concentrations of alpha-tocopherol exhibited significantly higher (P<0.001) intratumour platinum content (123-306%) but without any change in the kidney platinum content as compared to those receiving cisplatin (5 or 10 µg/ml) alone. Enhancement of cisplatin-induced tumour growth inhibition is probably due to the modulation of tumour cell membrane permeability by alpha-tocopherol. alpha-Tocopherol might increase the influx of cisplatin into tumour cells, causing the DNA repair machinery to be less efficient due to increased efficiency of adduct formation in the DNA molecule. This effect of alpha-tocopherol can render cisplatin more effective as an antitumour agent.

Effect of hepatocyte growth factor and angiotensin II on rat cardiomyocyte hypertrophy

Angiotensin II (Ang II) plays an important role in cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. The combined effect of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and Ang II on cardiomyocytes is unknown. The present study was designed to determine the effect of HGF on cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and to explore the combined effect of HGF and Ang II on cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. Primary cardiomyocytes were isolated from neonatal rat hearts and cultured in vitro. Cells were treated with Ang II (1 µM) alone, HGF (10 ng/mL) alone, and Ang II (1 µM) plus HGF (10 ng/mL) for 24, 48, and 72 h. The amount of [³H]-leucine incorporation was then measured to evaluate protein synthesis. The mRNA levels of β-myosin heavy chain and atrial natriuretic factor were determined by real-time PCR to evaluate the presence of fetal phenotypes of gene expression. The cell size of cardiomyocytes was also studied. Ang II (1 µM) increased cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. Similar to Ang II, treatment with 1 µM HGF promoted cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. Moreover, the combination of 1 µM Ang II and 10 ng/mL HGF clearly induced a combined pro-hypertrophy effect on cardiomyocytes. The present study demonstrates for the first time a novel, combined effect of HGF and Ang II in promoting cardiomyocyte hypertrophy.

Jean-Paul II et la communication sociale de l'Église catholique

Jean-Paul II a été favorable à une bonne utilisation des moyens de communication sociale pour renforcer les activités missionnaires de l'Église catholique dans un monde davantage sécularisé. Plusieurs autres auteurs qui seront mentionnés dans ce mémoire célèbrent ce rapport positif que le pape entretient avec les médias et les professionnels des médias. Toutefois une relecture des textes de Jean-Paul II permet de conclure que ce rapport aux médias prend en compte les problèmes associés aux effets négatifs des médias. Certes, son usage et sa compréhension des médias se trouvaient motivés largement par les avantages certains qu'ils offrent, dont il se servira avec habileté, mais aussi par les effets débilitants sur l’annonce de l'Évangile dans le monde actuel qu'ils provoquent. Ambivalent, ce pape réussira tout de même à tirer son épingle du jeu et tentera par tous les moyens de convaincre les Catholiques de l'importance des médias, toutes les formes de médias. Dans le but d'éclaircir ce rapport ambivalent, le mémoire formule deux questions sur lesquelles les analyses sont centrées : 1. Quels sont les enjeux problématiques des médias sous-entendus dans les réflexions de Jean-Paul II en matière de communication sociale ? 2. Quelles approches a-t-il utilisées en réponse à ces enjeux ? En définitive, ces questions permettent, du moins nous semble-t-il, de saisir des aspects fondamentaux concernant les apports de Jean-Paul II en communication sociale.

Jorge Velasco Mackenzie: tatuaje de náufragos es la única novela en la que me he divertido escribiendo (De la Escena Contemporánea)

El autor entrevista al narrador guayaquileño Jorge Velasco Mackenzie, quien responde sobre su oficio de escritor. Velasco sostiene que sufre con sus personajes y agoniza cuando estos mueren. Mira a Tatuaje de náufragos como un homenaje a un bar generacional, a una época y una forma de ser artista que ya no existen más, sería la autopsia de una generación y de la ciudad. Velasco sostiene que el poeta Fernando Nieto no solo fue un animador de la bohemia del Montreal, el fundador de Sicoseo, sino un hombre que sabía mucho, y un hombre generoso en lo personal, admira la posición de Nieto frente al mundo, frente a la literatura. En los escritos de Velasco siempre está Guayaquil, porque es el lugar donde nació y es el único donde puede vivir. Podría decirse que escribir sobre Guayaquil es su proyecto estético. Considera al Montreal como un lugar vivo, abierto, con sus personajes y su rocola antigua, lo evocó así toda su vida y a lo largo del libro intentó devolverle ese esplendor.

Rerum cognoscere causas: part II - opportunities generated by the agency/structure debate and suggestions for clarifying the social theoretic position of system dynamics

This is the second half of a two-part paper dealing with the social theoretic assumptions underlying system dynamics. In the first half it was concluded that analysing system dynamics using traditional, paradigm-based social theories is highly problematic. An innovative and potentially fruitful resolution is now proposed to these problems. In the first section it is argued that in order to find an appropriate social theoretic home for system dynamics it is necessary to look to a key exchange in contemporary social science: the agency/structure debate. This debate aims to move beyond both the theories based only on the actions of individual human agents, and those theories that emphasise only structural influences. Emerging from this debate are various theories that instead aim to unite the human agent view of the social realm with views that concentrate solely on system structure. It is argued that system dynamics is best viewed as being implicitly grounded in such theories. The main conclusion is therefore that system dynamics can contribute to an important part of social thinking by providing a formal approach for explicating social mechanisms. This conclusion is of general significance for system dynamics. However, the over-arching aim of the two-part paper is to increase the understanding of system dynamics in related disciplines. Four suggestions are therefore offered for how the system dynamics method might be extended further into the social sciences. It is argued that, presented in the right way, the formal yet contingent feedback causality thinking of system dynamics should diffuse widely in the social sciences and make a distinctive and important contribution to them.
