This correspondence considers the problem of optimally controlling the thrust steering angle of an ion-propelled spaceship so as to effect a minimum time coplanar orbit transfer from the mean orbital distance of Earth to mean Martian and Venusian orbital distances. This problem has been modelled as a free terminal time-optimal control problem with unbounded control variable and with state variable equality constraints at the final time. The problem has been solved by the penalty function approach, using the conjugate gradient algorithm. In general, the optimal solution shows a significant departure from earlier work. In particular, the optimal control in the case of Earth-Mars orbit transfer, during the initial phase of the spaceship's flight, is found to be negative, resulting in the motion of the spaceship within the Earth's orbit for a significant fraction of the total optimized orbit transfer time. Such a feature exhibited by the optimal solution has not been reported at all by earlier investigators of this problem.

The life cycle and genetic diversity of the red alga Furcellaria lumbricalis (Hudson) Lamouroux were investigated in 15 populations in northern Europe. The occurrence of different life cycle phases and seasonality of reproduction were studied in four brackish populations in the northern Baltic Sea. Furthermore, a new method, based on genome screening with ISSR markers combined with a restriction-ligation method, was developed to discover microsatellite markers for population genetic analyses. The mitochondrial DNA cox2-3 spacer sequence and four microsatellite markers were used to examine the genetic diversity and differentiation of red algal populations in northern Europe. In addition, clonality and small-scale genetic structure of one Irish and four Baltic Sea populations were studied with microsatellite markers. It was discovered that at the low salinities of the northern Baltic Sea, only tetrasporophytes and males were present in the populations of F. lumbricalis and that winter was the main season for tetrasporangial production. Furthermore, the population occurring at the lowest salinity (3.6 practical salinity units, psu) did not produce spores. The size of the tetraspores was smaller in the Baltic Sea populations than that in the Irish population, and there were more deformed spores in the Baltic Sea populations than in the Irish populations. Studies with microsatellite markers indicated that clonality is a common phenomenon in the Baltic Sea populations of F. lumbricalis, although the proportion of clonal individuals varied among populations. Some genetic divergence occurred within locations both in Ireland and in the northern Baltic Sea. Even though no carpogonia were detected in the field samples during the study, the microsatellite data indicated that sexual reproduction occurs at least occasionally in the northern Baltic Sea. The genetic diversity of F. lumbricalis was highest in Brittany, France. Since no variation was discovered in the mtDNA cox2-3 spacer sequence, which is generally regarded as an informative phylogeographic marker in red algae, it can be assumed that the studied populations probably share the same origin.

A theoretical study on the propagation of plane waves in the presence of a hot mean flow in a uniform pipe is presented. The temperature variation in the pipe is taken to be a linear temperature gradient along the axis. The theoretical studies include the formulation of a wave equation based on continuity, momentum, and state equation, and derivation of a general four-pole matrix, which is shown to yield the well-known transfer matrices for several other simpler cases.
An FETI-preconditioned conjuerate gradient method for large-scale stochastic finite element problems
Resumo:
In the spectral stochastic finite element method for analyzing an uncertain system. the uncertainty is represented by a set of random variables, and a quantity of Interest such as the system response is considered as a function of these random variables Consequently, the underlying Galerkin projection yields a block system of deterministic equations where the blocks are sparse but coupled. The solution of this algebraic system of equations becomes rapidly challenging when the size of the physical system and/or the level of uncertainty is increased This paper addresses this challenge by presenting a preconditioned conjugate gradient method for such block systems where the preconditioning step is based on the dual-primal finite element tearing and interconnecting method equipped with a Krylov subspace reusage technique for accelerating the iterative solution of systems with multiple and repeated right-hand sides. Preliminary performance results on a Linux Cluster suggest that the proposed Solution method is numerically scalable and demonstrate its potential for making the uncertainty quantification Of realistic systems tractable.

The conventional Clauser-chart method for determination of local skin friction in zero or weak pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer flows fails entirely in strong pressure-gradient situations. This failure occurs due to the large departure of the mean velocity profile from the universal logarithmic law upon which the conventional Clauser-chart method is based. It is possible to extend this method, even for strong pressure-gradient situations involving equilibrium or near-equilibrium turbulent boundary layers by making use of the so-called non-universal logarithmic laws. These non-universal log laws depend on the local strength of the pressure gradient and may be regarded as perturbations of the universal log law.The present paper shows that the modified Clauser-chart method, so developed, yields quit satisfactory results in terms of estimation of local skin friction in strongly accelerated or retarded equilibrium and near-equilibrium turbulent boundary layers that are not very close to relaminarization or separation.

Though it has been established that ZnO tetrapods can be synthesized by heating Zn in air, it is advantageous to grow tetrapods with legs of different morphologies with different lengths. Here, we report the large scale synthesis of ZnO tetrapods by heating Zn in air ambient. The parameters that control the diameter, length, and morphology of tetrapods are identified. It is shown that the morphology and dimensions of the tetrapods depend not only on the vaporization temperature but also on the temperature gradient of the furnace. The controlled synthesis procedure and the key parameters that influence the morphology are discussed.

This work addresses the optimum design of a composite box-beam structure subject to strength constraints. Such box-beams are used as the main load carrying members of helicopter rotor blades. A computationally efficient analytical model for box-beam is used. Optimal ply orientation angles are sought which maximize the failure margins with respect to the applied loading. The Tsai-Wu-Hahn failure criterion is used to calculate the reserve factor for each wall and ply and the minimum reserve factor is maximized. Ply angles are used as design variables and various cases of initial starting design and loadings are investigated. Both gradient-based and particle swarm optimization (PSO) methods are used. It is found that the optimization approach leads to the design of a box-beam with greatly improved reserve factors which can be useful for helicopter rotor structures. While the PSO yields globally best designs, the gradient-based method can also be used with appropriate starting designs to obtain useful designs efficiently. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. This paper studies an ultrasonic wave dispersion characteristics of a nanorod. Nonlocal strain gradient models (both second and fourth order) are introduced to analyze the ultrasonic wave behavior in nanorod. Explicit expressions are derived for wave numbers and the wave speeds of the nanorod. The analysis shows that the fourth order strain gradient model gives approximate results over the second order strain gradient model for dynamic analysis. The second order strain gradient model gives a critical wave number at certain wave frequency, where the wave speeds are zero. A relation among the number of waves along the nanorod, the nonlocal scaling parameter (e(0)a), and the length of the nanorod is obtained from the nonlocal second order strain gradient model. The ultrasonic wave characteristics of the nanorod obtained from the nonlocal strain gradient models are compared with the classical continuum model. The dynamic response behavior of nanorods is explained from both the strain gradient models. The effect of e(0)a on the ultrasonic wave behavior of the nanorods is also observed. The calculation of the transitional boundary layer requires estimates of the extent of the transition zone, which in turn depends on the rate at which turbulent spots are formed. This rate has been found to scale with local boundary layer thickness and viscosity, and the resulting nondimensional group (called crumble) is a function of the pressure gradient, among other parameters. Available experimental data are analyzed to show that the crumble increases slowly with increasing favorable pressure gradients, being about four times as large as in constant-pressure flow when the Thwaites pressure gradient parameter at the effective origin of the resulting turbulent boundary layer is 0.1 and when transition is driven by free-stream turbulence.

Extensive measurements of columnar aerosol optical depth (AOD), composite (M-T) and black carbon aerosol mass (M-B) concentrations were made over the tropical Indian and Southern Oceans as a part of the Pilot Expedition to the Southern Ocean during the boreal winter. The AOD, M-T and M-B show large latitudinal gradient towards south up to ITCZ. Beyond ITCZ, up to 56 degrees S, AOD and M-B show very low and steady values. However M-T shows large variations in the Southern Ocean due to the enhanced production of sea salt aerosols associated with high sea surface winds. The short wave aerosol radiative forcing at the surface over north of equator is in the range - 10 to -23 W m(-2), whereas that over the Southern Ocean was in the range -4 to -5 W m(-2). The corresponding atmospheric forcing was in the range of 6-13 W m(-2) and 0.8-1.4 W m(-2). This large north south change in the aerosol radiative forcing has important implications to the meridional circulation and hence to climate.

The EMF of a solid-state cell, incorporating a composite solid-electrolyte with gradual variation in composition, and dissimilar gas electrodes, has been studied as a function of temperature and partial pressures at the electrodes. The cell with the configuration: Pt, CO2' + O2' parallel-to Na2CO3\Na(SO4)x(CO3)1-x\Na2SO4 parallel-to SO3'' + SO2'' + O2'', Pt x=0 x=1 was investigated in the temperature range 973 to 1079 K. The solid-electrolyte surface exposed to SO3 + SO2 + O2 gas mixture was doped-Na2SO4, whereas the CO2 + O2 gas mixture was in contact with pure Na2CO3. The composition of the solid solution between the carbonate and sulfate, with hexagonal structure, was varied gradually between the boundary values. It has been found that the EMF of the cell is close to that calculated from thermodynamic data, assuming unit transport number for Na+ ions. The gradient in the concentration of sulfate and carbonate ions in the electrolyte does not give rise to a significant diffusion potential.

The thermodynamic properties of K2CO3 -KSO, solid solutions with hexagonal structure have been measured using a solid-state cell, incorporating a composite solid electrolyte with step-changes in composition. The cell with the configuration Pt, CO2' + O2' || K2CO3 | K2(CO3)x(SO4)1-x || CO2'' + O2'' + Pt X =1 X=X was investigated in the temperature range of 925 to 1165 K. The composite gradient solid electrolyte consisted of pure K2CO3 at one extremity and the solid solution under study at the other. The Nernstian response of the cell to changes in partial pressures of CO2 and O2 at the electrodes and temperature was demonstrated. The activity of K2CO3 in the solid solution was measured by three techniques. All three methods gave identical results, indicating unit transport number for K+ ions and negligible diffusion potential due to concentration gradients of carbonate and sulfate ions. The activity of K2CO3 exhibits positive deviation from Raoult's law. The excess Gibbs energy of mixing of the solid solution can be represented using a subregular solution model DELTAG(E) = X(1 - X)[5030X + 4715(1 - X)] J mol-1 By combining this information with the phase diagram, mixing properties of the liquid phase were obtained.
